    Have to mention that Ashikaga Takauji and Tadayoshi did not actively want to fight Go-daigo directly, in fact, the two wanted continued to negotiate with Yoshino court even after Go-daigo died in 1339 to make peace with the Southern Court with Takauji temporarily taking the side of the Southern Court which was the Shohei unification, a short lived termination of the Ashikaga Bakufu with Takauji no longer Seii-taishogun in 1352, even if, he was shogun from 1338-58 when looking at the period officially. That was in all likelihood a political maneuver to end the war with his brother, my favorite part of the period being the Kanno Disturbance.
    Now, going back to the Nakasendai war in 1335, Tokiyuki was a 10 year old child so the intent behind the war was use to him as a banner to gather the remaining Hojo forces in the Kanto to take it back mainly pushed by the Suwa clan , only reason why Takauji even fought back was because Yoshisada was converging on the Kanto along with Akiie from Mutsu, but Takauji wasn't of the same footing as those two until he was approached by Kogon-in and given the imperial decree at the recommendation of Harimas own Akamatsu Enshin, only then did more warrior's actively make their side known since Ashikaga was fighting for the Retired emperor now and the opposition to the Jimyo-in line, making it so that his actions were legitimate and not that of a rebel even if he did technically rebel against Go-daigo, the current Emperor, and his administration. If anything, momentum changed after Takauji had gained significant support in Kyushu with only the Kikuchi showing any real animosity to the Ashikaga since they were Pro-Southren Court but families like Shimazu, Shoni, Otomo, etc... supported him and fought with him once Ashikaga made their way back onto Honshu, took Kyoto, sought to negotiate with Go-daigo, but that didn't go far since he refused the terms to have Go-Murakami be next in line amongst other conditions.

    • @thedragonofechigo7878
      @thedragonofechigo7878 18 днів тому +1

      That's a little incorrect seeing as Ashikaga had plenty of support themselves, not just from their ichimon like Hosokawa or Shiba. The war only lasted that long because whilst they were clans that sided with the Emperor initially, they did change sides as time went on and that weakened the Southern Court, nevermind that the Northern Court still had instability directly caused by the Ashikaga Bakufu.
      Truth is, the Ashikaga Bakufu was stronger than the Yoshino court forces/clans that aligned themselves with Go-daigo/Go-Murakami.

    The Boshin War and Satsuma Rebellion were very confusing and difficult to understand for me. I first tried to look at it as ideological conflicts, such as isolationism vs opening Japan up to the world, or traditionalism vs progressivism, but if you do that, it becomes kind of fishy which side wants what. In the end, it was really more a naked power struggle than anything else.

    • @shanmianhiyueshongdaojukei9732
      @shanmianhiyueshongdaojukei9732 17 днів тому

      So basically, Boshin war is all about the end of the ruling Shogunate and the restoration of the Imperial family to power.
      While the Satsuma rebellion was launched to try to save the old ways from completely wiping out in history.

    • @KroganCharr
      @KroganCharr 17 днів тому +2

      @@shanmianhiyueshongdaojukei9732 Yes, what I failed to do was to assign either party in either conflict with any sort of ideological position. It wasn't that one side clearly favored isolationism and traditionalism, while the other side wanted to open Japan up and modernize. And that is what I initially assumed was the case.
      I concluded that in reality, it really was all about power. The Boshin war was about whether the Emperor or the Shogun was the supreme authority. The Satsuma rebellion was about whether or not the Samurai class would be able to hold onto some of its priviledges. And that's really the gist of it.

      I will explain it clearly. The official name of a shogun is Seii-dai-shogun 征夷大将軍.
      The meaning is the Secretary of Defense, who is the commander-in-chief of the military that protects the country from enemies.
      Later, as they pursued the enemy and worked far from the capital, they were given administrative jurisdiction.
      This is the Shogunate (幕府). At first, the authority was limited to a few regions as a representative of the Imperial Court,
      but later came to be able to manage the politics of Japan as a whole on behalf of the Imperial Court 朝廷.

    • @user-cf1xm9dh7b
      @user-cf1xm9dh7b 4 дні тому +2

      In other words, the legitimacy of a shogun is to protect the country.
      The Boshin War was triggered by the Tokugawa shogunate's unequal treaties with Western empires such as the United States.
      The main purpose of the beginning of the civil war and the establishment of the new Meiji restration was to end this unequal treaty.

    Like many feudal lords around the world, the Shogun has been called by many different names throughout history. Here are some examples:
    ・Kamakura-dono or Muromachi-dono (meaning Lord of Kamakura or Lord of Muromachi)
    Mainly used by the samurai class to refer to the Shogun. It can also be used to refer to the Shogunate itself. It is an familiar name to most samurai who are not familiar with the Kyoto system.
    ・Kubō (meaning "official ruler")
    Originally a title for the nobility. It did not necessarily mean the highest power, and there was a time when there were multiple titles in various regions.
    ・Taiju (meaning big tree)
    Mainly used by the nobility to refer to the Shogun. It is a fairly respectful usage. Another name (Chinese name) for the Seii Taishogun in the Ritsuryo system. It comes from a story from the Later Han period.

    The physical body of the Shogunate might have gone extinct but the spiritual body of it still exists as the rivalry of the Imperial Army and imperial Navy. Even though working under one government the two militaristic forces still opposed one another like the daimyo of old.

    hosokawa won but the shogun's son became the heir, not his brother, bcus the brother switched sides(meaning both claimants are on the same side, then the kid was selected later) and the war really being a conflict b/w 2 clans, and the succession dispute is just an excuse to fight
