I actually love the watercolour style Sugimori used back in the day for the manga and cards. I think it would be a great art style for a whole game to be stylized with.
You had me for the first half, but no people have tried this for games and they age VERY poorly VERY quickly and look absolutely ugly as hell You don't hear people saying let me go play the old version of okami, they go play the HD remake
The fact that BDSP didn’t get this attention to detail and love will always break my heart. Platinum was my favorite game growing up and I’ll never get to see the world my 10 year old self imagined beyond the DS’s capabilities. They deserved so much more it’s not fair.
Honestly my crackpot theory is that PLA is the game GF wanted to make instead, but they were scared of receiving backlash from not having g4 remakes, so they gave ILCA like a year to develop it just to fulfill an obligation. BDSP is pretty unforgivable, but at least that passion went somewhere in the form of Arceus.
It strikes me that any time someone brings up aspects that would make the best Pokémon game, many of those features are something that’s either in HGSS or B2W2
The pokewalker was the original pokemon go. I still have mine I remember going on walks with my mom and more then anything those memories of my mom are what stuck with me. Her agreeing to a walk in the cold are still so meaningful to me.
"I wish for everyone to have the chance to find something that fascinates them at a young age so they can carry that passion into their adult life." Damn, those are some good ass words. Good on you, Mr. Ohmori.
@@goober5367 Why? Because I dared to dislike a game that has a nothing-burger of an story, bland characters, bad level curve and with a post-game that is nothing more than "go to city -> get badge -> rinse and repeat"? Then maybe I am.

I wouldn't completely blame GF for the lack of quality. If anything, blame TPCi mostly for rushing out these games and not letting the developers take time develop these games, Expansion DLC or not.
@@dnmstarsi GF (or at least the leaders at GF) have expressed that they don't like having big teams for things and that if they could still get away with only hiring a dozen people to work on a game, they would. I think it's a combination of TPCi and GF making a perfect storm of lack of quality. They just need to do what the Zelda team did: be open to new ideas, revamp their process, and take more time. I don't need a new Pokemon game every year (or even every other year). I would adore something that had the level of quality that the older titles had.
@@Cometstarlight Like I said, blame MOSTLY on TPCi. Keep in mind that they're the ones with the business schedule and even with the whole "they don't like working with big teams" response, they're not the ones who decided to release the game on a yearly basis as opposed to develop and release the game when it's ready though Gen 8 did give us a core game NOT developed by them and they have been open to new ideas and concepts over time which is something that fans tend to forget or ignore because there's a bunch of other issues they have with Modern Pokemon that they don't notice or ignore the newer stuff. Point is, GF has their faults but it's mostly not their fault and they still do develop with passion and care even if fans don't think that because modern Pokemon doesn't seem to have that passion from years ago. They did take time making Legends Arceus and many Pokemon fans loved that installment and saw it as a step in the right direction.
These came out my freshman year of college. Being around a ton of strangers who shared the same memories of growing up with the GB version, PLUS all of them walking around the PokeWalkers attached to their persons, was an absolute blast. Met many friends thanks to that. This was when Pokemon peaked, and subsequently faded away, for me. Always have a soft spot for this game though!
@@cs5250 You're definitely right, Pokémon GO brought Pokémon back into the public eye in a big way. It may have been the most culturally visible Pokémon has been since the original Poke-fever with Gen I and II. Remember "Pokémon GO to the polls?" But I do think HGSS was the peak of Pokémon in a different way.
"I thought about Lugia all day and dreamed about Lugia all night. At some point I fell in love." Reminds me of that earlier video they did about how the guy who created Lugia was obsessed with it. Why is it always Lugia that _Pokemon_ creators obsess over?
8:45 It payed off well. The subtle ambient sounds behind the remastered OST is part of what made Johto in HG/SS feel so alive. ...I really want to crack open my old copy of Heart Gold now. Maybe even dust off the Pokewalker.

More trivia on Nakagawa Shoko's book! I bought Shoko-tan's book when it was first released around the end of gen 5 and the start of gen 6. I finally sat down and read it a few years later. Inside is a story about how when she was young, her and her grandfather went together to see the first Pokemon movie, and this became the pin that made that movie so important to her today, as it is one of the dearest memories of her and her grandfather. Many years later, Shoko-tan got to sing a cover of the first movie's theme song, "Kaze to Issho ni", for the movie's 3D remake. The music video of that cover is shot from the perspective of a little girl who is going to see the original film with her grandfather. Shoko-tan herself appears at the end of the video, but if you read that story in her book, you'd immediately recognize this as a recreation of her real life memories of her and her grandfather. I cried tears watching that... and she confirmed this later on an episode of the live pokemon variety show she was hosting on at the time.
The one thing I dislike about HGSS is the absence of Kris in favour of Lyra and I'm a little saddened that she was initially forgotten by the devs. Kris meant a lot to me as I could finally play as a girl in Pokemon and her hair was blue like suicune!
100% this!!! It drove me nuts that she wasn't brought back and I always wanted an answer to why she wasn't. The answwe is so frustrating yet cathartic at the same time.
Kris was what got me as a child into Pokemon. I liked video games, but Pokemon didn't let me be a girl so it was a "boy's game" (I know it's stupid, but I was a kid and kid logic is like that). Kris was cool and cute and fun and let me relate to the character I was playing in a way that got me interested and invested in Pokemon as a game and franchise.
Seeing a couple of comments mentioning how she was both cool and cute which I totally agree with, she definitely feels more adult and aspirational than Lyra!
KingK, is that you? Man, playing this game brings me back. Because these games were able to include as many pokemon as possible without certain gimmicks. In D/P/Pl, some pokemon were only available through the GBA slot, and being the unlucky person unable to get FR/LG, losing my Emerald copy, and having no friends to trade with, it made completing the dex not possible. The amount of time I spent at the Safari Zone just to get every possible mon' without was uncountable. EDIT: Spiky-eared Pichu is quite a confusing character. A pichu that not only cannot be traded, but cannot be transferred through Pokétransfer into the Gen V games. The unused audio blew my mind. I can't believe they weren't used in the final game
I hate and love that pichu so much. It’s stuck forever in my game, but she can never come to Pokemon home etc. it’s just unfair. I hope we can get her again :/ she was so special..
Soulsilver to this day remains my most played pokemon game in terms of total hours. I could tell even as a 10 yesr old that this game had so much time and effort put into it with just how much there was to do
Go Ichinose is such a good composer. One thing about this series that has always gotten me were the soundtracks, and its something I think Pokemon has been strong with regardless of the generation.
I absolutely loved the ability to walk everywhere with your Pokemon. It did seem a little weird how certain ones should have been gigantic but were shrunk down to I guess make it more practical, but it wasn't the biggest deal. And I was super bummed that the feature was dropped for generation 5, which was the last one I played, so I don't know if they ever brought it back.
Never in quite the same way. It was essentially entirely absent for a few generations, and only lately has been phasing back in gradually. In the most recent games you can send out a Pokémon to follow you around, and even automatically battle anything in a direction you point or pick up items for you, but some Pokémon have a hard time keeping up with you even while you're walking, and none can keep up if you're running on the bike Pokémon that's your main traversal method.
I would've liked it if Wailord at least took up 8 squares as a temporary sight gag, maybe shrink him after the first few seconds so there's no trouble with narrow spaces
> It did seem a little weird how certain ones should have been gigantic but were shrunk down to I guess make it more practical, but it wasn't the biggest deal. This made sense back when they were using sprites to represent characters and Pokémon (like in this game), but when things transitioned to proper 3D, it needed to show a sense of scale and some realism.
9:04 "In game you barely hear them over the games audio" That's an emulator problem. On an actual DS or DS like (I've been playing HeartGold a lot recently) it's pretty clear. The music dims out to make the sound effects clearer and it's very obvious.
GF was at their peak during this era. This was when they developed HGSS and BW, which had so much thoughtful attention out into making these games. After BW was financially disappointing and with the release of Pokémon Go, plus the shift to bad 3D graphics, the games really suffered.
While I love HG/SS to death, and wish we still had 2D games with animated sprites like B/W/2, I think there was soul put into the games up until the end of the DS era. Keep in mind we got things like ORAS, and Sun/Moon near the end of the DS' lifespan, and those had plenty of love put into them too. Sun/Moon was probably the most fun I've had in a Pokemon game, honestly. Just the overall vibes, amount of mechanics and features, and world, felt very immersive. I try very hard not to let nostalgia blind me, or cynicism taint my views. That said, the Switch Pokemon games have thus far felt uninspired and more "cookie-cutter" than the previous games. Arceus is the outlier, which makes sense because it was a different studio that really cared. But Sw/Sh, the DP remakes, and Sc/Sv... yeah. They have some good ideas in them, but they feel so unpolished. I miss Mega Evolution more than anything, and I hate that they have to keep trying new gimmicks every generation when Mega Evolution was arguably the smartest, and COOLEST mechanic they ever came up with.
The series also suffered from having DEI hires that the characters look old, ugly, androgynous, and porikore that even Japan is mad about what Pokémon has become. Kai/Irida is the most adorable character in the modern Pokémon games, and she is in Legends: Arceus. I do enjoy Teru/Rei and Shou/Akari from the said game as well. The anime graphics really need to come back to also allow potential for plenty of content, including the Regional and National PokéDexes, and the Exp. Share setting.
@@bugjams Uh, are you mistaking Arceus with BDSP? Because I think Arceus was in house Game Freak team, while the DP remakes are by Ilca or whatever. With Game Freak and Masuda purposely gimping those devs, making them have to keep it more faithful than anything else, from what I last heard.
@@bugjamsHonestly they could go back to sprites. Games like Octopath Traveler prove that sprite art can still exist in today's market. Many indie games also utilize sprite art and are fantastic. Or they could do a drawn style, like Hollow Knight, especially with Sugimori's art. Then they could also give 3d styled spin off games to other companies like they used to.
masterpieces that are an unbalanced mess and full of issues that the originals had that they could have fixed. i might not love oras to death but theyre the best remakes, i dont hate hgss but they are definitely nowhere close to the best pokemon games (that surround them).
@@pikminman13 Hard disagree, because they're the only remakes (along with FRLG) that don't actively do anything worse or omit something that the original games did. ORAS and BDSP outright ignore their third versions, which inherently creates the problem of questioning which version to play, and immediately strip them of the definitive version tag they could've had. Meanwhile HGSS are literally Crystal remakes split into the G/S baselines; there's nothing you lose by playin HGSS instead of Crystal (except Kris herself, RIP)
@@tamerkoh the standard isnt the games they are remaking. they are the games at that point in time. i agree that oras should have had more of emerald in it, but frlg and hgss keep all of the problems the originals had and add new problems by not adapting. at least oras acknowledged that new pokemon came into being between gens 3 and 6, meanwhile silver (character) is still using a sneasel and a magneton in the postgame. you cant even get magnezone at all, not even in kanto. oras acknowledges that gallade exists. morty doesnt use misdreavus let alone mismagius, chuck doesnt use a hitmontop, bugsy doesnt use any johto bugs, i could go on. i agree that remakes should overwrite the originals but they should also stand on their own without just being a graphical update and a mechanical update.
@@pikminman13 The things you just mentioned aren't problems though, not then and not now. You're retroactively applying expectations we've had starting with Gen 3 and 4, to Gen 2, when such expectations didn't exist. Gym Leaders weren't expected to be megaphones for new Pokemon, nor did newly introduced Pokemon mean they were native to the new region being introduced as well. The in-game lore and explanations for the new mon in Gen 2 are "Newly discovered Pokemon." Not "Pokemon from Johto," newly DISCOVERED Pokemon. This is why some new mon can only be found in Kanto, despite being introduced in Gen 2, because that was the entire point; they're all new species discovered. Going back to old areas and finding new things was part of the whole spirit of the games being executed as sequels, along with the time skip. I find it ridiculous modern Pokemon fans are applying standards we expect of new Pokemon games, like using gym leaders as megaphones for new Pokemon, to older games where that standard wasn't in place. And just because it's a remake, that doesn't mean they're obligated to change the normal story teams either. This is why all the Johto AND Kanto Gym Leaders use mon from all across the 493 total Dex in their rematch teams, not their main story teams.
I wish we had developers and programmers that still cared like in HGSS😭 Edit: I shouldn’t put the blame on the developers, because it is management that’s milking this cash cow and churning games out with no desire to really improve them. The developers don’t get time to try new things and make things better, that’s why we’re stuck with the same XY 3D models on the switch. I think most of the fan base(of any game) would prefer a delayed release date of a new generation game, than first day patches, frame rate drops and bugs
Pretty sure the developers still care about what they do. It's the fans that are never going to be satisfied with what's created since they can't recognize that every future game isn't going to live up to your childhood expectations.
The problem isn’t the devs, it’s the management and shareholders of the Pokémon company who want to milk this frenchise dry and keep on releasing games on an unsustainable pace
@@WayWardWondererThere’s also the aspect of executives forcing small development windows because they know raving fans will buy incomplete games anyway.
Heart gold and Soulsilver are absolutely my favorite Pokémon games! Walking around with my Pokémon and seeing how happy they were always put a smile on my face!
My twin from another mother! We have to get through Legends Celebi (Hot take: I’m excited for it!) and maybe… 🤢 another let’s go… before they cycle back around to Johto for real.
No, then it'd be as bad as BDSP, a lazy copy paste game yet somehow worse, HGSS deserves more. I don't disagree they should be in the eshop for like 20$, but if Johto gets remakes they deserve ORAS levels, and a Legends game (along with some PE features, say what you want about PE but it did a couple things right such as the Master trainers, and bringing Green into the franchise for the 1st time, hoping Kris gets similar treatment, having her, Lyra, and Ethan in 1 game).
I remember getting Silver as my first purchased game. I had Blue and Yellow from a christmas 2 years prior. When HGSS came out I almost cried, even though I was in highschool. Man. I miss my poke-walker.
I bought both HG and SS around 7 years ago in mint condition on ebay. even then it was costly. i'm sure now it will be even more so. i'm glad i did because retro games of all kinds are so expensive now.
So, We got Lyra instead of Kris because the Artist literally forgot how Kris looked and redesigned her without even bothering to look how she looked like and the end result looked so different that they decided to make her a different character altogether
2:26 I have to laugh at this, because a) “the relationship between Ho-oh and Lugia” is truly never really emphasised in the games, and b) it certainly doesn’t seem to add any additional context or meaning to the title of the games. “Heart and Soul” and meaningful connections with Pokemon, totally makes sense; but mentioning Ho-oh and Lugia makes almost no sense here. This kinda thing happens in Pokemon interviews quite often, like their reasoning doesn’t actually fully explain what they’re being asked lol.
What I love about the first 2 generations of Pokémon is that they feel interconnected. Even in the anime when Ho-Oh appears in the first episode. That Pokémon’s existence expanded the idea that there are more Pokémon then what the world tells you. It’s such a simple concept but it works. I loved it even more that both the Johto and Kanto regions are accessible. It doesn’t make sense that each new game has a new “undiscovered” region of Pokémon but everywhere else is inaccessible with fucking flying Pokémon at your disposal lol Not to mention the designs are actually aligned with each other between gen 1 and 2. Gen 3 was when they really started the inconsistencies in what a Pokémon should look like.
"we can't lose to a ten year old gameboy game..." as a pokemon fan it breaks my heart this isnt the mindset of modern games not wanting to lose to ten year old 3ds games or even older ds games even though i love the modern games too for different reasons you can tell it's more about getting the games out for the holiday season than anything else
Not a lot of people know that in the HG/SS they added in the GBC OST. In Goldenrod City, you can find the devs to the game like normal, but when you beat the game, you can go talk to them, one of the devs will give you a Game Boy Color. You turn it on and you get the original Game Boy Color Gold/Silver OST to play in the game.
I dunno, that's not exactly obscure Pokémon trivia, and GB Sounds definitely doesn't use the original soundtrack from GSC, though the tracks it does use are decent recreations - you can tell by comparing the instrumentation between the two. Now, what might be lesser known is the fact that in the GB Sounds tracks, there are some new songs: there are tracks for the Pokéathlon, Nintendo WiFi Plaza, and other places that didn't exist in the originals, but of note is a new track for Cinnabar Island specifically, which used the Viridian City theme in GSC, as well as one for Cerulean City and Fuchsia City; in GSC, Cerulean also used Viridian City's theme, whereas Fuchsia used Celadon's theme.
I remember the Game boy player! It was the reason I always rushed to Celadon once I cleared the Elite 4, I just was too nostalgic about the old Crystal soundtrack!
Hearing the explanation behind Kris being replaced just makes me angrier over it than I was before. "We don't want to change too much. By the way we've totally replaced one of the protagonists."
That Snorlax snore is crazy! I had no idea and I'm into datamining. That is so cool! I love the old music and random wild cries in the overworld. It made me feel like I was actually on an adventure. Just recently decompilations of FRLG found a beta Wonder News feature from a time before true internet connection on the handheld device. It would have been like record mixing in RSE but Event Card related- Speaking of which the mail hold item in RSE is in suspect due to a new glitch in the speedrunner community. Seems it had a bigger role scrapped.
I loved playing silver and Crystal growing up, and somehow HGSS took all that was great about the originals and made them 100x better. Easily the best Pokémon games imo, and huge props to the team for their dedication and attention to detail in crafting such great games
I still remember getting so hyped for it when it was announced. Looking at all the screenshots, and waiting for new updates on the game. Literally one of the last few games i was genuinely hyped for
@@thekiss2083 According to majority of fans gen 4 and 5 are the peak (including HGSS remakes in gen 4). Each leaned into their RPG roots with their stories, becoming bigger more eventful than previous games. Saying gen 1 and 2 were peak is generally frowned upon and seen as a gen wunner thing. Even though I got my start in Silver, it'd be wrong to say either Platinum or BW1 and 2 weren't at the top of the franchise, personally I say 5, then HGSS. That's most fans consensus, either gen 4 is the peak and 5 sucks, or gen 5 is peak and 4 is mid to good, a 5-6 out of 10, maybe 7 on a good day for Platinum. Especially when you throw FRLG into the ring, how are those not superior versions of gen 1? Yet they are considered gen 3 games, being you know in the middle of gen 3.
Emerald is definitely the best in Generation 3. Abilities with field effects are fun that they added different ways of getting wild Pokémon. Too bad that is gone in SV.
I also love in the Pokémon adventure heart gold and soul silver manga they made Kris wear lyras cloths with the reasoning being proving that they are one and the same, just counterparts of eachother
But they both appear as separate characters in Pokemon Masters EX, and Game Freak had a bigger hand in contributing to that game than they did to any of the Manga adaptions(Since in Japan Adventures is just one of many many manga adaptions and it is neither the oldest nor longest-running of the bunch, the title to both of those goes to the one simply called Pocket Monsters aka the one with the weird-looking talking Clefairy).
The music in those game fucked me up for knowing them for over a decade. The National Park from HG/SS that I spend HOURS in just walking around and relaxing over 10 years ago brings me to tears almost every time that I can’t listen to it without crying. I miss the DS era when it was still limited and you have to use a bit of imagination.
I always loved Silver the most as a kid, and when I heard they were remaking it I got so excited. I pre-ordered Soul Silver from Best Buy, went and picked it up on release day, got the free Poke Walker and small Lugia figure bundled with it, and absolutely loved what they did with the game, too. It's so fascinating to see many of the developers who worked on Soul Silver and Heart Gold felt the way I did about the originals and couldn't wait to give it that same love it deserved.
HG/SS were the best remakes in terms of including content from all three of the OG games. OR/AS and BD/SP mostly just stuck to the first paired versions. (Giving FR/LG a pass since those were the first)
Man... its so bittersweet seeing these comments from back then. "We can't lose to a 10 year old Game Boy Game." If only the modern devs would take the time and make a quality game with care like they used to.
It's been a year since scarlet/violet released and the best part of two since it was announced with no hint about a next game so I'm hoping they're taking their time with it and making something cool for the Switch 2. Honestly though I think there are a lot of dinosaurs at Game Freak who are happy to maintain the status quo because its easy and it sells anyway. They should get rid of those people and hopefully some are ageing out.
@@drgray6073 Definitely, and that was made by a B-team while S/V was in development and turned out the much better game, just goes to show. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was mainly the junior devs in charge of that one.
I’ve never really given much thought to what goes into making a game. It’s so cool to learn about these neat little details wrapped up in a nice presentation. Thanks for making this
7:38 I think it's interesting that when speaking and writing the words white pichu and white stew, they actually use the English word instead of the Japanese Shiro. Maybe because they're both foreign words so they go with the foreign colors, like how we would use Blanc when naming a foreign object?
This is all crazy, especially since I grew up on Silver lol. I wouldn't say HGSS are the best, and yeah nostalgia goggles and the chiptunes music makes me lean in on saying I like GSC more, but I cannot deny the journey and experience, all the love you see in HGSS, the Pokemon following you I loved and hadn't been a thing since Yellow, which only Pikachu could do even then. It did look nicer, new game elements, plot, lore and world expansion, finding out Silver's father was Giovanni in that Celebi event, the other special event of Sinjoh ruins, linking not just Johto, but also Kanto being next door to Johto, to the Sinnoh region, of which was when I got my brother's 1st Pokemon game Pearl for him for his birthday, while I had Diamond and Platinum. Pokeathalon was awesome, Olypmic styled Pokemon mini games I wish was brought back, that Rayquaza got an orb (jade orb still... odd name but ok lol) even if it wouldn't mean anything not even being used for a mega stone. Steven is there, the Crystal Suicune expanded story being included in the base plot, bringing the Safari Zone back and in full force with customizable parks. I could keep going on and on about how much love and care you can see in these games. It isn't the best imo, that'd be gen 5 because its world was just about as big, post game just as explorative, story more engaging, more characters, good character writing, good music. Even among remakes ORAS did even more additions than HGSS had... and yet without HGSS those games wouldn't exist, I'm almost certain of it. That was something you could tell, each remake did more than the last, FRLG still best Kanto game added so much, had so much love, then HGSS did even more new additions for Johto, then ORAS went even farther with its new content. Despite ORAS being better remakes that I loved, with more content I'd still say HGSS is better though... can't be helped lol, I am a Johto boy at heart and soul. Only drawback in HGSS was that the GB Sounds weren't until the national dex was complete (correction, after you get your 16th badge, the last Kanto badge), would've been nice if it'd been there just out the gate. Other than that, far and away amazing games, if another Johto remake is coming soon, whether it's Let's Go or Legends Johto, I hope as much love and care is put into it as HGSS got. Not to hate PE, it had some neat additions, bringing Green to life for the 1st time in the franchise outside of the manga for instance, but still not the definitive Kanto experience, that still lies in FRLG with how much content it drips. Hopefully they learned from PE's few flaws, and the... many of BDSP, Johto doesn't deserve anything but the best.
These really are the greatest pokemon games. I know ppl love gen 5 and consider those the best, which is understandable, but I think HGSS really had the most love put into them. I wish Game Freak would bring back that love and effort and give new games more time to develop. Tho, it's kinda funny and sad that Kris was left out due to an accident. I heavily prefer her over Lyra.
Man I had to take my Pokemon Soul Silver Big box out of the case, flip through the manual and stuff just remember the good days. Thanks for the great video as always DYKG team.
I would love a rerelease that added more Pokemon to Johto and improved the level curve just a bit. Like have Houndour be in Ilex Forest or something. Hell, I’d love a hypothetical Let’s Go Togekiss and Ursaluna to be based on these versions.
I personally disagree. I enjoyed BW2 and Ultra-SM way more, but that's maybe because I just don't like Johto as much, despite having alot of nostalgia for it.
@@segunthepikachufan1470 Definitely. even for nintendo they're the best because they have the most pokemon. That means more merch for them, and more replayability for me.
It's so obvious (and sad) that they cared so much about the games before. All games from Gen 1 to Gen 5 felt made with love. Not the case anymore with Scarlet or Sword
I’m glad I was born when I was, I think that I personally was able to experience the peak of Pokémon gameplay with Heart Gold (along with Gen 3 and the effort they put into that, ESPECIALLY emerald). They really put effort into this game, and it’s still my favorite DS game 13 yrs later.
It makes me kinda sad when you hear and saw how passionate they worked on HG/SS and if you see what bad games they making these days... They said they played GS as students, were totally flashed by the game and want kids these days gonna make the same experience... and now they deliver us rushed, ugly, empty and bugged games... im feel so bad for all these kids.
I actually love the watercolour style Sugimori used back in the day for the manga and cards. I think it would be a great art style for a whole game to be stylized with.
The watercolor art style feels distinctly "Pokemon" to me. It would be awesome to see it translated to modern character designs.

Man I wish the current GF would get the time (and technical capabilities) to create games that contain that much love

"I need releases! Yearly releases of Poke-man!"
I’d argue Pokémon in the public peaked in summer 2016 when go came out
@@cs5250 You're definitely right, Pokémon GO brought Pokémon back into the public eye in a big way.
I wish pokemon brilliant diamond and shining pearl received the love this game did.

If bdsp was made to be like platinum it’d be up there

I wish BDSP were good games
Nah, that’s karma for gen 4 fans, they needed to be humbled
The one thing I dislike about HGSS is the absence of Kris in favour of Lyra and I'm a little saddened that she was initially forgotten by the devs. Kris meant a lot to me as I could finally play as a girl in Pokemon and her hair was blue like suicune!
100% this!!! It drove me nuts that she wasn't brought back and I always wanted an answer to why she wasn't. The answwe is so frustrating yet cathartic at the same time.
Even I enjoy playing as Kris despite being a male. I just love characters that are cute and maybe cool at once.
I like both Kris and Lyra. :)
Look at that, King K. Glad to see you narrating this. Love this.
EDIT:
Spiky-eared Pichu is quite a confusing character.
They really are the best Pokemon games and it's not even close.
Emerald is slightly better imo

9:04 "In game you barely hear them over the games audio"
That's an emulator problem.
BW wasn't disappointing at all. XY actually had less sales than it until GO boosted them.
The love for this games that i had and still retain today is insane they really were a masterpiece.
masterpieces that are an unbalanced mess and full of issues that the originals had that they could have fixed. i might not love oras to death but theyre the best remakes, i dont hate hgss but they are definitely nowhere close to the best pokemon games (that surround them).
@@pikminman13 That's a funny way of saying you're bad at the game.
I wish we had developers and programmers that still cared like in HGSS😭
Edit: I shouldn’t put the blame on the developers, because it is management that’s milking this cash cow and churning games out with no desire to really improve them.
@@WayWardWonderer
Childhood expectations = games that run at a stable framerate, apparently
@@WayWardWondererno buggy gameplay isnt childhood expectations
The problem isn’t the devs, it’s the management and shareholders of the Pokémon company who want to milk this frenchise dry and keep on releasing games on an unsustainable pace

The Lugia Battle theme is certainly impressive in its complexity. But I can't say it's my favourite Pokemon song.

What’s stopping you from playing it on your DS or 3DS?
No, then it'd be as bad as BDSP, a lazy copy paste game yet somehow worse, HGSS deserves more. I don't disagree they should be in the eshop for like 20$, but if Johto gets remakes they deserve ORAS levels, and a Legends game (along with some PE features, say what you want about PE but it did a couple things right such as the Master trainers, and bringing Green into the franchise for the 1st time, hoping Kris gets similar treatment, having her, Lyra, and Ethan in 1 game).

Game Freak really was on their 90s Jordan run with the DS mainline games.
So, We got Lyra instead of Kris because the Artist literally forgot how Kris looked and redesigned her without even bothering to look how she looked like and the end result looked so different that they decided to make her a different character altogether
Honestly the best part about these games compared to many of the others was the ability to walk around with your pokemon
It doesn’t make sense that each new game has a new “undiscovered” region of Pokémon but everywhere else is inaccessible with fucking flying Pokémon at your disposal lol
Not to mention the designs are actually aligned with each other between gen 1 and 2. Gen 3 was when they really started the inconsistencies in what a Pokémon should look like.
Gen 1 and 2 were so good. It just got more ridiculous in designs after
"we can't lose to a ten year old gameboy game..." as a pokemon fan it breaks my heart this isnt the mindset of modern games not wanting to lose to ten year old 3ds games or even older ds games even though i love the modern games too for different reasons you can tell it's more about getting the games out for the holiday season than anything else
Still playing this beautiful gem today!! Will forever be a favorite indeed.
This is quite well known
That's cool
GB sounds are found in Celadon City
I remember the Game boy player! It was the reason I always rushed to Celadon once I cleared the Elite 4, I just was too nostalgic about the old Crystal soundtrack!
Hearing the explanation behind Kris being replaced just makes me angrier over it than I was before. "We don't want to change too much. By the way we've totally replaced one of the protagonists."
It kind of got worse with ORAS when there are no Emerald elements like the Battle Frontier, Gym Leader rematches, and the Mew event.

According to majority of fans gen 4 and 5 are the peak (including HGSS remakes in gen 4).

I started the Pokemon series with Gold, so HGSS was magical

So I'm not the only one. I had to fight back the urge to cry at random points in this video.

My first real Pokémon game I played and beat fully. What an experience
(Giving FR/LG a pass since those were the first)
I play these remakes all the time, but hope we get another one for switch or switch 2 🙏

Oh my god, KingK! Way to go, I love his video essays!
Correction: You get GB Sounds after beating all Kanto Gyms, not the national dex completion.

Ah ok my bad. Been too long lol, and still a thing that unlocks way to late to enjoy.
DYKG doesn't miss, even after all these years. I hope you never run out of nintendo facts to tell us
I believe every single word this man says because it is exactly what I want to hear.
I love SoulSilver, my favorite game in the Pokémon franchise.
I really wish they used that snorlax overworld sound. It sounds perfect for the situation.
Awesome to include translations for preservations sake, that made me sub before even watching the rest of the video. Props!
Im a simple person. I see HGSS content, I instantly watch.
Did You Know: I'm the guy who got the autobiography for Dr Lava for that spikey eared Pichu info :D
Thanks again Webbstre :)
@@DJIVision You're still around! I quit Twitter at one point, so I lost track of you ;)
@@WebbstreMain No worries, I hardly ever use Twitter anymore either :)
Would love to rebuy Heartgold, sadly lost it many years ago and I am still depressed about it ngl
Such a masterpiece.
I lost mine too, it's the only game I spent so much time in, sad
I’m truly happy to have gotten my hands on both of these games.
They really are the best Pokémon installments. It’s seriously wild how they took my favorite generation and improved it immensely.
more thumbs up than my hands can give for posting those translations very cool
Man I had to take my Pokemon Soul Silver Big box out of the case, flip through the manual and stuff just remember the good days. Thanks for the great video as always DYKG team.
Crazy to compare this to more recent games
I would love a rerelease that added more Pokemon to Johto and improved the level curve just a bit. Like have Houndour be in Ilex Forest or something.
Hell, I’d love a hypothetical Let’s Go Togekiss and Ursaluna to be based on these versions.
I thought fans decided on Marill lmao instead
Why would you want another Let's Go game with cut content and simplified mechanics?
HGSS are as dear to me today as they were on release. They surpassed the hype.
"We can't lose to a 10 year old game boy game" Too bad game freak doesn't think like this anymore
I personally disagree. I enjoyed BW2 and Ultra-SM way more, but that's maybe because I just don't like Johto as much, despite having alot of nostalgia for it.
The odd numbered generations seem to have less flaws than the even one's
@@segunthepikachufan1470 Definitely. even for nintendo they're the best because they have the most pokemon. That means more merch for them, and more replayability for me.
Great hearing KingK !! :)
HG/SS is definitely great, but it's not really in my top five. I'm more into D/P/Pt and US/UM. This video is making me wanna replay HG/SS though. 😊
Ultra-Games gang
I love Primarina so much, such a pretty Pokemon
I love Pokémon so f--king much, makes me feel alive and nostalgic every single time I play!!!
It's so obvious (and sad) that they cared so much about the games before. All games from Gen 1 to Gen 5 felt made with love. Not the case anymore with Scarlet or Sword
It's heartbreaking to think we will probably never get games like those back 😢
Didn't expect to hear KingK here!
Best pokemon games
Well said
