- FedEx Ground | A Day In The Life (How To Hook Up Doubles)
A long time ago.... I filmed my very first UA-cam video! Lol, these are not my finest moments, but we all start somewhere. We grow, and we learn. I know if I was to do this video over, I'd do a much better job of explaining everything. I also wouldn't forget to include so many details.
I have by no means explained every detail that goes into how to hook up FedEx Ground doubles. However, I believe this is a pretty good overview to give you an idea of how it all works.

Thank you so much for posting! I literally start with Fed Ex hauling doubles on Monday. So this video is perfect to watch 👌
Oh yay congratulations! Welcome to the family! 💜💚
Remember the adage...you go down the hill the same way you go up. Slow and easy.
I pulled the same when Fed Ex Ground was ROADWAY PACKAGE SYSTEMS.
I did my test in a blinding downpour in Scramento....the next night I was pulling over Donner on my way to Chicago.
Been operating since I was a kid, with my dad's 10 wheelers. But, I'd only hooked up and took a drive one time....the only experience I had.
I sure made some good ducats for a couple of years!
Once you really get the feel, you'll be white knuckled most of the time.
Tap er Light, and maintain your speed. You'll be fine.
Good Luck!
ONE MORE THING!! Although the long hauls are in short supply...keep in mind this.
Get to know your McNally's and study the hell out of your mileage.
If you can't go eastbound on 80 from Sac.
Head down 99 and jump on I-40. From Sacramento to Chicago the difference in miles is 110...that's only 2.5 hrs.
There are always ways around...75% of the time.
Make sure you can grab a light gear for your pup...you'll thank me later!
what,s your name
Fascinating job on the doubles💪

Lol I literally just spent 10 mins watching someone hook up to a trailer. I don’t regret it...😎🤙🏼
😅🤣
robbie G she doesn’t have a husband bro or a boyfriend. Don’t be so salty. 😎🤙🏼. Let a brother just enjoy the view.
robbie G I don’t feed the trolls...but for you I’ll make an exception...obviously she has a camera man look in the description it gives his name etc... 😂🤣🙄. My bubble is good bro you’re the one sounding like somebody peed in his Cheerios this morning.
@robbie GYou're wrong. In her previous video she states that the camera man isn't allowed to touch anything on the truck. She's the trucker, he's the camera man/video editor. If it hurts your masculine pride that she can do what your precious Indiana Jack can do, go home and cry to your mama.
@robbie G come back when you become Robert or Bob.
Been driving a long time, and I have to give you props for doing one simple thing most people skip. Sticking your head in there, and visually looking to make sure the fifth wheel hooked is never with skipping. Watched a guy drop one in our yard this morning.
Oh my! I’m too paranoid not to look.
@@ShelbyHBTM
Many years ago I was pulling a flatbed trailer, with 46,000+lbs of drywall on the deck, that completely unhooked doing 70mph while I was headed I-68W in West Virginia.
This happened right around the 17 mile marker early in the morning.
I had hooked to a preloaded trailer a couple of days before in PA and went home for the weekend. I dropped the trailer and took the truck home to clean inside and wash it.
With the weekend over, I re-hooked and made three ninety degree turns and traveled about 8 miles total before I felt a little 'bump' just after coming back out of overdrive.
I looked back in my mirror(s) and sparks were flying everywhere!
Another driver, I had recently passed, was screaming on the CB that my trailer had just came unhooked! That driver was about as nervous as I was!
I was so dumbfounded by what I was seeing that I let the truck slow to a point where the trailer was now sliding towards me! Talk about a fireworks display!
Thank God there wasn't traffic beside of me, along with the fact of having a big enough engine to be able to roll back into the fuel and pull away from the trailer without the possibly of missing a gear due to the excitement level!
The trailer slid for a good distance, uphill, before coming to a sizzling and asphalt boiling stop.
One of the dolly legs was on the verge of rolling completely under the trailer but the trailer was still resting on both legs, nevertheless!
Had it slid much further, that leg would have collapsed and there would have been a load of drywall scattered everywhere! I didn't have a single broken sheet upon delivery!
For a long period of time afterwards there were gouge marks from the trailer dolly pads up the hill.
The wrecker service came out with a tow truck and a bob tail tractor to see what needed to be done. Summers Towing was a great help! summerstowing.com
We were going to re-hook the trailer onto my tractor but the fifth wheel wouldn't unlock.
They took the trailer to their shop and I went to New Stanton, PA Kenworth to have the fifth wheel checked.
It turned out the fifth wheel was worn out and needed rebuilt! The safety latch was even wedged from where the trailer had came unhooked.
A few people have said that it was my fault because I either high coupled or that I didn't get completely latched but it was the worn out fifth wheel that caused the unhook.
The mechanic at the Kenworth shop said that it was in no way my fault, he showed me the fifth wheel after he had removed it and had flipped it over.
I had driven a tractor pulling trailers for at least seven years at that point and a total of driving commercially for about twelve!
So, I wasn't a rookie, nor was I a complacent driver.
I had just started working for the owner of the truck the day before I picked up the load. It had been his personal tractor, until he bought his new one.
The phone call to him that early morning was a very pleasant experience, considering what had just taken place.
I broke the bad news to him first and followed up with the BLESSING that no one was hurt and there wasn't a major accident or damage! He wasn't upset or anything!
I commend you for the way you coupled to the trailer! You did not slam into it like a lot of drivers do.
Backing up and slamming the king pin is what causes premature wear on fifth wheels and failures such as mine!
I have always hooked in the same fashion as you and the individual that you replied to, Steve N.
I always have crawled under the trailer to visually check if the fifth wheel was locked and I've always carried a flashlight, even during the day, to shine back onto the lock!
Always gave the trailer a tug / pull test, just to be sure.
By the way, my first trailer experience was a petroleum tanker in the beginning of winter all the while learning how to back up, too!
Keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down!
Safe travels and may it be an enjoyable journey!
I always give a tug and look at the jaw to make sure it's locked on the kingpin. It only takes 1 time cranking a loaded trailer back up to learn your lesson.
Best FedEx ad I've ever seen
What I like most about this video it shows that she likes what she does and she puts 100% into it
I also have to jump on the dolly to connect my air lines lol ! Struggles of being 5ft lol ! Great video! When I hauled Fed Ex doubles, this is exactly how I would connect my trailers! Be safe out there amiga! 🙏🏼🤘🏼
I don't drive truck, but work around a bunch of trucks at my job so I appreciate you teaching people about different things like this. It makes me look less stupid when I know what the drivers are talking about and I can even help out occasionally!
People like you are what makes a company great.!
Loved the bloopers. Your energy is amazing and contagious. Keep smiling and truck on.
Most graceful truck driver I've ever seen
Shelby, you’ve got such a beautiful smile! And you make a great trainer, they way you break everything down and explain it in simple terms. Safe trucking!!
Keep up the great work Shelby! This channel is going to boom! The camera work, drone shots and edits are spot on! Far superior to other big trucker channels and so entertaining!
I really like your video. I'm planning on learning trucking and it is very helpful to see a girl doing it! Thanks for the great work both you and your cameraman!
You’re a Really Upbeat and FUN person. Your videos are Very Informative and Easy for Everyone to understand. NO surprise your Channel is Growing really Quickly. Thanks! 👍
Thank you so much for posting! I literally, start with Fed Ex hauling doubles on Monday. This video is perfect to watch!
That's Awesome!! In 20 years driving, this is my first time seeing this :):):) Well done!
Shelby, you're SO human, ALIVE and Beautiful! Stellar Expository and Effort! Loved it. 🔥❤
Hmmm
I'm taking a new job pulling doubles! I was so hoping you had a video like this! Thank you Shelby!!
That might be one of the most informative things I've seen on youtube. I've always wondered what exactly those connections were for. I've thought about doing this once or twice in my life but now that I'm closer to 50 than I am from it, I can't see well driving in the dark anymore. You're a badass! Love the videos! I'm glad youtube recommended! Thanks for creating them.
Good educational video! I’ve never pulled doubles and often wondered how the process of getting the dollies and the set together worked.
This is an awesome video - tutorial type - liked it!! Keep bringing these great videos Shelby.
That was fun to watch 👍 during college, I used to work as a Package Handler, so see this just adds a little bit to seeing and learning the process of how the trucks get going.
You nailed it!! Wish you had this video 2 years ago! This is such a big help to all aspiring truckers. Thanks to you and your Company! Very well suggested and recommended video! More power...
I’m just impressed that you didn’t get grease all over your hair when you climbed under the trailer to check the locking jaws.
Lots of practice 😁
I have no idea how this ended up in my recommended but no regrets I’ve always wondered how y’all hook up a trailer. Plus you’re super easy on the eyes.
Wonderful video!! i still find it useful after one year! Quite grateful to have you in trucking industry!
Brought back good memories of hooking doubles when I worked for CF before they went out of business. Great video. Thanks Davin
Who woulda thought watching how to hook up a double would be so dang entertaining!
Happy Valentines Day!
There's a guy who does this on our yard every night. I've never actually paid this much attention....
Also the scenery shots in your other videos are pretty cool. Kudos to your cameraman.
I shared your video with a friend of mine who is as tiny as you. She said she's no doubt she can learn how to truck. The confidence in you tiny folk amazes me.
Any who good video, I'll stick to refer because im trying to watch my figure and don't wanna lose any of this hard earned trucker belly.
Roll on
I just found this channel last night and have been binge watching ever since. I'm addicted!!
Wonderful video, very informative and interesting to those of us that don’t know much about trucking. And what a beautiful 😀
Lack of experience and knowledge combined with a few company regulations can buy and construct places like Primatara, a 188 acre nag farm with a 70,640 sq/ft shack. Same can also produce "Liver Belly" which may become a tombstone eulogy, based to lack of experience and knowledge. Enjoy!
This is actually a really cool video. I just learned something new today. Thanks...
I've been driving for almost 5 years now and I see these dollys all over at FedEx terminals and now I know how they get hooked to the doubles after watching this video. It looks time consuming to me. Great energy and passion for the job Shelby!
I'm a New Subscriber!!! I'm actually going to attending CDL Trucking School this year and this video has inspired me!! Ain't nothing like a hard-working woman!! Thanks for sharing your journey, experience and tips :)
Truly yours,
Tim
Me was like: "Can`t believe it, OMG" when you were pulling those heavy dollies! You`re the cutest and tough girl in one.
@Mars Exulte Actually I am. The regular girl would be afraid of even staying or touching that tractors and dollies. But Shelby is adorable and brave one!
Not gonna lie headed straight for the comments
I love how u add the bloopers so we can all tell it's not as simple as u make it look. No body makes it look that simple and explains about all a person needs to know to do it right. Thanks for all the work u put into teaching people.
I've showed a few guys ur videos then asked them why they find it so hard. Thanks again and b safe out there.
Awww oh my gosh you are so kind. ☺️
Man!! Seeing these trucks on the freeways everyday. I didn’t know this is how the trailers are hooked up with the dolly like that. Thank you! I learned something new today. 😀👍🏼
Wow, you’re amazing! I would never want to move doubles, my back is killing me just watching you!
I was kind to our LCV drivers. One guy bribbed me with a coffee everyday to help ! Dropped rear trailer in a good spot . Drivers set up dolly then I would hook up lead trailer . Stuck around long enough to test all lights . Then he just had to hook and go !! A 53 and tandem axle shunt truck is easy. Give me a bunk truck and short trailers and I would be completely lost !! My 1st shunt truck was a 84 GM General.
Now that's one hell of a woman.
Keep on trucking girl! You're awesome!
😍
Sexy too!!
Your an inspiration to the young ladies out there who think they are incapable of jaming gears.. I showed both my daughters your channel.. keep on truckin young lady.. yee yee 🤘🤘👍👌
I have to do a Road test tomorrow and I have my doubles but never ran them ......but you have saved my life Thank You !!!!
Me: There is nothing on UA-cam during quarantine.
UA-cam: Here you go!
Me: *now addicted and have something to watch*
😂
There are a ton of free full length movies on youtube.
This is the only truck driving channel I watch
Thank you for the videos
It’s great to see a younger generation wanting and willing to work
Good luck with your Journey
Please be safe on the roads
Looking forward to more videos
You know after 30 years of driving I just learned a couple of things in this video great job.
My hats off to you, I never fooled around with doubles for a reason. Their called a wiggle wagon for a reason.
doubles are easy. Try triples
Hottest American driver by far!
Very informational too.
New subby for life here!
Keep the movies coming ❤️
I've never fell in love with a trucker before. You are amazing.
I never thought about how the doubles were hooked up.Man what a pain!! You did a nice job of showing how its done! Thankyou.Love your videos. Please keep them coming!! Take Care Steve
I know grown men who can’t make it look that easy. I watch them everyday at work and laugh. Good job!! Been dragging doubles for a long time. One of these day I’m gonna learn to back a dolly behind my lead trailer. I may retire first 🤷♂️
I hear this so much! When I used to train people I’d have them back a dolly for a solid hour 😂 it was so much fun and so many laughs! I used to do the orientation and a full day of training with new hires. I’d run through everything super hands on. Always setting people up to succeed!
I worked for Estes for a cpl years, watching the old boys back that dolly behind their lead and hook their tail was impressive. I got decent at backing the dolly behind the lead but not that good
gun freak , you don’t help them?. I do at work all the time.
@@anthonymartinez8488 Good man too many people stand back and watch shtf.
Don't let an old farmer back stuff up. They will break your ego. My grandfather thought nothing of backing a steerable wagon, hooked off center to an offset bailer into a barn, tractor and all, in about 5 minutes. I shrugged and gave up. :)
Pretty easy to stay in shape with all the work you do
K L you would think so. But its hard staying in shape doing trucking.
@@abdallahghani4754 Round is a shape... LOL
great videos. your energy and excitement are contagious. wonderful videos, love the little dog thoughts as well. Thanks for sharing, and be careful out there on the road.
That totally rocked. I just completed "Tanker" doubles and triples next.
Great video.
Thanks for sharing - fascinating! You'd be a great master-instructor :-)
you wanna go viral? Do one about life on the road with the dog. really well shot . These are lovely.
This was great information for me. I just got my cdl and my doubles endorsement. Hoping to start working for FedEx in the next few months. Thanks so much!
Glad I stumbled across this. Your energy is refreshing. I really enjoy seeing women kicking ass and taking names. Not even five minutes in I had to give a like. You really know your stuff, and should be an inspiration to everyone. I'm short too, so I have to use my weight to haul things around! I feel that struggle, but you don't let it get to you or even look winded. Great job, keep it up.
Well done 👍!!!! Is nice to see that there is some professionals out there ! Keep it up 🙏👊🙂
This was awesome 👏. U found the best camera/edit guy! U 2 are gonna brake youtube!
He is pretty cool 😎
This girl is crazy amazing!! I was wondering why she was going under the truck.... learning lots about this job! Very inspirational!!
I think im in love! Keep up the good work girl! Awesome to see someone like you doing that iob very well! Stay safe on the highways! Keep on rollin!
:-) Wow, you so remind me of my neighbor. attitude, smile and similar appearance.
i honestly love how smooth Fedex Ground trailers pull! i drive for Fedex Freight and our equipment doesn't pull as smoothly.
They have air ride even on their dollies. And us at Freight, we still run damn Silver Eagles with those 5th wheels on top of leaf springs. Our dollies suck.
@@Gun_Talk yeah they do! I’ve seen countless silver eagles and still say “Viking” on them!😂🤷♂️
My nephew loved watching this, i really enjoy and love watching your videos 🙂🙂❤
Absolutely beautiful and very smart and intriguing been a truck driver for 10 years now the age 32 and that was well worth the watch 😍
Hey Shelby :) nice video, I thought it was really well made and your really great to watch.
Im in my first year trucking, and my question is: what do you do to fight fatigue/tiredness when your behind the wheel?
Stop and sleep.
Lol I’m the Xfinity tech that hooked your internet up keep killin it
Hell yeah! It was nice to meet you this morning!
@Randy Rodes How? He just said he's the guy that set her internet up. What's wrong with that?
@@jonnywilson9117 haters want to hate on someone.
Sad that you call someone a creeper just for saying hi.
@@ShelbyHBTM Bahaha! That's funny, getting a comment from the actual internet technician!
Thanks for share another wonderful video Shelby you are hard worker and great driver !
Well regarding your bloopers, out of the mouths of truckers... I mean babes! 🤣😂😇 I don’t know how many times I’ve been smiling only to curse like a trucker. I’ve often wanted to drive a truck but you’re doing it with common sense and wisdom. You’re making it look simple and doing it nothing like I thought it would have to be done. I never thought someone could handle those dollies like you did. I’m definitely impressed! When I’m around trucks I drive the forklifts so it’s amazing how many cheat by writing arrows and up down by the crank. That solves the problem of knowing which way to turn it. Keep smiling!!😁🙂😊
Good morning Shelby
Yay
Show them how we do Shelby!!!! 💪🏻
Hey girl!!! 🥰
This somehow got in my recommendation list. I’ve subscribed lol. I’m a mechanic for tractor and trailer. Good to see the other side of our industry. Good job camera 🎥 man, and you doing ur thing girl 👏👏
Thank You For This Video Made My New Future Adventure more Simple. I am testing Tomorrow for my Doubles n Triples. Thank You made the Chapter More Understandable.
God Bless Be Safe Out There
I just got home from being out for a week on the road and im watching these tractor trailer videos lol smh
You’re so beautiful and smart and capable !
Yingnan Zhou dang right she is beautif. I would go team driving without a doubt
No Azz No PLAZZ
Getting out of the military next month to start as a Fed Ex double hauler in August, so excited!
Good job Shelby! I have watched all of you vids, which are very good. Keep them coming. I hope you are enjoying your trucking career. I retired and now I am back driving for a local company part time. I miss "over the road." There are so great people and beautiful scenery out there on the open road. Miss the sunrises when driving across the great planes, the mountains of the west. Yes I have been up I-15 into Idaho Falls etc. Keep alert, and watch out for jerks.
I’m very proud of you for showing people that you can also do a man job. Don’t ever stop believing in yourself.
You have the most beautiful smile 😍
Been driving for Fedex Freight for a while now, but now Ground needs help so we are helping out the family 😊 I have a ground bid 3 times per week and the other 2 days I run for Freight.
This is still fun to watch.
Never thought I'd enjoy watching a video about hooking up truck trailers. Ha. But here I am. Another enjoyable video Shelby.
Way skillful. Somthing tells me this is not the only trade she knows well. Curious of her backstory
I've never seen anyone get on top of the dolly like that.
Watch for grease!!
Most people aren't full of unstoppable determination and 4' tall LOL
Great Video Shelby!! First time I've watched how to hook up doubles. Always wondered, and now I know. Great Job you are doing out there. Love Dakota too, what a beautiful shepherd.
I’m vey impressed with your professionalism, you did a great job explaining this process. For a tiny lady you swing those dolly wheels around as good as anyone. For any woman wanting to get into trucking and thinking it’s to hard, needs to watch your videos! 😀👍
Young lady I have to ask who's your camera person? They're doing a great job.
The camera mans info is in the description , did you even check? a
Also she mentioned it in the previous video.
Exactly!
I checked, doesn’t really explain. You guys seem touchy about it. Is he her boyfriend?
@@1214101 this guy has a point, cuz I mean come on what guy goes on long trips just to record..you know they banging lol.
Sorry you got the grumpy folks.
Hey boys believe me who will marry this beautiful girl will not regret. This girl is real gold.
You are awesome Shelby! You make this so interesting and I'm not even a truck driver. Love Dakota too!
I hope you have a great life in trucking. I love driving OTR but I had a family to get back to. So I had to find a local job. Now 22 years later I'm a public works snowplow driver, and I love my job. Keep the shining side up. Be safe love what you do. A big 10-4
The bloppers are hilarious, with you being in Utah how did you manage to get a filming company from Florida to ride and film you throughout the day or days. That has to be costly.
Friends!
I wish I could team drive with her. Lit 🔥 😂
It was a FedX driver who showed me how to back up doubles. Great to watch keep on.
Good job girl!
That is alot of work to do, before you even leave the yard. Enjoyed the video.
that looks like such a pain in the ass, makes me much more content hauling tanker's. lol
@Austin Afridi try hauling cars lazy
Try dollar tree unloading 40 thousand pounds of freight by hand 3 times a week!!
Why would I want to try anything harder then what I currently do? Lol
Hauling liquid is good money, aerodynamic trailers I don’t wait too load or unload. And I can get into tighter spots at truck stops. Only down side is freezing my ass off in the winter and trailers valves freezing since I’m in Canada. Haha
@@dakotarussell5941 In my book, you won this one, hands down! Keep up the good work driver, we gotta make it through this toilet paper apocalypse! Thanks for all you do.👍👍😎
Tanker sounds good. Can't be much harder than heavy haul in Alberta during winter.😄
3:37 I know you said that you released the brakes on the dolly. But PLEASE do not jerk your body like that. When you do that, you put unneeded strain on your lower back. Lift up slowly then use your entire body to pull the dolly.
It’s not a race and never should be. Due to my safe practices over the years, at 41 I am very flexible and crawl in attics and such. During my time building submarines, I worked with a bunch of 20 year olds who were flabbergasted by the fact I could maneuver my body.
IIII'm too sexy for my dolly, too sexy for my subby, too sexy by FAarRrr...😁🤭
I always see FedEx hauling doubles. But never ever seen them being put together or taken apart. Thank you for making this video.
Man, that's a lot of work before you even start driving!!! Great video...very informative to us non-truckers!
