i was always told from yt videos that "sonic r is bad but the ost is good" UNTIL i watched a video that shows how simple the controls rlly are. the game is actually RLLY FUN when yk what yuur doing
YEAH. Like. I often compare the controls to something like Monkey Ball as far as platformers go, because you are very slippery and have a lot of momentum to carry around. Just because it doesn't control like Mario 64 doesn't mean its a bad game! Especially when it's also a racing game and has many racing mechanics and physics as well.
@@FOOLYCOREY yep! everything in the game works together very well when you play the game like you're supposed to, instead of trying to play it like something it never was.
@@Hard_Pretzel and thats the thing with a lot of sonic games where ppl dont rlly know how to play them. they simply try to go fast when theres so many other elements at play that should be taken into consideration. makes it 10x more satisfying when u know everything thats coming to u and yuur able to just cruise thru every stage like its nothing
@@FOOLYCOREY thats why I have so many videos on games with bad reputations. They all have fun and interesting mechanics that are designed for replaying the game. It's also why I'm not the biggest fan of a lot of boost Sonic, because it's fairly straightforward and the mechanics are obvious from the start.
I try to stay relatively "eh like what you wanna like, hate what you wanna hate" but when it comes to Sonic R--OH I am throwing hands. This game has been dragged through the mud for things it didn't even do wrong. Even if I am the ONLY Sonic R Fan, I will keep at it.
Been in this same camp about Sonic R for a while, this game is so much fun when you play it for what it is and don't compare it to things it isn't trying to be
Y'know you are kind of a breath of fresh air in the Sonic UA-cam space, we are in a diverse and divise fandom, yet a lot of the big name SonicTubers opinions end up kinda being the same I don't know if my rambling makes sense, that might be true for other fandoms as well, but oh well!
I've hated a lot of the sonictuber space for a very long time for that exact reason! I genuinely don't care if people *actually* don't like games. Even Sonic R. But when people are just being negative without even trying it for themselves to see WHY someone COULD like it? Nah. Thats why I started doing youtube! Somebody's gotta stick up for the little guys with their weird hobbies. 😂 Thanks for watching! Hope you look forward to the other videos I have coming in the future!
I finally picked up the game like two weeks ago and after 100%ing it, my honest to god reaction was, “Damn, this is awesome, we actually hate this?” (Also I’m a fan of how you edit your videos. Keep it up👍)
it really blows my mind just how many sonic fans were gullible enough to take what some youtuber said at face-value without even *REALLY* trying the game for themselves. 🤣 It's been so refreshing to find so many people willing to give this game a chance now and finally realize what I've been saying since 1997 😂 So glad you're enjoying my content. I spend way too long on these things lol
I used to be the same way really, but with how vast and diverse the zones are, and the amount of characters that had to be coordinated for each zone; we wouldn't see huge open areas like this until Adventure, and even then theres a lot of 'hallway' and 'corridoor' level design where you can only progress in a single way with a single character. Definitely fair for the time, but also why this game would not do very well today.
it's either that or 3 hour video essay rants on games they didn't even play! 😂 With how many different styles of Sonic there are, it makes sense not EVERY game will be for EVERYONE, but I feel like people forget that you can just *not play* games you don't want to play; and that any game, no matter how much I hate it, has SOMETHING to enjoy for SOMEONE.
i love your channel, you give a look on sonic games that people hate, and show the game from a different perspective! also why u got so many copies of sonic R, even back then lol
Pretty sure the first dupe was an accident--I always loved Sonic and everyone knew, but they didn't know what they were buying for me, so when Christmas came, and then my birthday (January 25th) i'd get a dupe 😂 The gems collection collection is more recent. I started collecting them when I'd see them for cheap. My first one came from a closing down furniture store that had a TV section.
Guys. I think im going to binge and leave a comment on each video. Bro is actually making me want to play Sonic R again. I never thought it was bad, but i never knew it was this good either. Im bout to dive deeper.
Sonic R is my all-time favorite game, and I play a LOT of games. Other games I like, also have a lot of the same elements, so if you end up liking Sonic R, you may like the other games I talk about too!
@@Hard_Pretzel I think you should check out SRB2 if you haven't. It's really rising up the ranks as one of my favorite games. The more I play through it, the more I realize how genius the level design, characters, and content design are. Most people come to the game for mods, but I think the base game itself is highly underrated because of these elements.
Thank you for this thoughtful and intelligent analysis of an excellent game. Games media has ruined the way most people talk about videogames, Content like this can heal that.
I hope so! It's just hard to gain traction in these spaces if you're NOT unfairly bashing low hanging fruit for clicks. Theres a reason to love every game, and every game is someone's favorite. I'd rather see why people have fun than insist a game is "bad"
@@Hard_Pretzel I will say not EVERY game is great however if we can discuss why the great games are great and the flaws of the not so great ones in a way that still shows the intentions of the developers and doesn't insult their hard work (because lets be honest most of us can't do what they do and their most flawed creations are usually due to unfair time constraints by publishers) we can start to have REAL discussions about why games are great and not weird hate boners and bash fests. Those all seem so disingenuous and pernicious to discourse in general. Sonic is great and I CAN tell you why lol (random note: Hypland just dropped an official Sonic collab that features a Sonic R hoody!)
@@sonicslayton to me it depends what you're looking for in a game. What is a great game to one person will never be great to everyone: my priorities and preferences in games are replayable and short; whereas someone else could prioritize fuller single experiences. obviously devs are often dealt a bad hand, and people need to lay off; but enjoyment of a game is always going to be separate to the perceived state of the game by someone else. Unless the game is quite literally just some cheap recolored shovelware, cancelled+used as a tax write off, or a straight up cr.ypt0 farm; definitely wouldn't say *every game is great* but if someone said they had fun and they think it's great, whatever I think of it doesn't matter. (edit: yeah! my friend sent me links. it's gorgeous. unfortunately I can't afford it)
@@Hard_Pretzel I do believe whether one personally likes a game or not, there are standards we can judge something by which to discern its quality, or lack thereof. I personally don't like RPGs or find them very fun however, I know a quality RPG when I see one and when it isn't. These are the kinds of "reviews" and discussion I want to see more of. Sonic R is a high quality game whether you find it fun and engaging or not.
I'm so happy to find a fellow Sonic R nut that can actually articulate what makes the game so fun lol. It's the kind of game that will confuse everybody going into it due to just how different it is from literally anything else, but what it brings to the table is so unique and alluring that nothing else would've compared anyway. Awesome video!
glad you liked it! it's my all time favorite game. I love meeting other friends of Sonic R! Just how people hate it because it's not like any other game, I LOVE IT because it's not like any other game.
Honestly, I think Sonic R has such a satisfying control scheme to master that a full on 3D Sonic platformer with level design and controls similar to this would be very interesting. I know a lot of people would hate that, but just imagine mastering the controls and soeedrunning a 5 minute long stage or something, doing skips and taking different routes. I think it could be incredibly satisfying. Also wanna say sorry for spamming your vids with comments, I just discovered your channel and I’m really enjoying the vids!
@@TehJellyLord haha no worries. I try to read every comment I get and it's always great to find people that appreciate the games like I do, or even give these games another try. There's a lot to learn and love in so many games.
If a Sonic game exists, someone will come out of the woodwork to defend it. I bet there are Sonic Blast defenders out there. That said, this is a very well done video. I was surprised by the sub count after seeing the editing quality. I personally don’t think the game is very good, but it’s not the worst out there, and I wish SEGA gave this style of Sonic racing game another chance so they could improve upon it, instead of making sub-standard Mario Kart rip offs.
haha funny you mention Blast, because I actually already made a video on that one. 😂 Not necessarily defending it, but I definitely had a fun time with it obviously not every game is for every person, and everyone looks for different things in a game before they call it "good" For example, I ONLY like short games that are super replayable. Anything longer than 10 hours is absolutely unplayable to me--and I know DARN well people consider anything under 40 to be unplayable. Or as you mentioned those ridiculous sonic kart racers when Sonic R is literally right here! It's all just tastes, preferences, and biases. If every game were judged THE SAME, Sonic Forces has very few serious bugs, so is it now better than Frontiers (pop in issues, crashes, frame drops, etc)? Sonic Spinball has some of the best environment design and boss artwork of any sonic game, is it now better than Sonic Generations (literally just a white void and purple fart cloud bad guy)? Everybody's got different priorities, so even as much as I hate certain games, it ain't my business to dog on them, ya know? 🤣
its crazy how 10 minutes of practice already has you pretty solid at the game. I did live demos for the thing at RetroGameCon (NY) and SonicExpo (Dallas) and people that had NEVER played before were getting first. It's an easy game, you just gotta get past that mental barrier.
@@Hard_Pretzel I honestly got way better at moving with your "stop holding up to run" advice from your second vid and istg i will destroy my little brother if he ever plays it with me now lol
@CheezItMuncherZack make it even more of a challenge! one of my favorite things to do was let my little brother pick a "good" character (like super sonic) and I'd try to race them as any number of other characters that aren't as good! Have fun! thanks for watching!
These games were around before youtube existed, and they'll be around after its gone. 😤 people that hate fun are just being over-critical jerks to try and get clout from some giant creator that doesn't even know they exist lmao.
@@Hard_Pretzel if people are finding enjoyment out of the game why stop it? that just means no one gets to have fun and I hate that mentality, I've played sonic r a few times and never really thought it was something for me. But if you enjoy the game good for you man, keep enjoying it and keep having fun :)
@@The_Tamar definitely. Finding people able to keep that separation between "not for me, but you do you" and "THIS IS THE WORST GAME EVER MADE. IT SUCKS. AND YOU SUCK FOR ENJOYING IT" is always such a hard task, especially when people go into these games expecting something other than what the game offers. Seeing the positive responses from people saying how much they love the games (despite the games's reputations among fans and games journos) is why I do what I do. Thanks for watching! I'd love to chat games sometime, I'm always looking for new stuff to try

Absolute banger video! So much love was put into this one and if I could define you in a single video it would be this one. Knocked it out of the park, outstanding work!
yeah, for a racing game, 5 stages is abysmal. But these aren't your standard racing game stages. There's far more branching paths, shortcuts, and mission objectives; played like a racing game. They definitely could have copy pasted some generic figure 8 tracks, generic loop/circuit tracks, and just haphazardly thrown collectibles in to bulk up the course count (like what super circuit was literally known for)--but the clear difference is that there's a reason not every course in Mario kart is Yoshi Valley. Yoshi Valley has loads of branching paths (even if it's still a single objective structure: win) It's a conceptually a very different type of game with a very different type of stage that adds significantly more content than a linear racing game; even if at first glance it's just 5 stages.
@@mrtrollnator123 oh yeah definitely. more would be awesome. I'm just saying it's understandable why the content amount is how it is, especially when the whole thing was built in 8 months by a licensed studio. In this case, the lack of content is only a perceived lack of content, rather than an actual lack of content itself. The game just doesn't explain this, which is why it's easy to say "lol only 5 stages look at Mario kart where they have 3456773216 stages" which is realistically the same thing as bashing smash bros for having less characters than Lego Star Wars when the depth of control variety is very different between the games
ALWAYS a banger, ALWAYS gets me loving a new Sonic game, and with an joke density to runtime ratio that speaks to a deep understanding of the viewer's need to go fast.
Haha thank you so much! My goal is get people to stop HATING a game, so getting people interested is a huge plus! Just like I find something new every day in Sonic R, I want people to see something new every time they watch my videos!
This video convinced me to finally give Sonic R a fair shot after growing up watching those "Sonic R is the worst game EVER" videos all those years ago and now I'm mad that the game was received so poorly. It's literally a repeat of what happened with Sonic the Fighters where most of the people who said it was bad were generally people who didn't play fighting games whatsoever. Learning the mechanics while unlocking all the characters in Sonic R was a genuinely fun experience and now I'm stuck wishing that the game received a proper sequel.
this happens to all the best games! It's part of why I made this channel! People hate these games just because somebody else said it's bad, and now we're stuck with so many dead ends in the franchise just because people have no patience or taste or context or willingness to let sonic team try the mechanics again, differently. Sonic Battle (GBA) still breaks my heart 💔
@@SolidSneakers it's in the pipeline. I've got a couple others to get through first as I wanna cover the GBA games before I get to Battle and Pinball Party because it's a crime how many people overlook the system.
This game is probably my favorite Sonic spinoff for how wildly creative and unique it is. The hate this game gets is certainly out of proportion, and I'd say it's a combination of people not understanding early 3D games and never giving Sonic the benefit of the doubt.
I am definitely a big spinoff defender for every franchise, even spinoffs I don't like. I hate Mario Golf but I will defend the thing's right to exist to hell and back 🤣 it's honestly amazing how great a lot of games can be if you actually play them for what they are instead of criticize them for what they aren't.
Nice video dude! Its nice to see someone say good things about this game but holy crap you have a LOT of ways to play that game lmao. Also you think Sega will ever revisit this Idea (or bring back riders)? and lastly nice fursona, you're legally obligated to use it now.
I literally commissioned it JUST for this bit. She turned out so good. I'm going to put her everywhere tbh. I'm definitely not a furry though. You can check my tabs in every video that shows my browser. 😅 This isn't even scratching the surface on the ways to play Sonic R, I havent even touched on "Drown Knuckles%" It's a shame I really don't think SEGA is going to touch Sonic R outside of silly references though. The concept scared too many people away.
Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) is what you get when you ducttape outrun to groundog day. You have all the time in the world to go anywhere you want over and over and over again. It's one of very few sonic games explicitly built around exploration, to the point you can explore any number of over 300 CANON timelines. You also get access to a ridiculous move pool filled with some of the best mechanics from the Adventure+Heroes series of games. If you hate labyrinthian level design, high skill ceilings, up-for-interpretation & open ended narrative structures, memorization, experimentation, and repetition; the game's definitely not for you, and you should play critically acclaimed The Last of Us instead.
I don't know who suffered more in this video, Amy, or the Dog Plushie.... 😂 In all realness tho, this video rocks and let me see SonicR in a whole new light!! I had a PC port of this game as a kid so I played for hours and hours, exploring every inch of every level... I never was good enough to unlock the other characters tho, I didn't even know how haha. Thanks for this video, very eye opening! (PS, I saw that Team Alice joke and I approve.)
Using the triggers helped a lot and the main rule is to *not* use up to walk but use the acceleration button like an actual racing game, it's much more convenient. And a patch, it is great for QoL improvements and to make the game's lighting visually like the Saturn version (which was more colorful).
Haha if only you could see the script for my next Sonic R video (working on a tips/guide video to go along with this one, kinda like how I did for Sonic Labyrinth.) The first line is literally "STOP PRESSING UP" 🤣 I play on Gems and Saturn mostly. But the modders are doing gods work 😤
I've always loved this game, and never thought it deserved the amount of hate it got. While it's far from my favorite sonic game, and I do wish it had more stages, I really enjoyed my time with this game, including the additional modes as well as playing multiplayer with my siblings... and instead of racing just messing around in the zones.
Yeah! More zones would have been awesome, but honestly considering the zones we got are basically three or four typical racetracks sandwiched on top of each other with all the different routes you can take I don't feel like we're *missing* anything 😂
I love sonic R, I do admit I have problems with it's controls sometimes But I do still deeply love it, I also think the tracks themselves are beautiful
yeah. the controls are definitely a huge barrier to entry for a lot of people. The unusual controls are genuinely my favorite part of the game, just how the unusual controls are the #1 hated part for a lot of people 😂
Given the short duration of Sonic R i found myself really having fun after i watching your 2 Sonic R videos explaining how the game is actually meant to be played. I never played Sonic R in my life, so when those videos poped-in (maybe due to algorithm things of youtube) my vision of the entire game changed. Then i said to myself "Know what? I liked Sonic 3D blast, lets try it" and i enjoyed it!. Really liked your videos man 💪💪 (And also confirming that the game journalists dont know how to play a game and dont want to understand it because "Its Sonic R lol bad game😂😂😂")
It's honestly amazing what playing a game with the right mindset and intentions can do! When you go in *expecting* a game to be trash, it'll be trash. I played this game knowing **nothing** and was able to learn and play on my own terms; I didn't know this game had such a bad reputation until YEARS later. 😂 I also love 3D Blast a lot, you might see it pretty soon even 😉
Yeah! So far my channel has been almost entirely Sonic-focused videos. I do enjoy a wide-variety of games (as indicated by the stuff I cram in my videos lol); but Sonic is definitely one of my favorites.
This gotta be the first video that really hits the nail on my years of thoughts about this game. Played it so much as a kid that I got used to the controls with the trigger drifting so I could do work of the game at 100% a few times, and years ago, inspired by the Tag 4 characters single player mode, I sometimes had got my cousins to play Tag with me in the game as well (through the balloon finding mode) since it was funnier and easier for them than to force them in a race with someone that had played too much Sonic R even back then. Nowadays it does come short and quite simple if you know what you are doing after having the muscle memory of EVERYBODY SUPER SONIC RACING, but honestly its interesting to think that a game like this *exists* at all, specially when you break down the ways it stands out *and* how can you make the best out of it. It might not be the first game I think of when I want to replay an old classic (been trying out old SEGA arcade racers again recently), even though I *did* do that months ago, but it sure does make me wonder about how much time you can willingly spend if you try to go for doing every single thing this game humanly allows you to do (unlocks, the balloon mode, the tag mode...even trying to beat the 5 tracks in first place with all of the characters if you are willing to put up with that many consecutive playthroughs and playing Amy more than once in your lifetime). Funny yet precisely edited video, and even more precise of a script to illustrate your point. And all in around 6 minutes...great work
It's honestly so easy to get decent at the game, especially when Sonic R provides the more comprehensive training tools than most games. Obviously it's a control scheme some people may not prefer, and that's fine, but people choose not to learn or even accent it's just not for them, and blame the game for their own tastes/ignorance. And yeah! By modern games standards, especially modern racing and platformers (and even modern platform racers!) it's definitely lacking in content. But when this game came out? it really was second to none in terms of true replayability when it came to variation in gameplay. Any game can offer you cheap reskins of the main control style with minimal stat changes, Sonic R really gave you a smash bros style roster of character differences with full 3D zones that really take advantage of the platforming and exploration aspects of the game. It's way more content than people realize because they just look at the numbers and see "10 characters < 20 characters" and "5 tracks < 40 tracks" There's genuinely so many *intended* ways to play the game, that by the time Sonic R starts adding in house rules and made-up minigames (drown knuckles%, supersonic vs 2 laps already done Amy, eggman/robo pingpong, etc) other games that do similar (dorfball in smash, hide & seek in various shooters, nuzlocks, etc) have been exhausted of content for some time. Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching!
it's incredible what *actually playing the game* (instead of just watching a couple angry UA-cam videos about it) does for your understanding of the controls, right? 😂
please do a video on sonic 06 especially the aspect of the story, it still holds a special place in my heart and you're the perfect person to go up against everyone hating on the game itself, it was broken but thats what made it fun
I swear people just hate having fun with games now. 😂 Everyone's so focused on "mechanics" and "canon" it makes every game feel like just an advertisement for whatever comes next where the gameplay is further refined and the story gets expanded on. This ain't marvel! 🤣
It's my all-time favorite game. I've been playing it since PC, got it on Gems, and recently (like three years ago) got a Saturn for the saturn version of the game. It's been nice to see so many other people also have a love for this game, despite the disgustingly overnegative reputation.
Funnily enough, I actually said both 25 and 26 in the video. I published this on the anniversary of the game, so the first part of the video I said 25, then at the end I said 26. Waiting if ANYONE would catch it and I could explain this. So. Thanks! 😂
Originally, yes, she was going to be a one-time gag to make fun of THOSE certain sonictubers. But the Scraps artwork turned out so good I plan on incorporating her into my streams and into future videos too.
its genuinely amazing how many "bad" games are actually pretty enjoyable when you spend more than an hour actually playing them instead of just looking for reasons to hate them.
That segment about mario kart is not just the reason why I defend this game but also ADORE sonic riders (both the OG and Zero Gravity) sonic racing's games used to have a habit out of demanding actual skill out of the player rather than relying on mostly just items. Just like a lot of Sonics older more classic mainline games (by classic I don't just mean the OGs I mean even stuff like SA1,2 heroes ect.) Sonic applying it's main skill based philosophy onto it's spinoff racing titles really helped bring the series together in a more tight knit and consistent fashion and ppl just misunderstood the hell out of it and now sonic has just started following the norm in terms of racing games. BUUUUUUT despite it all you can still see some of its more skill based gameplay in his most modern racing outing. Team sonic racing is surprisingly deep and very fun to master def when it comes to communicating with you team to win. It's as hectic as mario kart double dash with twice the depth and twice the reward of playing like a proper team...I'm so sad the game is dead but at least the TSR mode is still around on SRB2K so the idea will be around forever like it deserves to be, because they put a ton of heart and planning into the games mechanics which needs to be appreciated.
oh definitely. TSR is FANTASTIC. The Mechanics are absolutely on another level than a typical party racer, despite still being one in nature. And while the courses aren't particularly branching like Sonic R (or even certain Riders stages) I just didn't really feel like mentioning it here in this video about Sonic R because it might water down just how different Sonic R is as a Platform Racer. if this were a traditional video essay milking for watch time, I probably would have gone into it more haha. Always good to meet a fellow fan of alternative Sonics. Thanks for watching!
Nice! Have fun! There are quite a few differences between the Saturn and PC/Gems version. Mainly the physics/controls of every character, AI Difficulty, and how you can't get the tokens and emeralds in one go... but still its definitely my favorite of the bunch!
My only problem with Sonic R is that I've played so much of it, I'm now basically invincible. I love this game so, so much and wish the platform-racer format would make a return to the Sonic series.
Same here. That's why it's always fun to try with different characters, do hard mode, try getting things in a different order, or what I do sometimes; and stick a mirror on your wall and play everything flipped 🤣 Platform Racing *technically* has with scattered multiplayer modes (SA2:Battle, Lost World, Rush, etc) and certain "race against the computer" missions (Colors:U, Adventure, Frontiers, etc) but the only dedicated platform racers have been rivals (+2) for the PSP and a few mobile games. It is very missed, but when sonic fans dogpile these types of games, it makes sense why we haven't gotten them back.
Went to your channel after that last comment and this video IMMEDITIATELY took my attention. Lol Sonic R was fun back in the day, though. Not gonna lie. Unlocking characters was fun, too. - LB
@@LBnMie I'm a diehard tails fan. But I used to live by Sonic's double jump! Super Sonic may be cheating, but it definitely feels great to beat a cheater with your "bad" characters! 🤣
Unfortunately no, the R-Zone version of Sonic R was cancelled/never-released (thank goodness too because I would have never been able to afford it lol). These are standalone Tiger LCDs. They also released a number of others like Sonic 3 and NiGHTS.
@@zephyrurchin4763 they are astronomically difficult to find. I got one from someone that explores abandoned/condemned buildings and sells what they find, and the other came from one of those storage locker bidders. Neither of them really knew what they had, and werent asking for a lot because these things are so rare most people charge the same as one of the much more common Sonic LCDs, so I snatched them up ASAP; I got SUPER lucky. My prized Sonic R posessions. Honestly until I got my hands on them myself I was convinced they didn't even exist. I've found they're slightly more common in the UK than out here stateside, however they're still very rare and often expensive (a more recent ebay listing went for 389 pounds) and thats not even including shipping or what importing would be like. NOW IF ONLY I COULD GET MY HANDS ON THE SONIC R BURGER KING PAPER CUP--
every time I play this game I find out something new. Not even two dedicated Sonic R videos is enough to cover it all! It's my all time favorite game, and I'm really glad I got to play it when it came out
My first game was Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine (in the classics 3 pack) I was 2 years old and locked in a closet for a couple hours with a CRT and mean beans. if that doesn't explain who I am today, nothing will.
NIce Video! Sonic R was my first Sonic video game along with Sonic 3D Blast on PC after my father sold the Dreamcast with SA2 and Sonic Shuffle.(I was 7 years old at the time) Years passed and I bought another Dreamcast! SA2 is my favourite game ever yet when i first played R on PC i didn't feel that the game was worse or anything just different and fun. Nowadays i can't find the same feeling for modern games like Forces sadly. As a Sonic Collector myself I own the Japanese Saturn version(I highly recommend it because it has colorful manual and cool looking tray),the Japanese guide book(also highly recommend),the Soundtrack CD,the Working Out Vinyl and the Sonic Team PowerPlay compilation CD. Also the Ps2 version of Gems Collection. The game has a never ending charm and the music is top notch. My only problem with the game is that it's too short. You can 100% it under a hour while SA2 take me a weekend to unlock Green Hill.(The Gamecube version only because in the original Dreamcast version the Chao Garden stats are nowhere and you can only guess by entering races and see how well your chao might stand..still I prefer the Dreamcast version)
My first sonic game was mean bean machine 😂 if you ever see a sneaky Has-Bean (carbuncle) around, that's why! Awesome collection! I'm hoping to pick up a Sonic R JP copy soon! And have a PAL PS2 on the way. Honestly I don't think I've ever felt Sonic R was too short, even after I got to the point I can easily clear it in 20 minutes or so. Because playing to 100% as a different character immediately feels like it's a different game. Some games I feel like I exhaust all the content in a few plays, Sonic R I'm still finding new stuff every time I play. Just yesterday even I was goofing around with tails doll and found some cool levitation tricks. It's the game that keeps giving. Gives me a feeling kinda like Majora's Mask in terms of variation in each playthrough.
sonic r did do some good but the controls have aged so much people are not going to give it a fair chance, i do like how everyone has their own abilities and theres no cars they're just racing on foot. but i grew up playing a bunch of sonic riders so going back to play r i can't really appreciate what it tried to because i was spoiled with riders and sega racing
It depends what you classify as "aged"; the mechanics definitely aren't **approachable** but if the metric for aging "good" is that any random yahoo could pick up a controller and beat the game, other incredible games games also don't meet the mark. You need to play through an entire sub-mode of Crazy Taxi just to learn how to maneuver the vehicle. Tomb Raider gets re-released what feels like every year despite how clunky it feels at first. Street Fighter 2 Turbo was absolutely a horrible game to just jump into without context and no idea what the combo system is. This isn't even counting all the longstanding "greatest game of all time" JRPGS that have convoluted mechanics that are only learned by playing the game, possibly for hours and hours on end. Super Mario World is ridiculously approachable, you could give the controler to a six year old with no tutorial, no help, no guide, and if they wanted to, they could probably beat the thing, or at the very least some of the easier levels. But this specific quality doesn't inherently mean Super Mario World will always be a better game than anything else that has even slightest HINT of a skill-floor--all it means is that to YOU, as your priority is approachability, you will favor approachable games. Some games are loved and remembered fondly BECAUSE they're unapproachable. BECAUSE they're unnecessarily difficult, or complex. Daytona has some of the most incredible drifting mechanics of any game, and yet they're some of the most complicated and difficult to master. You mentioned Sonic Riders (an awesome game btw) which is a perfect example of this; especially when you start playing the game for real and trying to take shortcuts, or play competitively. This is why Riders, despite being incredible, also has its detractors and people insisting the game "didn't age well" when compared to the likes of other games Sonic Riders wasn't trying to be.
@@Hard_Pretzel almost every review of sonic r fall into two categories 1. the controls suck or are unresponsive/ sluggish 2. controls are tough at first but once you learn them it makes for a fun game. this tells me most people aren't willing to learn the game because of the "tank" controls, especially when they have a preconceived notion that the game sucks anyway why try and learn it. yes you are correct people play favorites when it comes to controls and which games are accessible
@@Mostillist Sonic R, among other games, are just low hanging fruit that anybody could absolutely rip into. Not liking a game is one thing (everyones got tastes and preferences), but insisting anything "objectively" bad, especially when these people dont even play the game to begin with, is something else entirely; and I wish at the very least people would learn how to play the games before whining about them.
Wait, is sonic R hated? I never actually knew that i tought it was beloved by all, i actually liked the game a bit, but games like sonic R, mario kart, racing games and stuff aren't my cup of tea, but i still can see the quality behind sonic R And seeing the video and other ones, the points that sonic R haters use are completely stupid and i like how you tried to show the people how good the game can be by giving your vision of it, great work :)
@@Esteban_Bolert so many sonic games make easy targets. People find any reason they can to rip into anything that isn't a widely recognized """""good""""" game. It's why we ended up with this weird pillar of people that insist Adventure, Generations, some of the classic games, and maybe mania are the only titles worth playing in a franchise with so many other entries. Sonic R wasnt always exaggerated to be this bad, but when the internet (and especially UA-cam) became more commonplace; it, along with many other games, were the low-hanging-fruit easy-bake content to make fun of just because it's "different."
I had the expert software PC release of Sonic r. I didn't get to experience the Sonic adventure games until at least essay to battle came out. I really enjoyed my time with Sonic are, I might need to find a way to Play it again
I also experienced the game before Adventure, and I had plenty of time to play it and learn it as well. A lot of the distaste for this game comes from people that played Adventure first. Luckily there are a few ways to play it now. Gems Collection is the most common. The PC Version also can work if you know your way around mods. You can 🏴☠🦜 it too pretty well, even if it's not ideal.
You are so right with regards to the problem of Sonic R generally being played after future games. When I got Sonic R on release for Saturn it felt magical. I always remember it felt very hard at the beginning but in those days the idea of 'these tank controls suck' wasn't a thing. You just played it a bit and got better until you figured things out, just like any other game. I might feel like an old man saying 'in my day' but sometimes I do feel that today we focus on the wrong criticisms in older games. Lets be honest, the Saturn didn't do so well. There are a lot of second hand experiences with the console, however talking to almost all people who experienced the games, or GC/PC iterations of the games at the time, I only hear tales of enjoyment. Great video
enjoying a game is way more important than a bunch of weirdos on the internet NOT enjoying it. "In my day" we didn't have a choice BUT to play the games we had, for better or worse. Including heavy hitters, and whatever we got out of the bargain bin. Things are obviously different now, especially when I have a steam library of more unplayed games than games that even released for the 32X 😂
lmao I never thought Sonic R was bad, I just thought I was bad at racing games. Which might still be true, but now that I know that Time Attack is actually a practice mode I might give it another shot!
there's so many types of racing games out there! So many different mechanics to explore and try out! Even if you don't stick with Sonic R, I'm sure there is a racing game that will click for you eventually! Feeling like you suck at racing games is definitely in part due to how Mario Kart has RUINED people's perception of the genre by limiting it strictly to kart-based party racers as "fun" racing games, and things like GT and Forza for "serious" racing games. It's watering down the genre so much to make anyone think they suck at racing games! 😂 In addition to Sonic R of course, if you haven't tried them yet, I'd definitely also recommend stuff like Outrun, Micro Machines, Biker Mice From Mars, Speedrunners, Distance, LEGO Racers, and Daytona. Feel free to let me know what other racing games you've tried out or plan on trying out!
@@SteffyCush I'm glad! I was inspired by old flash cartoons (specifically the "with commentary" versions that you were meant to pause to read anything that interested you) and I genuinely miss this style of content.
@@kiki88561 it's not! I actually was playing it a bit earlier today even! Been at it for almost 30 years and I'm still not out of stuff to do! Obviously if you're looking for a one shot campaign wherein that one shot you spend 90+ hours; this is not a game for you. But Sonic R by no means is lacking content when even just ONE zone in Sonic R has more depth and variety and routes and shortcuts and collectibles than an entire grand prix in other racing games. Giving you access to characters that can't even jump changes the game astronomically. I know hardly anyone actually realizes this though, and just sees things by numbers "5 stages? 10 characters? BOO!! WORST GAME OF ALL TIME" or something to that effect without taking into account the actual content you're getting.
IVE BEEN SAYING THIS SHIT FOR YEARS THANK YOU!!!!!!! I fucking love Sonic R’s physics and I really wish there were other games like it. Seems like nothing before or since has managed to replicate its aesthetic.
it's definitely a very unique control scheme! there's never been another game to take tank controls into a proper racing game, with the ability to jump, and drift, and slide. people are too afraid of a good time 😭
Spitting facts!! I've always defended that game, I think people just don't give the proper time to learn how to play the game, don't use things like Drifting most of the times For some reason, this game is and always was a 50/50 for the fandom, some hate it, some love it, me personally, I love it with my heart and soul But the same thing goes to the Riders Series, the OG Riders recieved some bad reviews at launch probably because people didn't expended that much time learning the game, since the controls and gimmicks are a bit complex and hard to understand, and even Drift and Drift 2, they are cool side games for what they are, but most people don't like or don't care about them I think the only Sonic Racing series people do not hate is the All-Stars series (All-Stars Racing, Transformed and TSR too), not only is the best selling, especially thanks to Transformed, but it's the easier of the bunch and play like any other regular mascot racing games I love all those Sonic Racing games series, it's sad that the ones that are harder to learn are the one people dislike the most
honestly it goes the same for most sonic games in general! Everything that isn't immediately approachable and 6-year-old friendly gets absolutely destroyed by the fans! The only real exceptions are when people pretend Generations and Adventure are these high end pro-only skill floor games; as if six year olds weren't beating these games just like they were beating forces and the olympics that fans say are "too easy". 🤣
anybody's allowed to hate any game, as long as they hate it for the game itself, instead of hating it for what it's not, or what people told them it should be.
Also any reason why you seem to prefer Sonic & Knuckles divorced from Sonic 3? As a fellow "bad Sonic games" apologist I'd be curious to see your Sonic games ranking lol
@@sitarkid8892 I wouldn't necessarily say I prefer it in ALL regards, as Sonic 3 has the most unique multiplayer of any sonic game. I love the competition mode, a LOT. But I definitely do have a bit of an attachment to Sonic & Knuckles just because I played it every time the Barrel of Doom frustrated me too much, haha. I also really like the brighter-colored levels and that because it doesn't save, it feels more like a one-shot experience instead of something I gotta ride the save for. My Sonic game ranking would... uhhh... definitely piss people off 😂 So I havent been super direct about it. A lot of games I'm not really a huge fan of are the games that are definitely well loved by the community so if I speak, I'm gonna lose a limb. But my absolute favorites are Sonic R (of course), Tails Sky Patrol, and probably Sonic Lost World.

You're telling me! Every year on my birthday I celebrate by getting my friends together and we all just play. We race, we marathon, we lab, we make up games, run bingo, it's a lot of fun.
I share the same opinion as you. Sonic R is perhaps poorly explained and it must be admitted that it is too short, for me if it had twice as many circuits it would have been less objectionable but it is pleasant to master and original game. And Metal Knuckles ! 🤩 Very good video man 👍
oh for sure! but honestly I kinda prefer games that don't throw an hour of unskippable tutorials at you or have a colorful character tell you "PRESS A TO JUMP" "USE THE CONTROL STICK TO MOVE" etc; for me, figuring things out myself is half the fun! I also really prefer short games over long ones. I grew up in an era of non-saving games and arcade ports. So replayability is so much more important to me than a super lengthy experience I just don't have time for anymore. Great video! I think Sonic R's zone design is in general very underappreciated and is actually way more friendly than people give it credit for. I've never known that each character has a unique way of interacting with the terrain, but Tails Doll is my favorite because of being able to move normally on water regardless of weather settings and just being pretty fun to move around as. I've almost beaten Super Sonic in Radiant Emerald as him in the PC version on hard, but he managed to outrun me anyway through shortcuts. I've actually heard that Super Sonic can't use some shortcuts in Gems Collection's version, which makes beating him easier, is that true?
Outside of giving you a long&boring&tedious step-by-step hand-holdey yellow-tape tutorial; Sonic R provides you every tool you need to learn how to play--so long as you're willing to give more than five minutes to practicing 😂 Funnily enough, the AI uses MORE shortcuts in the Gems version, however in Gems the AI also is way more balanced. The Saturn Version gave the AI ridiculous speeds, and the rubberbanding is DEADLY. Making the Saturn version the REAL version for hard-core players (especially because in the Saturn version you can't leave a stage with emeralds and tokens at the same time--tokens take priority) I've done hard mode tails doll (and every character) saturn before, but it definitely took several attempts. I have a proper tips&guide video in the works, but Tails Doll Radiant Emerald Super Sonic is a very very advanced strat that uses basically everything you can learn about the game: Rings give you a passive speed boost, and Radiant Emerald has three points to spend 50 rings (shortcut, shortcut, accelerator) so when you spend them on a shortcut, you lose 50 rings each door, and up to 50 rings on the accelerator; meaning you lost 150 rings all at once. Which is no good. You can use this to your advantage, because Super Sonic WILL open the shortcuts. So now Super Sonic lost 50 on the "Boomerang" path shortcut at the end of lap 2, and crossing into lap 3 will open the shortcut with the accelerator in it. AI characters arent very good at collecting rings, so opening both doors costs Super Sonic 100 rings--and he rarely has more than that. So activating the Accelerator gives him a smaller boost and takes him to a flat zero. Nows your chance. You didn't spend any rings. You still have anywhere from 200-300 rings for your passive speed boost. AND you get to take the shortcuts Super Sonic JUST OPENED, including the accelerator. Spend 50 on the accelerator for the full boost, you still have around 200 rings. This usually lets you pass Super Sonic. Temporarily. Now you need to basically 'booty-bounce' Super Sonic every time he comes close. An easy way to do this is with the camera button--zoom out so you can see him approaching from behind, and get in front of him. This way he will bounce into you from behind--speeding you up, and slowing him down. It also helps, of course, to throw yourself into a drift around the corners, get really good at ring collecting, and getting early-race bumps as well. It's definitely a challenge. It's possible. But it will definitely eat up quite some time because beating Super Sonic is basically a test of game knowledge. Good luck!
@@Hard_Pretzel Interesting, I've never known the specifics of differences in how the AI behave between versions. That sounds fun, it's interesting how the camera can be used as an advantage which I haven't considered before.
@@marx4538 it's definitely also largely up to luck and hoping the AI gets biffed somehow. Funnily enough, AI Egg Robo is your best weapon here because they can sometimes blast a CPU off the rails just right that you have a shot. I've only been able to Hard Mode Radiant Emerald Super Sonic ONCE. And it was years ago. And somehow he skipped the opening the Accelerator Shortcut on the third lap. Wish I recorded it. Gems version makes the game super easy by comparison. The Hard mode in Gems is comparable to the normal mode on Saturn.
@@jarrellfamily1422 They're definitely very rare compared to most platformers. Typically reserved for multiplayer modes (things like Adventure 2:Battle's competition mode) but I'd definitely recommend looking into them!
bold claim assuming I have friends that want to play Sonic R with me 😂😂😂 but yeah, I do love the multiplayer modes a lot! I just didn't mention them a lot bc I wanted to avoid some wiseguy's "game only being good for it's multiplayer" schtick
I LOVE SONIC R. and I did not do those things like: balloons, time attack. And yes, I did play sa1 months before sonic R, and I still think it is 8/10 game. The problem with people gasping about this game is that they insult the game instead of getting better at it, heck even insulting yourself for being bad at it is better then insulting the product. This is the problem with many people or even IGN when it comes to sonic games and I am sick of it. They don't try to find the right way to play the game, they just except that sticking with one playstyle is okey. Since all sonic games are different, you need to make your own strategies to play it better and easier, like for example: - IN SONIC CD: Have you ever tried exploring for hours for something speed breaking like springs and gravity bumping (like in wacky workbench) instead of trying to stop yourself to collect time stones at the end? - In Shadow The Hedgehog: Have you ever tried using only fast lock-on guns instead of collecting useless weapons and useless guns? The game gives you the freedom to choose which guns you want, there will always be something useless. Have you ever tried using homing attack ONLY when you don't have a lock-on gun? Have you ever tried using spindash for some skips? there are plenty of rooms where spindash is objectively better then running, you just have to try finding them with your creativity. Have you ever tried using gauges immortality and special powers on the right places? you have to balance time and situation to get the best solution, this is the reason why people can't get over Leathal Highway hero mission, they don't know that they can use immortality for better ranks in bossfights and for much faster destroying of mission vehicles without using shadow riffle like a baby. Have you ever tried using vacumm guns? It is very handy in black comet and final haunt. Have you ever tried focusing on speed in neutral stages? enemies don't give you points in those neutral missions Why do you stop moving just to shoot things? you can only be best by never stoping unless there is no way to continue, which in those moments you should use spindash always. - Sonic R: Can't see the shortcuts on the map? the bots will be slow even super sonic won't catch up with you, especially in the radical city. Can't play the game more times? Can't bump to the walls with no lose of speed rather then bumping to the walls for slowing down? Can't make less then 3 mistakes in a single run of one zone? Never heard of rings? they are necessary for your speed which leads to your victory. Even If the games are unpolished, you have to cope to enjoy them and get better them. The only thing you can't get better at is an actual randomness (in better description: bug), which only sonic 06 contains (don't believe me? shadow the hedgehogs randomness capsules are always going in the same row, with a good timing you can get invincibility always like for example in Lethal Highway). The randomness of other sonic games (or most of games in general) are just you not coping, which in the end leads to skill issue.
for as much as people complain about tutorials/omochao/hand-holding/yellow-tape; they sure complain about sonic when there arent tutorials, omochao, hand-holding, or yellow tape. EVERY sonic game has very clear and obvious ways to "get good" or even have FUN that anyone that actually bothered playing the games more than a couple hours could find out. The problem is we have people that give up after 15 minutes or return the game before they really look into how to actually have fun with it. Forces is far from my favorite Sonic game (because Sonic R is, duh) but anyone who buys an entire game but can't get their moneys worth out of it??? THATS THE REAL SKILL ISSUE 🤣🤣
haha yeah. Hence the polygon logos layered over Sonics chest. and don't worry, I don't mind at all when people point out the gags. I have a lot of them in every video, and not everyone will catch all of them, so pointing out what sticks out to you can even help someone else catch what they missed. thanks for watching!
what do you mean??? actually playing the game the right way is more fun than deliberately going out of your way to ignore key mechanics????? Impossible!! 😂
If you play on emulator, a good way to insentivise getting the most out of this game is trying to complete the RetroAchievements set, it really made me actually appreciate and get better at this game, especially as it forces you to play as the shit characters.

My only complaint with Sonic R is that I wish it had more zones.

😂 Not necessarily defending it, but I definitely had a fun time with it
obviously not every game is for every person, and everyone looks for different things in a game before they call it "good" For example, I ONLY like short games that are super replayable.
I see the famous Forza Horizon 5 livery made an appearance. I approve.
I WAS **BANNED** FOR TWO WEEKS BECAUSE OF THAT LIVERY AND I'LL BE **DAMNED** IF I DON'T GET CONTENT OUT OF IT. 🤣🤣
People who don't like Sonic R have a thing we in the business call a "skill issue"
Sonic R gang rise up
its crazy how 10 minutes of practice already has you pretty solid at the game.
Have fun! thanks for watching!
finally a place where people find and talk about the good in sonic games that most people say are bad

Absolute banger video! So much love was put into this one and if I could define you in a single video it would be this one. Knocked it out of the park, outstanding work!
That was the goal. YOU know Sonic R is my favorite game of all time! 😂
@@Hard_Pretzel Hell yeah! Sonic R is a masterpiece, people just didn't see the vision until now.
Ngl they needed to add more stages 5 stages for a 1997 racing game is insane
yeah, for a racing game, 5 stages is abysmal.
Yoshi Valley has loads of branching paths (even if it's still a single objective structure: win)
It's a conceptually a very different type of game with a very different type of stage that adds significantly more content than a linear racing game; even if at first glance it's just 5 stages.
@@Hard_Pretzel u have good points but personally I just wish there were more
@@mrtrollnator123 oh yeah definitely. more would be awesome.
@@Hard_Pretzel Speaking of when are we getting that Sonic Battle review? Need to convince more people to give that game a second chance.
I hate Mario Golf but I will defend the thing's right to exist to hell and back 🤣
it's honestly amazing how great a lot of games can be if you actually play them for what they are instead of criticize them for what they aren't.
This isn't even scratching the surface on the ways to play Sonic R, I havent even touched on "Drown Knuckles%" It's a shame I really don't think SEGA is going to touch Sonic R outside of silly references though. The concept scared too many people away.
"Consoles is the different" is my favorite gag from this one.
Now tell me why Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) is peak.
In all realness tho, this video rocks and let me see SonicR in a whole new light!! I had a PC port of this game as a kid so I played for hours and hours, exploring every inch of every level... I never was good enough to unlock the other characters tho, I didn't even know how haha. Thanks for this video, very eye opening! (PS, I saw that Team Alice joke and I approve.)
I am so glad SOMEONE sees the vision! 🤣
Glad you enjoyed the video! If you ever want any pointers, you know where to find me haha
Sonic R is fucking goated as a time attack challenge racer
There's so many cool time attack modes too! it's a shame people never really checked them out!
Using the triggers helped a lot and the main rule is to *not* use up to walk but use the acceleration button like an actual racing game, it's much more convenient.
And a patch, it is great for QoL improvements and to make the game's lighting visually like the Saturn version (which was more colorful).
Haha if only you could see the script for my next Sonic R video (working on a tips/guide video to go along with this one, kinda like how I did for Sonic Labyrinth.)
The first line is literally "STOP PRESSING UP" 🤣
I play on Gems and Saturn mostly.
I love sonic R, I do admit I have problems with it's controls sometimes
But I do still deeply love it, I also think the tracks themselves are beautiful
yeah. the controls are definitely a huge barrier to entry for a lot of people. The unusual controls are genuinely my favorite part of the game, just how the unusual controls are the #1 hated part for a lot of people 😂
Man this channel is great, some of the best well thought out sonic videos I’ve seen in a while
Thank you so much! I'm really glad I can provide something different.
Really liked your videos man 💪💪
(And also confirming that the game journalists dont know how to play a game and dont want to understand it because "Its Sonic R lol bad game😂😂😂")
It's honestly amazing what playing a game with the right mindset and intentions can do! When you go in *expecting* a game to be trash, it'll be trash. I played this game knowing **nothing** and was able to learn and play on my own terms; I didn't know this game had such a bad reputation until YEARS later. 😂
I also love 3D Blast a lot, you might see it pretty soon even 😉
basically saying "the game doesn't suck, instead you suck at the game"
moreso "you're playing it wrong", which does include sucking, but also people trying to play the game like something it isn't
Oh you're a new face! Talking about sonic is something you do often?
I've never played Sonic R but i do listen to its soundtrack. Very catchy.

It's way more content than people realize because they just look at the numbers and see "10 characters < 20 characters" and "5 tracks < 40 tracks"
There's genuinely so many *intended* ways to play the game, that by the time Sonic R starts adding in house rules and made-up minigames (drown knuckles%, supersonic vs 2 laps already done Amy, eggman/robo pingpong, etc) other games that do similar (dorfball in smash, hide & seek in various shooters, nuzlocks, etc) have been exhausted of content for some time.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching!

Iggy's Reckin Balls ate up SO MUCH of my time. Such a fun little game. I miss it.
Sonic R is criminally underrated, and mainly for the bad reasons. I first played this game and picked up the controls almost immediately.

I swear people just hate having fun with games now. 😂 Everyone's so focused on "mechanics" and "canon" it makes every game feel like just an advertisement for whatever comes next where the gameplay is further refined and the story gets expanded on. This ain't marvel! 🤣
This is how I feel about sonic 06
It's how I feel about every game really. I feel like ANYONE could enjoy ANY game as long as they're interested and motivated enough to find some fun.
thank you for the sonic r love
I have enjoyed...AND LOVED IT since gems colkection
It's my all-time favorite game. I've been playing it since PC, got it on Gems, and recently (like three years ago) got a Saturn for the saturn version of the game. It's been nice to see so many other people also have a love for this game, despite the disgustingly overnegative reputation.
1997 you mean, 26 years
Funnily enough, I actually said both 25 and 26 in the video. I published this on the anniversary of the game, so the first part of the video I said 25, then at the end I said 26. Waiting if ANYONE would catch it and I could explain this.
So. Thanks! 😂
Legit speaking, I'd like to see more of your bunny fursona in future vids. It's not a one-time wonder, is it?
Originally, yes, she was going to be a one-time gag to make fun of THOSE certain sonictubers. But the Scraps artwork turned out so good I plan on incorporating her into my streams and into future videos too.
Sonic R was awesome.
yes, yes it was.
I never see why people ever hated on Sonic R other than just they're a little piss baby who can't get used to controls wawawa
its genuinely amazing how many "bad" games are actually pretty enjoyable when you spend more than an hour actually playing them instead of just looking for reasons to hate them.

Same here. That's why it's always fun to try with different characters, do hard mode, try getting things in a different order, or what I do sometimes; and stick a mirror on your wall and play everything flipped 🤣
Platform Racing *technically* has with scattered multiplayer modes (SA2:Battle, Lost World, Rush, etc) and certain "race against the computer" missions (Colors:U, Adventure, Frontiers, etc) but the only dedicated platform racers have been rivals (+2) for the PSP and a few mobile games. It is very missed, but when sonic fans dogpile these types of games, it makes sense why we haven't gotten them back.

It depends what you classify as "aged";
the mechanics definitely aren't **approachable** but if the metric for aging "good" is that any random yahoo could pick up a controller and beat the game, other incredible games games also don't meet the mark.
@@Hard_Pretzel almost every review of sonic r fall into two categories
1. the controls suck or are unresponsive/ sluggish
2. controls are tough at first but once you learn them it makes for a fun game.
this tells me most people aren't willing to learn the game because of the "tank" controls, especially when they have a preconceived notion that the game sucks anyway why try and learn it.
yes you are correct people play favorites when it comes to controls and which games are accessible
I never actually knew that i tought it was beloved by all, i actually liked the game a bit, but games like sonic R, mario kart, racing games and stuff aren't my cup of tea, but i still can see the quality behind sonic R
And seeing the video and other ones, the points that sonic R haters use are completely stupid and i like how you tried to show the people how good the game can be by giving your vision of it, great work :)

In addition to Sonic R of course, if you haven't tried them yet, I'd definitely also recommend stuff like Outrun, Micro Machines, Biker Mice From Mars, Speedrunners, Distance, LEGO Racers, and Daytona. Feel free to let me know what other racing games you've tried out or plan on trying out!

@@Hard_Pretzel the labyrinth vid you did a while back def has some editing beats that are inspo for me :)
@@SteffyCush I'm glad! I was inspired by old flash cartoons (specifically the "with commentary" versions that you were meant to pause to read anything that interested you) and I genuinely miss this style of content.
Sonic R is a guilty pleasure of mine as well... but the lack of content REALLY drags the game down.
Please tell me the 6:18 part is a joke.
@@Hard_Pretzel Wow, definitely wasn't expecting that!
I've always defended that game, I think people just don't give the proper time to learn how to play the game, don't use things like Drifting most of the times
For some reason, this game is and always was a 50/50 for the fandom, some hate it, some love it, me personally, I love it with my heart and soul
But the same thing goes to the Riders Series, the OG Riders recieved some bad reviews at launch probably because people didn't expended that much time learning the game, since the controls and gimmicks are a bit complex and hard to understand, and even Drift and Drift 2, they are cool side games for what they are, but most people don't like or don't care about them
I think the only Sonic Racing series people do not hate is the All-Stars series (All-Stars Racing, Transformed and TSR too), not only is the best selling, especially thanks to Transformed, but it's the easier of the bunch and play like any other regular mascot racing games
I love all those Sonic Racing games series, it's sad that the ones that are harder to learn are the one people dislike the most
honestly it goes the same for most sonic games in general!
Fine, I will shut up
anybody's allowed to hate any game,
as long as they hate it for the game itself, instead of hating it for what it's not, or what people told them it should be.
Sonic R grows on you!
But my absolute favorites are Sonic R (of course), Tails Sky Patrol, and probably Sonic Lost World.

one of my favorites was a short callout to a random gas station in Nebraska that you'd only know if you'd been there. It was in my labyrinth video.
Sonic R is the greatest game ever made.
It is so much fun, especially with other people.
Very good video man 👍
oh for sure! but honestly I kinda prefer games that don't throw an hour of unskippable tutorials at you or have a colorful character tell you "PRESS A TO JUMP" "USE THE CONTROL STICK TO MOVE" etc; for me, figuring things out myself is half the fun!
I also really prefer short games over long ones. I grew up in an era of non-saving games and arcade ports. So replayability is so much more important to me than a super lengthy experience I just don't have time for anymore.
So the same reasons I love the game, are exactly why people hate it 🤣 which is why to me it's the greatest game of all time because it has everything I want.
thanks for watching! metal knuckles is amazing
@@Hard_Pretzel I understand too, I don't like heavy tutorials but I was saying that for normal people, you know all those people not like us who like Sonic Generation instead of liking Sonic R ! xD Honestly i prefer R than Generation, yes ^^
@@utagawashi1656 good thing we're a few comments deep and nobody is going to see this;
Sonic Generations is genuinely my least favorite sonic game. It's part of why I started UA-cam and why all my videos are on "questionable" games--because I personally had more fun in these games than I did in generations.
you're in good company lol
@@Hard_Pretzel Yes where no one can see in the sect of Sonic R 😂
For me even if Sonic Generation is a good game it is an empty shell I prefer for example Sonic 06 which is bad in many aspects but so much deeper in all these aspects. Sonic Generation is just Fan service and no more. I like that you defend these unloved games.
They are interesting for everything weird and unexpected they do 😊
@@utagawashi1656 I love seeing people rip on literally any other sonic game for things like "bad story" "nostalgia" "reused assets" "fan service" "one-note characters" "easy/linear gameplay" -- THEN TURN RIGHT AROUND AND SAY SONIC GENERATIONS IS THE ONLY GOOD SONIC GAME IN 20 YEARS. 🤣🤣🤣
The absolute irony being able to "just let the issues slide because i still had fun" while at the same time refusing to do the same for any other game and find out just how enjoyable so many games actually are.
Outside of giving you a long&boring&tedious step-by-step hand-holdey yellow-tape tutorial; Sonic R provides you every tool you need to learn how to play--so long as you're willing to give more than five minutes to practicing 😂
Funnily enough, the AI uses MORE shortcuts in the Gems version, however in Gems the AI also is way more balanced. The Saturn Version gave the AI ridiculous speeds, and the rubberbanding is DEADLY. Making the Saturn version the REAL version for hard-core players (especially because in the Saturn version you can't leave a stage with emeralds and tokens at the same time--tokens take priority)
I've done hard mode tails doll (and every character) saturn before, but it definitely took several attempts. I have a proper tips&guide video in the works, but Tails Doll Radiant Emerald Super Sonic is a very very advanced strat that uses basically everything you can learn about the game:
Rings give you a passive speed boost, and Radiant Emerald has three points to spend 50 rings (shortcut, shortcut, accelerator) so when you spend them on a shortcut, you lose 50 rings each door, and up to 50 rings on the accelerator; meaning you lost 150 rings all at once.
You should play rayman arena it's another platform racer looks pretty good

I LOVE SONIC R.
and I did not do those things like: balloons, time attack.
And yes, I did play sa1 months before sonic R, and I still think it is 8/10 game.
The problem with people gasping about this game is that they insult the game instead of getting better at it,
heck even insulting yourself for being bad at it is better then insulting the product.
This is the problem with many people or even IGN when it comes to sonic games and I am sick of it.
They don't try to find the right way to play the game, they just except that sticking with one playstyle is okey.
Since all sonic games are different, you need to make your own strategies to play it better and easier, like for example:
- IN SONIC CD:
Have you ever tried exploring for hours for something speed breaking like springs and gravity bumping (like in wacky workbench)
instead of trying to stop yourself to collect time stones at the end?
- In Shadow The Hedgehog:
Have you ever tried using only fast lock-on guns instead of collecting useless weapons and useless guns?
Have you ever tried focusing on speed in neutral stages? enemies don't give you points in those neutral missions
Why do you stop moving just to shoot things? you can only be best by never stoping unless there is no way to continue, which in those moments you should use spindash always.
- Sonic R:
Can't see the shortcuts on the map? the bots will be slow even super sonic won't catch up with you, especially in the radical city.
I hope this doesn't annoy anyone, but is 0:45 a reference to Knuckles calling Rouge's tits one polygon in Snapcube fandub?
haha yeah. Hence the polygon logos layered over Sonics chest.
and don't worry, I don't mind at all when people point out the gags. I have a lot of them in every video, and not everyone will catch all of them, so pointing out what sticks out to you can even help someone else catch what they missed.
