- Learn how to bend tubing with the JD Squared Model 3 Tube Bender and how to fish mouth tubing with the JD2 Notchmaster. This is a general overview of getting started. Typically a tube bender is bolted to the floor but since I need to make mine mobile I'm using the Swag Off Road ram mount to adapt an air/hydraulic ram to my tube bender. This allows me to use an air compressor to effortlessly bend tube to any degree. After bending I show how to fish mouth and tube notch the tube for a proper fit and strong weld. All of the tools and material sources are listed below.
If you want to learn tube bending from a master I suggest the following videos from @TheFabricatorSeries

I love the direction this channel is going. I haven't given a damn about anything you've posted since the beginning of the year and I've watched every video at least twice. Get 'em, Dave!
It is going left only.
"Hoosier Daddy" 😂
I'm a kart builder from Australia looking at a bender to make my own chassis so thanks for the overview I liked you vid.....no bullshit straight to the point. Looking forward to seeing footage at the track. Cheers John
Three things... I should have referred to the hydraulic ram as an AIR hydraulic ram. yes, I'm aware you can have removable bolts in the concrete to fasten and remove the bender. Yes, some people prefer to notch with an angle grinder. Thanks and stay healthy and safe!
@@harrisonofthenorth The ram is hydraulic, and is pumped using air. Think of a jack, instead of pumping the handle up and down that action is done with air.
@@harrisonofthenorth did you read my first reply it explains it? It is a hydraulic piston. It is not a pneumatic piston. Typically hydraulics use an electric pump to pump the hydraulic fluid. This uses air to run the pump. There are also manual pumps, like a jack for instance. I hope this makes sense.
@@harrisonofthenorth hey guy I’m sorry you can’t understand. You seem to lack a basic knowledge of anything mechanical. Nothing I said was conflicting. I’m not in a corner you are in a corner where you can’t seem to see that this hydraulic cylinder uses air to drive the pump. Something powers the pump in any hydraulic system. Do you at least understand that? The air and hydraulic fluid do not mix, the air powers the pump. It could be operated by hand like the lever in a jack or an electric motor or in this case air turns the pump that pumps the hydraulic fluid. If you don’t understand that I don’t know what to tell you. I’m done wasting my time trying to explain. Google it! They sell these air/hydraulic pistons. If you spent just 10% of the time spent trying to argue with me on increasing your reading comprehension we wouldn’t still be talking about this.
Man, sitting here in the evening having a couple adult drinks and your helmet comes down in the middle of your speech. I think I peed a little. Keep up the great work. I love your passion
I didn’t scroll through all the comments so forgive me if someone recommended it already, back in my exhaust making days we had a 360 degree dial that clamped into the end of the pipe. Zero it for the first bend and then when you turn the pipe for compound bends you know exactly where you are in relation to zero degrees.
Brilliant! Thanks!
Nifty trick to keep the bends in line
Cool to see some metalworking! After watching woodworking videos for 10 years, I feel like there isn’t a lot left to learn. Not that I am great at woodworking, but in terms of videos I had all the lessons : )
Good job, Dan!!!
I will probably never do this but I always love your content.
Thank you for posting and keeping our heads entertained!
YOU ROCK DAVE!!!!
Hoosier Daddy! (Thank your for the Easter Egg Dan!)
Thanks! When I saw that little Easter egg I almost lost it!
Awesome stuff David! 😃👍🏻👨🏻🏭🏎️👊🏻 .... Nice edit Dan! 😃👍🏻🎞️✂️🎞️👊🏻
Good job, Dan 👍
I built my first go-kart when I was 12 ... did all of the cutting & welding myself. I put a Suzuki motorcycle engine on it ... I had the only cart at the track with a 5-speed transmission!
I made a bender from scratch that mounts the dies vertically as to not take up much space and make the unit mobile. I use a standard HF jack to bend the tubes. It was originally made for late model race cars (lefthander chassis and such). Uses the same dies as what you are using.
You should make a bender from scratch!! :)
Oh nice! I've seen many late model races in my day! Jack Hewitt!
Dan definitely made the difference.
Hoosier Daddy was brilliant. Thanks for posting, David. I’m quarantined and am starved for entertainment. You delivered!
This is awesome David. I raced karts for a number of years growing up, never made my own chassis though. It's good to see you so genuinely passionate about the new hobby and skills you're learning metalworking. Glad you're allowing us to have a glimpse and follow along. Your attitude and energy is an inspiration. Thank you
I am not interested in metal working but I really enjoy watching you discover new hobbies and skills. Keep going!
Old school time from when you had to shoot your own video. 😄 I enjoy you most when your having fun, and it's pretty obvious here. Frame is looking good! Thanks for sharing!
I love great content but I also love great people. With this channel I get the best of both. David you seem like a genuinely great guy. I love your enthusiasm for making and learning new things. Thank you for sharing your passion with us!
I appreciate the links! Not many people do that anymore.
Thanks for the great videos!
Love the video, David! I'm glad you're enjoying the go kart build. Thanks for sharing and being so open and transparent with your setup and costs.
thumbs up for Dan!
Awesome video!
Top congrats from Portugal
Nice foray into metal fab. Enjoy the go cart project! Thanks for the great content.
LOVE seeing you expand into different mediums and a new hobby as the passion you have in everything you do is infectious. Looking forward to the fiberglass videos.
thanks Dan!
I laughed when your welding hood fell down in the middle of your outro speech.
Cool to see the process behind this!
Cool stuff 👍👍👍👍
Great video Dave!! Your welds are looking good!
Really enjoyed that vid David, you’ve inspired me to get into welding. I’m going to do my kids a jungle gym.
I am very familiar with the moosh, gunk, yeugh making things seem not level. Nailed it!
Every time you ask for Dan I flash back to the drill press video where you needed help as it was falling and I panic a little.
Haha!
I didn’t know if I was going to enjoy this video, because I really haven’t had the time to practice my welding. But I will say that I really had a great time watching it! The excitement you show for your newest (and expensive) hobby in as infectious as Covid-19!!
Just to keep you in the loop: last Tuesday I was able to take my first steps on my prosthetic without a cane or walker. Two days later, I was able to walk two laps around the gym. Of course, the next day, they closed the rehab hospital for at least the next 30 days. SMDH
Gotta thank you for giving me motivation to keep working hard to some day - very soon - to get back out to my shop!!
Thank you Bill! Always appreciate your encouragement! Great to hear about your progress! Hope you can still rehab and progress at home.
Ohhhh excited about the fiberglass work!!
Learning a new skill along with some new tools. Cant beat that!
Great video. Easy learning. Have fun and a great week from Jan in Norway
Taking up racing and your love of red leads me to one conclusion;
You are the incarnation of Lightning Mcqueen
Kachow my friend, Kachow
Awesome Dave! That knowledge for metal working keeps expanding! Great to see your inspiration is coming back my man!
Love this. Not something I do but definitely interesting to watch!
I like this video; good work, Dan!
how is dan doing,im in process of designing my ebike and this vid has helped my process and im watching that vid you linked too.thank you
Very well, I'm getting pretty good a being bad at piano.
Love your passion and excitement during this project. Keep going and proud of you for taking on this project. Cannot wait for the cart to be on the track.
I learned a LOT from this. Thanks!
Super cool
Keep doing stuff like this!
Great video. Good instructions. You make it look easy. I see a custom built chopper in your future. : ) Mahalo for sharing! : )
Awesome video! A lot of good information packed in for people to learn. My brother and I appreciate the reference as well, good luck with the project!
thank you! ❤️
love seeing this different kind of content man, wish every channel would mix it up a bit!
Love all this stuff. All of it.
Great stuff, as usual! Just be careful flying around the track!
Finally get to see ya work on the cart. I don't care a lick about metal working but still liked your video, and you don't need to race to run your cart.... Hope Dan is gonna be ok there. Ohh and stuff is hot right after you cut it.. I know you knew that and were just educating us right :-)
😁👌🏻
Amazingly funny and great info! Thanks
David... It's cool to see ya in the metal shop .... Love the video ! Where's Dan 🙏
Great!!!
I raced for about 5 years. The racing bug is a disease that has no cure. Drive fast, take chances.
Awesome stuff!
👌🏽 Good stuff. Thanks, sir.
There's also lower priced intermediate options with a ram similar to a bottle jack or porta-power that you hand pump.
Thank you Dave!! Take care :o)
4:00 I like that tire, that's a nice tire.
You should use these techniques to make some cool chairs
That's the plan! I also got a die for 3/4" tubing!+
Kart frame looks nice!!!! Keep the videos coming! Been trying to find plans for one like that. Do you by chance have plans you would share or sale? Trying to make one for my son.
Cool focus bro!!!! 😂
Super dope dude! I like how detailed you get. Also metal is just insanely cool. Do you have a day job? Or is Make Something your full time gig?
Thanks! Make Something has been my full time gig for the last 5 years!
@@MakeSomething Damn straight dude! Way to go. Did you gradually work up to doing that or just jump right in full time?
Too bad you wont film the gokart build!! Would love to see that
I’m going to make a video of me putting it all together once the frame is done!
@@MakeSomething Awesome! Looking forward to it
Look at you getting all Barney Oldfield
Top Notch!
Have been waiting for This :)
Honestly far less complicated than I thought... and I have the model 3 too!
How did you make the 2-axis bends with the tube from the waist to the front wheel spindles?
What a coincidence, I just bought and fixed up a hydraulic pipe bender.
Swag is 109.00...Harbor freight 8 ton ram is 99.00 great product for my shop
1 vid a Day i Like it
Coming back tomorrow with another!!
@@MakeSomething i am living the quarantine
You've got a really nice set up there bro. Looks like you're a serious cart builder.
Now go get a wrench that fit's that tube-bender lock down bolt and quit using a pair of pliers.
I still love you though.
Remember, wash your hands.
How about I get a wrench that fits your ass? Wait. No. Never mind.
Where did you get the air filter uptick
See you at the GBurg track!
6:32 you have missed your calling - with that noise you should have become a pirate. ;)
Dan?
Where's Dan?
Right, Dan?
...Dan?
lolol
Is that ram actually hydraulic? Like, is it using air pressure to drive a hydraulic pump when then moves the ram with hydraulic fluid? Or is it all just air pressure doing the work? Because if it's all just air pressure, then it's a pneumatic ram, not hydraulic
Please see my pinned comment. Thanks.
Haha, how good was that weld after jumping in so quick after that piece to camera there at the end 😂? I suppose if you already knew you needed to remake the part, it wouldn't really matter if it wasn't perfect, so good production value😉 .
hey can you make a go kart frame tutorial
3:56 That's what he said !

Classic Picciuto
Why clone a chassis you already have? New one lighter? Need a spare? Tell us more...
Because I enjoy making things. And I don’t know how to improve on it yet without lots of laps and data.
what welding table is that ?

11:17 Only hot when you touch it buddy!
Double true
Dude I've been making bandsaw boxes with my class inspired by your videos and now I'm trying to figure out this model 54 in the shop and now I am here. You should come sub for me so I can go hunting!
What about water bending?
you need to build a chopper
I see you've crashed JD2's website #picciutoeffect
