Great video!!!🏆 Through A LOT of trial and error I found ALL bonus rooms myself in the game EXCEPT number 1 on the list!!! There was absolutely NO WAY I EVER was going to find that bonus within a bonus I had to find it with assistance from probably the internet, (I can't remember what outside source, think it was the internet). I got 101% in this game one time and never again, I did have to just jump offscreen everywhere possible in tanked up trouble to find that one, and assume the start and end of every level might have one under it. without the ! indication this challenge would have been impossible for me, nice work showing the most obscure ones. I remember figuring out #1 in the same way, the only indication is the arrow always points to breakable walls and it's the only bonus room that has one on both sides
@@JetWolfEX very nice job with the completion, seriously… some of them are absurdly hard to find. I will accept the arrow as a great hint, the two parts where it completely loses me is getting a barrel for 3 bananas. The clue for the Ropey Rampage barrel is that the cliff you shoot into has steps above it. So if you make your way onto the cliff the normal way you are encouraged to jump down a little further on the left and discover the banana trail. That should be enough to prompt you to jump down earlier between the palm trees and even if you don't get it the first time, you'll see the barrel you need to jump into for next time. On the same note, if you found this bonus room, you would have the knowledge that you can shoot yourself into a wall to find a hidden entrance, which you could then use in Barrel Blast Canyon to figure out its secret as well.

Another awesome list, my friend. I was definitely certain about what number 1 and 2 would be, though I was surprised to see the one where you go over the ceiling in Elevator Antics to be on the lower end. That one stumped me quite a lot; up to that point the game had been training you to find some of these more cheeky bonus rooms by taking leaps of faith into pits, misfiring with blast barrels, backtracking or just peeling your eyes for hidden barrels. The idea that you have to get on top of the ceiling in an area that is using those bee enemies to discourage such an act is simply something that would never occur to me based on what has been taught. Especially with how the visuals wouldn't lead you to believe you could go on top of there. I'm fairly certain that there isn't any other moment in the game where it incentivizes walking on the ceiling in what feels like an out of bounds area. I just don't think it's as cleanly conveyed as the secret warp zone in 1-2 of Super Mario Bros for example. I'd personally rank it at number 4, but that's just me. Everything else feels spot on. A lot of fun to watch and to listen to your points. Seeing the awesome visual and sound effect you put in with the thumbnail in the title card is always a treat!

I totally agree with #1. It took me several hours of searching before I gave up and needed to use a manual. However, I miss cryptic stuff like that in games.
I found all of these as a kid, though admittedly it was not something I managed in only a few runs. I'll list what I recall from back then. The Stop Go Station - The bananas give it away as you say, found this one without too much trouble. Forest Frenzy - I just noticed when playing so I didn't know people had issue with it. Platform Perils - This I remember annoying me a lot as a kid, you know the bonus is there, so you keep banging your head against it trying to figure it out. I eventually thought "there must be a blast barrel offscreen that sends you to it." so started losing lives with leaps of faith, did eventually find the platform though. Barrel Cannon Canyon - Found by accident from missing the barrel shot. Elevator Antics - Another I found my accident. I would usually jump up offscreen when playing. The Ropey Rampage - There is actually a hint sort of, and that is the lack of an "N" in the main level, so you know a secret area exists, and that it's somewhere between the O and G. Snow Barrel Blast - I think I found by accident since I hit the zinger and was a retard and just fell instead of trying to jump back in the barrel and was like "oh a secret!" Tanked Up Trouble - This was the last one I found, I remember spending so many lives doing leaps of faith hoping to find it. By far the hardest for me to find. Urang-utan Gang - I don't remember struggling with these, but I did a lot of backtracking in games in general when I was younger, so that might be why. Temple Tempest - This I found pretty easy just since I always carried barrels to walls "just in case" and it payed off many times. Mine Cart Madness - An easy find since I jumped non-stop in the mine-cart levels as a kid lol. Trick-Track-Trek - Not too bad by this point I kid of learned "check what's below" The Oil Drum Ally - This one is quite weird and cruel on the devs part tbh, but they do give a hint by putting an arrow in the background, I remember trying the one banana thing after seeing the arrow. It's stupid, but it doesn't require leaps of faith and you can get back in the bonus pretty easy since it's early in the level, so it's kind of a 9.5/10 instead of a 10/10 (Unlike the tanked up trouble one for kid-me)
Very good vid. This explains a lot from my childhood, finally closure. That #1 is truly crazy. Can you do DKC2 next? Those aren’t as bad but there are some tricky ones
Hey, great video! I love finding secrets and these unfairly hidden ones make DKC the worst in the trilogy for me. Also the fact that they don't actually reward you with anything too exciting. I actually managed to find almost all of them blind when I played the game for the first time when it came out in NSO. I found the one in the oil stage completely accidentally. I was zooming through the stage trying to find the bonus when I accidentally got into the bonus stage I had already found. In my hurry I just bumbed into the barrels as quickly as I could just to get out and the barrel came out! But still I couldn't do anything with it so I figured something weird was going on. So I searched a bit and found out that it was bugged and if your Kong's feet were touching the ground the game thought you completed the bonus and threw you out. You are ok if you throw the barrel from afar, just be sure that your feet are not touching the ground when it breaks the wall. Anyway, the only one I never found was the fuel one. Had to look it up.

Appreciate you watching & commenting again, my friend! Yes, going to do a few more Top 10s of the trilogy. Also going to rank the levels in difficulty with the less capable/forgiving Kong, no checkpoints, no animal pals… similar to the zero power ups / no yoshi / no checkpoints Super Mario World video I made last month. So it’ll be DK in the the first, Diddy in the 2nd, and Kiddy in the 3rd. These take a while to make, but yes we have a whole lot of them ahead!
Donkey Kong Country 2 has similar problems with invisible walls and unintuitive locations. There were 3 coins and 2 bonus rooms I could never find until I stumbled upon a guide in a thrift shop (this was before the internet was everywhere).
@@kwepc90thespeedrunner33 yes, we will do top 10s for the hidden bonus rooms and big DK coins on DKC2 & DKC3. Also planning to do a top 10 hardest levels without DK barrels or checkpoint for the whole trilogy.
It's been a long time since I played dkc so I don't remember which of these that you pointed out on your list that I found. I mean I've definitely found a whole bunch of the other ones you described leading up to the ones you made on this list in each level, but my goodness the one at number one is just insane. I can't believe they thought that was a good idea. I love the dkc games, but I kid you not the only one I ever got all the bonus rooms in was dkc3. Yes dkc3 is the only one that I've completed everything and I mean every single thing in. All the bonus coins, all the DK coins, and all the banana birds. But the other games I could not do that
Wow doing 101 on all three files to make this list definitely helps show these are certainly the top 10. A lot of these seem like they only would reward making mistakes to see them/accidentally fall into them. So much off-screen makes it seem ridiculous. #1 is most definitely ridiculous though like come on "what are these rules?" for real
I had to look for a strategy guide online to be able to get the 101% after years of playing the game since I was a boy, the most I could get on my own was around 85% I think. Cool video.
I never found them all, but oddly enough, I did stumble into the hardest one by myself. I believe I accidentally got the banana and just said "oh well, I'll practice my matching for next time." When I won a barrel, the arrow sign made it obvious what to do. I must have had Diddy, and just walked it into the wall.
@@zacthebold5136 very nice! Although I believe walking into the wall wouldn’t work, it seems to kick you out… maybe you jumped? But either way that’s awesome!
@MarMaxGaming Yes, the bonuses weren't there. There's actually roms of the competition cart on the internet. They usually make their way onto Chinese handhelds, in place of the actual game.
Somehow I found them all myself back then without any guides or internet :) When I realized an exclamation mark hinted at the completion rate, it was easier. For all three DK games. I also spent a lot of time figuring out fatalities and ultimates and ultras and humiliations in KI 😁 Luckily, experience from MK games helped:)
@@gauwoof very nice job, seriously! The experimentation phases must been out of control… which levels did you fling yourself off the edge the most? What took the most time? And at what point did the 3 matching bananas for a barrel come to you? More DKC videos are coming, sounds like you’ll enjoy those too! Also wow, figuring out fighting moves without any instructions sounds pretty tedious and insane! If you want some hardcore Rareware action, we beat Battletoads on 2 player on original NES. Now that’s hardcore too!
@@MysticMike yes that’s a good clue, with the arrow there too… but the weird part is single bananas getting you a barrel, that’s not how the mini game works anywhere else so it’s very bizarre!
Great vid! In Ropey Rampage, there's a set of steps on the rocky wall off the ledge that if you jump down, you can see the trail of bananas, which I suppose could be a hint or indicator to the player. Also yeah, jumping towards the exit in Oil Drum Alley with DK works just fine, just as it does with Diddy.
@@mattdog1000000 thank you! I never saw those bananas before, I must’ve passed by quickly while jumping or something. Also, when you say “works just fine” that wasn’t the case for me, he doesn’t have front collision with the barrel like Diddy… tried to illustrate that with the footage, so the earliest active hitbox is behind him, and I still touched the floor! What a bizarre scenario! I appreciate you watching and commenting
@@MarMaxGaming It has worked every time I've tried it just now... Are you holding right the whole time while jumping into the wall with the barrel? It just works when I try it.
Oh, I see what you've got wrong. You think DK can't break the wall by walking into it since it "appears" that he's not holding the barrel in front of him. But, that's not the case, DK will still break walls by walking into them, the only issue is some walls in other stages are too low for the hit box to be detected. In this case though, it is not too low, DK can walk (or in this unique case, jump) into the wall by just moving forward. No need to drop the barrel, no need to throw it from a distance, no need for any other trick. Just jump into the wall while holding the barrel the same way you would with Diddy Kong. It works.
@@mattdog1000000 haha c’mon Matt, it’s beyond the fact he’s holding it above his head, or that it “appears” this way… you should know that as a player - it’s the fact he literally doesn’t break walls on vast majority of the levels while walking into them. I’ve pressed him right into walls while he holds the barrel above his head and they don’t break - but apparently there are some select walls taller where it works, and this is one of those rare cases. Pretty mind blowing trivia! Funny how trends that we see over many years of playing don’t end up being the entire answer, would’ve been good to show here! Thanks for watching & commenting, if you want more intense challenges look at the home page for a 6 mile run while playing Battletoads.
@@MarMaxGaming Haha, I actually walk into a lot of enemies and walls with DK while he's holding a barrel! You wouldn't think it'd act as a frontwards shield, but in many cases it does, just as it does with Diddy!! But also, yeah, most breakable walls are too short for it to work, lol... Dang game!! I love it!
@@sunnydays341 I’ve heard that before! I did access it multiple times for this video, maybe it’s until you screw up the letters? I didn’t have to redo any of the 3 save files for it, thankfully!
As long as you gain access to the bonus room, itll count to the 101%. You dont need to win or finish, as some of the bonus levels have no exit except for bottomless pits. The one exception is the bonus room in a bonus room in Oil Drum Alley.
@ yes all true, which is really unfortunate bc having to jump into the wall with Diddy is just weird! It’s so strange, these days some might even say “nice try, Diddy!”
15:45 as a 3-4 year old in the 90s I found this. What seems unintuitive today was really natural as a kid lol. Didn’t have other media to turn to, so you explored a lot in the levels, doing ridiculous things cause why not? I feel like I suddenly understand the Minecraft and Roblox kids 🤣🤣. One more thing: in one of the earlier ostrich levels (maybe the first one), if you got back to the start of the stage from a high point, you can make it over the starting wall and do a bonus stage that gives you tons of 1-ups, so going back to the start is kind of hinted at in more than one stage.
@@EzBz982 fantastic find! There’s absolutely no doubt that being a little kid with nothing else to do could result in doing things that don’t really make any sense! It’s the only level where you return to the beginning in such a weird way, I mean the first level in the game lets you go back into his house that you’re right next to, you can also go left in Stop & Go Station for a shortcut, and you do find Expresso by going left at the beginning of a snow level… all of these pale in comparison to a long backtrack with zero hints; we can try to make sense of these things after we found it, but it’s just insanity. A lot of these WOULD make sense with just a banana or kong letter, otherwise it’s just a massive guessing game! Appreciate you watching & commenting!
Correction: There is actually a level with 4 bonus rooms. And that's Oil Drum Alley. There are 3 bonus rooms there, but even though it was mentioned and being #1, did you forget that's a bonus within a bonus? That counts as the 4th bonus room.
@@DrcMgcnPuzzle this is a little bit of a misunderstanding, yes it technically has 4, I see what you’re saying… when playing the stage overall my point was orang-utan gang has 5 hidden throughout the level, while the next closest stages have 3 hidden throughout the level.. and Oil Drum Alley has 3 throughout the stage, while one of them has a room hidden within one of its 3 rooms. There aren’t 4 separate rooms if you get what I’m saying from a design perspective, 1 is within 1 of the 3. So yeah, that’s what I meant by that! It would’ve been good to mention when talking about it.

@@jeffcox6539 this sounds like a myth! What’s the reward… don’t cliff hanger us like that, I’ve beaten it in under an hour without dying but didn’t 101% during that.
@MarMaxGaming so I looked it up and you don't have to beat it with 101% after all, you just beat it with one life under an hour. The reward is just Cranky praising you.

they're not secret bonus rooms, but on the topic of intentionally falling "to your death" there was one time I discovered a level warp in "Mine Kart Carnage." At the very beginning of the stage where you're supposed to jump the gap into the minecart, I somehow jumped short by accident and thought I was going to die, but instead got blasted to the end of the level. You gotta stay close to the ledge too when you jump off. It's not in the middle of the gap or closer to the tracks, the barrel is close to the beginning ledge. Also, there is another level warp in "Stop & Go Station" where again as soon as you start the level, press left like you're trying to exit from where you began and you'll walk right out of the stage and end up near the end. I used to use that level warp all the time because I never wanted to play that level for real. lol

But the other games I could not do that
Those top three are DEFINITELY there to sell guides, NP magazines, or the old infamous 1-900 line on the back of the manual.
@13:00 the other problem with that, is if you think the fuel explodes, you still don't go down, you try to hop to the right to bounce off the bird
Lines of cut dialogue in the game have Cranky give hints about many of these, but in the end only hints about bonuses in the first world were kept
I hope you do this for DKC 2, 3, Returns, and Tropical Freeze!
Me too, great video. Love all DK, new subscriber to this channel
About #10: one info is missing why it's even a but harder: you can only access the room with Donkey, not with Diddy (I tried it coupla days ago)
besides the blind jumps, I held the barrel with diddy and walked around, and that helped me find most of them
I had to look for a strategy guide online to be able to get the 101% after years of playing the game since I was a boy, the most I could get on my own was around 85% I think. Cool video.
Being very young and bad at the game allowed me to find many of these by accident
The #1 room was ridiculous and counter intuitive. Nobody was going to get it spontaneously
I like how the first game did it best. They were there but weren't required to get to play all the levels. 😎
I see donkey Kong uploads i sub I still remember all the secret stuff from my childhood
I remember participating in Blockbuster's Donkey Kong competition. I jumped off a ledge, where a bonus barrel should have been, and I just died.
@@jwill7998 haha are they not included in the competition cart? Or are you saying it felt as though one should’ve been there…
@MarMaxGaming
Yes, the bonuses weren't there. There's actually roms of the competition cart on the internet. They usually make their way onto Chinese handhelds, in place of the actual game.
Ah, time to add this to my collection of obscure retro game information. I was a big fan of DKC2 and didnt play 1 and 3 much
@@SteamedSam 2 & 3 will be coming too!
12:32 That one I had the most trouble finding.
Somehow I found them all myself back then without any guides or internet :)
When I realized an exclamation mark hinted at the completion rate, it was easier. For all three DK games.
I also spent a lot of time figuring out fatalities and ultimates and ultras and humiliations in KI 😁
Luckily, experience from MK games helped:)
Bruh I can see why number one...is number one 😅🤣
If im not mistaken, the oil drum alley one is the only bonus room where its a wall on the right and just not an open exit. That could be the clue.
Dang game!! I love it!
speaking of secrets: if you walk back where diddy & donkey kong came from at 2:01 you will find a hidden level skip.
If im right, the last bonus only works 1 time a savefile. So 25 years ago, after one try i couldn't do it again, which is mad.
If half of this list isn’t the entirety of Orangutan Gang or the infamous Oil Drum Alley I’ll stand hanging
@@Fruitman1997 haha both are included, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed :)
I knew instantly which was gonna be number 1
number 1 one feels like some sort of easter egg never meant to be found
The famous bonus room within a bonus room trick… 😅
I found out not too long ago that there's a reward of sorts beating the game with 101% under an hour and some change. Cranky hints at it, and i always thought he was just running his mouth.
@ I have a video on the channel of beating it in under an hour only using 1 life, and Cranky’s dialogue didn’t change at all. He still says that he could beat it in under an hour just using 1 life, so unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be true. I beat it in about 56 minutes, it was uploaded a few years ago if you want to see for yourself!
This game looks like the wild animal park in temecula california
The only secrets I could not find as a kid was the level warps that need Diddy or Donkey not sure how you would figure those out
@@kyleisreal_tv that would make for an interesting video too! Those are very obscure.
Doesn't cranky give you hints to most of these secrets?
@@Freakincool1212 great question, not in the original DKC! He gets more helpful with hints you can buy for tokens in the sequels
Me, before starting the video: It's Oil Drum Alley or Orang Utan Gang, right?
Me, now: LESGOOOOOO
great video! two hours after seeing this i was watching another video about dkc and there's footage from the guy casually accessing the last bonus room (the inception one) using donkey kong!
ua-cam.com/video/0vpFlj5al4o/v-deo.html at 13:00
they're not secret bonus rooms, but on the topic of intentionally falling "to your death" there was one time I discovered a level warp in "Mine Kart Carnage." At the very beginning of the stage where you're supposed to jump the gap into the minecart, I somehow jumped short by accident and thought I was going to die, but instead got blasted to the end of the level. I used to use that level warp all the time because I never wanted to play that level for real. lol
@@ry.hillner88 to be fair and accurate - some of these 100% match the definition of a “secret”; if something’s location is a secret, then it’s fair game to call them a secret, because that’s accurately what the word means. And yes those are some great warps, I remember being blown away by those too. They’re secret warps, in fact!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Omg, this right here. I came for this comment. I found this ONCE when I was 6, by dumb luck, never stumbled on it again in 30 years. I thought I had imagined it.
@@MarMaxGaming - Sorry for the way I may have worded it. But I what I meant was: what I personally found by accident were just level warps and not secret bonus rooms. Still are secret but not what you were showcasing. I wasn't trying to say what you were showing in your videos weren't a secret. It's just that you were showcasing bonus levels, so since my comment was a little off topic that's why I lead with: "They're not secret bonus levels" because I was about to talk about finding levels warps. Sorry again for any misunderstanding. You made a great vid!
@ oh I see, Ry! Thanks for clearing up the misunderstanding, I appreciate your comment and what you were sharing! I’ve had some people act like these are “obvious” despite them being blind lol so I read this in that way, thanks for clearing it up!
Why is the ballon green in 8:20? Normally it's always red in this game.
@@wihatmi5510 the red 1up balloons are most common, while green balloons are 2up, and least common are 3up blue balloons. Appreciate you watching & commenting!
It's because this game has been remade on different ports
@@Issachar-northern-kingdom this was on original Super Nintendo, they’re colored differently for lives. Red is 1, green is 2, blue is 3!
