    On the "Be gay, do crime" thing, I think a lot of the more LGBT aligned people find themselves drawn towards "villains" since they feel like they were outcast from society (and just ignore all of the crimes done). It's like rebelling without actually having a reason to rebel. This leads to scenarios like the one you mentioned, where every single "diverse" character ends up as a criminal. Another example would be Hazbin Hotel showing that Hell is something like 70% homosexuals.

    • @WobblesandBean
      @WobblesandBean 2 місяці тому +35

      Hell I'm not even gay, and I totally lean towards supervillains cuz they're fun. I was also an outcast as a kid, so even though I don't relate to the obvious coding a lot of classic villains have, I still feel that affinity.
      ETA: Yeeeaaahhh, the Hazbin Hotel thing is....yikes. Viv definitely did not think through the implications of that one.

      Interesting how you mention Hazbin, because I was pondering this writing choice as well. From what I heard someone conclude about Hazbin, a diverse cast being in hell could be more of a figurative symbol of how marginalized groups are often stuck in terrible living situations which discourage them from believing they could improve.
      I can’t tell whether or not they considered the connotation behind queer people being condemned, but I can def tell they didn’t think that through in Gotham Knights, especially when the main villain is just a rich lady dicking around.

    2:30 Alright, out of curiosity/boredom, I crunched the numbers:
    Forbes, apparently, estimates Bruce Wayne's net worth at $9.2 billion.
    The population of Chicago-as a rough stand-in for Gotham, which I feel is plausible-that's living in poverty, according to my numbers is 453,050.
    Assuming you were able to squeeze every penny's worth out of Wayne's estate, that comes out to $20,306 per-impoverished Gothamite. That's assuming you just cut them all a check and washed your hands of the matter, and didn't do something like put it into some kind of investment fund, and arranged to pay the dividends/interest out to the Poor Gothamites, which would probably be more effective in the long run. But which I kind of suspect was beyond the TV show's writers' ken.
    This of course, like you said, doesn't take into account any other economic effects, or the possibility of more poor people moving TO Gotham to take advantage of the Dead Wayne Guilt Fund, assuming it's not just a one-time payout.
    (Also not taking into account crime caused by the greedy, predatory, psychopathic, and/or monsterously insane people who'd be PREYING on the Poor Gothamites who now have more wealth to steal.)

  • @asimplenobody7797

    Now, there is a train of thought that might explain the Court setting up the Knights. The Court, possibly knowing of Bruce's friendship with Jim Gordon, could have feared Jim becoming suspicious of Bruce's death and looking into things. While Jim could be removed relatively easily via Talon, having both him and Bruce dead would likely bring unwanted heat and attention on Gotham, something the Court would definitely not want. This, pin the murder on some nobodies and give the cops a definitive target to follow. Keeps the cops away from the Court and potentially cleans up any loose ends for them without them having to commit any of their resources.
    Now, I have no idea if Jim's even in this show (they took out Alfred, so probably not), but hey, I've shown it could make sense. But while the two minutes ai spent on this is likely what the writers spent on the plot in time, I doubt they put as much thought into it as I did.

    • @LegendaryDorkKnight
      @LegendaryDorkKnight 17 днів тому

      But that makes no sense. They framed Turner anyway so why not just let the cops conclude that Turner committed the murder? While they're running around chasing ghosts with the Turner angle, literally no heat would be on the Court.
      And if they DID somehow eventually figure out that Turner is innocent, so what? There are DOZENS of people in Gotham who'd want Bruce death. Not even just Batman, but Bruce because his humanitarian efforts directly oppose many of the career criminals in Gotham. Everyone from the Penguin to the Falcones would be a suspect. This is ignoring the fact that Bruce being Batman would come out eventually in the investigation and that opens up a whole HOST of other suspects. And the Court KNOWS Bruce is Batman so they'd know this all already.

    • @asimplenobody7797
      @asimplenobody7797 17 днів тому

      @@LegendaryDorkKnight Many of the other villains wouldn't have been suspected due to the location of the murder. You'd need a lot to breach Wayne's security, which might lead a more intelligent person (hence Gordon specifically and not the police in general) to suspect a bigger player than one of the usual suspects. Moreover, if it was one of Batman's normal rogues gallery, you know they'd be bragging about it. Most of these guys could only be brought down by Batman, what's Gotham PD going to do without their favorite vigilante to say Joker or Two-Face?
      For that matter, whomever is investigating doesn't need to know it was the Court right way, merely doubt the official story enough to investigate on their own so that the Court gets nervous enough to justify sending the assassin out in the first place. He only needs to get close enough to suspect something is off, heck you could have Jim start by checking with the rest of the rogues gallery and noticing the details not adding up. Again, it requires a particular sort; Jim Gordon, one of the Bat Family, etc. To even work.

    • @asimplenobody7797
      @asimplenobody7797 17 днів тому

      @@LegendaryDorkKnight The thing is, none of those disprove my version of events. It does not matter how many suspects there are, only that there is doubt that Turner was guilty, thus prompting the investigation.
      Jim knew Bruce. It could be reasoned within universe that he also has met Turner, at least once. Enough to get a general impression of the kid, and that may be enough to have Jim question if Turner was guilty. So he investigates, and yes, he might start with the rest of the rogues gallery, especially when it comes out that Bruce is Batman (not sure if Gordon ever found that out before, been a while since I watched the cartoons). But he would notice little things being off. There's no calling card for one of the villains, no sign of Ivy's pollen or Freeze's ice or one of Joker's cards, nothing. And this was Batman, their nemesis. By now they'd have been bragging from the rooftops. But they're not. How strange...
      Then, perhaps Gordon gets close enough to spook the Court. Maybe he doesn't find evidence tying them to the murder, but maybe of their existence. They're ties to Wayne. Enough that they feel justified in sending the Talon to ensure there is in fact nothing to find. And the rest flows from there.

  • @sarafontanini7051

    near as I can gather, even in the comics the court of owls aren't the most...compelling villains. Just an evil secret society of unnamed rich people in gotham who are like the illuminati of gotham who control everything somehow for some reason and target batman cause he's...doing...stuff that goes against their vague goals and motives (lets not talk about why they didn't do anything about him in the past, or how the criminals of gotham play into their goals since they supposedly did nothing about them despite their implied vast power and resources)
    They have cool masks that go well with them being rich people in fancy suits and dresses giving this creepy dichitomy vibe but as villains, as actual characters, they're...pretty nothing. They're too vague to have an interesting characterisation (as they're supposed to be a faceless conspiracy) and lack a leadership or membership to latch onto (as again their members are supposed to be completely unknown and mysterious) and their threat level is way to vague beyond their immortal owlman army theysupposedly have for some reason somehow.
    and far as I'm aware noone's been able to actually DO much with them in any form, nothing meaningful or impactful, which is a shame as they're among the few fairly recent villains introduced in the comics (like, they were probably made like maybe a decade or so now) that aren't one offs.
    A neat idea, making the idle rich of gotham actual villains as like another side to the criminal eelement and the corrupt police and mobs of the early years, but...yeah they just aren't that great beynd their core premise.

    • @LegendaryDorkKnight
      @LegendaryDorkKnight 17 днів тому +1

      In the comics, the Court of Owls is usually hands-off unless Batman gets too close to pinning one of them. That's the only thing that makes them menacing in the comics: that they are faceless and do JUST ENOUGH to prevent both Batman and Bruce from enacting real change in Gotham. Having them be the main villains of the show was a MASSIVE mistake because they would literally never take the spotlight like this.

    • @aokhoinguyenang3992
      @aokhoinguyenang3992 9 днів тому

      In the comics(at least in their 1st appearance), they went after Bruce not Batman because he was going to reconstruct the city into something better. The Owl didn't like that because it could potentially interfere with their control over the city. Batman investigate them after they attacked Bruce so they hunt Batman. After they captured him they put him in a laybering where the only source of water is drugged & they watched as fear overtake him. He escape..... The key to the battle between Bat & Owl lies in who knows Gotham more. So this miniserie is about exploring Gotham history & fighting for its future

  • @ObiadStudio

    6:46 I think they wanted to frame Bruce's son specifically so he won't honor his late dad's will, and since they couldn't get him in the right place at the right time, they hired some random low-lives. It also looked suitable for the public, and that's a factor worth considering, too
    Anyway, if you want to watch a movie where The Owl Court makes sense, check out "Batman vs. Robin," which is based on the "Batman: The Court of Owls" comic series. I'm always saying that animations are the only good way to watch DC content

    idk why they had the Court of Owls hire those teenagers to do anything. Just have Turner hear a noise coming his father's study or whatever that room is and follow the sound. When he gets there, the Talon agent is shooting Bruce and flees before Turner can try to apprehend him. Turner is framed for the murder so he flees the mansion and since the police are looking for him, he has to work with criminals to try and clear his name. During his time with the criminals, Robin finds him (let's say he and his party were stealing equipment needed to set up a base of operations because having them steal luxury items is lame af). Robin believes he didn't kill Batman and says she'll help him, but that also means she has to compromise and work with the criminals she usually hunts down while also trying to maintain an amicable relationship with the police.
    Boom! Major boxes ticked. Batman is killed, Turner is a framed fugitive trying to clear his name, and he meets these other criminals over the course of the first few episodes. Took me about 5 minutes.

    I'm going to be honest about the Court of Owls. Out of all interpretations throughout shows, movies, games, and comics, the ones in the Harley Quinn show makes the most sense. The CoO is usually depicted as a secret society of the wealthy and aristocratic people in Gotham that continuously plot to control over Gotham city, but why the hell would you want to control Gotham. The city sucks and even if it has opportuned real estate, the presence of someone like Batman and Joker makes it not worthwhile. As a secret society of rich people, I'd believe that the CoO would hold Eyes Wide Shut style parties (orgies) among its members, and that's about it.

They don't explain how The Court operates the way they do alongside allowing supervillains wreak terror in Gotham. They only really expand on the Talons & Dick Grayson's past tying into them. Somehow The CW & WB/DC themselves are terrible at making the barebones concept any better. It's practically a outline they can improve upon & fill in but they don't. It's really lazy.
