Hey guys, thank you for the feedback - very informative. We also moved to Auckland in Feb 2023 but from Cape Town. A few suggestions: on my 3yr work visa I managed to get 5yr vehicle finance at a decent interest rate - reach out if you would like their contact details. For spices, look on Google maps for the Indian spice shops & SA shops - they have most if not better spices. Just check food expire dates on SA shops stock! 😊
At some stage you'll go back for a visit so here are a couple of tricks I use to deal with it. If its a long flight of 10+ hours try and get a morning flight. Flying in itself is tiring so ideally you'll get to your destination at night & be able to sleep. But for somewhere like South Africa where you are looking at 2 flights look into having a stopover for the night. It makes a huge difference as sometimes you could be looking at 3,4,5 hours between connections. The next thing is if you arrive in the morning DO NOT go to bed. Stay up all that first day & have an early night in your new destination by 8 or 9pm. That way you'll acclimate within a couple of days. The final thing is eating. Your body doesn't normally eat at 3am. When traveling dont try & eat 3 meals a day, cut it to 2 or even 1. So im guessing you're looking at 15hours plus of flying time to get from SA to NZ & there's currently a 9 hr time difference. If you left SA at 9 am the earliest youd get to nz would be midnight SA time. But it's 9am in NZ so they serve you breakfast just before you land. Do not eat it. Then 3 hrs later its lunch but for your body its 3am. Dont eat it. The earliest you could eat would be the evening meal in NZ as it's the equivalent of your breakfast in sa. But keep it a light meall. Circadian rhymes are the key for both sleeping & eating

We went back to SA for a visit in March and it was about $3000-3500 each minimum. The 2x10 hour flights with Sinagapore airlines was manageable. We hadn't gone back to visit in 3 years. 1 because of covid and 2 cost
It’s just so expensive! We promised ourselves that we would pull go home once every 2 years and fly our parents over every off year. Don’t know if that’s practical but we will try

I am surprised there are no direct flights from NZ to SA given that so many South Africans have migrated there. Maybe there are more of them in AUS than NZ. I am from South Africa but have been living in the States for over 10 years and I must say that going home is like a piece of cake. There are so many flight options now and the cost has remained the same for the last 10 years. In 2007, I paid a $2,500 round-trip ticket and I have never had to pay over this price since then. There are several direct flights between the states and SA. Let's hope that New Zealand will have flights to SA someday. Enjoy your stay. Btw, I am from the Free State as well.

For your wife, with her PhD in geography, she could teach high school. A lot of Kiwis have PhDs and teach in secondary schools, because as you said, academic teaching jobs are in a very precarious place at present. Little job security.
@@Dunnstakenz I’m a Head of English at a high school. I get paid $30k more than a friend who is a lecturer at Victoria University. Plus I have job security, discounted medical insurance, and good school holidays (although some of that is used for marking and prep). I would suggest if you don’t get a job in your area, you go to Auckland College of Ed and do the one year course to train as a secondary teacher and go teaching. You will quickly get up to the top of the scale (which next year is $105k p.a.) plus management units are $5k per unit (if you became a Head of Department you would have between 1-3 units, depending on the size of the school). The private schools pay considerably above those rates - I was paid $30k above my state school rate at the private school I taught at. I chose to give up my goal of teaching at university as I wanted job security as a single mother, and teaching meant I had holidays off with my children, plus I work any marking and prep around them during the holidays and after school hours.

It is only for certain subjects, and not geography, but you may have one of the subjects they list (they are usually maths, science, and Maori - obviously that won’t apply! But you may have some science or maths).
@@Dunnstakenz and the pay is better as a secondary school teacher! I get $105k base rate, plus $5k per management unit. My job offer to lecture in NZ at a university was $75k as a lecturer. A friend is a senior lecturer and he gets $95k.

Wow, these guys are just trying to find any content for this video. Everyone knows how expensive it is to travel here and how far away it is. How did they get here in the 1st place. These guys obviously haven't done enough research before deciding to move here. And the point about not enough spice in the food....really!!!. The meat tastes different due to the climate and grass, non hormones etc they eat. Meat tastes different in mist countries. When in Australia 1st thing I noticed was the meat and was told was due to different grass etc. I used to like these guys, but some of these bulls@#$ excuses are ridiculous. Spices and different tasting meat.. wow.
