There's such a dearth of gardening shows on TV...I'm so glad to have this to watch on youtube. Now I have a much better understanding of how to treat my hydrangeas.
My hydrangea has been blooming for a couple of years since. I bought her. Luckily she blooms in the Spring! Unfortunately it was white and now it is pink. Like all my flowers range from red to coral to varied shades of pink.
I grew up seeing P. Allen Smith's segment "From the Garden" on TV. Now, in my late 30s, having just found his channel by happenstance this week, I feel like I have been reacquainted with an old friend. My childhood included years on a small organic farm, and young adult years included landscaping and nursery work, but over the last decade, I have not had an opportunity to garden or connect much with nature; I have missed it. However, I am soon heading back to country living and have found this veritable treasure chest of content just in time for garden inspiration--and maybe even heritage poultry! Thank you, Mr. Smith for your truly invaluable work and contagious spirit. You are a true American gem.
P. Allen Smith is my go to gardener. I've watched his show for years & love every episode. I have just received my very first Hydrangea from my husband for my birthday. It's a Pinky Winky Panicle Hydrangea. First place I went to to learn about the care of these beautiful plants is P. Allen Smith gardening. Great video! I learned a bunch & enjoyed a few laughs! Thank you Allen & staff! Thumbs up! :):)
I once asked my brother-in-law how he kept his hydrangeas such a lovely blue. He ducked his head and mumbled that he peed on the soil around them. I can still recall my sister's facial expression.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I need to prune ruthlessly! I thought my IncrediBall blooms were just small because they didn’t want the Annabelles to feel bad. 😉🤓. Jackpot on old (Ancient) garden tools in my parents’ basement! I feel a wall bouquet coming to fruition, Thank you, Allen, for this in-depth lesson on such a magnificent flower! You inspire me in so many ways!
I added oak leaf hydrangeas to my garden last year. They EXPLODED in growth in a year and look fabulous in my woodland garden. I'm so pleased to learn that they're native! 😁😁😁
Very informative and entertaining, too! I thank the lady who asked about her Vanilla-Strawberry panicle hydrangea. That was helpful because I have one also, which I planted in memory of my late father who loved vanilla ice cream topped with strawberries:)
I have a couple different types of hydrangeas and my advice for people who live in cold regions (I'm in zone 4) and also if you have deer that eat your hydrangeas is to get the Panicle types. I have a vanilla strawberry that's about 4-5 years old and the deer eat every bud off that thing every winter and it blooms faithfully every year without fail! Our winter's get down to at least -22°F. They are very carefree plants; all I do is trim them and feed them some organic fertilizer every spring and they reward me with the most amazing blooms every year!
Hello P. Allen! Im so thrilled to find you here on You Tube! My deceased husband and I used to love watching your show on television! I wanted to send you a photo of my front lawn and 1940 Craftsman Bungalow in Indiana. I really wanted your advice on how to most compliment my charming abode to achieve the best curbside appeal possible, but my husband took ill and i had to be his caretaker and so I havent even watched tv since he passed in 2014 from when he lost his battle with oral cancer. Im going to subscribe to your channel and support you here on You Tube. In December 2011 my son took me to Monticello and I was soooo surprised to find all of your P.Allen Smith plants and display at the gift shop lol. Anyway, just totally enthralled to find you here on You Tube and will be following along closely. Much love to you 😊💜
This was a really good video. Not only was it extremely informative but P. allen Smith was lively and engaging. This isn’t the way I've usually seen him. When he sits at the table and drones on I find my eyes are shut. Here he was humorous and I enjoyed it. Yay. Thank you!
P.Allen you are the best. Love these educational videos. Love my New limelight. I’ve been building a privacy fence, all green. From holly to putting a new limelight in a space that is shaded more and a opening that needed to be enclosed. I live in the heights in LR so the houses are close to each other. I love the green tall fencing around the yard that is plant life and your videos have been a great help. Thank you for sharing you knowledge.
There’s nothing more exciting than seeing the little buds on my five hydrangeas begin to appear in the Spring! Next week I have a Cityline Mars Bigleaf Hydrangea (Macrophylla)arriving to make six. I’m a little obsessed so I love learning all I can about their care. Many thanks.
When I was a little girl lived in Washington DC My Aunt had the ones that fell and I would line the drive way to her car when she came home from work she had a walk way of her flowers then after she went in I would put them on her table for dinner but had to take them and put in living room to take home to our house. Hello A.P. Smith. I am 62. My DREAM is to have u Design my Two bedroom Home someday. I have been watching u for years. You Are My Favorite Home Interior, outdoor person. I Love You!, Your work. Thanks for “All“ you do as far as design. We have vibrant colors in common as well. I learned so much from watching.
OMG how did you know I have been thinking about growing a hydrangea plant?!? I live in the Stone Mountain GA area and seeing the plants in all the garden stores. They became. Ear and dear to my heart 6 years ago when I chose them for my wedding bouquet back in my hometown in Ohio. All I know they were an amazing shade of blue, had no clue there were so many varieties. After watching this video I HAVE to plant one now. 😊👍🏽😊
This has been one of my favorite videos! I did not realize different types of species that do or do not get trimmed depending on type they are. This was very informative and funny. I have also learned tree bloomed later. Was thinking in my area it was late crate myrtle bloom not hydrangea tree. This helps so much so I can go find what I’m looking for. Average flower person doesn’t usually understand unique differences 😊🌺 Thank you so much for sharing!
Great program. We lost our Limelight this year. My husband dug it out and there were no roots. In it's prime it was beautiful. Love your humor. Thank you!
Sandra, I was out in my front garden getting ready to cut back a couple of shrubs and one of them started wiggling! When I touched it - it just fell over! Something had eaten all the roots off. Finally figured it was one of the moles in my yard. I wonder if that is what happened to your bush. Some mole or gopher dined off your shrub's roots. I was told to make a circle collar out of metal or even foil and put it a couple of inches into the ground around my next shrub and I think it worked. The neighboring shrub survived. Hope that might help you, too. HUGS
So happy to have found this on youtubr. Just in time, because i just bought two of these plants. Have not had much success out here with them though. Hopefully this will help. Use to watch P Allan on tv all the time, until i quite watching tv, period. Love him. God bless.
This was great. You shine with an audience. Your lecture on hydrangea helped and I'll watch it again. Q&A was excellent. My advice is to do these lectures more often. I don't watch all that often, since I'm way up here in Canada zone 5-6, but sometimes it's relevant enough!
Jom James I do it 2x a year. I fertilized back in late March and again in late June so I am now done for the year. I’m in Zone 5 though so adjust accordingly for your USDA zone. I also use less than the amount recommended by Espoma because I also spread composted mushrooms and/or manure around the plant roots, under the mulch.
I had 8 hydrangeas in front of my house. They were 4ft tall and cone shape white flowers Every year and the flowers were gigantic. We put tomato cages on them when the leaves just started to come out. They were so big and beautiful and you couldn’t even see the cages. Towards the end of summer we had to tie them. We cut them back to about 12” in Sept. I had cut flowers all summer. (Little giants)

I on the other hand can find no gardening shows on tv - they should take the G off of HGTV - no gardening shows that have any info like you and Garden Answer give - keep the info coming - thank so much
SissieKelley714 That made our decision to ditch the Direct tv easy. They used to be our favorite channel years ago. I liked the ones that went into a neighborhood and fixed up one house a lot and the others on the block a little.

This was very educational. I have a quite a large collection of hydrangeas. The only one I don’t have are the arborescence or smooth hydrangeas. I don’t care for the very large blooms which makes them flop. I use the rose tone to fertilize them & they do well.
Allen, If you haven’t already, would you consider doing a spot on fig growing...in pots, compared to in the ground? I have a brown turkey in a pot but would like to add a delicious black mission. Also, mention dehydrating process. I am really only used to the tiny boxes of dried figs, which are delicious with morning coffee/cream. Thanks for reading.....God bless you even more.
I’m only planting dated flowers around my 1908! I just planted a huge white Hydrangea. Can’t wait for it to bloom! So I’m thinking, how about a segment on dated flowers? You know..like you could give suggestionsI? I think it would be a smash!!
Fantastic video blessed flowers wonderful information about everything im a first time hydrangea owner in a container, you have a great accent and sense of humour..X🇬🇧
I adore hydrangeas. My late mother-in-law used to tell me to bury a rusty key or nail near the root of the hydrangea to make it go blue. is that right? I love these UA-cam vids. Mr Smith is wonderful. I live in Bedfordshire, England so this is the closest I can get to Moss Mountain Farm. Wish I could visit in person. Would love to meet Mr Smith. What a wonderful, entertaining, knowledgeable gardener. He makes gardening fun. xx
Well geeze Allen I've watched your garden shows for a few years now and have always found them to be so informative and educational with tips in the garden. But this one I happen to tune in and I heard the answer to an on going problem that has plagued me and many others for much too long now and you just off the cuff thru it out there while demonstrating the different types of hydrangea. The tip had nothing to do with gardening but rather what is added to make or keep home made pickles crisp and crunchie. And the answer is ( drum roll ) lol ALLUM! I was like wow, of all the times i've experienced different things to keep cucumbers crisp but to no avail. Yes soggy limp pickles in the end every time that tasted good but yes, limp and soggy lol! Love your channel , thanks for the tip!
What's amazing I planted some trees on the hill when I was a 3 and seen them again takeing me back in time I'm remembering things from childhood break through in pschology I've seen a lot of bad things in my life
@@carpediem8752 im sorry for the late reply. I'm out of the country (live in Texas) and it's been hard to access internet. I'll give you some tips when I'm back to the states. In my channel I got some tips, but they're in Spanish, but I'll give you some tips in English too 😀
I bought purple pink hydrangeas. It was in the pot. I asked the lady how and what time is the best time to plant it. She said plant it first thing in the morning or at night (Sunset). I planted it , water the plants at night and early in the morning before the sun rises. Today I found out that the flowers are dying. I continue watering the plants despite of falling leaves.
There's such a dearth of gardening shows on TV...I'm so glad to have this to watch on youtube. Now I have a much better understanding of how to treat my hydrangeas.

mom and dad EIIie I am so gratefully the first time I have been watching Molly Friday through Sunday what plans for today AR
Michele Paccione hello the roots of all my hydrangeas, what’s the best thing to put on top to keep them covered. They keep picking up outa the soil.

@@carpediem8752 im sorry for the late reply. I'm out of the country (live in Texas) and it's been hard to access internet. I'll give you some tips when I'm back to the states. In my channel I got some tips, but they're in Spanish, but I'll give you some tips in English too 😀
Richard Vill Garden Thank you for getting back to me
I bought purple pink hydrangeas. It was in the pot. I asked the lady how and what time is the best time to plant it. She said plant it first thing in the morning or at night (Sunset). I planted it , water the plants at night and early in the morning before the sun rises. Today I found out that the flowers are dying. I continue watering the plants despite of falling leaves.
that was a lot helpful information about hydrangeas , thank you very much
Very informative. Thank you!
