Hi Mr. Smith! My husband and I live in a stone house built in 1856, on a small heavily wooded farm in the geologically gorgeous “Driftless Area” of Southwest Wisconsin. We adore your videos on UA-cam, and we’re so proud of our whimsical woodland garden that you inspired us to build behind our home. It’s creating an oasis that has a dramatic impact on our mood and general well-being, and we’re so thankful for your inspiration and education! We dream of coming to see your farm some day. When you have deer eating your favorite plants insert thin black metal poles connected with black string from which you hang bells. When the deer brush against the string as they lean down to eat or start to enter the garden bed, the bells ring which spooks the deer away.

Hello from Asheville, NC. Zone 7a. Thank you for all the wonderful garden wisdom! I love foxglove but I do think it’s toxicity is always worth mentioning. In low doses it is a medicine - digoxin - but even a small amount of plant matter can be lethal to pets or others that ingest it. That’s why the deer leave it alone.

I've had herb and medicinal gardens, and I have become inspired over the winter to bring them all together as a huge cottage garden ...most my front yard is shade ( some morning light and dappled throughout). I've planted hostas, heuchera, foxglove, hydrangea, rodadendrum a lot of others.. I have been coming home from work straight in to planting and making paths...its turning out so beautiful! I am so encouraged by the you tubers I've been watching! Thank you so much for information!

I live in Wisconsin, and have many Hostas planted all along our wooded area right behind our house. We often see deer feeding back there. I spray all my plants with the product Liquid Fence. I do spray often. Maybe every two weeks. But it doesn’t take long using an inexpensive pump pressure, continuous sprayer. Works well for me. For deer and rabbits.

Michigan here! Your videos are so wonderfully informative! We counted ten deer hanging out on the farm this Spring, about double our usual number. I don't know if it will work with so many deer, but what I usually do is grate up a couple of bars of Irish Spring soap and sprinkle it around the garden fence edges and hosta; once in Spring and once again in Summer. Apparently the deer dislike the scent because they stay away from it. I only have 4ft and 5ft fences, so the fence is not much of a deterrent for deer. I also like to use the lightweight foil holiday streamers/flag/pennants because they constantly move with any breeze and flash any light source, day or night and make a slight noise. I believe both help deter deer a great deal. Before I did these things they would decimate my vegetable gardens. I still see deer and tracks all around the farm but they avoid the gardens as do the rabbits.
    Thank you for the videos!

I miss Virginia and South Carolina, where I could plant just about anything! My challenge has been the Japanese maple. I'm not giving-up, I'll just have to get a hardier larger tree; rather than tender young trees that can't take our winters. Other people have them, so will I... eventually!

I used to listen to you on PBS when I lived in Virginia. Just to add to your collection of states, I'm now in Vermont close to Lake Champlain, Zone 5/6. In my 50's I finally was able to have a real garden and ended up building shade rock gardens because I had to work with dry shade under large trees/semi-woodland area.
Dry shade, especially clay soil, is really hard to deal with. Cinnamon fern worked for me, and heuchera and woolly thyme between stones, in ameliorated soil. And hosta of course. And native northeast woodland plants like arisaema, Solomon's Seal and Mayapple. Stone mulch (pea gravel) pulled it all together. For me the colors of perennials - like Johnson's Blue cranesbill - are more intense in the hours there are shade. Plus shade may allow you to grow mosses! Thank you for this program - I just found you on UA-cam.

What a great presentation on this very common problem.
I just moved from Michigan , where I had NO shade, to Illinois--where I have too much shade and heavy clay soil. This video is really helpful. Thanks so much

Sweet Woodruff and Solomon’s Seal are great for shade. Sweet Woodruff just finished blooming in mid May. It’s delicate white flowers that look like lace. Hostas are deer food. They’re excellent plants if your goal is to feed the deer and they are not behind a fence. That joke was funny:-)

Around here (PNW - Washington) the slugs looove hostas!! I spray 1/2 & 1/2 ammonia water when they're just coming up in the spring & it kills slug eggs. If I need to respray later I cut ammonia to 1/4. It works great!!

The real challenge isn't the shade... it the DRY SHADE! Oh my goodness. Most of those perennials like constantly moist soil. What about dry shade?

    • @elsagrace3893

Ferns do great in dry shade. Columbine. Ajuga rep tans there are a lot. Even if a plant needs moist they don’t need as much as you may think. Mulched shaded soil stays moist underneath for a long time between watering. So what if you water once every 2 weeks? Experiment.

At home here in London where I’m talking about my hostas and how to fill the shady areas of my garden. I can’t believe my luck to have your video pop up. You have a great video format here. As a beginning gardener, Gardener’s question time on Radio 4 (here in the UK) can be pitched a little towards the expert gardeners for me, but your style is very warm (charming to hear that quaint southern American accent), engaging and informative. Loved your ‘filler, spiller and thriller’ concept! I’ll be applying that method this afternoon. Thanks again for making this great video. I just subscribed as I’d like to I see and hear more from you. Good luck!

Hello from North Carolina, I am in zone 8a tooo!!! I love your info for the shade plants, I struggle every year with what to plant in the large pots on my porch, I did do creeping Jenny in there last year, it done great, and I also did the hostas, but I moved them outside, I done elephant ears in them once and they got to large, so I moved them to, so here I am again trying to figure it out.....
Thank you for these type of videos I sure need them. .

This is exactly what I needed. As a recent transplant (ha, ha), just over a year, to the UP in MI, I'm doing some new planting around our home, so it seems to be either full shade and then full sun as the sun travels around the house. I used to garden in zone 5b-6a in PA and now it is 4a. I'm having lots of fun learning! Thanks again for a great vlog!!
