Great review! - I have all the Meater products and LOVE them. The problem is that it uses a radio signal - once you enclose that radio in a steel BBQ or oven, you are shielding the probe from the receiver - moving the receiver slightly can really help with reception. - There is still no replacement for a pocket instant-read thermometer. - Cheers!

Thanks for sharing. I recently did a video on the MeatStick which did well in the bbq. I still prefer the MEATER though. Thanks for watching.

Nice video thanks - I have gone thru the same exercise. My conclusion is - the last thing I need when I want quality time cooking, either alone or with friends, is another IT gadget that has an app that I need to keep looking at, so I use the pocket thermometer - in fact, I just ordered a new one that's is supposed to be a bit more "instant"

Instant read thermometers are in a different league to other thermometers. Should always have both in my opinion. Like have the meater probs in the meats while cooking to monitor temps and have alarms but have the instant read to check probe tenderness and temps in different areas of the meat. Once you learn your cooker/smoker and general times for meats you should only really need an instant read. Also I would be more inclined to spend more on an instant read.

WiFi range sounds as if it could be better, however, there are WiFi range extenders (some external) which can improve reception outside in your garden (yard) - they should also improve the speed for any other devices you want to use there.
As for the poor battery life, I would suggest an inexpensive rechargable power bank, which are also great for topping up your phone when you are out and about. Even the more powerful ones are not that much bigger than a smartphone. I have one which is even capable of powering my laptop, and it fits in my pocket.

Have you tried the MEATER or other wireless thermometers in a ceramic BBQ instead of metal?
A metal BBQ is essentially a shitty Faraday cage and you're gonna get bad signal from inside to outside even with "extended range" Bluetooth. Same reason your phone signal is spotty in elevators.

Its a bit pricey, but on par with the price of the meater block...
But im a big fan of fireboard.
Its kinda the middleground. Wired to unit physically, holds 6 probes if needed, long lasting internal battery. It hooks to wifi and has an app with multiple types of alarms (app alarm, or sms or both). Depending on unit options it can also control a fan for maintaining a specific temp in bbq.

Good job, Tom. I’ve had a Thermapen for several years, but have been seduced by ads for Meaters. My routine with my Thermapen has never failed me. It looks like a Meater might, based on those range issues that I saw in their ads and you validated. Looks like you saved me about $100 and a lot of frustration. Plus a couple ruined dinners, and falling back on some frozen burritos. A man has to prepare for his limitations.

Yeah I have a playlist. I also did a review on the MeatStick 4X which have 4 sensors. It may be a little more of what you are looking for. Here’s the link of the playlist with more videos:

Great review, and the only one talking important stuff too. No usb-c and no main unit internal battery charging? What a joke in 2022. Now I can get the Weber Connect for my Kamado (as it is half the price) and wait for the engineers from both the companies to take their heads out of their assess realising this is 21st century and accepting a reality that usb-c is here since 2014.

@@tomwadek Hi. Seems YT removed my post, because it contained a link to the e-shop. I have ordered stand-alone version, because the table model is so much more expensive. Instead of that, I have ordered separete kind of an industrial table, with the serving plate and will just add a cutting board. Here's at least a picture ....

@@PetrKrenzelok I wish they still offered the start system on the standalone model. I agree with you, the table version is really pricy but I like that ignition system. My buddy has one and in my opinion, the summit kamados are the best grills out there. Great idea with the side table. You saved a lot of money and got the same function. I’m happy for you. One day I’ll join the club too lol.
