This medieval fair was a great example why the backscabbard is perfect for certain situations. Just before you walked in the gate I had gotten rid of my sword - because walking through crowds with a sword on your belt can become a real hindrance as the crowds build up, and keeping it secure when it's on your back is super easy - possibly even more secure than it is on your waist.
Backscabbards aside though, it was great to finally meet up face to face - hopefully we can find the time to catch up again near future!

Great seeing you around, miss your content. I thought it was interesting when it was mentioned that the garb was crusades themed, as my initial thought on seeing it was the headdress had an middle east look to it. Any thoughts of putting up your re-enactment group activities on the channel?
@Nate V I just mention it because you said I can pick on you (German reenactor here who is once a year in Israel for the reenactment of the battle of hattin) . the leather bracers aren't authentic. Your trousers are not either, the legs should be separated and way tighter. In addition the coat de arms should go till the middle of your lower leg at least, but it looks self made, so continue with that :) . The Gambeson also should be way longer and - I tried it, trust me - not be black. I got a heatstroke because of that after only a 15 km walk in Israel ( still finished the other 10 km though). your headwear is very nice ! The shoos look way to overload and not turn sewn. Wooden pattens would be a great addition.

This _really_ pisses me off. For years, I've been using, and suggesting, the exact same technique - Yet every time I would mention it on some video where some "expert" was insisting that you literally can't draw a sword from a back-scabbard (Invariably by trying to draw a longsword from their right shoulder with their right hand), virtually everyone in the comments would dogpile me insisting I was an idiot or a fraud. Seriously, the amount of abuse I've sat through on the subject, and the actual blatant *_anger_* of the people hurling it would astonish you. So, really, where have you been for the last 10 years when I needed something to refer these people to? I'm going to hold you personally responsible for your absence...
I love these videos where shad is talking to another enthusiast. You can see the inner child like excitement start to come out.

Andrzej Sapkowski mentions basically Nate V tecnique in his novels. Pulling the belt forward and drawing the sword.
Is that in the Witcher novels?
@@chrispaton3489 i don't know if he wrote other novels to which they're referring to, but yes, Andrzej Sapkowski did indeed write the witcher books

Geralt of Rivia is a character who typically wears his sword across his back. In the books, it is described the very same way as Nate's technique of pulling the belt and adjusting the sheath.

I think it's obvious; the best back scabbard is one that simply holds the sword while the sword itself is completely wrapped up in a long cloth ribbon attached to the bottom of the grip. Especially if that sword is a gigantic single-edged sword that can be compressed down into a reasonably-sized sword by yelling, "Bankai!"
When I saw Nate’s original video, I figured a single edged sword could probably avoid the throat cutting problem, like a Katana or Messer.
A leather band around the neck would do the trick.
Just happened upon this channel. As reinactor myself I really appritiate what I've found. Having seen many duals the back scabbard does seem to be very functional.
I wish I could do medieval re-enactments, but I'm Canadian without a major city in my county, so there's no armored combat groups like you'd see in Europe or Australia

2 Geeks just geeking out about some amazing topics! And thanks VosperCDN - had to take a bit of an extended break, but it's good to pop back in every now and again for things like this while I'm getting everything else in order.
These interactions are great and that medieval fair looks like loads of fun! Hope the graphic novel production is going relatively smoothly and excited to read it!
The simple sling of Nate I see more of adventurer starting out, a scout for armies, or spies. Simple and keeping everything to a minimum.
Shad’s sheath I can see as more of a experienced adventurer, Berserker that’s not afraid of taking a strike to strike down harder, or Noble’s wanting to show off their wealth with the scabbard on their back being extremely ornate like the guard, grip, pommel, and blade itself.
I still prefer Shadow of Mordor’s hollowed out center sheath going for about a third the length of the blade. Though I know that would be difficult to clean of mud far more than Shad’s because of the stiff edges meant to hold the blade better.
That state of wealth is also reflected in their armours, or lack thereof. Nate is like the new guy ready for their first adventure, Shad is the one who came back with the loot and invested it in gear.
the only major issue with the SoM scabbard is that the sword is not completely protected, with the third of the length of the blade still exposed to the elements. water could seep in, rust could form, and the sword wouldn't be able to stay in a properly maintained, oiled state for the entirety of the blade. it's practical for other purposes though, especially for quick deployment i think.
@@artezui indeed. It would require more maintenance than a normal scabbard. But it would also keep your sword out of waist deep waters your crossing at the cost of being more exposed to rain. But having to crawl around it would also keep it out of the dirt, but you’d have to be aware of the hilt to make sure it doesn’t catch on anything overhead in tight places.
For as cool as it is looks, his sword draw right next to his neck gives me chills every time :/
Easy to solve though.
Might not be a problem if you wear a gorget.
Maybe one of those stylish pauldrons with a wing or something, to protect the neck & get that asymmetrical look

I really likes nates design. It uses the body alot which helps with the drawing. Mechanically sound.

One point I would add is sense of style. While many things are done for efficacy of use, but many more things were made out of style (male endowed armor). I would consider Shad’s back scabbard is more stylish and awe inspiring. Nate’s is far simpler and at times easier but isn’t as dramatic.
I respect Shad's creativity, but visually, it's a no for me.
Any excuse to have Nate back on the channel would be a good one in my opinion. What a swell guy

Nate, from what I’ve heard, something that could help your kit is to have your belt at your natural waist, where a cuirass would end, rather than at your hips.

I will say... To keep the peasentry under the radar. The best back scabbard is the one with the poor seem work and maybe a pint or 5 of ale in the peasentry to keep them in the peak fighting state.
Love your work. I also had a video idea that came to my head. What would be the best scabbard placement for a creature that used swords but had twice the length in their arms (with matching flexibility throughout the arm for fun) or maybe a scabbard for a person lacking an arm. Since you do have the limited range of motion for combat. But war never said it had to be clean. Is there any stories about soldiers rising above that infliction to tell their stories? (Doubt it considering... But it's something I'm sure you'd find fun ways to play with it.)
I'm looking back at old videos because of missing Nate.... AND I CAN'T BELIEVE I FOUND WHEN SHAD MET HIM.
I would like to see this tested with the Kriegsmesser. The curved blade would facilitate an easier draw and no worries on neck cut.

When I'd go hiking to go practice in the woods I'd tie my sword to my bag so I could drop the bag and draw at the same time.

One reason I believe in back scabbards, at least partly, is because of a mention of one being worn by a Chinese emperor in a story. The story revolved around an assassin trying to kill him, and the emperor was struggling to remove the sword from his back in the heat of the moment while hiding behind pillars.
The videos coming out of that event are awesome. It feels even more educational.

You should experiment with the strapping with a regular scabbard or sheath. Maybe mimick the various slings used for firearms, using buckles and fasteners commonly used during the medieval period. You've already hit on strapping for your custom scabbard, I would think that the strapping would be cheaper to customize than the scabbard, and maybe some people might have gone that route, if they did sling it behind them.
Maybe the lack of artwork is because explorers used it mostly, and few artists followed them to see it? I wonder though, it is odd. You'd think more than a few would recognize the benefits for certain situations.

glad you brought up the distribution of weight when a long heavier sword is on your back. it doesn't cause as many problems if a sword like that is on your side.
This whole video felt like a fantasy cutscene haha.
Loving seeing more on drawing from the back and i like how nate's style seems to be an evolotion of something that was down in the past as well.
Shad still seems to have the market on the big swords cornered but that other technique looked very achiveable and slick and probally was why most people never went to a full scabard because it was the low cost alternative.
I have even could see a variation in armour either on the neck of the chest piece or the helmet for something like a slightly sturdier/cut resistant panel yo allow you to draw with less risk to your own throat.
And i must admit that brigadine piece is still thoughly amazing i had an inclin it might have been that piece not because i could tell from the piece itself but i noticed the very shad based set up and the trousers were quite the clue that you were set up for comfort and i know you mentioned that was an area the foam pieces exceled at...but it only genrated an inclin that it might be that and was cool to see someone who is an also very into sowrds and armour not notice the difference as well a great live test caught on camera.
Does this mean you can hold 3 swords efficiently? Three sword style time.

The best back scabbard, would be one turned upside down with a system to keep the sword in place, that can easily release the blade.

Sad I missed the mediaeval reenactment, was awesome seeing when I was there a few years ago. Interesting conversation, have you looked into scabbard the main character used in the shadow of Mordor? I have always liked that concept.

when i did saxon reenactment, my sword was quote short, something like 2 ft something, the scabbard had an over shoulder baldric attached, i foind that i could wear the sword at the nape of the neck , draw it from back easily, a small leather thing attached bottom to belt where the tip ended, and could be worn with cloak and was hidden, even surprised someone when i dropped bow as they charegd in and drew sword which they didnt realise i had. Im surprised Shad doesnt like using quivers on the back, he always side wears quovers, if he uses a shorter bow and shorter drawlength, and shorter arrows, very easy to draw from back, and fast.
What a crossover!
For REAL long swords, you also have the "two points sling scabbard". You carry it on your shoulder, you take it off the shoulder to draw (it's actually quite fast to do).
Such a nice place! I’ll have to give Nate a check and all, but I do have to say I’d go with the classic Shabbard.

I don't have the book - Bronze Age Warfare by Osgood et al - to hand but I recall that scabbards on baldrics were common in the Bronze Age.
I have leather straps for a backscabbard that is very uncomfortable since it is a 2 piece like Nate's. Without an extra strap that goes under your other arm, that style isn't comfortable and it SLIDES a ton and rides the neck. A 3 piece strap for a backscabbard is nice. Separately to what Shad is saying around 9:25, Baldrics a GREAT for weight balance, stability, and easy movement. Separate note, Faires and cosplay w/ large weapons is just inherently difficult.
I don’t know if anyone has said it yet, but the way that he pulls on the belt and draws is exactly how it’s described in the first Witcher short stories.

Some great comparisons here. I actually do Star Wars cosplay as an armored Sith with a lightsaber blade kept tucked under my belt when not in use during conventions. I've found many of the same problems with belt hanging in crowded places, so I might actually try a shoulder hanging sheath for my next one.
Nate V’s design is far more practical and simple. Think it’s more likely to have been done than Shad’s design. It’s limitation can easily be mitigated with a single edged sword. Also sheathing two swords on the back seems more practical with this design.

It just occurred to me that modern mentalities around carrying guns were probably similar to what ancient people thought about carrying their weapons.
For modern guns, either conceal or open carrying handguns, or soldiers carrying rifles in combat situations, the purpose is self defense and quick response. In life threatening situations, seconds matter. For that purpose, a gun must be easy to draw, in a safe position, and ready to use, as quickly as possible. That means handguns are usually kept around the waist in a holster, woth a round in the chamber. In combat situations, soldiers keep rifles slung forward (administrative carry, quicker to get to a ready position than slung over the back), or carry them with the muzzle down. In less life threatening situations, like hunting and moving from place to place, rifles are slung over the back for comfort.
Why wouldn't ancient peoples think the same way? This would explain why ancient soldiers would more likely keep swords slung to their side, rather than to their back, in a scabard, if possible. It makes the weapons easier to get to, quicker to draw, quicker to get to a ready state, in a safe position, for the purpose of defending themselves. As much as back scabards are cool, they're less efficient for personal defense than carrying at the waistline, and as such, back scabards would be more common for less life threatening situations and for travelling.
Guiding the sword in with the other hand is exactly how Geralt does it in Witcher 3
And don't worry about the outfit being a bit anachronistic. It's sort of a fantasised version of wearing grandfathers pants with the new state of the art armor

Hey Shad, I was thinking you should do a review of all the different swords in the Bleach anime. They have some crazy designs, and a lot of people are rewatching it now since new episodes are coming out.
Would love to see you try to get both working on the same person at the same time, for smaller and larger sword options for adventurer.

Do a back scabbard using electro magnets. You can have a release mechanism in the gauntlet that deactivates the magnets when it connects to the hilt.
Not sure how well that would fly in most fantasy settings. _Science_ fantasy on the other hand it would be right at home in. I remember Blake from RWBY actually just wears a magnet on her back that her scabbard is attached to.
Shad actually did some tests with magnets. The results were; while it does work to a degree the magnet would have to be rediculously strong to resist the forces of movement. Espsically twisting forces.
