My wife and I have been touring on an SDGT for two years and 25,000 miles. Before that, we had two S1000XRs. In the GT's favor is that it's lighter and a little lower; not the drama of always threatening to tip over during slow speed riding. Fully loaded two-up, an XR is a real handful for a short inseam rider. Once past 10 degrees, it's going over. The bags are small, but adequate. After 40 years touring together, we know how to pack light and don't mind visits to the laundromat on a week long tour. More of a challenge in cold weather, if extra layers are needed.
I added bar backs to make the ride more upright. My wife doesn't complain about the rear seat, although it's very small. Addition of a 40L top case serves as extra baggage and a backrest.
Performance is insane. Plenty of power for passing and high speed cruising. Two-up, the wheelie suppression barely works. I installed an aftermarket windshield, which helps with weather protection, but overall, there's not much. I wish it had brakes as good at the XR's, though.

Just in the process or buying a 2019 GT, rode the SAS back to back with the GT, my head wanted the SAS, my heart wanted the GT 😊👍

I'm an SDGT owner and I definitely wouldn't want to tour on the R. This thing makes total sense on the wind protection alone. Sacrifice a tiny bit of sportiness for the ability to comfortably cruise at 150kmh in any weather conditions. I'm sure my wife appreciates the fact that I chose the GT when we're 2up as well

I'm owning a 2016 GT. Now it's having 90000km on the ODO-meter. I have to admit that the original seat are way to unconfortable. But the power part seats are perfect to me and my wife.
This year alone we did 6000km together and we both have no complains...
I bought this bike because it is no pure tourer. The sport tourer gens are quite right and sometimes I'd like to have it even sportier.
So please do not complain about some comfort missing. If you need it, get a real tourer!

I became a fan of your work here on UA-cam. All your videos about these marvelous machines we love, is made with care and of a high professional presentation level. Your speech skills and opinions are golden. It is a real pleasure to watch and listen everything. With that said, I post now my view on this bike. I own a 2021 edition and it is an absolute joy to ride! People can tell a lot of stories but that is a pure fact. It’s not a touring bike. It can lead you to do long distances on a fast pace, but it doesn’t becomes comfortable as distances are get simply devoured as you keep on riding it along all type of road asphalt. Certainly not comfortable for two. But if you intend to go on a large distance alone, it has all the arguments to provide a safe and fulfilling trip. You just have to enhance the wind shield replacing the original for a more protective one and there are some serious proposals on the aftermarket, which from my point of view add more value to the bike than the opposition of that effect, although it can happen also if you don’t choose it properly. The “R” is not my thing anymore and it is almost the same psp and I like the 23 capacity of the gas tank, plus the protection it provides- by its large proportions -to the rider, is fabulous. For touring, its a hard nut to crack. The market is full of better offers for that purpose. Almost every manufacturer have a better alternative for it. Even KTM itself. The SDGT is a wonderful bike for unpretentious track days events, or to do some short or mediums distances alone, with luggage, on work or just for pleasure, out for the weekend, it will perform perfectly, I’m sure, because I’ve done it already and it is 100% the bike I choose. For longest rides my bike of choice is the BMW 1250 RT. To stroll along the countryside roads, or going to the beach zipping on a nice and fresh drink by the Ocean, I’ll go on every two wheels I can get available but for that, and other programs like that, my bike of choice is the Triumph Bonneville T120.
Looking forward to tour next video, I send you my best regards. Be well✌️✌️

01:15, that's the money shot right there, it looks awesome! If only it would come with a center stand, even an aftermarket one, then it would probably be the ultimate sports tourer.

    I've got a 2020 GT
The ergo power parts seat is definitely better than standard and great when cold as its heated , both rider and pillion. Another thing is bar risers which I've installed, they make a big difference including angled back closer to you
Also saving your backside when touring if you change damping from sport to street the comfort level improves a lot. Leave sports damping for the mental twisty bursts or out for a Sunday hoon

Great review as usual mat . I’m glad i watched till the end to hear your closing summary because at the start i thought you were going to rate it above the 1290 SAS which i’ve already watched and you were clearly blown away by that bike perhaps partly because you were on a longer holiday type test on that one . My takeaway is the SAS is a more polyvalent bike and would therefor be the bike to own if , like me , your a one bike owner

My feelings about the sports tourer category are that far too many manufacturers think that this type of bike is a tourer with some sporting pretensions. My view is that it should be a bike which behaves like a sports bike, but improves comfort and ergonomics and has the capability of taking a decent amount of luggage.
Sports bikes nowadays are designed entirely for track days and so have virtually no possibility of being used on the road, while touring bikes are usually lardy and soft.Nor do ADVs interest me. I love riding off road, but I'd rather do so on a dedicated enduro machine. Big ADVs are simply too big for proper off roading, smaller ADVs aren't really up to fast road work.A big ADV may be capable of going fast, but can it get to knee-down antics? And can you really get properly sporting tyres on an SA-S?
I'm perfectly capable of modding a bike's comfort for all day riding, but I really don't see how an SA-S is going to be capable of matching a dedicated road bike in properly sporting riding, so you'd have to make up for the sportiness by generous use of the wrist, so it's still not really sporting, is it? It's just ludicrously fast for an ADV.
There really aren't very many bikes that you can tour on, and the next day take on something like the Gorges de Verdon, or blast across the Auvergne.
Not having ridden the SDGT, I suspect it is going to be what I want.

Ive put gel pads in the PP seat and raised the bars. Austria to the Uk in one day with no issues. It will stay with sports bikes in the alps and then cruise home at 100mph. All with no drama and in comfort.

A fantastic bike, sadly it seems the great screen gets blurry once on the move 🤣 Loved the review and the passion.
BTW I'm a 1290 Super Adventure S owner and I cannot recommend it enough. This engine is nuts when you're alone and the bike is really fine 2-up. I just don't understand how KTM can produce such a marvel of a bike and not manage to give it a proper saddle...

Always enjoy your reviews, and as I live in the south east of France, find your perspectives often very relevant to local riding.
Having tried this one, I wonder if you still feel the multi v4 is the pick of the bunch for “sporty” bikes with a touch of comfort?
I do like the idea of a superduke, but d’ya reckon should I switch out my multi v4 for it, or for the super adventure?

    • @AVweb
      @AVweb 10 місяців тому

It is fairly upright. But that's good on a level or slightly sloping away because it won't get that deep lean which tips over GSs an XRs. But it will tip to the hight side if you're not careful.

GT is a great bike but for some reason--I am going to grab Multistrada PIKES PEAK--which keeps me in a 17" wheel with maybe the best match up to the GT--but slightly better accommodations for the wife. It's "her bike". That not happening till November but I will keep a watch out for the Gen 3 GT which I would have likely opted for. We shall see...

    • @leventeyuboglu4501
      @leventeyuboglu4501 Рік тому

I have the standar tuono, decided to it after I rode the factory and found it is not far off of a regular sportbike. However handlebar riser and a higher screen on the standart v4 doesn't create a perfect tourer. It still has racy engine and frame, sitting on high up as well. I beleive this bike won't fit in to touring segment at all.It also needs 1200/1250 cc engine to fullfill original purpose that is designed for imho. If 1000rpm less, 20% more midrange torq than I stop complaining :) And this is coming from a person who has all range sports bikes in his history and hating heavy tourers Getting older tho :) I want to be lazy with my throttle hand and left foot. 1290 sas can give that. However 2021 1290 gt didnt give me the thrill and there is not much torq that you will want to tell everyone

Thanks for your video. KTM's have got so much going for them in the engine department, but are let down by their horrible looks and paint schemes, and of course the price tag, which could only be afforded by a real Duke. What is means is they will only ever be appealing to a group of people with certain tastes.

      Hi Stephen,
If I may, I bought a Ultimate charger and, on par with the Scottoiler, was the best addition to my 1290 SA-S. Always putting the battery on charge instantly got me rid of any electronic niggles (default or suspension error). Seems the chips are really sensitive to the electric stability.
So if you fell in love with the engine, just don't hesitate much. 3 years ownership and no issues what so ever which is way better than my previous BMW.
      Regards, Corentin

KTM. Always feels unfinished. The right parts, all the parts work well, but just not in the right places for the rider or the proper shape for that matter. Then there is that “Lost In Space Robot” look to the thing and a radical Orange color thing going on. Hmm, I just cant get there, because I need to look at the thing.

Gotta say this is one ugly bloody thing. One of the joys of bike ownership is every day walking past my bike and loving its looks, but Im afraid this one would have to have a cover on it
