    OOH what fun! For $100 I'd go to my local secondhand shop (Clothes Mentor) and I'd probably leave with 6 or 7 items and a new to me handbag from a mid-range brand. I always shop second hand first because of...
    1. the price is so much better than retail
    2. kinder to the environment
    3. support my local businesses
    4. wide range of brands/styles all in one place

    I’m on a year of only buying charity shop (thrift shop) clothes. I don’t buy online though coz I’m lumpy and bumpy and I need to try stuff on. I’ve managed to find some nice really pieces and got loads of compliments on a cute red floral dress I got for a wedding recently.

    I love this!! I live in Canada, and the thrift stores near me are very cheap - I was able to spend less than 100$ and come out with a vintage sweater, a vintage jean jacket, A dress, and a few curtains (I use them as sewing fabric, so I'm getting a few more clothing items and pillows out of them lol, mainly cosplay). Only about 80$ for all of that, and it's better quality than most clothing stores nowadays, let alone Shien or Temu!!

    It would be so interesting to see if you made a video where you followed your own style, and bought & tried on 2nd hand pieces that are similar to fast fashion/sustainable items that you found & wanted to buy :) sort of to show how easy it is to find current season alternatives 2nd hand! & i really liked this video concept, amazing work!!

    This is not meant to be a call out at all, I just think you should look into the ethics of mass produced crochet because even at $100-ish dollars for a top, depending on several factors that seems low. Because crochet has to be done by hand. It's impossible (at least right now, maybe someday in the future) for a machine to crochet, so every garment or item you've ever seen was done by a person stitch by stich, and paying someone a living wage for that labor, not to mention the skill, is not going to be cheap at all. That's why there is an argument about crochet fast fashion being the least ethical in an already ethically dubious (to be charitable) industry.

      also it’s worth mentioning that A LOT of ‘crochet’ garments that are sold by fast fashion companies are actually knitted to look like crochet. not all, and knitting especially like that still takes time but it’s worth noting because not everything that says ‘crochet’ is actually crochet - it’s usually not.

    • @pinkapoppy
      @pinkapoppy 2 місяці тому

      like the last top in the video does not look like crochet - it’s incredibly small so if it was crochet it would take 4x as long to make compared to other garments, but it very much looks like knitting

I'm genuinely curious, though, about what you think about the sustainability of buying things secondhand from Zara or H&M if they're items that were never worn, like in your video. This is a great idea! We just went thrifting and each got some shoes and my husband got a leather jacket. We totalled up the retail value of our purchase and it came in around $2000 - we spent less than a tenth of that! Some of the shoes were in like new condition 🎉 I just watched your video on intentional thrift shopping and am also happy to say 90% of what we bought was on our wishlists - including this amazing pair of Ugg wooden mules. Comparing the retail value to our purchase price feels similar to what you’re doing here and really amped up the dopamine for us in a way that didn’t feel wasteful or guilt laden!

    Can we please stop pretending that ‘plus size’ can be sustainable? It’s literally more material and labour consumption by a group of consumers who are already overconsuming in other ways.
    We rag on about overconsumption in fashion, homewares/decor, merch, toys, fucking *books*, but refuse to acknowledge that overconsumption of food is also a financial and environmental issue.
    And this is ignoring the knockon effects of food overconsumption on things like increased material and labour costs in the products that the food overconsumers use, their increased use of medical infrastructure and resources, their increased energy demands (because heavy people are like heavy things and require more energy to move), and the mental, emotional and physical burden that they impose on others (ie, damaging the backs of hospital staff, not being able to look after their children properly, needing extra mental bandwidth to include in events and outings, and possibly needing to be cared for intimately by others).
    Oh, and fast fashion and fast food are natural analogues of each other because fast food isn’t cheaper, is of worse quality and messes with your hunger cues to make you overconsume.
    Ah, and it’s possible to overconsume both healthy food and otherwise sustainable fashion too, so there’s no get out of jail card there either.
    Every female space inevitably ends up in the quagmire of fat acceptance and this needs to be nipped in the bud. Obesity rates are rising and using obesity as an excuse for other unsustainable activities is killing the environment at unprecedented rates.
    This has to stop, and notable figures need to stop ignoring this pressing issue in the name of ‘being kind’. No, you’re being cowardly.

    •  2 місяці тому +1

      the assumption that people are plus size because they eat more + eat fast food is incredibly fatphobic and uninformed. "the quagmire of fat acceptance" do you hear yourself ? how dare you treat fat people needs' like they're burdens. it sounds like you know nothing about fatness and are using your ignorance as a weapon to harm others with. you should read about the roles of genetics in body weight, the troubled history of the BMI, the ineffectiveness of dieting and many more scientifically debated ideas that disprove the vitriolic and nonsensical comment you just left.

    • @lawliet6910
      @lawliet6910 2 місяці тому +2

      I disagree with pretty much all of this and I wish I could have my time back from reading it 🤣Here's my hot take: you're just really bigoted against plus-size people and you're using environmentalism to justify the bigotry. I doubt you're bringing this kind of energy in protests against companies that are committing actual crimes lmao. I mean, seriously, I would call you a troll account but I think you're just mean? Also, your idea of how weight gain happens seems incomplete at best, actively misinformed at more accurate. I do not want to be a part of any movement that decides to police how much a random human being is allowed to eat?? Like hello, you sound so goofy and mean for that
      FURTHER, what's your argument for how skinny people overconsume Shein clothes at absurd rates because the clothes fit their bodies with minimal effort? Skinny people have always been the primary overconsumers of fast fashion. I recommend saving the "hard work" of your "activism" for after we've solved the issue of skinny rich people VASTLY overconsuming and throwing away everything once they've gotten one instagram picture/video :) cheers!

    • @user-vk1pz7ry1l
      @user-vk1pz7ry1l 2 місяці тому +15

      Don't make it about plus size people if everybody is at fault. The most sustainable diet is growing everything yourself. Since this is barely possible, the most sustainable and accessible diet is a vegan diet. Meat consumption and rain forest de-forestation for farm animals' crop is one of the biggest contributor to the climate crisis.
      THIS is what needs to be said and done. It's not a single group of people. It's most of the global north. Please don't shame people into believing they're less worthy in a society. The problem is multi-dimensional, not even mentioning the lack of health-care or the governments failure to provide affordable, healthy food

    • @lawliet6910
      @lawliet6910 2 місяці тому +1

      UA-cam can keep removing my comments all it wants, or you can keep reporting them, but respectfully, you should educate yourself and stop being goofy
      Skinny people overconsume fast fashion at higher numbers because they treat clothes as accessories to the body to be shown off
      Consuming more food doesn't necessarily equate to a higher weight
      You are a corny GOOFBALL. Goofy goofy goofy
      CHEERS x
