Shark Tank's Barbara Corcoran On Why She Won't Invest In Rich Kids | IGNITION 2018
Wow, I love her personality, she’s very honest and humble. This is the side we don’t get to see on shark tank.
*_I’m out, and for that reason I’m Barbara_*
?!
You're here??
Bob, the Lisa Guerrero obsessed guy
_Bob McCoy Lisa Guerro much
omg so many people are copying my comment :(
I’m now rich, I came from NOTHING. I’m the injured kid with ego to prove everyone wrong. She’s absolutely dead on accurate. For me it isn’t about the money, it’s about proving to the world that I’m worth more than dirt, which is all the value I was told I was worth. To me it’s about winning. Money means almost nothing.
Absolutely brother
Spot on
True, Its never really about the money 😂. I have 3 succesful companies and 2 more still in recovery from the pandemic. But if you see me or my close business friends. We all dress like bums outside of meetings and eat cheap food. It kinda becomes your comfort zone.
That's real
Rich kids usually don’t have the drive and determination to build a business from the ground up.
"I'm too good to do that, I should be the manager here with a 15% mark up salary b/c of my aptitude for success".
Says the poor skrublet.
Mr Daddy Please Spank Me And how is that ignorant?
Greg Caesar what makes you think I’m poor?
That's not bad tho, with the right intentions and right partnership a rich kid can fund a less fortunate kid and they can finesse. Just depends though, it needs to be the right people.
She is preaching. Love the way she thinks
Happy not to know you!
She is one of the best reader of potential in Shark Tank
She could have kept talking on and on, I was just mesmerized by her talking. She is really amazing.
I don’t invest in rich kids, but will happily invest “with” rich kids since their connections gets you into deals other people don’t.
krazieman69 That’s the smart thing
She’s a business woman at the end of the day 🤷🏽♀️
No one:
Barbara: “Thank God my kids have dyslexia.”
Struggling in life is what makes you successful, and a good human being.
I just saw her say that, Yikes, she's happy their dyslexic, its nothing wrong, but she actually said she got lucky, wtf? She makes it sound like if they weren't dyslexic then she would disown them.
I get what her take on that was. I grew up with a severe speech impediment and the drive it took for me to properly enunciate a sentence is the same drive I have towards achieving a goal. It was a struggle and speaking normal is sometimes people take for granted.
DeadOverlord666 you are missing the point
You all take things very literally. So much confusion and hate is being generated over one phrase.
Essentially, she has much higher respect in children who struggled, came from a point of being at the bottom, and yet are pulling themself to the top vs those who were given the money, the connections, the capital and bam, had a business
Go ahead and yell at me, but I am gonna say this anyway: she is also a woman in a world run by men. Not only did she grow up poor, she also grow up in a disadvantageous society.
She is awesome.
houchi69 hate that you have to preface this in order to no offend anyone. FREEDOM OF SPEECH. just because you hear/read it, doesn't mean it has to offend you.
houchi69 oh please. Millions of us have had similar family background stories, that doesn't qualify anyone to judge the rich kid's ambitions. Very presumptuous don't you think!? I had been surrounded in my lifetime with not so bright individuals But, they became wealthy Realators. No one bragged about their success to the world as Barbara does. They helped raise spirits of the Poor, the Intermediate & yes, the already made Rich kid that wanted to join into the (NAR).
Christian Marion LOL😂tell that to a Liberal friend you may be acquainted with. Good luck!
63% of real estate agents are women. Where's the disadvantage?
@@jshepard152 that wasn't the case 30 years ago.
They have money and for that reason, I'm out
😂
Wow, 13 year old kid means she gave birth at the age of 56.
Sam Zirkiev her 13 year old was adopted
Jennifer Rook-Green that’s what they want you to belief
@@hugolols55 huh?
Yes. It explains the birth defects.
@@johnmadsen37 wooooowwwww
When she said "Thank god my kids are dyslexic" my respect for this woman went up 100%. Like, I've never seen someone say something so controversial in such a passionate way
Make no mistake... it's a cope. Not a complete one- she is absolutely convinced of what she's saying, but if she could buy a pill for a dollar... that would cure her childrens' dyslexia- you bet your a$$ she'd purchase it and give it to her kids.
And who among us wouldn't buy a pill to cure their childs learning disability. I love Barbara she's very honest.@@melissachartres3219
@@melissachartres3219 true. I think its bc she also have the resource to let her children focus on certaint things. If this happen to poor family i dont know how the kid will go school and learn etc
I agree with Barbara.
Struggle creates strength and endurance.
My first business partner was a rich kid, huge mistake. I'm doing better now and working on my own things on the side I'd rather make it myself than have her dads money hanging over my head.
My dad worked at a place that was owned by three people who won the lottery together a few years before. It was millions. The manager ended up overtaking the company in the end. You should’ve tried that method.
What she's saying isn't simply RICH vs POOR. it's more of an argument against the negative qualities that often come as a side effect of being rich versus the qualities that sometimes come with being poor.
alex level it depends on lots of things
7 rich kids disliked this

Jémarc I will never make it to be rich and I disliked her OPINION of rich kids. Your parents did very good by you. Give them a hug!
"Tom got rejected from all of the best schools ... and he graduated almost top of his class at Columbia."
Lol, what? This doesn't make sense, and for that reason, I'm out.
Henry R She’s probably saying he got rejected from all of the top schools at first. He may have gone to Columbia for grad school, not undergrad.
@@evanperilstein5308 But she said he is 24, meaning he would still be in grad school.
JoseBetacourt5 depends on the program
Ight I’ma head out
JoseBetacourt5 maybe he graduated late ?? She did say he had learning disability that might’ve held him back a little bit
She’s not lying. Rich kids are very entitled, and believe they know everything while we from middle class don’t have that luxury. We have to work hard to get anywhere in life.
My dad always told me, “people like us have to work twice as hard to get to where we want to be” and that’s true.
Honestly, I rather have grown up how I did, then grow up rich. I’m able to appreciate things more, because I never had them. Shout out to all my working class Americans out there! We have the best lives, and live in the best damn country in the world! ✊🏼🇺🇸
I'm generally inclined to agree with you, but that's not how all rich kids think and act. I promise I don't think that way.
You are so full of shit. Middle class Americans have a better life than 75% of the world. The opportunity in this countey is insane. Please stop acting like your life was so hard because mommy and daddy didn't throw money at you everytime you asked
I know a lot of people don’t like Barbara, but I freaking love her!!!!
Very well said! Hustle vs. Hand me downs
She's not wrong tbf
John Dylan eh somewhat but she is talking about shark tank rich kids. But sometime the rich kids make the biggest business and hire many others.
I have new respect for Barbara
I’ve watched this multiple times and just uplifts me and gives me inspiration. I’m not even aspiring to be an entrepreneur.
This honest stream of consciousness is really something
Seems like the interviewer was a rich kid with the right connections.
It's interesting to see how income of parents can impact you as a child. My parents didn't have money until my dad sold the land he worked really hard to keep after 15 years of hard work. He was up til 3am and would get up at 5 on some days. He didn't get money until I was going into the adult world, so I never felt like a rich kid, I just felt I had a hardworking dad who bled for his work and it took years to have something to show for it. At age 20, that's inspiring to me and I hope to do the same rather than get a handout now
She should have just said “yes i invest in my kids’ businesses because its my money and i can burn through it as i please.”
Thats what Kevin would say if that question was asked to him, lmao
She is "old-school" and frank. Thumbs up!
Very good point. Struggles are the best lesson
I love barbara she speaks facts! Its no better feeling then making it when you started from nothing!
Very well said. Love it.
She right! My first job was McDonalds. For 3 years!! Yikes
For some reason, she just reminds me of a more successful, kinder, IRL sue sylvester
excellent, excellent frame of mind and thought process. would love ALL her advice. FOR THAT REASON I AM IN.
You know, despite all the memes about her on Shark Tank, shes quite well spoken and very fair and honest.
they're gonna go to Dr Phil and get sent to *_THE RANCH_*
Love this woman. 👍
I'm severely dyslexic and I f****** hated every moment of school.
Thank you Barbara!!!
I just love this woman so much!!
I love her honesty and wisdom
Wow motivation
She’s such an inspiration. Go, Barbara!…I’m in.
Always loved Barbara, one of my favorite sharks
What if the rich kid was a poor kid at first?
Very inspirational
Hypocrisy at it's finest: Rich kids are the worst except mine, because mine fought their struggles.
RMM she’s dismissing and putting every other rich kid in a box but not her kids, they’re different....
Exactly what I was thinking. Or yours had struggles. You probably had expensive tutors. Your son didn’t have to worry about a job. Hypocrite exactly
Right-some of us are misinformed.
I am dizzy now. The camera is too shaky.
This gives me hope
Wise lady I look up to!
We all have struggles and only we know how big and small they are (relative) to us.
it is not much or rich kids themselves as to their family's teaching and what values the parents passed down. I agree, it is hard to have hunger for success when your starting line is already someone's finish line.
She is soo happy 😊
*Simple knowledge that us poor know*
I love this.
She said her kid got rejected from all the top schools, but then says her son graduated top of his class at Columbia which has a 7% acceptance rate...
Ikr, its pretty privilege to assume Columbia is low rated, plus mentions her kids aren't that privilege since they have dyslexic. Her kids are still very much privileged even with learning disabilities. I'm sure Barbara got them access to good school and tutors to help out with dyslexic. If she let them cope with dyslexic on their own and spend them to low rated public school, then her son wouldn't even dream of going to Columbia. I am dyslexic, still struggle with it to this day. My parents are nice loving and supportive people but they couldn't afford to get me tutor or for me to go to nice private school that could help me with my learning disability. So I have to deal with my learning disability on my own. Which is hard for me to this day as an adult. It has cost me good grades and promotions.
transferred maybe?
She is so wise, witty, and a lovely person!
Forget rich kids, she doesn't invest in anything
Heardmod thank you!! I was looking for this comment!!!!!
@@VeeAmericanEagle it's okay to be picky lol
Ashley shim I love you
She's a real estate broker. Her only investments are the properties that she owns. Maybe a condo and a country house. That's it. She earns big commissions and that's it.
love this women
When your parents tell you that you can’t succeed, you have the F U attitude to succeed. She’s so right !!!
Work ethic has nothing to do with growing up rich or poor. It has to do with putting the time in to get results.
Grit. I love her.
perfect word...grit! She's faaabulous!
I loved how she ended that, it’s more grit than I’ve ever imagined and I earned it 🤞🏾🔥
Her necklace is stunning!
Came here to look down on Barbara based on all the other shark tank videos trashing her. But i am blown away by her insight.
I don't think it rich Vs poor its more like smart hardworking Vs lazy and no ambition
Hell, its a surprise even hearing Barbara make it past the pitch.
Full video?
True for rich young artists and poor young artists too.
She's right.
Very interesting of thinking
Do in America you have to repeat the grades over and over again until you pass? In the UK you just move up every year but each year has different levels
She is a genius 👍👍👍
Why are people clowning Barbara? She has come from nothing and I respect her for being smart with her investments . Not every deal that comes into shark tank will be a true success . She’s careful about what she does with her time and money .
True
okay but that necklace... she in her bag
I guess she wouldn’t invest into bill gates
daniel chung Bill Gates ,at the time, wouldn’t need her money, he had his parents.
@@RafaelLopezNewton Not really. She could have invested when Microsoft went public and she would probably be the richest woman in the world right now.
Barbara is awesome.
drinking game: take a sip everytime she says "Rich Kids"
She goes out no matter what
Barbara is pretty incredible.
24 rich kids have disliked this
I love her!
Sounds like she’s talking about equity….and I like it.
That necklace looks insane
Also among friends, people who have lesser seems to help greatest. Empathy, resilience, confidence -- you develop that without golden Mommy and Daddy
powerful
God bless the child that makes their own ❤
The world is unfair and will always be..rich kids will be ahead of anything...but one of the greatest story is when you have nothing then you succeed..your not just become an inspiration but a hero to other...
I'm Barbara, and for that reason, I'm out
Her son apparently had to scrap and claw to even get passing grades and got rejected from all the best schools according to her, but still got into Columbia, an amazing Ivy League school. Talk about privilege. Nobody is getting into Columbia with just "passing" grades unless there is some kind of connection or money. Basically, her son got into Columbia because he is a rich kid from a well-to-do family. So while she is generalizing kids on their parents hard work and wealth, maybe she should look in the mirror and ask herself, have my kids received the same benefits that I am talking shit about? What a joke.
Hater
She did say that her children are privileged
I don’t know how strict she lives by the things she said in this clip, but it is refreshing to hear it from a rich person. Even though she does probably invest in “injured” people because she thinks and/or has experienced she can make more money off of them.
Damn Barb you that GOaT
she gets it
So she wouldn't invest in the founders of Microsoft or Facebook?
They didn't start out as rich kids... So this actually proves her point.
Not.enough to.go.around you must not be familiar with their backgrounds. They both went to Harvard. Marks parents were doctors. Bills family come from a long list of successful business men. His father was an attorney.
Zhembut Borneo Bill Gates father was rich
bngr bngr your mixing up upper middle class with rich no one with half a brain would have invested in Zuckerberg because Facebook to start with wasn’t meant to be a public platform and the success was really attributed to the simplicity and usability(nothing predictable)of the site rather than anything Mark did as a businessman, not to mention he has no background in any entrepreneurial endeavors and if he was rich he wouldn’t have had to work during school to get some extra cash. Gates is a completely different story his family to an extent had a background in business and fairly affluent but aside from money he had connections other people could only dream of. You also have to consider the man was a merit scholar; money can’t and will never buy intelligence. Point is if you wanted reason to invest in him you could find some. Many rich people are aware of their place and know that they come from a powerful family and/or known the connections and backup plans that are accessible to them, thus care less or are not as passionate for what they do. It doesn’t matter whether your rich or poor but to be successful you have to be passionate and know what you’re doing and how you’re gonna do it. When you have a family worth billions, attend prestigious private schools with tuition worth more than some people annual income, and you can simply call a family friend and land a job that pays incredibly well it’s hard to have the attitude needed to be a successful entrepreneur.
groundtofu actially Marks brilliant idea was to scale Facebook beyond the university crowd. You are naive if you think the upper middle class is not rich.
Talent is talent regardless of backgrounds. Why keep a narrow minded approach to business? There are some strengths that young adults from wealthy backgrounds have and some young adults from middle to lower class backgrounds have. Should be looking to bond those talents together and not view both as isolated categories.
At around :30 she says "I dont invest in rich kids. Which isn't really true but almost true." From what I took from the conversation is, she wants to invest in someone that wants to invest in the company for more than just the money. The success. I agree that that talent is talent. Talent is important and so is the passion to want to improve. I heard in a video somewhere that your "gift/talent" isnt something you should be proud of. They elaborated more on that and I took it from it, "embrace your talent but dont allow talent to be the only thing you got going for you. Add some hustle, dedication, pain and hunger to it." So I think as she explains more as to what she means is that most rich kids that show up at shark tank have not gone through an important phase of struggle which to her is a key ingredient to that secret sauce of success.
I also wanted to add that in every category of income. There will be people who don't want to struggle to succeed.
@Black Andy Dufresne You said I was wrong , and then stated "It depends on the industry and type of business." Bit of an irony, ain't it? One could also argue option 1 grew up in a more disciplined environment having two high income parents that also wanted the same standards for their children to follow that lead to their own success. What im saying is, it does not really matter weather you grew up in a wealthy or lower middle class household. Individuals make decisions, and lets judge them based on their personal merit. And Im a person who grew up in a lower middle class household, but it would be damn unfair if my children were at a disadvantage for being from a well off household.
BUNCHA RICH KIDS IN THE AUDIENCE WTF
Diogenes how do you know?
Theres a Rich School were i live and there two kinds of kids there: the hard Working i Will never be good enought like my parents and the gold spooned i Can it all. We all know who Will suceed
I come from a wealthy family and my biggest fear is that I will never have even 10% of the success my parents have. I’m scared I’m going to end up a failure and I feel like I have so much to lose
