We woke up in our beautiful tiny home and headed to the Addington Coffee Co-op in Christchurch for another amazing meal. Seriously, it never ends here with the great food and coffee! Then, Owen was so sweet and booked me a facial while he went to get his haircut. That was such a treat!
Owen and I then spent the day trying various beers and food around Christchurch, and then went punting on the Avon!
We explored the little cave by our AirBnb and then went grocery shopping to end the night grilling at our tiny home and drinking some tasty, local wine.

The Christchurch earthquakes were crazy. There were 2 major ones and tens of thousands of aftershocks. Buildings collapsed, no power water or sewage for much of the city for many months. The army had to roll in to police the place. A lot of the roads were cracked to pieces and liquefaction bubbled up everywhere. Many people were made homeless, then there was an extremely cold and snowy winter.

I love Owen's haircut. If your facial was that good you'll be well set up for the dehydrating flight back home. The punt ride looked so relaxing (I nearly fell asleep😂, coffee needed) and what a contrast to your travelling adventures. I have a walk beside the river on the occasions I'm in Christchurch and it's always peaceful and lovely. The trash in the river is cleaned up periodically but I suspect the same kind of people who throw their rubbish into bushes and rivers here in the North Island do the same in the South😖.
There were 2 earthquakes, months apart and they did so much damage because they were shallow. New Zealand sits on the edges of 2 tectonic plates and you might say we have a slight subduction problem! NZ is sometimes called the Shaky Isles. The Southern Alps were created by the Alpine Fault and smaller fault lines radiate out. The one through Christchurch had been almost forgotten. The first earthquake in 2010 was actually stronger but it struck at night when people were asleep and I don't think there were any deaths. The 2011 shake (possibly an aftershock???) was in the middle of the day and did further damage to already weakened buildings. One of the newer buildings that apparently wasn't properly constructed, totally collapsed and that was where most of the tragedies happened. A lot of the beautiful old stone buildings were badly damaged as were many homes. Whole areas of the city were flooded with liquefaction and a 'student army' mobilised itself to help people. Just like California, there have been some amazing stories of courage and selflessness. As you will have seen, there is still a lot of reconstruction going on. In the meantime some of the city centre was set up in shipping containers, a great innovation that was an attraction in itself. A new permanent city market with shops and eateries has opened since you visited. It looks exciting and I'm hoping to get there next month. Hopefully Christchurch will be back to its traditionally beautiful and vibrant best again when you next visit.

FYI Eels also like hard boiled eggs and the yolk puffs out through their gills 😆(I hope I don't harm them!)

I give myself a no2 every now and then _hell, that don't sound right either_ 😲 I was working in Australia when the 2011 quake hit Christchurch and immediately got in touch with family to see if all was ok. What a nice change to share with you, a relaxing, tranquil trip on the Avon in a punt. I could almost smell the barbecue you were cooking up, made me feel s-o-o-o-o hungry. Those steaks and wine looked delicious. Sad to hear that your next video will be the last in New Zealand. I have enjoyed so much sharing your experiences and to see my Country through the eyes of visitor's really makes it all seem fresh.I feel I've traveled through both Islands again, as I did so often in my young, energetic days.

I'm super curious: Does anyone ever give you the stink eye (or even ask you to stop filming) when you are filming in enclosed public spaces like restaurants?
I always ask people if it's a private sort of thing, but I don't really worry about the public aspect since people are constantly always filming and taking pictures in public. It's also legal to shoot film in public so basically anyone who goes out is in essence agreeing to their face potentially being in a picture or something. :)

Left of that building 22:14 on the ground back in 2016-17, at the peak hype of Pokemon GO, you would find a lot of people there late at night on weekends. and even a fair amount of people during the week late at night. There are like at least 4-5 pokestops there just on that lawn there and a few more scattered around back to Esplanade Rd and back toward Marriner St and a handful of Pokemon gyms in that area of Sumner alone. it's a good spot if you're interested in Pokemon GO.

Punting -- veddy veddy English. It looked relaxing and really nice. Kind of a suitable way to start winding down a great trip. It has been a lot of fun to share it with you guys. New Zealand looks every bit as beautiful as I imagined it.

@@JenniferMabus my kids love going on the gondola then usually we'll drive through to Lyttelton then over the hill to Sumner beach if it's a nice day. Also jump on the tram, We get a yearly family pass. As a lot have said Christchurch is way different to what it was when I grew up. Apart from the parking haha it's slowly getting better.
