Welcome to our Pop Chord boot camp!! Today I have a FULL piano lesson for you on some of the most popular chord progressions used in music today. We are going to learn three of the most commonly used progressions, and you can practice along in real time to get better!
We'll also be looking at several different INVERSIONS for each chord, and we will practice moving through the chord progressions using different inversions.
I do just want to clarify a little mistake! At 7:39 I say the song "Apologize" was by Maroon 5. Of course, it was One Republic! So let me 'apologize' for that (see what I did there?!).

Loved this! Definitely will try this!!! I'm also learning from you (63 years old)!!! I wish I had your teaching when I was young! Maybe I would be playing well by now!!!
This is also great ear training too! So much one can do after being able to hear these progressions in popular music. Great boot camp.
At last I have found a perfect Piano teacher after trying personal teachers and online so easy to understand and very inspiring too.I hope to learn a lot and play better at the age of 70.
I’ve literally learned & become comfortable to play the piano from her since the start of quarantine. She’s the best teacher on YT.
Oh my goodness. I am sooooo happy I found your channel. My Yamaha DGX 660 arrives tomorrow. Yippee!!! I love your happy, sunny disposition and the way you teach. You make it so much fun. I am 61 and cannot wait to go on my learning journey with you. Thank you for the time you take to make these videos.
When I was in my late 30's I began taking piano lessons. I took lessons for 6 months before sadly I had to stop. My biggest problem was reading the left hand with one side of my brain and the right hand with the other. The treble cleff and the bass cleff were difficult for me. We never went over the chords or progressions and I wish we had. I have Multiple Sclerosis and was told it has a big effect on my diminishing IQ. I'm going to take it up again after watching your videos. I play the flute and don't have a hard time with that be ause I began playing on the 4th grade and my long term memory is great. Short term not so much. Wish me luck I'm feeling excited about it. I'm also going to get my grandaughter who's six enrolled in lessons. ❤
Good luck getting back into playing the piano, seeing your granddaughter learning to play and sharing the piano with her will leave everlasting memories for you both....... I am 59 and literally just started learning the piano in February 2020, slow and steady so far, Lisa helps so much........
A great tutorial, I practice these progressions as a warm-up in the mornings with my coffee.
I am a composer and a guitarist. I hope to use some of the available free VSTs. I think your channel will help me gain the skills needed to use a keyboard to enter my ideas into the digital score.
Hi Lisa I just love ur youtube piano tutorials so divine n inspiring. May God bless you abundantly for flowing all ur piano magic to the music lovers.
Great lesson. Thank you.
Thank you Lizt....a I`m very happy with your classes
can u make a video-different piano styles for time signatures 4/4,3/4,6/8,7/8
Once again an awesome lesson! Thank you, Lisa! Loved it!
thanks
Really I'm enjoying lot..thank you my dear
It really helped
Excellent tuition
BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Sincerely thanks. I’m practicing it now
WOW,,, Excellent,,, Part 2 ....
Hi Lisa , this is a great tutorial with the chord progressions using block chords and breaking them up. We need more like this.
So glad you liked this Charlie!!
Well! THANK YOU, LISA! I am happy with that chord progression boot camp.
WOOT WOOT!
great teacher, lovely perosnality thank you
Since I am happen to find your teaching VDO I am addicted to it. It gives me motivation to play the piano. Thank you cordialy and please go on teaching. ;))*
Lisaaaaa! Love the way you teach and your charisma / voice 👌🏻. And with those chord progressions you covered pretty much every song from the last century. I keep using them to improvise. I’m a newbie and I get it that you mostly teach stuff in the key of C which makes it easy to understand but how to go about if you’d like to transpose the same cord progression in another key besides learning every scale and every chord within that scale .. maybe an idea for a future tutorial ?
Great idea Vito! As for playing in other keys, I definitely recommend practicing your scales and chords in different keys when you can. It could be as simple as picking a new scale to learn one week and practicing that in addition to your regular practice routine!
Pianote thank you for your kind reply ... really appreciate it.
Thank you. You are an amazing teacher. I love your videos
Thank you, you help me a lot
Big thank you!
So instructive and SOOOOOOOOO useful!
Love it! Great teacher ;-)
Maybe I'm missing something but most of the popular songs I'm playing a are in the keys of A and B FLAT, A MAJOR. C SHARP
Oh nice! The progressions can still be the same though, no matter what key signature they're in. The progression is more about the order than the actual chords. What songs are you playing right now?
@@PianoteOfficial Thanks for the Reply! Your channel has helped me so much. Good to know! I am either playing Christian worship music, pop or a lot of 80s music, some country. Toto-I'll be over you, Maroon 5-she will be love , FGL-Holy, Bethel Music-Hallelujah, Starship-Sarah, Ed Sheeran-Perfect, Richard Marx-endless summer nights, Hold on, Elevation Worship-do it again, see a victory. I could go on and on but it just seems like a ton of music that i like anyway is in B flat, A flat, C sharp. Don't get me wrong there are songs in every key. But once again.. I love the channel and your tutelage. And maybe i should have been more clear when I said the "popular songs" that i like. I know a lot of people will not be into Christian music.
Are the inversions important? Thank you
Yes, they are.
Hey, I'm actually making music! Thanks!
WOW i had so much fun
Hello
Hello I love your lessons, I want to learn piano accompaniment any tips for that
Wonderful stuff! I'm off to explore the older videos.
Let it be - again
Great boot camp... Still on the 2nd group but getting there!
PLEASE HELP !
Why do you say ?
1-5-6-4 progression
1-6-4-5 progression
But then
6-4-1-5 progression isntead of 1 6 3 7 ????????
Because I'm staying in the major key, so I'm relating the chords to their number in that key. You absolutely could say 1-6-3-7 but you'd have to specify that you're in the minor key!
I PLAYED PIANO BE;FORE INMY YOUNGER DAYS, I AM 81 YEARS OLD AND I AM GOING TO BE BACK AND ENJOY AGAIN AFTER 50 YEARS LISA
Me too Ms Ethel. Playing again at 65.
👍💪🏾
Same here Ethel
Thank you, Lisa. I'm learning many things from you. You're a big influence for me to continue learning piano despite my age (77 nyears old).
What's wrong with being 77 ?! It's the new 47 these days, keep up the good work ! :)
How old is your keyboard? Man
You re awesome and you're gonna be playing beautifully
You give me hope ! If you can do it at 77, then I can too at 72.
@@qamarrossini good man . i started a few weeks ago aged 63

Sounds like The Scientist of Coldplay😂
Aundre Tembs definitely Scientist
on the second progression I can't stop singing "despacito" mixed to "the scientist"
These three chords in their various progressions have been used in almost every well known pop song, rock song, classical song ever written.
Amazing! Truly. I’m new to piano...just starting, and your UA-cam classes are such an encouragement. Though they are a bit advanced for me - they are easy to follow, difficult to play well - I am so inspired to practice X3. Thank you very much Lisa. You are a great player and teacher.
Your humor and playfulness makes these lessons a joy! Easy to follow and very helpful boot camp, Lisa! Thank you!
Hi, my name is RYAN TEDDER, from *One Republic.* Please have Lisa gimme a call. *lol*
I’ve graduated from full sail in music production 7 years ago and what you are showing in your videos are finally making since with what I was taught in music theory
I press the mouse button to stop you and I practice and then press the button again to start you again and I watch and then press again to stop you again and then I practice again. Works for me.
By the last few months I've done playin' with every progression on piano...n my teacher he says that I'm preety-fast learner...
Omg...i was soo pleased..
But moreover,i step in to some tutorial to make sure how much I do...and its all thanks to you...
I'll be watching out to learn more from this channel...
Love from Thango Oasis...
Always and always, thank you. I tune in to learn theory. Never knew what an inversion was. Your approach is as much of a talent as your skill. You inspire me to learn piano.
Love how you get your fingers out of the way when teaching to help a blind bat like me see better 🙏🙌
YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!
I just wrote a song and it was going over and over in my head all day so I came back to the piano to find the chords and just lost myself ,m...I came into your video to find the progression I needed instantly as it was the first one you played 🤣still can’t believe it lol .Thank you
Thank you. Appreciate all your videos and find them so helpful. Just curious, how does one choose whether to play the root chord versus an inversion chord? Is it just how it sounds? Intermediate stage, so eager to learn, but still find myself stumped trying to determine "how" exactly to play a chord ( root or inversion?). Thank you to anyone who can shed some light.
I’m a six month newbie on piano but have played guitar and studied theory for years. I use inversions to play in one area of the piano. For each chord in the progression I can find an inversion that allows me to barely have to move my hand. However, each inversion sounds different and I look forward to the day that I can choose an inversion based on its sound.
It may be that when a chord matches a melody note, the inversion to use, is the inversion which has at its top the same note an octave or two away from the melody note.
Another wonderful lesson and another idea for when I don’t know what to practice. Thank you!
These video's are just a pleasure to watch. Lisa, never stop putting your energy out there, it's captivating.
Do you sell your videos they are great. Thanks
Great video great teacher. By the way, the song she said it sounded like was apologize by OneRepublic not Maroon 5. lol oops
Yes whoops :)
I love you works
Learner from Malaysia I really appreciate your way of teaching easy to understand I love it thank you
Thank You Lisa. You are a Godsend to me. Just love you for sharing your knowledge so generously.
i like the way you teach us , really interesting
I would fly to get lessons from you Lisa! Just from your videos my playing has come leaps and bounds ahead!
'Let it Be' by The Beatles? :) Thank you Lisa! I've been playing drums for over 45 yrs and have recently decided to learn/re-learn the piano after many years. All of your Pianote videos are so helpful...clear and precise. You've given me so much to work on, especially during our stay@home time.
Same here. I am a drummer and now learning piano and synth. More for sound creation and scores. I am a film maker as well. So this will help my creativity. Love the challenge of it all.
Thank you! Now i know what I'm gonna practice for the next 3 months :')
Thank you for helping me understand how to play piano. I always wanted to learn how to play piano for years. Your piano lessons are easy to learn and fun to practice alone with you. Keep doing a good job. God bless you.
Hi Lisa, I think that your progression from the Am to the F in the last example is easier and sounds better when you made the “oops mistake” and went to the F just by playing A C F (pinky only moves up 1 note) and then onto the G. This is how I was taught when learning keyboards with the left hand chords only. It minimizes the movement and I think it sounds better. Just making my observation! I think your classes are great. My favourite progression (going back to my Guitar playing days) is the C Am F G(7). Or G Em C D7 etc. hundreds of songs use these progressions. Using the Circle of Fifths to show the minor chord to the Key you are using. Keep making the great vidoes.
Really nicely explained and demonstrated... Sounds great but your patience is truly Gold Medal caliber... Thank You! Love the Boot Camp Introduction! Brings me back to Marine Boot Camp! LOL...
Hi Lisa, thanks for all your help and yeaching from lockdown onwards. I am a UK based 68 yr old getting reacquainted with piano playing and the chord progression was overheard by my husband, and he asked if it was something by Moby! Guess the minor key fooled him!😂
The best teacher.🎹🎹🎹👋👋👋🙏
The first one is the background music for basically every tech advertisement, add arpeggios.
Thank you for sharing this simple and easy to follow. You are a good piano teacher Ma'am!!!.. More power to your TEAM!!.. 👍👍
Is there a lesson in members area about progressions and inversions. I don't get this for some reason. I was going to look for someone else to explain why a c cord will be c e g then a g chord may be the bottom note. Hey ! Call me stupid or old is fine but I want to learn this before a year when I'm gone. I want to play own passing music. Thank ya.
I AM A PIANOTE student... Your teaching is fine it's me not getting it. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
This is wonderful. A journey from the root position all the way to the three inversions. Thanks a lot.
Your teaching style is impressive. On point speed and depth. Very enjoyable sounds. Thank you!
This was so fun, it got way better once I turned my keyboard on ! ikr - my old fart moment.
Ahhh....am from India....still loving ur teaching.. thanku mam
Thanks a lot Lisa I love you
Hi, can you teach us the same for MINORS? PLEASE it would be much helpful
bruh that was the chord progression for let it be from the beatles
Pianote, you are too cute. Know that might be slightly non PC. Sorry.
Hello ma'am plz make lesson on different types of complex rthym how can we play on piano
The chord progression you've played in 5:57 is the chord progression in Amorfoda By Bad Bunny
1-5-6-4 could be made in minor key too? Like Am-Em-F-Dm? Thanks
If you could flash the letters below it would help . Thank you . You are good , thanks again .
Merci for this, Lisa.
Paul McCarthy said that it isn't a C chord until the bass player plays the C.
The second chord progression uses the same chords as the song broken vessels by Hillsong
Bad Bunny stole this progression ..... And that put it in Amorfoda ...
😂😂
Great video as always. Love the enthusiasm!
I wonder if it possible to consider doing a video on how to play without keep looking at your hands, ie. keyboard geography, tips on practicing jumps etc.
Thanks John that's a good idea!
Another great video, thanks Lisa
Great..........love it....👍
You are such a wonderful teacher.... thank you!! Quick question: how do you denote a chord inversion on paper?
Thanks Lisa! I'm only in month 3 of piano but your videos help a lot! And the play/stop/repeat buttons as well 😂
So happy that they help :)
Really helpful! Thanks, from London, England x
Your voice is so sweet.....Love from india🇮🇳🇮🇳
Is there a cord Progression app for people who don’t have full use their hands
Very useful lesson, cord progressions come in useful in backing up vocals
you are absolutely the best, and you're always smiling as you teach. Thank You
