Do you answer questions in the comments? I noticed something reading 1 colossians. To me it appears as though Paul is referencing the book of John? Is he, and if that's the case, would that mean that John was written prior to AD 60?

There's also the point "leading in small groups" at 3:50:00 :)
I am still a bit confused on how to differentiate and drawing the line, for example when making a podcast or teach people outside the church. You said, we can say that people should go to their local church, but I don't quit understand what is too much. You explained it in general, you also used I think Mike Heiser as an example. But there are people who watch everything they say and don't have a local church. Doesn't this make him kind of like an online pastor? I still just can't quite understand the difference. Can someone please explain? 😊

Thank you for all your effort with this teaching. I was a feminist and it ruined my life completely and my marriage. In short, I got tired of being in control, because it made everybody miserable. Only after becoming a Christian, I understood my role and now I love that my husband is the head of our family and I life daily to be his helper, all to the glory of God. If you read the scripture, you can not confuse it. It is extremely straight forward. Woman trying to to argue these basic points, are still trying to defend the self... the flesh. You will never find peace and joy with this attitude. Trust and believe the Word of God and crucify your flesh daily.

If you are both believers, there is a 3rd way berween either husband or wife trying to run everything alone! Christ is the leader, and husband and wife seek Him together and make decisions together! You are ONE, the Bible says. It is wonderful to act as one flesh with your spouse, with God in control of both of you!

In egalitarianism, neither spouse is "in control" unless the two of them mutually agree that they prefer one to have primary leadership responsibility.

@erinhuffman8713 I personally believe in discussion, prayer, and then the husband decides. If women can always overrule their husband, it's not egalitarian, it's feminism and she's in charge. We have lived with a rule of 2 yeses and 1 no. It sounds nice, but it was sin. All I had to do was dissent (complain, argue, whine) and I'd get my way.

    • @erinhuffman8713
      @erinhuffman8713 Місяць тому

@@RCGWho When both spouses have an attitude of deference to the other and the desire to seek unity, neither one will be pitching a fit just to get their way. They will be working together to make the best decision. None of us are perfect at this, especially in the beginning! But it does get better with lots of practice!

    I've got some sincere questions.
I've listened to the entire series. All of it. I am very impressed with Mike's logic, knowledge, scholarship, humility, honesty. Everything. I think there are a lot of good arguments for complementarianism in these videos. I think I agree with most or all of it. In addition, I am a huge Mike Winger fan of several years. I am also a life long complementarian according to my personally held beliefs. However, I fail to truly understand how complementarianism should actually manifest in a marriage differently than egalitarianism. I am 60 years old and have been a conservative, Christian since age 19. I have been married to a Godly man for 40 years. Verbally, we say we are in a complementarian marriage. But I've been challenged to figure out how that could be proven observationally. My husband is humble, kind, loving, generous. All the good things. He loves and respects me deeply, as I do him.
First Question: We make our decisions together. He has never trumped me with his complementarian authority. Why would he? Under what circumstances would we quit on our discussion and he make a decision I don't agree with? If the answer is any circumstance in which we just can not come to an agreement, my reply would be twofold. 1. That hasn't happened in 40 years. 2. My husband would not carry it out. He would simply keep praying and keep the discussion going. At some point, he knows we will agree and we always do. There is no bullying. No one sidedness. There is mutual respect and love, and a deep desire to put our precious relationship before our individual wants or needs and an even higher desire to follow the Holy Spirit. Why is the "tie breaker" idea in a Christian marriage even a thing? I do not understand it.
Second Question: Even complementarians as harsh (I'll go so far as to say unbiblically oppressively to women) as John Piper agree that the trump card is to be used only rarely, so lets set that aside. In what other actual ways, on a daily basis, in a marriage, does the wife's obligation to submit manifest in the relationship? Everything I've heard complementarian teachers teach to either the husband or the wife are things BOTH spouses should do! A husband should make sure the family prays and studies the Bible. Well, so should a wife, right? And don't they just do this together? A wife should treat her husband with respect, and so should the husband treat his wife with respect. Can someone tell me actual ways in which a loving, healthy, complementarian marriage is supposed to be different from an egalitarian marriage?

    • @erinhuffman8713
      @erinhuffman8713 2 місяці тому +22

It sounds like you have a beautiful marriage! You and your husband recognize that marriage is not about one of you exercising authority over the other, but about both of you submitting to God as the Head of your home. I hope you both share this wisdom with younger couples around you about what makes your marriage great!

Mike, I watched every minute of the whole series. It was so timely for my wife and I as we re-enter ministry after a long break recovering from the disabilities that hit our life like a wrecking ball when I survived a brain surgery that left me severely impaired. The church we planted from has gone full egalitarian, while we have discovered biblical complementarianism on our journey back to mental health and functioning. It has been particularly precious to us as my wife became a full-time caretaker and essentially single mom for YEARS and lost me as the head of our home. By God's grace and a real miracle (intentionally using that word) I'm back to being me, and have resumed my role in the family. As we enter the church, I needed Biblical clarity on how this should look in the structure and practice of the church. Grateful for your ministry, brother 👊🏼

As someone who has been accused of not studying deeply before concluding that I fall on the complementarian side, I have really appreciated this series. In fact, I DID study deeply, reading several books, many articles, and of course Bible passages to figure out God's will for men and women in marriage and ministry. That said, I continue to study and am always open to fresh information and thoughtful commentary in hopes that I will continue to grow in this area.
But while I come down close to where you are (not the same spot on the spectrum, but...), I have been somewhat bothered that you are harsher with egalitarians than with patriarchists. A lot more damage has been done by the latter group than the former. I wonder if your reactions are shaped somewhat by being in California among far more egals than pats, whereas in the Bible belt (where I live), it's far more common to come across hard-core comps and pats who denigrate or dismiss women with their rhetoric and actions.
Also, not being a woman, perhaps you haven't encountered that as much. As a woman in ministry (a teacher, not a pastor!), believe me, I've had plenty of negative feedback through the years from men who consider women less capable or worthy of consideration. And I've read so many messages from wives whose strong-comp/patriarchal husbands have treated them in a manner unworthy of Ephesians 5:23. I know you called out men on that, but it just doesn't feel strong enough. I'm praying that you'll use this wonderful platform to speak more boldly to such men and remind them that this isn't simply a peripheral matter but a core issue for many women. No, it's not about salvation, but it is about something God clearly cares about deeply: oppression. That needs to end. Yesterday. And forever.
    Thanks.

And thanks for clearing up that churches where deacons are in a position of leadership, women should not be appointed as such. Our church is led by a plurality of elders, and deacons are in a position of assistants to the elders.

Winger is essentially an egalitarian, because he doesn't understand the created order. Yes, Deborah was appointed as a judgement for the failure and abdication of men. Can a wrench be used as a hammer in a pinch? Yes it can. Is that the intended purpose of a wrench? No it's not. Does God sometimes appoint women to rule over men? Yes he does. Would this have ever happened if Adam never fell? No it wouldn't. It's not a woman's creational function or duty. God makes allowance for women to rule like God made allowance for divorce; "because of the hardness of your hearts."

Thank you so much for all that you do to get The Message out. I’ve listened to your first video on women in ministry and I was hooked! A few years ago, I was asked by my pastor to give a message for Mother’s Day at my church. I asked a family relative to pray, because I felt uneasy about it. She then begins to tell me that she could not pray for me because she didn’t believe that women should be speaking. This fired up a burn inside of me to understand that. I have seen women preach a message and I just felt that I wasn’t equipped to speak. I started googling women in ministry, and listening to different people give their opinion or biblical point of view. I started to see the light. Then I come across one of your videos. I loved how in depth you would study God’s Word and speak of it. I wanted more truth even if it was correcting the sin I was living in. I started searching your page for women in ministry and then I realized you were starting your journey in studying it. I am so thankful for you and your online ministry. Hi @lil-al , I believe you refer to Matthew Ch 16. We see it fulfilled in the next 7 verses! How? See here:
Jesus said the Son of Man would come in His Kingdom before they died. Essentially, come in glory as King. He had not yet died when He said this. One would assume He needs to first. Yet...we see different. We see Jesus glorified before God, in a glorified state, with Moses and Elijah before Him. The disciples then ask why the messiah came before Elijah (or so they thought)
So.. does this matter with the topic? It does: Jesus shows Peter James and John a glimpse into the Son of Man (messiah) coming into His Kingdom. A glorified King.
The disciples, seeing scripture, understood Eljiaj comes before the messiah. And so Jesus confirms they are correct - John the Baptist, in the spirit of Elijah.
To summarize, a few of those standing before Jesus saw Jesus in a glorified state as King (Messiah figure), entering His Kingdom seen in the world (those that believe and follow Him). In the end, when Jesus returns in judgement as King, that will be seen by everyone. Not just a few

God has given me a faith and a worship of His Word and His Goodness to trust that what His Word says is true and good, no matter what that means for my role in marriage or my limitations in serving in ministry. But on top of that, the Biblical worldview of complimentary marriage and male eldership is a unique and powerful edict we all should be passionate to embrace and model for the world because it is a beautiful alternative to man made ideas of egalitarian and patriarchal type systems. Living biblically, submitted to Gods Word is God glorifying and self blessing.

Thank you brother Mike. I watched the whole episode. Thank you for summarizing everything so well, this is something that I didn’t understand myself. Now I have clarity and biblical understanding to know how to be respectful to the word into the Lord, and how to teach others without overstepping the word. I teach children’s ministry and have a love for discussing the scriptures with others, teaching, and learning like iron sharpens iron. This topic has been so confused by many in leadership, and I was raised with egalitarian as well. When I read the scriptures, I didn’t understand about many different topics, especially this one, the word has been interpreted so loosely in the churches I had attended. I never even thought to question it until I started really digging in a few years ago and and seeing such contentions and the culture just made me dig all the deeper to the word. When I would question those leadership around me did not have clear understanding with how to interpret the word. You have given such in-depth in the word, careful section by section teaching, and given me a rock on which to stand on. Thank you. I am very grateful for your brother and all of your teachings have been such a blessing to me. May God bless you and continue to give you spiritual wisdom and help guide us all in a dark world.

Thank you so much Mike. I've watched the whole series (most videos multiple times).
I was at seminary during most of this time myself - came as an egalitarian from the Church of the Nazarene, met my husband there, a Complementarian. Honestly thought he was a discriminating a*hole at first because I had never met a complementarian before. And then I got to know him and realized he's actually a very respectful and kind man towards all women. Then I was reading a lot about it, watching your videos as soon as they came out and wrote two big essays/exegesis about Genesis 1-3 and 1Tim 2.
Now we are at a Church of the Nazarene because apart from this topic and a couple other things we agree with them on most things. My husband wants to become ordained as an "pastor-elder" but they might actually not do that because he wouldn't try and get young women motivated and mentor them towards becoming elders. It's really disheartening and we often feel very alone so your series was almost like a comfort for us to know that we're not alone, crazy or discriminating.

Thank you Mike. I cannot even fathom the amount of work you did in order to provide the other 12 videos and this summary video. God bless your efforts and use this information to at a minimum provoke deeper thinking and study for any who have questions or maybe even disagree. My church (Christian Missionary Alliance) now has a female Associate Pastor and are putting Women as Elders to a congregational vote soon. I feel so sad about the path the church is taking. This video is very helpful to me personally, based on the aforementioned.

I grew up C&MA (now attend a non-denom with historical conservative Baptist roots) and share in your sadness about the current trajectory of the Alliance; I recognize that it's historically faithful to how A.B. Simpson (the founder of the Alliance) was about women serving, but I still pray that God would renew His church through things like this substantive series, as deeply rooted as it is in His Word.

I have a person in my church (youth pastor, kind of) who thinks the "women be silent" verse is to be applied to the whole duration of service (I hope I'm using the correct term, english is not my first language).
When I asked him how he thinks a woman should share a testimony or prayer request, he said that after sunday service is over, someone says "service is over, now xy has something to share with you all", and then a woman can share that. This confused me greatly, because why would the exact same setting with just a different name make a difference? I kind of knew his view couldn't be right, but had no idea on how to respond to him. Your videos cleared so much up for me!
Now this person is not someone who makes the rules in my church, so no enforcing of something like that, but I have the feeling more people are turning into a similar direction... I hope I can share your videos with some of them

In our culture of insane egalitarianism bordering on matriarchy I can feel myself having to restrain myself from going the complete opposite direction.
A lot of what Mike says about the scripture makes sense, even as I grid my teeth nodding along.
I see Mike as a natural egalitarian that ended up in Complementarianism, and myself a reactionary patriarch moved into Complementarianism by scripture.
If Mike bows to scripture so shall I.
Also respect for having a nuanced view of scripture that will make both extremes dislike you lol, God bless you Mike for what it's worth I think you did well trying to walk the narrow path.

To be honest watching this Mike comes across as a raging feminist who reluctantly conceded a few steps for pragmatism- but is still severely overplaying the egalitarian hand. If women are always looking for the “exception” so they can step up over the men we have a society and church of Jezebels and that’s pretty much where we’re at.

Mike, Suggestion: You often use the word “rules,” but I think you mean “norms.” Norms set the standard, but can always have exceptions, but exceptions don’t change the norm, that’s why you should use the word “normative.” When rules have exceptions, you have to create a new rule. Your explanations of Biblical standards that are flexible, but nevertheless instructive, but also adaptive would benefit from this usage of “norms” and “normative” instead of saying “rules” all the time. Because you frequently and awkwardly have to back away from the word “rules” because of exceptions. Just say “norms” and “normative” for Biblical standards that are instructive, and have an ideal, but yet are flexible and can be adaptive.

I'll share some initial thoughts reading your comment:
I would say that some of the important fruit of not having women in the eldership role (and having male headship in marriage as well) is the fruit of trust, obedience and having the Bible in it's rightful place of authority in the church (which has an impact on our fruitfulness in general). We would probably also be surprised to see what other fruit can come out of it when God blesses our functioning within His designs. Because if this is true and this is how He has designed and willed these roles - then that is the best way for them to function according to His wisdom.
The issue of allowing women in certain roles of ministry might seem unimportant or "petty", but it's like a thread you start to pull and then realize that the effects and implications may reach wide - to marriages/families, gender in society, the feminization & functioning of the church, and in the end, it also seems like it comes down to the way we view, present and use the Word... is it God's inspired and authoritative Word to people, or is it just the words of people about God?
Just a few thoughts, but I'm interested to hear how others respond to you as well😊

First off, it maintains a division in masculine and feminine roles. Feminism pushes people into masculine roles and, ironically, guts feminine roles of importance. Maintaining the division forces the church to retain its feminine roles which shouldn't be burdened by leadership decisions
Second, you have practical concerns like women not being able to command respect from men. There's a biological order in the world where men are geared towards authority and decisiveness and women aren't. Messing with the natural order only creates problems. And we've seen this with so many female-led churches falling prey to LGBTQ indoctrination

Jesus approved of a woman to be a Judge over Israel in the Old Covenant,
with the authority to judge homicide cases. To believe that Jesus would
strongly disapprove of a woman being an elder in the New Covenant,
makes no sense whatsoever. This is all Paul.
Paul gave himself the title of 'father', since he couldn't meet the qualifications
of elder that he himself put forward.
For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers...
      -excerpt 1 Corinthians 4 KJV
      -words of Paul
If one supports the qualifications of elder, as put forward by Paul, one
MUST also accept that the title/position of 'father' is valid and proper in
Christianity. Since this is also one of Paul's teachings.
But the title of 'father' was expressly forbidden by Jesus.
And do not call anyone on earth your father; for only One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
      -excerpt Matthew 23
      -words of Jesus
A full post on this is available. Paul regarded his position
as 'father' as valid and significant. This was one of his false
      teachings.

I really appreciate all you’ve done, but I disagree on the tie breaker. I’ve been happily married for almost 30 years and we make our decisions equally. We’ve never needed a tie breaker. We decided how we would solve disagreements before we got married. We decided if we don’t agree, I pick the house, he picks the car, and we stayed near the grandparents, so no surprise moves and jobs to another state like has happened to my friends. We also decided that whoever got a job with the most money , then a move might be on the table, if the other spouse could stay home on the new salary. Since I made more a few years into our marriage, we were able to stay near family. When my husband wanted apply for a higher salary job farther away, I was in support. So it can work. You don’t need a tie breaker , if you take turns with final decisions. I had a friend whose husband joined the military as a surprise, no discussion. She had to keep moving every few years. This was not because he was out of a job. He just basically made all the decisions. I would have ended up divorced if I had ended up with a chauvinist.🤦🏻‍♀️

I completely agree with you on the tiebreaker, and also commented on it earlier! Tiebreakers are a completely unhealthy way of solving a problem, and couples that give one person this power over the other are more likely to end in divorce (one stat I heard was 7x more likely!) Why would anybody want to do this to your marriage when you don't have to? Been married 20 years myself, and it's not necessary.

It's still complimentary. The authority thing is like the last straw and you'll only get to that point in extreme cases.
Your husband will be held accountable by God for every activity and idea that sent through your family. Both authority and submissions design is to protect the family. Authority is the one that will be held most accountable for that work.
The only time a godly husband would have a foot down situation is the wife brought in an ungodly or destructive idea, which no highly woman would do, so it's very rare.
For example Adam should have been like heck no, that's why he got cursed more. It wasn't bad that eve brought an idea, it was bad that it was s sin.

I watched it all! Every minute. And I'm so, so grateful for this work! It clarified the beauty of Scripture: it means what it seems to mean, as long as we're reading it responsibly. We don't have to be scholars or history experts to understand how God is telling us to live. We don't have to worry that God said things He didn't mean. It's not all easy to understand, but it's *possible* to understand, to the extent we need to in order to live the way God wants us to, with the Holy Spirit and a willingness to submit to Him. This series confirmed the plain reading of Scripture (and affirmed that God doesn't hide the truth from people just because they don't know enough about ancient cultures or languages), and it answered questions I didn't know I should have asked about my own ministry. Thank you, Mike, and thanks to our good God for His guidance and provision for you to do this so well and to serve us all in this way. Truly a gift.

On getting married, I very much like the Dutch saying of 'hopping in the boat together.' I have always seen it like this. Every boat has a captain, which is the main authority. But any captain that does not accept advise or correction from his first officer/chief engineer/boatswain, will risk never reaching his goal, face a mutiny or even sinking the ship. He will have to take good care of his crew (family) if he wishes a smooth trip and will be able to face storms. No problem if my husband is the captain, as long as he is willing to take advise, especially on matters that others know more about.

    • @lookingatdaisies9901
      @lookingatdaisies9901 15 днів тому

That's pretty much what it is. Godly authority is the person that will be held accountable for the group. Everyone is to do their part in keeping the group safe and authority has been given to one person for the work to keep watch over the group (Hebrews 13:17).
It's like a seal of their approval on the idea/activities going through the family, that is been analysed for safety, benefits, major Risks have been solved. Ideas and analysis can come from anyone because you're cooperating with the work of leadership when you bring in ideas Or warnings that could safeguard the group.
So in that sense authority not listening or taking advice from anyone is most likely not aware what their job is, and that it is an assignment they'll be held accountable for. And yes I'll be very afraid of a ship captain who doesn't realise he's accountable for the lives on his ship and their safety is the point of his authority, not how awesome of a ship captain God thinks he is.😅

Hi @MikeWinger. I have watched your series on women in ministry and have found 3 questions which remain unanswered and still rather puzzling to me. I'm interested in your responses to them:
    a) The WHY. The reasoning behind it... If God designed it this way from creation...Why do wives need to have men as an authority over them? If Jesus is an adequate authority over men (and the whole church), why do wives need an extra layer of authority over them?
    b) Why does God place limits on the types of service women can do in the church but not have any limitations for men? How can it be said that men and women have 'different roles', if men can serve in every way women can in ministry (just more)? That doesn't sound like different service, it sounds like limited service (based on gender).
    C) Women deacons are mentioned in 1 Tim 3:11 and you conclude that only the one verse relates to women. Why are the deaconesses not expected to have all the qualities that are required of male deacons? Why do male deacons have to be faithful to their wife but deaconesses not?
This seems very strange considering in 1 Tim 5v9 - Paul expects enlisted widows to be a "one-man woman" (the female equivalent of a one-woman man). Why require it of widows but not deaconesses?

Great questions! And re: your 1st question, why do women need extra authority over them if they marry, but if they remain single or are widowed they don't?

Perhaps what is below will answer your questions:
For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers...
      -excerpt 1 Corinthians 4 KJV
      -words of Paul
And do not call anyone on earth your father; for only One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
      -excerpt Matthew 23

      Part 10
PAUL REFERS TO HIMSELF AS A SPIRITUAL FATHER
THE MOST SERIOUS FALSE TEACHING OF PAUL
      (post not included, obviously)
      Conclusion:
Paul referred to himself as a 'father' several times in the New Testament. He
was NOT a 'father' since this position/title was strictly forbidden by Jesus. This
false teaching of Paul calls into question some of his other teachings. Especially,
I believe, all teachings about eldership/pastorship.
