4:45 For the context that Ric couldn't remember off the top of his head, Antonio Inoki was a student of the late great Rikidozan, the original Japanese global pro wrestler. Rikidozan made pro wrestling popular over there almost singlehandedly, and he trained two amazing Japanese pro wrestlers, Inoki, the founder of New Japan Pro Wrestling, and Giant Baba Shohei, the founder of All-Japan Pro Wrestling.
Rikidozan was born in North Korea at a time when Japan occupied the whole Korean Peninsula, so in the eyes of Kim Il-Sung and his son Kim Jong-Il, Rikidozan was a Korean hero, and Inoki was a student of said Korean hero.

To me it seemed like Flair's understanding of the question was a bit different. Obviously Buddy Rogers was the "real nature boy" (as Scott Steiner used to say), so no argument there. They were talking about people Flair looked at in life and wanted to be like, such as Joe Namath. I thought Flair was talking about real life people that he wanted to be like and emulate the type of life those people lived, not wrestlers that influenced his gimmick.

Ali wanted it to be a work. Inoki wanted a shoot. Ali got wind and made rules limiting Enoki's ability to grapple. So instead of giving the fans a show, Inoki but scooted. Ali wanted to give the fans a show, which is the point of pro wrestling. Inoki wanted to make a name for himself by being up Ali.

All of their rooms were bugged in North Korea, including the phones (no cell phones). In the Dark Side of the Ring episode on this NK trip, Scott Norton discusses his crazy incident while there for the show. The place was terribly boring to him, and he was aggravated with the whole situation. So on a phone call with his wife he said "this place sucks". A few minutes later there were NK military officials escorting him from his room. They ended up just scaring him a bit, but made sure to explain to Norton that derogatory comments like his towards the country was punishable by death.

I read that Antonio Inoki was running for re-election in the Japanese House of Councillors, but a lot of scandals were revealed on ties with the Yakuza & embezzlement. He came up with the pro wrestling event in North Korea to push for peace and easing tensions between North Korea, Japan, and the U.S. with hopes that it made many forget those scandals. Kim Jong Il agreed to this event to show his strength as the new leader of North Korea. His father died months before this wrestling event. Eric Bischoff agreed for higher ratings in WCW and beat WWF/WWE back then (This was before NWO existed). This event did not help Antonio Inoki get re-elected or WCW in the ratings (I started watching WCW when I heard Hulk Hogan became a heel and formed NWO). No one outside of North Korea saw Kim Jong Il as a strong or competent leader after this event. Although this is known in history as the world's largest wrestling event, attendance was mandatory where any who didn't go got a bullet in the head.

The reason Inoki fought like that against Ali, is because shortly before the fight Ali's camp demanded a rule change, which prohibited any wrestling takedowns or judo throws. So Inoki tried to find a loophole by leg scissoring Ali to the ground, where he believed he could submit him.

I know how Ric felt. I went to Jamaica in the early 90's. The hour and a half drive from the airport to the resort in Negril was eye opening to say the least. Never seen poverty like that. The way the locals looked at our bus made me feel like we were meals on wheels. The resort itself was beautiful but the beach was not private and there were some very sketchy characters hanging around. But the reason I'll never go back is at the airport when I was leaving, the bastards dumped my luggage twice, with soldiers with automatic rifles right next to me. I wasn't stupid enough to try and smuggle weed out of there. When you're there they don't care how much you smoke and it was paralyzing. I was so happy when our plane took off and I was on my way back to the U.S.

I'm glad so many people have seen this interview because I think a lot of younger wrestling fans probably don't know about WCW going to North Korea in 1995. I think WCW deserves credit for participating in what at least looked like an attempt to bring Kim Jong Il and North Korea out of the dark ages, but it was ultimately for nothing. In the end, the company should've never went.
The only thing I would change from how it went is that WCW, like WWE did with bringing Mansoor from Saudi Arabia to the United States, should've brought a few athletes from North Korea into the company. At the very least, they would be rescued from that country and people in the west could learn a little more about how terrible North Korea really is.

The story with Inoki is that Inoki wanted to prove wrestling was the best style of fighting, and wanted to fight Ali to prove it. Ali agreed because he thought he could beat anyone in the world. Ali then started watching Inoki training, and started adding rules & stipulations to the fight, or he would back out. Inoki agreed to everything and wanted to "fight" no matter what the rules were, but Ali was scared, and added so many rules that this is what the fight turned into.

Is Ric getting senile? When Joe asked if he had any wrestling influences, Ric either lied or he's forgotten. Dusty Rhodes was an influence to Ric and so was a Wrestler named The NATURE BOY Buddy Rodgers. This is not a secret in the Wrestling universe. EVERYONE knows this. Flair originally wanted to be known as "Ricky Rhodes." Dusty told him to be his own personality. That's when he decided to go the Buddy Rodgers route. The robes, the flamboyant behavior, THE NAME, was all influenced by Buddy
So idk why Ric wouldn't say this on JRE. Those of us who are old enough know the truth and how things really happened.

Inoki was kicking legs coz according to contract with Ali's team, he was not allowed to wrestle standing. Only on the ground. They even had unlimited rope breaks for Ali to get out of submission holds without any technical ability.
It was a last minute stipulation from Ali's entourage, after they witnessed a Judoka completely ragdolling a boxer just couple of weeks before their match.
Both Gene Lebell (the referee for their match) and Karl Gotch (Inoki's coach and cornerman) talked about this in separate interviews.
