Right? The new one looks like a Kia.. They literally got uglier every year after the blob eye, after looking like something you’d actually look at every generation before that.. kinda disappointed in donut media on this one
All we need is for Kia/Hyundai to release an AWD variant of the Elantra or Veloster N. They're both already compelling, similarly priced performance cars that offer manual options. This would be the closest thing to an EVO that we could hope for.
Maybe the sportiest trim of the legacy, outback, forester, etc. But the STI will be manual only and the WRX will be a manual with a CVT option. Edit: top trim is the GT and it indeed comes with the CVT only. I'm assuming so Subarus Eyesight can be implemented.
@@Gameplayery I DD a modified 05 WRX and I was pretty anti-CVT before we got our Ascent. After driving it a bit, its not as bad as you'd think, especiallyin high traffic areas. The only thing I hate about it is the fake shifting. When you full throttle it, though, it holds the RPM in the perfect spot to get the boost you want. It accelerates pretty decent for a 4600 lb car. Dont get me wrong, I'd still rather drive a manual, but CVTs arent all bad. And they get decent gas mileage too. On a 2000 mile journey in our Ascent, we got an average of 22-23. There was a bit of 80+ in there, that didn't help. Not bad for a turboed vehicle that size. Don't worry, I still have my WRX, and I still have tons of fun in it.
@@misdemeanor61 oh yeah, I guess you are right. I'm assuming the top trim comes with Eyesight, which is only available with the CVT. Looks like it will also be the only trim with electronically controlled suspension and Recaro seats.
Personally Hawkeye was my favorite looking sedan, and the 2011 hatchback sti's are the coolest ever! I'd be happy if they just brought back the same 2011 body with a better engine!
If that plastic cladding was paint-matched, or carbon fiber like its concept, I think the hate on it's looks would've been less intense. But with Subaru trying to go for a "wilderness" look, it just looks cheap in execution. Also the GT trim being in CVT only is a whole different crime.
I hate this trend of adding plastic to "off-road" cars. Sure, it scratches less, but it looks ugly and we all know that 90% of those cars will never leave the asphalt.
"OuR MaNuAl tAkE rAtE iS 74%!!!1!!" *makes the new top trim CVT only. It's the same thing as them axing the hatchbacks because they "couldn't afford to R&D a new chassis for both sedan and hatch". But they'll sell you an Impreza hatch or crosstrek...and expect enthusiast to just buy the sedan, because what other option do you have? AWD, Manual, LSD front and rear with E-Diff in the middle and 6 pot brembos for 36k? No remaining competition.
The Hawkeye is my favorite by far. It looks so aggressive.... Also that blue interior is so amazing. Just got done building my 06 and she puts down 453 hrsprs to the wheels and I couldn't be more happy❤️
@@masonh2538 my pfp is the 2010 sti hatch I had a few months ago, rolling with the 06 now. Blob eyes look good too, just not as good as the hawkeye, but to each their own
The main problem I have with the XT is that it’s essentially the equivalent model to the Liberty/Legacy GT, but doesn’t get the 6-speed manual. The 5-speed is so much crappier. The interior features are also crappier. I guess it’s more like a base WRX than a GT but it’s a shame there’s not a higher model with a proper gearbox.
@@pieflies I agree about the gearbox, minus the sti variant. But its actually based off the equivalent impreza. The legacy platform is totally different. However, engines and major drivetrain components are still compatible.
It’s crazy when I drive my 02 wrx the amount of attention it gets from young and middle aged people. The people loved and miss the GD body style and it will always be my favorite
I am not even a car fanatic, but the impreza will forever be iconic, especially here in Europe where rally was so popular 😁 tbh all "sunday racing lads" had an impreza and we grew up to love it as a milestone of the 2000s I would for sure congratulate you for your car mate ^^ great taste
I don’t even care about the looks, I can’t believe that after 20 years the engine is basically the same putting out the same power. The STi used to be able to at least somewhat compete with the e46 M3. Now the STi will get absolutely obliterated by a 340i never mind and actual M car.
@@michaelpascual3581 yup, Subaru has gotten complacent but their fan base is so loyal they don’t even care. The amount of new WRXs/STis I see is insane, they don’t care that the power train is basically the same thing with no real performance improvements because they are so invested in Subaru.
@@lamakicker69 I'm a VA WRX owner though. But I own mine as a sentimental value. I think the reason why they still sell is because the aftermarket parts for it still exists. Easy to find and boost up. When I was taking my On-The-Job training at a friend's shop, I've seen engine set-ups of old STI's being "replicated" in the new. But based on what the owners in my place tell me, they do it just for the feels and sound. The community is lovely ironically. They've met with Evo owners and shared beers. It's the Civic clubs that get cocky nowadays.
its not the same engine as far as the WRX, it's direct injected with a twin scroll turbocharger, equal length headers and detuned, just adding a few bolt ons and flex fuel you can gain +100whp going from 220-230 at the wheels to 350+ on the stock motor safely. the new gen will also be similar to last gens FA20 but a 2.4 liter and twin scroll/equal length headers and also heavily detuned but a lot to be left on the table for tuning and aftermarket parts. I'd guess it would push over 400whp safely on stock block as I've seen a few of the Ascent 2.4 liters swapped making that with just a tune.
"So who are we going to sponsor to promote our toothpaste?" "How about these grease covered gearheads that talk nothing but hrsprs?" "..." "..." "...That's perfect."
This is technically true because long intake runners and needing a heavier flywheel than an inline because the primary/secondary forces simultaneously face outwards/inwards for both banks at TDC and BDC.
I’ve got a ‘02 silver Bug-eye wagon, bought new 20 years ago this month, never modded and with 73k, never thrashed but certainly often enjoyed miles. Love that car to this day and it still looks brand new - oddly the only failures I’ve had are the #2 fan speed and the digital clock display, everything else works like a champ including every original light bulb on the car along with that eager engine and lovely boxer burble. I can’t really see a car that could replace it even as I could afford most everything other than a super car.
The thing is, you can be ugly, but you have got to have character. The new Impreza has no character. The vehicle has a strong rally pedigree, but the new design is as bland as the E120 Corolla from 2000. It's unforgivable.
I sold "Straight from Japan" Impressa's right out of High School back in early 1994... A "bit" small, but they where affordable (at the time) at about $14-$20,000.
Big market now in canada for them, and the usa is about to explode cause the 25 year import rule. Got my hands on a gc8 this year before they go up thankfully.
Honestly the first gen WRX is probably the best looking one to me. It's simple but has a nice slick look. Feels like it means business but isn't excessive about it. It does all of that while not looking boring, especially in STi form. Bugeye and Hawkeye are nice too.
@faille quo reflexes I fully agree! I have a hawkeye wrx and I love every thing about it (perhaps no the 2.5 engine, I wish it had the 2.0). I have driven the hatchback widebody and it doesnt come close to the experience the GD chassis provides

After withdrawing from WRC, this car lost its appeal. Especially as all the competition caught and overtook it when it comes to performance. Similar thing happened to the Evo too... It's a shame, I loved those cars in my younger years.
I like Subaru, I really do. However, Subaru hasn't been relevant in the WRC for the last 20 years. They can't compete with their oversized 4-door sedans. Even the i20, Veloster are better vehicles for WRC.
@@doubledown8229 How can the be relevant in WRC? They haven't competed in the WRC in 14 years. Before that, they remained pretty relevant almost all the way to the end... The Veloster is not being used in the WRC. Also, WRC cars are pretty much prototypes where it doesn't really matter what they are "based" on.
I’ve never felt as much joy opening a car door as I do in a bugeye. The weight/heft is just perfect, and having the window down with no frame just feels so right. Subaru give the people what they want.

You're not wrong though, thats what toyota did with the new supra, bunch of fake vents, an engine capable of tons of power and easily tunable but cap its hp. It was all done to be sold within a certain price bracket, and compete with others in that same bracket. They know people will modify it i believe they said it themselves. They're leaving a bunch of tuning/modification power to aftermarket parties. Maybe subaru is leaving it to the aftermarket parties to do something with it
The 2003-2006 Model at 5:07 is what I picture when I think of what a WRX really is. This car was absolutely savage. Everything in this car is an on/off switch: gas, brakes, steering, handling, drifting.. SO FUN TO DRIVE!
If you flip back and forth between the concept and the production version, they are nearly the identical. There are just subtle changes from the concept that make it less aggressive, the most notable being a reworked back end, shorter wheelbase, smaller tires, different front hood scoop, and taller windows. They are all relatively minor tweaks that completely change the overall attitude of the car.
Agreed! I keep saying it over and over again. Why are we all so surprised? Look at the Viziv concept and you can clearly see that’s what we got. Now we just have to hope that we get a nice STI variant.
@Kalvin Thomas I’m still in disbelief. We needed at least one more year of an internal combustion STI.. We are living in some sad times, end of an era for sure!
@Eric the Blondie boy STI is going to be an EV car yes, but it won't be called an STI, it'll be called an STe which Subaru have now trademarked and patented.
I agree. looking at the concept and production car, they are the same. fill the headlights in and they're the same, same tail lights, rear bumper, fender cladding, etc.
I really hope the STI will bring it all back, and they’re taking a long time to reveal so I’m hoping they listened to the community and will change the car through the STI
The 22b is cool but there are other great special editions that were produced with the same numbers or less. They just hide in the shadow of the 22b. The Spec C Type RAR hawk and all the gd s20X models are amazing as well 👌 Edit: to me, in terms of the GC/GM platform. I'd rather take the coupe sti type r over the 22b personally
I own a 2003 bug eye, and I've had so many random people in the city I live in tell me they love the way my car looks, now a days the older ones are getting harder and harder to find. I'm very happy I own something that's historic.
Subaru fans still falling for Subie’s ol’ bait and switch with the WRX concepts. The Viziv looks almost identical to the WRX concept they showed way back in 2013!
The Bug-eye has always been my favorite look of the WRX. Though, admittedly, it did have to grow on me a bit, as did every other version. Maybe in time the new iteration will also grow on me as well.
If I was a Subaru executive, I’d wanna push through a 2-door version of a bug-eye Impreza WRX STI. My only gripe with the bug-eye was that there was no two-door version.

But I finally was able to own my own subaru which is a 2014 wrx hatchback in silver. Definately would have prefered an older style but after saving it from going into metal garbage bin and bringing it back to life it became more than i thought it could be. Its sexy, it purs, it burs, it cries and it grinds... Alot. But anyway a subaru is a subaru, either you hate it, or you're part of the cult. 😁 there is no turning back. Back to the video though. Idk about the newer generations, everyone has their preferences but i'd rather take the Fa20 and throw it in a GC8
Wish I'd been able to purchase one. If the new one makes it to the UK I bet it will be silly money. We don't get the BRZ anymore either. Love seeing an Impreza on the road. Doesn't matter if it's even the standard car. Same goes for the Mitsubishi Lancer. Love what you wrote above
@Matt Graus yep, that’s why i kept it. Super low center of gravity, handling of a car 2 or 3 times its cost. Good power. I have the wagon so it goes camping. When its time to replace it I will need a tesla roadster and a truck to do the same job
When I saw the new generation online I liked general styling. I didn’t mind the cladding around the wheels but thought the back bumper section was too heavy and ugly. When I saw it for the first time at the Subaru dealer while my Outback was in for service, I was interested and i liked the rear end. I ended up test driving it and the next day traded the Outback in for a 2022 WRX prem ( manual of course in world rally blue pearl ). I’m in love with the WRX. It’s raw, edgy and stands out from the crowd. I feel alive again after driving a competent but dull workhorse for the past 6 years. To be honest I always thought I would keep it until it fell apart but I’m all about the WRX. Bravo Subaru. Now bring us an STI.
Agreed, my 01 RSTI gets compliments every time I bring it out, from old heads and youngsters alike. Its a lifer car for me that I hope to hand down to my son one day.

There's never been a bad WRX, but the new one is probably the best everywhere but styling (I'd put it second because you can't beat the 22b). The improvements to the chassis/suspension/engine tuning are immediately apparent when you drive one, and it still has that "it looks like an economy sedan until you get close and realize something's weird about it" vibe. I've had multiple owners of Impreza-based WRX's come over and compliment it already. The clutch-protection and lack of boost in 1st gear hurts the spec sheet, but the moment you hit 2k in 2nd it will put its foot in your back. The brakes aren't confidence inspiring, but on a tight back road you barely need them with how much traction it has. It's a good car.

It’s sad that we’ve lost that rally look and feel they offered us with that amazing performance Now it looks like an old conservative guys grocery getter that can barely out run a kid on his scooter
The appearance is one thing - I find that in darker colours (especially grey), you can mute the plastic cladding much more and it looks noticeably better. Which is why it looks the worst in white, IMO. Although it doesn't change how bad the rear looks. The other issue is we're getting barely anything more in the performance department despite a thirstier, larger engine. The STI better be good is all I can conclude with..

Honestly subaru is in a very very weird spot right now that can go either really well for them or really poorly. Their whole brand is built around the symmetrical AWD, but I think what people are starting to realize is that subaru's are not the tackle anything kinda vehicle they're made out to be because toyota made a rav4 more capable, forcing the wilderness trims to start showing up just to keep subaru on the map. Tbh I kinda like the new one. The taillights bother me a bit but put it on some rally wheels and good tires and it would be awesome imo. But then again I believe any car can be a rally car, especially one that has rally car heritage. I think the cladding allows for a bit of room to have aftermarket companies make flares and things that attach at factory points while many cars have the fender as a solid piece allowing for no points to mount on.
The 2011 Sti Hatchback always catches my eyes. I wish I had bought one or the wrx of that time when it came out because today...they're still selling for almost the same amount.
I hated the design at first but after a couple of months it's kind of growing on me. I still think the orange launch color looks like toddler puke but other colors actually accent the car nicely. I'm excited to see what mod culture does with the car
I just love the old design, I always liked the boxy car with aggressive front and big spoiler in the back. Seeing the new design, without a spoiler, no more squared off body parts, narrower body, it looks like a family car, not a really one
Amazingly great video as always one comment stood out. "The average age of new car buyers are 55 years old" with all the unsold cars every year and stats like that you would think the industry would clue in a drop prices. They will make more money overall by sheer volume of sales.
It's like how The Last Jedi got hated for being different, forgetting that Empire Strikes Back was similarly criticized. I actually don't mind how the new WRX looks, the previous generation was the most boring IMO.
How does no one see that the new WRX is modeled after the Viziv concept!? Subaru has been teasing us with the concept for years, we knew it was happening. Look at the fender shapes on the concept, look at the front bumper, and rear bumper it’s all there!! I’m not a fan of the new looks, BUT we knew it was coming. 🤦🏻♂️ Hopefully, hopefully we get a nice STI version.
Always a bugeye fan! I think all can agree tho, what is more annoying about the new styling is that its morphing into your grandma's sedan with more pep...kinda. Keep it unique looking !
It’s never been unique looking. It’s always just been an Impreza with a wing and a hood scoop. Why people thought that would suddenly change now I have no idea.
The first gen WRX will always be the best looking to me because it's what got me into that look in the first place, but I would never choose it as a daily given the updates made since. The VA was definitely the best looking when it came out, as it was closest to the first gen, but now that the VB is out, I would prefer it as long as the appropriate color is chosen or appropriate exterior mods are in place. I bought magnetite grey, which blends perfectly with the cladding. I saw a white VB with a black or CF hood scoop swap that looked amazing and balanced the cladding perfectly. The first American market WRXs all the way to '14 were too soft or rounded or bulbous--they got away from the simplistic beauty of the first gen and 2.5 RS (which WaPo called "ugly as sin" by the way). I bought the VB and would never look back unless that first gen fell into my lap (ow) and I could take it out on the weekends just to show off.

U sir, speak facts.
All we need is for Kia/Hyundai to release an AWD variant of the Elantra or Veloster N. They're both already compelling, similarly priced performance cars that offer manual options. This would be the closest thing to an EVO that we could hope for.
The fact that the sportiest trim only comes with a CVT tells you everything you need to know about Subaru's performance vehicles
Ewww CVT 🤢
@Damian Chiliński the top WRX (non sti though) only comes with a CVT and a bunch of other stuff you can't get on lower 6 speed trims.
@@misdemeanor61 oh yeah, I guess you are right. I'm assuming the top trim comes with Eyesight, which is only available with the CVT. Looks like it will also be the only trim with electronically controlled suspension and Recaro seats.

I could agree with paint matched, but not carbon fiber. CF would make the car more expensive than it needs to be.

I don’t even care about the looks, I can’t believe that after 20 years the engine is basically the same putting out the same power. The STi used to be able to at least somewhat compete with the e46 M3. Now the STi will get absolutely obliterated by a 340i never mind and actual M car.
Also the Civic Type R. STIs used to walk all over them. Now a big turbo Civic would kill a big turbo STI

Mitsu's auto line-up might add 10% to their income. They've always been a heavy industry/aircraft company and have stated that's where their focus will continue to be. If the auto line fails, so beit. I mean, look at what happened to the Eclipse and the outcry over that for the last 4+ years. They don't care, unless it stops making money; about 15-20% profit/vehicle line.
@@DjJtown - pretty much Mitsubishi Auto is in the hands of Nissan's Japanese elite who want the brand D-E-A-D. The "Lancer as a crossover" is already here in the Outlander Sport, soon to be based on the Qashqai / Rogue Sport platform.
Don't expect an Evo vs. STi rematch.... If Nissan really wanted to keep Mitsu Auto around a Mirage Evo (with Nissan's 188hp T-1.6L from the last gen Juke and Sentra Turbo) would've surfaced. Then a T-1.2-1.5L 3-pot to compete against the Yaris GR would've followed.
Mitsushity is dead
@@tommm.1538 - Mitsu Auto (a division the others in their Group doesn't care for) make themselves dead by CHEATING (MPG Gate started it all) and all the Japanese Company Culture backstabbing (the same thing is taking Nissan themselves down).
Hawkeye was always and will forever be my favorite. My first car was a base model impreza Hawkeye, which while not as "cool" as the WRX was a lot cheaper
Who buys a WRX or an STI for it looking pretty? I feel like the WRX/STI has always been a "I don't care what you think, I just want to drive." sort of car.
I agree, but at a point when you could get a car of similar or better performance for the same price, that also looks better, it doesn't make much sense to get the uglier one unless you really like it or are loyal to the legacy of the car.
I absolutely agree
@@BrodyAnimates Sure you can get the GR corolla which is better on paper but you won't get it without 10k markups.
What sporty car would give you AWD, manual and practicality other than WRX and GR corolla? Not everyone lives in Cali. Some of us have to deal with real winters and would like to have AWD in winters
I still want to own a Blobeye. Love how they look so much.

"It looks like a hiking shoe" - could there be a more accurate description than this?
I went with the Mazda 3 AWD Turbo after being a decade long subaru owner. You hit the nail on the head. It's been the same car for 20 years with little to no real improvents.
If the mazda 3 came in manual transmission it would be the WRX killer. As it is, it's a no-go for me.
@@RPotter95 exactly. I was going to buy one when it was announced, then stated auto only, I chuckled and walked, and took my money with me

The fender arches are quite something but I’m more for the new STI
I love all of the first three generations. I own a bugeye and love it to death. I also owned a Hawkeye Impreza, and definitely think the Hawkeye is the best looking out of any of them.
Keep in mind a lot of people hated the bugeye when it came out. A lot of people hated the blobeye and hawkeye. Plenty of people hated the hatchback stickeye. Not to mention the hate that that evo eye got. Its just a subaru thing they always get hate when there's a new car
The 3rd gen hatchback with the wide body actually looks pretty good.
The most underrated gen
Not gunna lie not a huge fans of hatchbacks but they did it pre good!
The build that Throtl did was ridiculously beautiful! Believe that was a 13 or 14?
The 3rd gen STI sedan too. It’s the last decent size before the wrx became big
I've always thought each generation looked good in their own way, with the original always looking the best. I will admit that the front end of the new WRX has grown on me, but the rest looks terrible. Someone I talked to pointed out the rest diffuser acts as a shelf and I've hated it ever since.
It’s sad that we’ve lost that rally look and feel they offered us with that amazing performance
Now it looks like an old conservative guys grocery getter that can barely out run a kid on his scooter
WR stands for "World Rally", and "X" stands for the mathematical symbol for the unknown, that means its possibility is infinite. Many people also have other ideas what the "X" stands for, but this information comes from FHI/STi and was further confirmed by SOA.

Well yes, actually. Just ask anyone who has ever wanted one. When I was a teenager I wanted a stink eye CS400, and I still do Q_Q

i like the new WRX, i feel as though we are missing a big part of having a valid opinion on Nolans videos, driving what he is talking about.
They are already a small brand, they have their work cut out for them if they wanna stay a brand at all.
Its pretty easy- Make a hatch version of the WRX that looks cool and put a turbo engine in the BRZ which we have wanted for years.
@@ColoradoStreaming thats the worst things they could do. What they need is beefier outbacks, forresters, and ascents, The BRZ is probably the best car they have in terms of design
That classic WRC impreza has a mean look to it, love it. SVX has a similar look, like an upscaled sleeker big brother.
When I first saw it, it's not my favourite but it's pretty decent. It's a design I can see myself getting used to (unlike the new bmws).
The old subarus never really looked too good anyway. The car itself was just so good that people liked it anyway

I’m with you, I didn’t like how the VAs liked either at first but it’s definitely grown on me
My wife wanted a Forester when shopping for a new first car for her. As much as I wanted her to get what she wanted, I didn't think a boxer engine or CVT transmission was a smart choice long term. We ended up getting a 2019 Rav4 AWD XLE instead. Being the final model year we received $6k off msrp to sweeten the deal. She loves it and being a Toyota it's been very reliable for us.
Im not a fan of the rear tho. I think that was 2 steps back
ua-cam.com/video/GvbaJ43rdpw/v-deo.html
I think the new WRX will be like the A90 Supra when it first got introduced; everyone initially hates it but over time, people will get use to it

In black this is the best looking wrx, this is also the best wrx in years for tuning. Old STIs are overrated
A modern take of the gc8 body style is my ideal dream for the wrx

How does no one see that the new WRX is modeled after the Viziv concept!? Subaru has been teasing us with the concept for years, we knew it was happening. Look at the fender shapes on the concept, look at the front bumper, and rear bumper it’s all there!!

I agree 100%, I think bugeye and blob eye look the best.
Hoonigan is the only company that can make this 2021 WRX good looking. By of course completely remodeling the body and adding a sick wrap.
A sick wrap, spoiler, and straight pipe. The RICE special if you will
If I had Hoonigans money and Talent pool, I could make ANYTHING look good
The cars you're talking about were primarily designed and built by Vermont Sports Car, all hoonigan did was design a livery and slap stickers on.
I agree with most of the points Nolan made. A lot of people have forget that this was never a pretty car. We look back on the older models with the rose colored glasses. I would know, I have a bugeye and I think it's gorgeous lol
