We love horsepower but COME ON. 1000? 1200? 1500 HP? When does it end? Hennessey and a bunch of other tuning companies will sell you vehicles with WAY too much power because apparently this is completely necessary. The Monolist made us do this. This is the D-List!

its all usable. In CA you have to do 70-100 to enter the freeway in the Bay Area or LA. So yeah, we NEED it. XD
Texas has some casual 1600-2000 hp street cars, ive evem seen a few twin turbo viper acrs pushing like 2400-2500, boostlogic gtrs etc..
i regularly have to get out of the fast lane because im holding up traffic cruising at 90 mph lol

As a German, James did indeed make great Videos on RUF, Gemballa, AMG etc. but Europe has much more than that, including even older ones like one of the first Tuners ever "Kamei" of Karl Meier, who showed their first tuned Volkswagen Beetle in 1952 at the Geneva Motor Show.
There are so many! And some will probably hard to find Footage and Info on unless you speak German. Also all the Italian ones.
I wonder if i can e-mail Donut some Material, Links, so they don't have a hard time searching for Video Material in english, would love to!

SAE gross is simply the power a engine makes with no accessories
SAE net does not reduce by that much
80s sucked but my 87 shelby charger wass fun. the HP race really gets out of hand even in AWD at around 500hp on the street

Extremely glad you mentioned these old American companies, I always felt Yenko, Callaway and etc. were the old school equivalents to companies like HKS, TommyKaira, etc. If anyone needed a reminder, old school muscle had just as much style and fun as 90's JDM, just largely before our time.

You figure most of their exposure was thru print media or maybe television (probably MotorWeek or something similar). Probably not as easy to stumble upon a Twister II Foxbody (bonus points for even knowing what the hell it is) back then as it is now to see an HKS Skyline or something in the same spirit.
@@scytheman_ well cars like the Twister Mustangs didn't get much publicity because they were regional dealership specials where as the HKS Skyline was a Group A Touring car, point being if you want big publicity you gotta be on the world's stage not some regional stage

Not that Callaway absolutely destroyed everything with their own race cars, but they've almost got cult status sorta like Panoz. Weird and cool but only really known by racing nerds (I use that term as a compliment)

OMG I can’t believe you guys included that Covert Tuning Murci, “The Stig” as they called it. Man… you should do a deep dive in to that train wreck of a situation. The turbo kit looked ridiculous. I think pretty much every other Lambo tuner around at the time called them out to prove their claims on the dyno and the standing mile. There is hardly any video of that car moving under its own power. I think like ONE video was eventually uploaded of it running “low boost” while undergoing tuning and not coming anywhere close to their horsepower claims. Good memories.

It was R&T or C&D that had a great article on the Sledgehammer when it appeared. On the test track, when it only reached 226 (iirc) MPH, Reeves Callaway said there must be a problem. His calculations said it should go much faster. So the brought it in to check it, and they found that only 6 of the 8 cylinders had been firing. After it was fixed, it did 255 MPH. And it looked awesome.

All the news is talking about electric cars and here I am finally living out the hp wars that made the late fifties to the early seventies so iconic for me as a car enthusiast. Loving every second of it and can’t wait to see what the manufacturers can do, but most of all the aftermarket support. Love this time and it probably won’t happen again in my lifetime. Gotta love it!

I live in town of the yanko Chevys. Canonsburg pa just outside of Pittsburgh it's sad they let the building fall apart pretty much. It's still there but its not great
They do need to chill out!!, I called for a upgrade on my zl1 and they gave me this quote for more than I paid for my car, so I went with a different shop couldn’t be happier, Hennessy just sells its name.

3000GT VR4 was such an advanced car for its time when it came out. Those things were pretty cool IMO and i always wanted 1 when i was young growing up. I have seen and rode in a few base 3000GTs without the turbos. Never seen a VR4 in person though. Sucks they were so expensive to fix and maintain.
What’s even crazier is the Hennessy built exorcist is 2nd place to their Resurrection. 1200+ HP with a triple plate clutch manual. Freaking insane

I'd like to include the rare but there Randall Gremlin. 2600lbs with a 401 v8 turning 12.2 1/4miles between 1972 and 1974. Maybe not a super high hp build, but a performance model nonetheless

My parents took us to Disneyland in the 70’s for the first time. Being from Oregon it was a LONG drive at 55-60 mph. The CHP’s were ticketing anyone going over 60 back then, so imagine traveling most of the length of California going 55. Compared to today, it felt like you could get out and walk faster.
