Really amazing lesson, Graham! Thanks a bunch! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks! You too!
It would be helpful to know your method for determining how to get your depth of the cut at exactly half the thickness of the wood. Is it just simply measuring?
Using a center finder will work
If you have a marking guage, you can eyeball centre, then flip it and measure in from the other side - adjust until it lines up from both sides..
You got it!
I know someone who forgot to put the mic back :) Nice video, as always!
Sorry!
When I mark the depth of cut for half-laps I use a marking gauge set to approximately half the thickness of the stock. Then I mark from the face side of both pieces, one is marked for what to remove, and one is marked for what wood to leave. Since they're both done from the face, the two pieces end up flush even if they're different thicknesses.
Good idea!
I would have expected you to use a router plane to get the bottoms even and at the right depth.
Also possible.
Good afternoon Mr Blackburn . I’m new to woodworking and wish to learn traditional hand tool wood work. It’s great to find your channel. I’ve been oversaturated with power tool videos with huge tools and spaces. They make great projects but it’s not what I want to do .
Thanks and welcome
Wieder Klasse! Danke Herr Blackburn

video s are very good thank you
Will do!
I’m not sure if you have ever discussed the handle on your small backsaw. Could you do a bit of show and tell on that piece? I find the grain direction and burls on some of those old saws beyond compare.
Stay tuned..
Should we consider wood movement when we dimension the grooves?
Not if the wood is properly seasoned.
thanks
You're welcome!
