Dude you got lucky with that upper! When I rebooted mine I had to wail on it with a 10lbs sledge for a good bit (couldn't find the right ball joint removal tool to fit). But it finally gave.
2 years ago i had 555 lower ball joints installed in my 2006 lc. Noticed today that one of them is already toast and i don’t take the vehicle offroad and have oem sized tires on oem wheels. The alternative to 555 was napa and i tried to save a penny with 555 but darn it got me!
Supposedly the 555 are OEM? Maybe not - but they are what the "Land Cruiser Specialty Shops" push..so now that I think about it, maybe 555 isn't to be trusted.
So, Toyota doesn't make each and every part that goes into these trucks. They contract with vendors/suppliers, some of whom may actually be wholly or partly owned by Toyota. Sometimes, over the course of a particular model, the supplier may change for a particular part. I was under the impression that 555 was the supplier, or original equipment manufacturer, for these ball joints. I've heard Senkei (?) as well but I don't know for certain. Time to buy a Toyota control arm and inspect the ball joint in detail.
Nice video, I am looking to get my lower arm passenger side bushing fixed, as per my mechanic the arm and ball joint is in good condition. Is it possible only to replace the bushing? Also, can you recommend the brand for ball joints as OEM comes with whole arm…
The ball joint I used is in the video description. Sankei / 555. I believe they are the OEM for the ball joints. To answer your question, yes, the bushings on the control arms are serviceable, but you might have to do a little homework on IH8MUD to find the right ones. The arms will have to come off, obviously, to change the bushings.
@@thelandcruiserproject yes. Some voice over would be awesome. Perhaps some insight or whitty comment. I can't tell you how many times I put in my own expletives during that video
I know I need at least one of these, but and not sure if I should just do the ball joints or the whole arm. Just curious have you previously done the arm bushings? I have noticed that if I price out the bushings and the ball joint it’s about the same price to buy the whole setup installed on the arm. I assume my bushings need replacement since the joint does. In your opinion, would you replace all of the bushings and joints or just get the whole arm with everything installed?
To limit waste, there's a part of me that wants to just replace the bushings, but you could do the whole job crazy fast if you were just swapping the whole assembly. I haven't had to replace my bushings on the control arms but a similar job will be coming up soon for the rear suspension bushings and front differential bushings. I'll be pressing them out and reusing the arms and bars.
@@thelandcruiserproject Thanks, that’s a good point. I have been leaning in that direction wanting to keep as many original parts as possible. But then I wondered if I was just being foolish making that extra work for myself. I had not considered the waste aspect.
When screwing in the castle nut, if the bolt spins, does that mean it's bad? I had to use vice grip under the bushing so I can screw the castle nut in to put the needle.

My new ball joint went in crooked.. I’m going to have to remove the control arm and see if I’m able to salvage it. If not I’ll cut it, press it out and use a new one 😢
That's a bummer. Doing the maintenance yourself, while sometimes fun, informative, and cheaper, it can often cause more headaches than taking it to a shop...which unfortunately isn't always a home run either.
Damn thats a tricky job. I didn't realise those ball joints could be swapped. Thought a whole new arm would be needed. I think it would be more cost effective to buy the new arms if the uca bushes need doing too. Any chance of a link to that tool you used to pop the ball joint out?

@@thelandcruiserproject upper ball joint when taking it off. Seems like the easiest way. The clearance didn't seem like a issue. I finished doing ball joints and it seemed like a pain even with the impact. I used the same method as you cutting the stub off. Definitely made life easier.

Nice work. Appreciate you taking the time to make the post

What’s up bro I was the guy that bought your 80 my buddy just found your channel and told me, love the truck so far , also love the content👍
Thanks! I miss your 80...
Nice work, would you consider just replacing the UCA next time, or would you just do the BJ again? I replaced UCA on mine instead of BJ.
I would still replace just the ball joint.
Dude... That was a great video man. Doing this job tonight. Your vid is awesome.
Good luck!

Aren't they OEM?
I thought so.. Maybe a bad batch?
Not oem. You have to purchase the whole control arm to get oem.

Excellent tutorial! Thanks!
Is it more feasable at a shop in terms of labor cost to just swap out entire UCA or just ball jionts?
Always cheaper from a time perspective to just replace the whole arm.
Thanks for sharing good video, where can I get the locking plier?
Do you mean the c-ring pliers?

Another option would be to buy a new assembly and refurbish the old one and resell it. Pass it on.

I'd use 555 if I had to replace the ball joint just to get back home so I can install OEM control arms to keep the LC a reliable truck.

Leaking oil when holding a load for a while. Replaced some seals but it isn't cutting it anymore...
