Actually, if you look at the ancient shield while surfing, it's actually hovering off the ground, which implies that it's great shield surfing stats are an intended feature.
Someone give this man an award. I have been looking for Shield statistics for a while. Seriously though, that Ancient Shield does everything. It has a somewhat high shield guard stat, it can reflect guardian lasers without needing to parry them, it's the second fastest shield for shield surfing, it consumes five times less durability while shield surfing, and it's not extremely hard to get if you're good at killing guardians or know of the duplication glitches in the game. To top it all off, it looks freaking awesome.

Not to mention guardians are free kills if you can land reflects consistently, meaning you don't need to waste any other items getting the parts for it. Or you know... just Urbosa's fury and master sword to brutalize them.
@@rysea9855 You can actually give the pot lid the durability of the hylian shield using a pretty simple glitch. I personally use it to give the radient shield the same durability as the hylian shield, so I get the fastest shield surfing with insane durability.

I just found out that you can surf forever on the beach. I glitched the Hylian shield durability onto an ancient shield (not needed apparently) and surfed up and down the Rist Peninsula (the curly bit on the east coast) for an hour, gaining speed on seemingly flat ground. It works on all the beaches, just avoid the gravely bits. You can travel just about the whole coast in one go, there's some rocky bits and cliffs that'll mess you up, but even just standing in place and shield surfing again, you get back to speed in no time. The only time you'll stop is if you turn too hard too long.
It might even be intentional, since there is skimboarding in real life, and it consists of sliding across the wet area of the beach on a small wooden surfboard called a skimboard.
Interestingly 5 out of the 6 shields you mentioned and used are directly mentioned by Selmie the resident shield surfing champ. She even comments on them if equipped and only those all, ironically she knew the hidden stats the whole time!

The best reply if you checked it out was for the steel lizal shield (or reinforced) , she calls it "radical with all them sharp edges" like a California surfer its great and she does comment on the kite shield obviously, which I believe is where the whole "kite shield surfs great" thing came from. In fact, her comments on the different shield types was the first thing I thought of after I watched this vid of yours because I finally realized why she always commented on those shields. It was basically the subtlest of hints that these sheilds might have something special about them when it comes to surfing. Awesome to see that you were the first one to confirm this for certain!

Emma which honestly makes me so excited for BotW 2. Imagine, now that they have (at the absolute least) the skeleton of the physics engine and other mechanics, how much time they can put into those small details and the story and everything, it’s going to be fantastic
To anyone wondering, an ancient shield with the durability of the Hylian shield transferred onto it via menu overloading will last for a grand total of 15,996, which is roughly 4.5 hours of continuous surfing, not counting impact damage. Use this knowledge carefully. Or if you're like me, only have an inventory of durability glitched ancient shields
That's what I did on my first playthrough, got a durability up on the Hylian shield and transferred it over to my ancient shield. It's probably the most fun thing to have ever.

There's Link dying his clothes, upgrading his armor for the third and fourth time from the fairy fountians, having to get nakey on that shrine pedestal during a blood moon to unlock that shrine, shoveling 20 steaks down your throat all at once to restore your hearts, literally every time anyone in Zora's Domain mentions Link and Mipha in the same sentence, and flexing when you don't equip a shirt.
I knew that Radiant Shield was great for surfing, but it was only a feeling, I couldn't really tell why. The Radiant is my favorite shield in the game, I love its shape, colors, and now for sure its surfing stats. But also the Ancient shield has all those stats because it's pretty much a hoverboard, it floats above the ground, so less friction, and it doesn't touch the ground so less damage
Radiant shield is definitely the best, I mean come on the ancient shield requires a GIANT ANCIENT CORE what the fork nintendo. On the other hand, the ability to deflect guardian blasts and it only taking 1 damage point is pretty awesome
I was like you and always knew that there was something different about the radiant shield. I would always use it for shield surfing being that there is one near gerudo tower every blood moon.

So now that you’ve confirmed that the title of best Shield for Shield Surfing belongs to Ancient Shield..... I highly recommend anyone that hasn’t gotten the Hylian Shield to wait until it has a Durability Up+ Modifier. You can use menu overloading to *duplicate* the Shield before _transferring_ the durability over to a Ancient Shield for maximum Shield Surfing capabilities.
Excellent point! The Durability+ stat doesn't add much to the Hylian Shield's durability stat, as compared to other shields, so getting maxed out Shield Guard Up is typically seen as more impressive, as it goes from (an already impressive) 90 to a whopping 144
@@colbauer1426 I agree, I always go for he Guard Up buff for my Hylian Shield, that is when I am patient enough to wait to get it ;) I find Durability Up to be redundant, as you can easily buy another Hylian Shield from the secret vendor in Tarrey Town. It takes a long long time to break anyway, so the 3K Rupees it costs is pretty much nothing by that time.
I don't know but you can test it yourselve. Just make the same jump twice. The first with shieldsurfing, the second withou shieldsurfing. I'd guess it doesn't make a diffrence

I went half way playing until I felt like I wasn't playing right, because I didn't visit Impa first. Then when I start over and get a ways through, I ran into the thunder dragon. Never beat this yet.
It’s amazing how much of this information can be intuitively gleaned by the player even when basically all of these stats are hidden. I was shocked when the radiant shield was brought up twice, since it’s my favorite shield to collect- I love shield surfing and definitely prioritize my shield choices based on aesthetics first and surfing ability second. Really interesting video, thanks for making this series!
Wow I can't imagine how useful this will be for everyone it's great. Also like how you used the Lynel shield as one of the last useful shields all the time lol
Question: How does the "durability damage over time" really get calculated by the game? Is the game counting frames your shield is on the ground per every time you mount the shield to links feet or is it counting consecutive frames the shield is touching the ground (or does it check in a different way)? Basically, can you bounce low enough to not cause impact damage at intervals of less than a second to conserve durability or theoretically surf infinitely?
He explained it in the video, if the jump is minor it doesn't seem to take durability as opposed to getting full air time. And no, you can't shield surf indefinitely because the friction still takes durability, unless you're on snow or sand.

Ik where the phrase “the pot lid is the best for killing guardians is the best shield” originated, in daruk journal from the DLC champion ballad on one of the pages, it says “one of those weird cyclops guardian things malfunctioned and shot lasers” (or something like that) and then it says “the little guy (link) grabbed a pot lid and deflected the laser and saved the day” that’s where it originated :)

Just this past weekend, I was messing around in the Gerudo Desert. I didn't even start surfing from an incline but I went all the way from the cliffs near the 7 sages shrine to the shrine where Pokki is slumped over the Guidance Stone when you first get there. That's a LONG way and I surfed, at speed, on a flat even surface, all the way there from a standstill. I thought it was some kind of bug (I recorded it, even, because it was so strange) but now I know why....I was on the Radiant Shield. Thanks, Croton!
Hmm...Kleric has a video on transferring equipment durability, and long story short a glitch allows you to give any shield one point less then the hylian shield’s durability. Assuming I’m right and that means 799, (I’m going off the assumption that the hylian shield has 800 durability points) the ancient shield could become the ULTIMATE shield surfing shield.
yeah, if you want a good time and a lot of it. but then again you can also use the glitch to "repair" your shields, so i would go for the radiant shield.
Hey! Looking in the source code of the game, I found the way each enemy killed increases a hidden counter, and when this counter raises a certain number, some monsters change color. Do you think you can do a video on the topic ?
I'm so proud of myself for figuring out friction and impact damage on my own. Surfing is one of my favorite things in this game, and I mess around with it all the time. Now i know even more! Hopefully, Nintendo, if you're reading... please just include a "character stats" screen that shows Hearts/HP, stamina (numerically), current melee/bow/shield durability, attack power, defence, resistances (percentages), and buffs (percentage increase). It would make things alot easier to figure out!

Does the surfing "spinning" attack count as an impact? I used to try to use it to reduce durability use because it looked like Link spent the least amount of time on the ground, but if it does count as an impact, I guess it would be worse than just riding straight, right?
Would you ever consider a video explaining enemy stats and behaviour? For example, are certain enemies harder to use stealth on? What are the distances that enemies first notice you? I'm sure there are a lot of calculations and interesting number stuff that goes into the ai, too. When they are attacking NPCs, what determines when the NPC is knocked out? Do they have a secret HP stat? Can monster weapons have bonuses? Sorry, got a bit carried away. I love your vids, keep it up!!

If you look closely, you'll see that the Ancient Shield is actually a hoverboard and that it makes you float a little while surfing on it. Great video by the way!!!
I just transferred the durability from a fresh Hylian shield and put it on an Ancient shield and duped a few of them, lol. Still haven't broken a single one yet
@@rysea9855 5% difference. Plus, the ancient shield has lower durability loss. 800 durability combined with the 0.2 is INSANE. Second, the ancient shield has a higher shield guard, plus it deflects lasers in case you miss a perfect parry. It also is probably the coolest looking shield in the game- in my opinion anyway. If you dont mind duping frequently, or dont dupe at all, then Radiant is awesome, but Ancient really is just a Jack of all Trades.
@@jdmagic Ancient shield is expensive though, it requires a giant ancient core and a lot of rupees. Also it isn't as quite a 5 percent difference. If you have the ancient shield with 90% "efficiency" and the radiant shield with 95% "efficiency", the ancient shield will have 10% friction and the radiant shield 5%. Compared to 100% they are only 5% apart, but compared to eachother the radiant shield has half the friction, which means it can travel twice as far. Don't get me wrong, the ancient shield is amazing, but I'd recommend having a single radiant shield on you too, just for shield surfing. Maybe get one with a durability up bonus, or do the durability transfer glitch.
@@rysea9855 that's what I said- I pointed out that I I durability transferred from a Hylian shield and then duped a bunch of them. And yes I understand Radiant is 2/3 of the Ancient because that's how percentages work. A 800 durability Ancient will last way longer than an 800 durability Radiant. Plus, the Ancient has a higher shield guard stat, and if you miss a perfect parry on a laser occasionally it reflects it automatically. If you dont mind duping frequently, or you dont dupe, or you want to fill up your inventory with them, then yes, radiant shields are great, but I'd prefer to not do that.
Lots of good info here! Just wanted to post a small correction. Shields will only lose durability once every 4 seconds while shield surfing. If you swap shields before that 4 seconds is up, you'll never lose any durability. The 4 seconds is also modified by the RideBreakRatio value in the spreadsheet you linked. The Ancient shield can go a whopping 20 seconds before losing any durability from surfing (besides the initial impact loss, of course). That moment you have done three 100% playthroughs (excluding all korok seeds) an additional 3 decent full playthroughs experimenting with the physics and doing things differently, thinking you know it all. Damn, I used the kite shield because it seemed the most aerodynamic having the pointed end at the front. In my mind it makes the most sense. Gonna start using radiant shield now tho, thanks for this man

all of these mechanics really help to add such scope to this game. really helps make a world feel alive when you have these in depth mechanics so realistic and thought of.
I did the math, and if you surf on the ancient shield that is durability duped to have the Hylian shield’s durability, you can shield surf constantly for 5 HOURST STRAIGHT!!
My favorite thing to do is the shield surf next to an npc with the dark link outfit(to scare them), press y, then unequip shield. Their reaction of link dying next to them is amazing XD

Honestly when the Guardians ran amok and started wiping out hyrule, everyone would have been fine if the populace had all run to grab their pot lids.

Radiant shield is definitely the best, I mean come on the ancient shield requires a GIANT ANCIENT CORE what the fork nintendo. On the other hand, the ability to deflect guardian blasts and it only taking 1 damage point is pretty awesome
I was like you and always knew that there was something different about the radiant shield. I would always use it for shield surfing being that there is one near gerudo tower every blood moon.
The shield lady tells you a hint that it’s the best for surfing because she a pro at it.

So now that you’ve confirmed that the title of best Shield for Shield Surfing belongs to Ancient Shield..... I highly recommend anyone that hasn’t gotten the Hylian Shield to wait until it has a Durability Up+ Modifier. You can use menu overloading to *duplicate* the Shield before _transferring_ the durability over to a Ancient Shield for maximum Shield Surfing capabilities.

The Durability+ stat doesn't add much to the Hylian Shield's durability stat, as compared to other shields, so getting maxed out Shield Guard Up is typically seen as more impressive, as it goes from (an already impressive) 90 to a whopping 144
@@colbauer1426 I agree, I always go for he Guard Up buff for my Hylian Shield, that is when I am patient enough to wait to get it ;) I find Durability Up to be redundant, as you can easily buy another Hylian Shield from the secret vendor in Tarrey Town. It takes a long long time to break anyway, so the 3K Rupees it costs is pretty much nothing by that time.

I’ve observed that Link sometimes takes less damage from a fall if he was shield surfing. Is this real or just a fluke?
I don't know but you can test it yourselve. Just make the same jump twice. The first with shieldsurfing, the second withou shieldsurfing. I'd guess it doesn't make a diffrence

It’s amazing how much of this information can be intuitively gleaned by the player even when basically all of these stats are hidden. I was shocked when the radiant shield was brought up twice, since it’s my favorite shield to collect- I love shield surfing and definitely prioritize my shield choices based on aesthetics first and surfing ability second. Really interesting video, thanks for making this series!

Question:
How does the "durability damage over time" really get calculated by the game? Is the game counting frames your shield is on the ground per every time you mount the shield to links feet or is it counting consecutive frames the shield is touching the ground (or does it check in a different way)?
Basically, can you bounce low enough to not cause impact damage at intervals of less than a second to conserve durability or theoretically surf infinitely?
He explained it in the video, if the jump is minor it doesn't seem to take durability as opposed to getting full air time. And no, you can't shield surf indefinitely because the friction still takes durability, unless you're on snow or sand.
Zeldamods' page on shield durability has some info about how the game calculates it.

Ik where the phrase “the pot lid is the best for killing guardians is the best shield” originated, in daruk journal from the DLC champion ballad on one of the pages, it says “one of those weird cyclops guardian things malfunctioned and shot lasers” (or something like that) and then it says “the little guy (link) grabbed a pot lid and deflected the laser and saved the day” that’s where it originated :)

Just this past weekend, I was messing around in the Gerudo Desert. I didn't even start surfing from an incline but I went all the way from the cliffs near the 7 sages shrine to the shrine where Pokki is slumped over the Guidance Stone when you first get there. That's a LONG way and I surfed, at speed, on a flat even surface, all the way there from a standstill. I thought it was some kind of bug (I recorded it, even, because it was so strange) but now I know why....I was on the Radiant Shield. Thanks, Croton!
Hmm...Kleric has a video on transferring equipment durability, and long story short a glitch allows you to give any shield one point less then the hylian shield’s durability. Assuming I’m right and that means 799, (I’m going off the assumption that the hylian shield has 800 durability points) the ancient shield could become the ULTIMATE shield surfing shield.
yeah, if you want a good time and a lot of it. but then again you can also use the glitch to "repair" your shields, so i would go for the radiant shield.

Hopefully, Nintendo, if you're reading... please just include a "character stats" screen that shows Hearts/HP, stamina (numerically), current melee/bow/shield durability, attack power, defence, resistances (percentages), and buffs (percentage increase). It would make things alot easier to figure out!

Does the surfing "spinning" attack count as an impact? I used to try to use it to reduce durability use because it looked like Link spent the least amount of time on the ground, but if it does count as an impact, I guess it would be worse than just riding straight, right?
it's just an animation, it doesn't register as an impact
Would you ever consider a video explaining enemy stats and behaviour? For example, are certain enemies harder to use stealth on? What are the distances that enemies first notice you? I'm sure there are a lot of calculations and interesting number stuff that goes into the ai, too. When they are attacking NPCs, what determines when the NPC is knocked out? Do they have a secret HP stat? Can monster weapons have bonuses?

It's just an animation, you're still technically on the ground even if it doesn't look like it. No durability lost, but also no durability saved.
If you look closely, you'll see that the Ancient Shield is actually a hoverboard and that it makes you float a little while surfing on it. Great video by the way!!!
I just transferred the durability from a fresh Hylian shield and put it on an Ancient shield and duped a few of them, lol. Still haven't broken a single one yet
Ancient shield is good, but radiant shield has better friction. I'd recommend having radiant shield too
@@rysea9855 5% difference. Plus, the ancient shield has lower durability loss. 800 durability combined with the 0.2 is INSANE. Second, the ancient shield has a higher shield guard, plus it deflects lasers in case you miss a perfect parry. It also is probably the coolest looking shield in the game- in my opinion anyway.
If you dont mind duping frequently, or dont dupe at all, then Radiant is awesome, but Ancient really is just a Jack of all Trades.

@@jdmagic Ancient shield is expensive though, it requires a giant ancient core and a lot of rupees. Also it isn't as quite a 5 percent difference. If you have the ancient shield with 90% "efficiency" and the radiant shield with 95% "efficiency", the ancient shield will have 10% friction and the radiant shield 5%. Compared to 100% they are only 5% apart, but compared to eachother the radiant shield has half the friction, which means it can travel twice as far. Don't get me wrong, the ancient shield is amazing, but I'd recommend having a single radiant shield on you too, just for shield surfing. Maybe get one with a durability up bonus, or do the durability transfer glitch.
@@rysea9855 that's what I said- I pointed out that I I durability transferred from a Hylian shield and then duped a bunch of them. And yes I understand Radiant is 2/3 of the Ancient because that's how percentages work. A 800 durability Ancient will last way longer than an 800 durability Radiant. Plus, the Ancient has a higher shield guard stat, and if you miss a perfect parry on a laser occasionally it reflects it automatically.
If you dont mind duping frequently, or you dont dupe, or you want to fill up your inventory with them, then yes, radiant shields are great, but I'd prefer to not do that.
Lots of good info here! Just wanted to post a small correction. Shields will only lose durability once every 4 seconds while shield surfing. If you swap shields before that 4 seconds is up, you'll never lose any durability. The 4 seconds is also modified by the RideBreakRatio value in the spreadsheet you linked. The Ancient shield can go a whopping 20 seconds before losing any durability from surfing (besides the initial impact loss, of course).

I did the math, and if you surf on the ancient shield that is durability duped to have the Hylian shield’s durability, you can shield surf constantly for 5 HOURST STRAIGHT!!
My favorite thing to do is the shield surf next to an npc with the dark link outfit(to scare them), press y, then unequip shield. Their reaction of link dying next to them is amazing XD
