Thanks for watcing! I originally was going to upload this video for April Fools, but I didn't have enough time so here it is! Check out my Insta for more behind the scenes content: instagram.com/makewithmiles/
Making your own sandpaper? Well, we often take for granted the simple tools we use in our shops. In days of yore they blew sand onto paper coated in glue into tall silos. The finer grits went higher and the coarser heavier grits stayed low. Today's sandpaper is such a complex and specialized industry involving a plethora of resins and granules for various applications but, you showed that in a pinch, you can make your own. Well done, Miles! Loved it. Keep 'em coming.
Ok, I do visual effects for a living and I watched the handing of the sandpaper a few times on 0.25 percent speed. I figured it out. You had a stand and you placed the paper on it right? The paper looks like its layed on something for a moment. Exceptionally well done man. At first I thought you had a twin!
Haha you're spot on man! I noticed that it looked stationary for a second, but I didn't feel like re-keyframing the entire mask ;) Thanks for watching!
I am trying to paint a piece of plastic yard furniture, to give it a more natural sand or stone texture. This is the best tutorial I have found to accomplish it. Thanks
At least you got some exercise, and a nice trip to the beach. Beach sand is usually round grains, that are less abrasive. So a builders sand might have more bite. great idea 2x👍
Love your content. Fun info, longboarders make their own "grip tape" using a brush on epoxy and sand. It's a trick to have grip tape while still revealing the wood grain underneath (especially for bamboo decks).
Cinematography and editing are off the charts on this one. And honestly, I'm surprised the DIY sandpaper worked as well as it did. A fun experiment and an outstanding video! Thanks for sharing!
Wowsers that definitely a very interestin and useful video explaining this miles. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. God bless.
Thanks Nick! I've definitely started diving into color grading a bit more recently. No anamorphic lens unfortunately, just added the letterbox crop in Premiere 😂
Love your skill with taking and editing video! The scene running to the beach was awesome! It’s always awesome when you find ways to make products at home instead of just buying them. There’s tons to learn and always a possibility you could stumble across a better way to make something or a better end product.
nice work on the video! that was a cool experiment! :D i'm glad you didn't make it out of used kitty liter like I did. it didnt work at all and gave the wood a really funny smell. :s
I've got a 24" sanding disk replacing the sand paper requires cutting off the old disk... I was thinking can I resurface it? Maybe with an epoxy and a mettle oxide?
Top work on this video man. Going above and beyond on all levels of maker. I reckon Miles 1 and Miles 2 need to start a WhatsApp chat so you can keep the comms up 😜 Looking forwards to the next one Miles squad 👊
@@MakeWithMiles the first recorded instance of sandpaper was indeed made of sand, seeds and crushed sea shells. This was in China and was bonded to parchment with a natural gum. The type of sand used was specifically River sand due to the abrasive properties, normal (beach) sand has been smoothed down and as a result its not a good abrasive. The first use of sandpaper in the west was using glass paper, the first modern sandpaper based on silicon carbide grit was created in 1920. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

The sandpaper handoff was edited exceptionally well, as was the rest of the video. Nice job!
Thank you so much for taking to the time to watch it!

This is so good, and your VFX are seamless. Super impressive 🙌
Thanks Michael, the VFX were super fun on this one!

Bro, the editing on this. Excellent video.
Haha thanks Brad! I had fun with this one.
At least you got some exercise, and a nice trip to the beach.
Beach sand is usually round grains, that are less abrasive. So a builders sand might have more bite. great idea 2x👍
That's kind of what I was thinking by the end, it's not super practical but it was a fun experiment none the less 😂
@@MakeWithMiles It was worth the effort you went too. Interesting idea.

I was going to say, this sounds a lot like what I've seen on some longer boards (my cruiser has a deck that looks very longboard-y)

Time to start sifting the same and see what that gets us. Also different glue types. Sandpaper uses a type of resin so I dunno could be a series
This editing is phenomenal! Bravo!
Thank you so much!!
Respect how much time he spend on the video making, especially the intro and the moment he hand over the sand paper to himself :) talent
Love how you edited this dude. Pretty slick transition on the sandpaper handoff 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Haha thanks man, I definitely had fun with the edit. It was a bit of a different video for me ;)
Keep it up man, alot of us look forward to your videos.
Thank you so much Christopher, I really appreciate you watching my videos.
youre going to be mad famous one day with the incredible content you make
Great video man! Love the quality, cant wrap my head around you handing yourself the sand paper so smoothly!
Haha glad that it wasn't super obvious! Thanks for watching.
Really amazed by the high quality content there! The opening was dramatic and I loved it! Inspired me to make some stuff like this 👍
Great video Miles! And a flawless transition at 4:25
Thank you Johnny! It took a couple tries to get it right but it was pretty satisfying to see it work ;)

Thanks Jared! Glad you liked the video, it's definitely a bit different than my usual videos.
@@MakeWithMiles yes but that's a good thing once in a while.
@@SchysCraftCo. Haha definitely, it's fun to mix things up ;)
That was actually really interesting! Thank you for doing this!
Dude your creativity in the edit is incredible. Also loving the grade on this!✌️Are you shooting an anamorphic lens?
Thanks Nick! I've definitely started diving into color grading a bit more recently. No anamorphic lens unfortunately, just added the letterbox crop in Premiere 😂
Really awesome editing. Made a simple video idea rather interesting
Extremely well done! Your presentation is extraordinary.
Bro I'm stoned I just searched up a random video about sandpaper and I found this it's cool bro I fw it that's creative shoutout from chicago
Super cool video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks for watching!!
Nice production skills dude, I dug this video, keep grinding and making more 💪
Very interesting idea! Also really well made video!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it. 🙏

Thank you! I had quite a bit of fun shooting the beach scene, it was a bit of a departure from the usual video but still an interesting experiment ;)
i'm trying to make a 3d printed object more grippy. this is roughly what i was thinking about. i'll probably use some sandblasting grit, though.
Nice job fantastic from Sri Lanka
Cool, funny story, awesome video 👍 Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it ;)
Great job!
Buy a seive kit and you'll have hardware store grade paper. Also I think they use tar paper backing or stronger
nice work on the video! that was a cool experiment! :D
i'm glad you didn't make it out of used kitty liter like I did. it didnt work at all and gave the wood a really funny smell. :s
Haha thats super cool you tried to make sandpaper as well. I imagine it would have a bit off a funny smell. Thanks for watching!
I thought you were going to spit some fire for a sec 😮
So THAT'S why it's called sandpaper 😮
Haha yeah 😅
That's awesome. I like your sand paper better. You should sell sheets of it or give them out with the purchase of a shirt or something. :)
Honestly if you grind the sand down, you could possibly fix the smoothness.
Im still trying to figure out how you handed the sandpaper to yourself so seamlessly
I've got a 24" sanding disk replacing the sand paper requires cutting off the old disk... I was thinking can I resurface it? Maybe with an epoxy and a mettle oxide?
It's the same idea, just people that make sandpaper didn't just wake up that morning and say, I'll make sand papper and just sell it today.
Will It work with table salt for my sand for my project i don't have any beaches near me i can't buy it at the store cause i am on a fixed income.

Nice video, new subscriber
Honestly modern sandpaper is a lot more advanced than people think. Check out the video about it by New Mind
Maybe if you used actual abrasives powder and better glue you would have better quality and consistency
Just be careful and make sure its legal to take beach sand in your area/state. Not sure if that's what you actually used or not just looking out.
Use a metal scraper next time, you'll save time and money :)
I think you should have gone a bit scientific and compared sand, salt, sugar, cement, carborundum what ever and used a seive to apply the abrasive.
nice video what's your twins name
👍
I'm pretty sure sandpaper is not made of sand. Its made of pelletised metal oxides.
pretty sure how that’s how it used to be done long ago, but it’s super complicated now!
