  • Hua Lamphong has about 3 weeks to go before it's closed down. Here's a look at the legendary station's past and future, plus a look at the local neighbourhood and working life at the station. The iconic station has been open for over 100 years and been the host of many happy, and sad, arrivals and departures. Please don't let it be another mall!

In 15-20 years shopping malls will be closing up as they are in other Western countries. Keep the historical train station and put some boutique restaurants and convert part of it into a museum and outdoor park.

And it is so sad, that the majority of young people in Thailand, I had met during my time of teaching, are not interested at all, while I am watching this with a tear in my stomach. Since 1979 I had used this train station fifty times or more.

On my first trip to Thailand in 1976, I arrived at Hua Lampung Station from Malaysia. I complained to the station staff that I had paid for a sleeper, but I had to sit up the entire journey. Months later, a $US2 cheque arrived at my Australian address. I was impressed by the honesty of Thai railway staff.
I stayed nearby at the infamous Thai Song Greet Hotel for 25 Baht a night. This hotel is now closed. I think this hotel was copied for the Bangkok hotel used in the film "The Beach". The hotel was so bad, I moved after one night to the Station Hotel for 50 Baht a night.
In 1976 Khaosarn Road was not the backpacker centre, it later became. The area around Hua Lampung Station had that distinction.

Yet another awesome production! The music track at 12:31 is a nice touch. The WW II bomb shelter included in this episode will still be needed. There’s an invasion of too many shopping malls and condominiums taking place throughout Bangkok.

Gosh, the second time I was in Bangkok (10 or 11 years ago) I stayed in a hotel across the street from Hua Lamphong. If I knew then what I know now I'd have crossed the street and had a good look at it.

Another captivating video of you Pat. A masterpiece of balancing the past, the present and the presumably sad future. A shiny addition to your clip from a few months ago. Each of your videos has something particularly valuable that draws me into your story. I would like to expressly thank you for this and look forward to more episodes. Greetings from Sattahip - Gerd 🌈🍀💖🌴🌈

Thank you for sharing, the history of Houlampone Station 🚉, it’s very interesting and it’s would be sad if it’s tuned into the mall or plaza , I love that place , every time I visit Thailand I would go there to look at historic and use the train to travel to the other part of the country, I always feel so proud and happy with historical about Thailand, if they would build the mall and still connect to train station and keep historical the same like in New York city rains station that would be cool to see too

Thank you for this thoughtful, evocative video essay. You showed us what the station has meant to the people over the years. You have a gift for incisive analysis... ... if they destroy the beauty of Hua Lamphong and leave the Brutalist buildings standing... a crime.. I found your site due to an article in the BBC on this remarkable train station, so glad I saw your work. (I subscribed.)

I'm sad to hear that Hua Lamphong was being redeveloped. I suppose it's inevitable given it's location in the ever growing city. So many memories from 2000-2003 for me. I'll never forget the variety of people and the sights. The street side barbers! I hope the building doesn't go. Suk 11 hostel, Hua Lamphong.. even Pantip Market. Great memories that made me who I am, and who can forget Pink and Anil. Thank you for your kindness.

I enjoy your videos but this one is the best for me.... I am an ex UK train driver and rail enthusiast to boot, and love old style railway architecture. I have been out of Hua Lamphong a couple of times and will miss it. I wanted to come back before it shut by the bug has put paid to that, so thanks for uploading this. I understand the main reason for closure was the amount of level crossing involved in getting out of central Bangkok, the trains had to wait for the crossings to clear before the barriers could come down for them to cross, it causes delays to both trains and road traffic at the same time! Another bit of old world Thailand disappears........

    • @BangkokPat
      @BangkokPat 2 роки тому

Thanks mate, the level crossing thing was the reason given in the press, I thought it was just speculation but during rush hour it is a pain. I am a subscriber on your channel for the last few years, I love all the 80s London streets and the buses, because it's the time when I was a teenager riding the buses, tubes and trains all day.

The only reason I visit the Thaiger these days.
It was kind of the local area to put a sign up for backpackers written in Thai hahaha
It would be nice to see a history of how Bangkok was impacted in WW2

6:06 - I think I know where this is. It's right behind Bobae Market. I've come out the back of the market and walked across the tracks a couple of times. There are eating establishments (and a tiny karaoke joint) right up against the tracks. In the afternoon there isn't much activity, maybe I should make a point to come by in the evening like this. 8:00 - I was right! If this is smoky and sooty with the diesel locomotives one wonders what it was like back when steam engines were in use.

One of the reasons I left the west and Emigrated to Vietnam was because of all the fast food Conglomerates that spring up in London and eventually the whole country . Thankfully McDonald’s Kentucky fried chicken and all the other fast food outlets have not taken hold in Vietnam they have not been successful. Hallelujah . Thank you for the upload it’s very interesting I hope the station is not turned into another Soulless mall .

In January 1976, at the Hualampong Station, I met a monk called Phra Widja Noipa who took me around Bangkok by bus. In his company, I tried to pay the 75 Satang fare, but the coins were returned to me as I was travelling with a monk. Phra Widja Noipa showed me photographs of mostly black US servicemen on R&R in Bangkok. He had met them also at the Hualampong Station. It must have been a big change for these soldiers from the jungles of Vietnam to wandering around Bangkok with a Buddhist monk.
Phra Widja Noipa explained that he waited at Hualampong Station to befriend foreigners and thus improve his English.
Though travelling with a Buddhist monk saved me 75 Satang a trip, sometimes we had to wait 2 hours for an unccrowded bus. Phra Widja Noipa was worried about accidentally bumping unto a woman and thereafter having to perform penance. He invited me to stay at his temple. However, when I saw his bare cell with a mattress on the floor, I rejected his offer.

Hua Lamphong station will be sorely missed. I would love to see the upper floors of Hua Lamphong (where Pat is standing) be converted into a movie theater. The atmosphere of Hua Lamphong certainly would fit with that old 20th century motif. What is the Orient Express (slight weird edit there) and why did Pat say that it was "horrific"? Something I'm missing?
