I'm a Malaysian and we studied Thai history in school though not in detail but enough to understand the overall. I'm surprised that King Bhumibol was not mentioned at all in this video. He was very well respected in this region and when he passed away there were a lot of Malaysians paid their last respect to him at the Golden Palace.

@@patweethongsak7093 First of all, I admire a lot of his influence and capabilities, particular his diplomacy skills and international affairs ; Reflecting how Rama V handles colonization threats from 2 super powers. He also make good use of many people in the parliament and supports/advise some good politicians into power (Anan Panyarachun, Prem Tinsulanon, some others too much names) But what Thai’s are taught are kinda of an obvious propaganda ; that he directly develop the communities and civilizations himself. The famous ‘so-called’ 4,000 projects where he took all the credit can be criticized in many ways ; It’s still the government money/our tax, he uses his name and he solely take credits but it also takes lot’s of other people to help and even without him it should be government responsibility anyways, most of his 4,000 projects aren’t really impacting a large difference as some ‘projects’ are just building a dam or roads, basically he’s mostly just kinda advertise/promotes the event, which is actually useful, but overrated. That’s the main part where people adore him, which is in all ways a propaganda. Overly progressive university, Thammasat University’s students, have been accused of cooperating with the communist movements, which is like truth, also was rumored to attempt the abolish the monarchy, having nuclear weapons hidden in the university, and other stuff. The US government (Against communism) funded some support, the military, police, and many royalist groups (Nawaphon, Village Scouts, Red Gaurs) gather and storm the University (AKA Thammasat University Massacre), many students were killed, and their bodies became piñatas, so much gore and violence, so much hate, and the person behind this, who gathered and support the royalist groups, the police and military force, the US funds, was no other than King Rama IX, there are evidenced photos of him giving supports to these people. (This is kinda controversial, like to fight against communism threats, still, was the call to massacre students just?) When you say so many politicians ruin the country, so I assumed if that’s true he must try to stop them, but even those politicians don’t dare to go against him, I believed he didn’t really go against corruption or the real politicians or else there should be his opposites existing, or maybe he just took everyone out secretly. When Taksin Chinawatra came to power as PM, he was a populist and use many tactics to gain majority votes that seemed unfair, still he was a very effective leader and the economy boomed hard, this guy go against many ineffective bureaucratic affairs and was hated by many public officers. Many try to get the King to dislike him with rumours, but what he was accused was more of a ruse and fake ; rumors that he tryna overthrow the monarch, yet he bow and respect the King. The King also felt challenged because he’s the only PM he can’t really control, thus sparking the red-yellow shirt conflict. The current military dictator, Prayut Chan-Ocha who ousted Taksin’s sister, Yingluck Chinawatra, was also backed by the King. So probably the King never really fight these politicians or corrupted schemes, or else he would have face similar things Taksin did, or worse, these bureaucrats are actually his backs, the King himself knows how to play politics, so I guess rating him as a flawless hero was too much, he’s a well played politician, but still human to me and did lot’s of flaws. The worst thing he left Thai’s was no other than his corrupted family ; The Queen had far more presences in various dark affairs, his son, the current King Rama X, has the worst rumors of a human being possible, many of his family members have been involved in some shitty events. So.. yeah, he really have all the power, but these things still run, if he really fight against evil, as the propaganda have spoken, he wouldn’t be this overrated.

As a Thai, I really do appreciate this video. However, to clarify some small mistake, it's Taksin not Taskin. Phraya is a higher ranking noble title in Siamese aristrocratic hierarchy, equivalent to Marquess or so. His birth name is Sin and was the lord governer of Tak province prior to the fall of Ayutthaya Kingdom. Thus, he was commonly known as Phraya Tak (Lord of Tak). Even though later proclaimed king and had his official royal name, he is still dubbed as King Taksin (a combination of his former title and his birth name) until this day and primary history books always refer to him as King Taksin which is quite a special case since most of Siamese/Thai kings are always referred to by their more official names not their birth names. (tbh, I have learnt his royal name once but totally forgot about it. It's super lengthy and full of auspicious Bali-Sanskrit words. We Thais know him as King Taksin anyway)

India has a massive influence in Thailand and SE Asia that was completely ignored in this video. The city/kingdom of Ayutthya is named after Ayodhya in India, the birthplace of Lord Ram. The king of Thailand is himself named after Lord Ram. He is traditionally consecrated from the water of the river Ganges. The emblem of Thailand is the white elephant Erawan, derived from Airavat, the vehicle of Lord Indra. Buddhism came from India as well. The Thai script is derived from Brahmi/Tamil script. A lot of the words used in everyday Thai come from Sanskrit as well. A half baked documentary to say the least.

Even before the Siam revolution, criticism of the monarchy was common and very well documented even before Rama IV. Only in the reign of Rama 9 did criticism of the king became a taboo. All this is a success because of the support from the CIA to counter communism.
As someone already mentioned, it's actually "Taksin" and not Taskin, also, pronunciation in Ayutthaya is u like the letter u, so not Ayatthaya like you tend to say. Siam did had a treaty with US indeed, but US cannot be considered as a "colonizing" country, unlike the British, and the French, that were respectively in what is now Burma (and India, Bangladesh) for the first one and Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos for the latter. A good general overlay of Thai history, given the short length of the video. I studied mostly the French Revolution in college for my history degree, and from the fall of the Bastille to the defeat of Napolean at Waterloo was only a period of 40 or so years. thai is modern term invented in 1939 to mean free Every source calls Lanna as a Lao kingdom, up until 1893 Thai suppression of their Lao ethnic association. Every Ayutthaya manuscript call them Lao people, and every Siamese document up until 1893 called them Lao people,
it was Thai National policy in the 5th reign to erase all ethnic associations with Lao people. It was well known prior to 1893 that the people of Lanna(ChiangMai) and Nan were considered and called Lao people, but there was a strong propaganda program to separate the people of Northern Thailand with the people east of the Mekong. Suppression of their ethnic association with Lao people. “Breazeale notes that since this version was rewritten in the Fifth Reign, it should be treated cautiously, since the author not only brought the history up to date but also may have 'corrected' some passages in the period prior to 1788.[8] Breazeale also feels that the date of the composition can be determined tentatively from the terms Lao Phung Dam ("Black-belly Lao") and Lao Phung Khao ("White-belly Lao"). According to Breazeale, these were old terms known to the Thai, but they seem to be used here to indicate The Origin and Significance of the Emerald Buddha the northern region (Lanna and Nan) and the upper-Mekong region (Luang Prabang), which, during 1890-1899 were officially designated as the Lao Phung Dam and Lao Phung Khao circles, respectively. Breazeale believes that these terms would not have been used in such a composition after 1899, because of Thai policy of suppressing ethnic identifications in official toponyms. Given the Thai government's efforts for the years prior to 1893 to find documents in provincial towns to support Thai territorial claims in the Mekong basin, Breazeale guesses that the anonymous document was written before 1893, hence his tentative dating of 1890-1892.” >Eric Roeder is an M.A. candidate in the department of Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. he is spending the 1999-2000 academic year examining the educational opportunities for the physical handicapped within Thailand

Thai people are descendant of many ethnics, you shouldn't expect the irrational sudden extinct of all indigenous ethnics after just the coming of Tai immigrants. The majorities of Thai lineages are actually the ancient Mon (indigenous) and Tai (immigrant from China, chased away by Han Chinese then migrated south). Mon are people of Dvaravati kingdom (a kingdom to the west of Isanpura, kingdom of the first Khmer). Dvaravati's Mon civilization is the predecessor of Khmer civilization. Dvaravati itself inherited so many cultures, religion, and knowledge from ancient India. There are many civilizations around this area that inherited prosperities from India so no one can actually claim the origin but India itself. Cambodians who claim originality are just the uneducated. They misbelieve they originated all civilizations of southeast Asia but in fact their Khmer civilization is but the last of the ancient civilizations of ancient southeast Asia. You can check timelines of Dvaravati, Srivijaya and Sri Kaset compare to Khmer empire and see for yourself. After the merge of Mon and Tai people who became the first Thai group following the fall of Khmer, the modern history of the land had begun. All the Cambodians know is they're the predecessor to Thai modern civilization but with their lack of education, they never aware that many civilizations of this land had came before theirs. Some of them even misbelieve that Khmer civilization is the origin of the universe.

I'm a Malaysian and we studied Thai history in school though not in detail but enough to understand the overall. I'm surprised that King Bhumibol was not mentioned at all in this video. He was very well respected in this region and when he passed away there were a lot of Malaysians paid their last respect to him at the Golden Palace.
thats great as a thai im also confuse why he did not talk about rama 9 because he helped develop the country alot
they omitted a lot of Thai history
He have great influence and roles, though, I disagree he’s as great as Thai’s propaganda taught us, he have many dark moments and I think overall positive impact, he’s still overrated
@@ryuishisama5149 Who you talk about rama9? Can you tell me many dark moment? I'm Thai and I learn and see Thailand developed by project and speech from him, see many things ruin by politician coruption. You should go out and see by your eye. I'm sorry if my english wrong.

First of all, I admire a lot of his influence and capabilities, particular his diplomacy skills and international affairs ; Reflecting how Rama V handles colonization threats from 2 super powers. He also make good use of many people in the parliament and supports/advise some good politicians into power (Anan Panyarachun, Prem Tinsulanon, some others too much names)
But what Thai’s are taught are kinda of an obvious propaganda ; that he directly develop the communities and civilizations himself.
(This is kinda controversial, like to fight against communism threats, still, was the call to massacre students just?)
When you say so many politicians ruin the country, so I assumed if that’s true he must try to stop them, but even those politicians don’t dare to go against him, I believed he didn’t really go against corruption or the real politicians or else there should be his opposites existing, or maybe he just took everyone out secretly.

Fake Khmer history, Khmer Emphrai does not exist. According to new research and evidence, Thai or Siamese people already live in this region and the DNA of Khmer people does not match people in this region. Khmer people migrated from Java Island.
Butttt...why thailand and cambodia always fighting in social media...kinda funny because i thought only malaysian and indonesian often arguing over thing such as traditional dance, music instrumenr etc

Otherwise, that's a good resume of the rich and lesser known history of Thailand.
Ayuttaya is Ayodhya, the capital of Lord Rama.

Love this video! We are in Thailand (documenting our full journey here on YT) and Thailand is awesome! Thanks for the history!
This is better than whatever bs my teacher was spouting in high school and I’m Thai.
Can you do Burma also because it’s next to Thailand
I think this is too simplistic. Even as a foreigner who has visited Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Malaysia over 10 times, I can tell that this channel is just tip of the ice berg of Thailand history.
Thank You so much for making a video on the Great Siam Empire - Thailand . I so wanted to know more about it !!!
Thailand is not a Siam kingdom. They stole them culture and history, those Thai are from south China
Siam kingdom only rule in middle and south province, never at north

Great job wrapping up our country history to make it easier to understand!
There’s one correction. It’s Phraya Taksin, not Taskin. Keep up the good work! 🙏
Very interesting, I never knew it was so "busy"! I recently saw a list with the former great empires of the Medieval/Renaissance period (none are European).
I always wondered why the border on the peninsula was so crooked. That wanders greatly with Burma/Myanmar. I'm glad the Thai finally have a stable, peace loving government. The Myanmar people are not so fortunate. It is sad the Thai were not able to extend the western boundary all the way to the ocean. Thousands more people would be living a better life.
From a topographical map it appears there is a 500-600 foot high ridge that the border was established along.
‘peace loving’??? dude, our goverment’s a result of a coup. i mean they staged an election 4 years later but at least 200 votes were bought. there are still protests. Thailand always has problems with coups. there had been like 19 or so coups in the past century. it is better than myanmar here though, but i wouldn’t say the government’s stable.
Also there are nearly 2 million Burmese living in Thailand working low paying jobs. You can say that Siam won in the end.
Thai is a people from south China. They're not native
The original Thailand divided by 3 kingdom
Cambodia (Kampuchia) in north, mon (Burmese in middle) and Malay at the south.
Then those chinese came here and defeat cambodian and Burmese. Only Malay we're pushed and now ruled by Thai in southern Thai.
But the original border of Malay Peninsular is at kra ithmus (segenting kra)
Thai stole siammese culture and language, cambodian knew this but because of Thai sidang with west, they can't do any thing

A good general overlay of Thai history, given the short length of the video. I studied mostly the French Revolution in college for my history degree, and from the fall of the Bastille to the defeat of Napolean at Waterloo was only a period of 40 or so years. Not even half a century and whole book series have been written on it and people still feverishly debate a lot of it. You covered entire centuries going back to the prehistoric pre-humans to the last few years. So while some very important things were left out, still, a good job overall. I lived in Thailand for 3 years and it was an amazing experience.

Lanna Lao Kingdom not Siamese
thai is modern term invented in 1939 to mean free
Every source calls Lanna as a Lao kingdom, up until 1893 Thai suppression of their Lao ethnic association.
“Breazeale notes that since this version was rewritten in the Fifth Reign, it should be treated cautiously, since the author not only brought the history up to date but also may have 'corrected' some passages in the period prior to 1788.[8]
Breazeale also feels that the date of the composition can be determined tentatively from the terms Lao Phung Dam ("Black-belly Lao") and Lao Phung Khao ("White-belly Lao"). According to Breazeale, these were old terms known to the Thai, but they seem to be used here to indicate The Origin and Significance of the Emerald Buddha
the northern region (Lanna and Nan) and the upper-Mekong region (Luang Prabang), which, during 1890-1899 were officially designated as the Lao Phung Dam and Lao Phung Khao circles, respectively. Breazeale believes that these terms would not have been used in such a composition after 1899, because of Thai policy of suppressing ethnic identifications in official toponyms. Given the Thai government's efforts for the years prior to 1893 to find documents in provincial towns to support Thai territorial claims in the Mekong basin, Breazeale guesses that the anonymous document was written before 1893, hence his tentative dating of 1890-1892.”

There was nobody called "Chao". This word means owner or commander, and is coupled with the word "fah", which means sky or heavens, to form one of the royal titles which come before the names of Thai monarchs to this day.

In addition to Seni Pramoj refusing to declare war on the US, Thailand also had a strong resistance movement called Seri Thai (Free Thai). They were trained by the OSS then sent into Thailand.
