Thank you so much Mr. beef I just got back in from checking both my tractors that was having the same issue and you are right my friend that fixed both of them without a problem thank you for sharing your experience I thought it was a wiring issue but turns out a very simple fix thanks to your amazing videos thank you sir we do appreciate it
Another good video. I really enjoy these as I have owned these garden tractors for a long time and always interested in learning more so Thanks. I am still on the quest for a 455 diesel and am really anxious to own one. I have a 425 right now that I am getting ready to rebuild the motor but may wait until fall as summers are really busy
I have a 425 but it has been swapped over to a 455 diesel (the kawi broke the timing gear, and the frame was mint, but the 455 I had was stored in salt water it's whole life) so I made 2 into 1. Mine was mowing fine, then I was smelling some burning pvc, before I could turn around, the deck stopped mowing... Pulled into the shop and there molten plastic oozing from the PTO solenoid in the back. If this doesn't fix your mower, check the solenoid. Mine was a dead short then it burned a wire open.
friend has an issue with them popping the 15Amp fuse on the right side of the column , regarding the tank, he said the hose from the pump in the tank weaps so needs clamps on it. and for spindles he bought the stens complete assemblies as the pulley splines get worn so might as well buy a complete and get pulleys as part of the deal
No, mine the only time the PTO shuts off is when you push the PTO button or you push the brake lever other than that forward and reverse PTO never shuts off, I'm sorry, I do own a 455 and it mows 5 acres every weekend and does all tiling for my friends garden and box blades my driveway, etc. etc. Very proud of my 455.
What year is your 455? There are some distict electrical differences in the pre 1998 and the post 1998 machines. The Reverse Implement Operation switch was added in 1999. This addition changed the electrical designs substantially. This switch should not (base on what I know) be on early 4-5 machines. I will have to look this up though. I have not looked at these electrical diagrams in a few years. EDIT: I went back and looked the RIO switch and bracket was added after serial number 70,001 which was the start of the 1999 model year. Catalog ST632974 in Deere parts.
Thanks for the informative vid MrBeef! Have you ever seen an issue with the 5/8" threaded adjuster that is used to limit the downward travel of the 3pt hitch arms? I have a 455 and the upper end of this adjustable threaded rod has pulled out and bent or broke the bracket that holds it in place. Does this adjuster have any affect on the mower deck travel? My 60" mower deck doesn't seem to have much upward travel. Any advice is most welcome!
hey thx for the good vids. I have a question related to this video. I have a 425 that is having issues with the PTO. it cuts in and out, at first I thought maybe it was just low on hydro fuild so I topped it off. it worked but only for a few minutes again. the PTO light stays engaged, before the blades cut out the deck will surge. I have cleaned the yellow switch/ brake switch, seat safety and used contact grease to insure a good connection. if brake is applied the pto will not engage or light up. if I get up off the seat the mower will shut off so I'm assuming those are working correctly. any ideas would be greatly appreciated, we can email if u like as well.... thx man
Great video, @mmrbeef! I have an issue where my 2001 JD 445 starts and idles fine. When I engage the PTO the engine and mower deck both drag. Once engaged, the more I step on the accelerator, the more the engine bogs down to the point where it almost cuts out. When I disengage the PTO, the engine runs fine. Even stranger, after about 5 minutes of mowing on even ground, all of a sudden everything 'loosens up' and all runs great. I just put a new PTO switch in and sprayed electrical contact cleaner on the connections. I don't want to keep running the 445 with this drag. I'm about ready to pull the deck and check the spindles to see if one of them has the bearings going. Short of that, any suggestions?
Hi ya everyone....... I’m looking for any advice.........please....🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ I have a JD 455 with clam collector on the back.... I’ve been having problems with the clutch slipping well I think it is?? When the drive is put in it barely turns the blades or collector, it seems to sort of generally sort of brushes the grass with no power there but the engine is running fine and the all other hydraulics steering deck lift back forth?? Had a solenoid switch of which is opening and closing....??? ANY IDEAS GREATFULLY RECEIVED THANKS
There are a number of tests you could conduct. I would certainly test your solenoid. Also make sure the fluid level is correct. There is a possibility your clutch disks could be bad, however, that is an uncommon issue, but not unheard of.
If I were looking at it I think I would inspect the engine and the belts and then go from there. One of the problem areas can be water in the transaxle if it has sat outside for any length of time. Water enters through the shifter handle.
mmrbeef no I only did it to help out it fixed both of my tractors we really appreciate your videos brother you’re a very smart man I threw switches and a bunch of and lots of other things to try to rectify the situation but your fix fix them thank you
Me Beef my 455 will run for about 30 min with the pto engaged and then it over heats and bogs down, if I turn the pto off it runs fine and cools down, any suggestions?
Have you taken some 20-30 psi compressed air to the radiator or tried to rinse it out? There is a chance your engine is just getting warm and the tractor then shuts down the PTO. That is where I would start and go from there.
Well I spent 30 minutes blowing it out then I mowed for an hour without it overheating but it started to big down. I’m thinking it’s a fuel thing, I replaced the main filter awhile back so I guess now I have to check the fuel pump filter. Any other ideas?
@@51sicboy The Pickup Filter on the fuel Pump is plogger, A Slime Develops in diesel fuel, My (2) 455 both did it . I remover the Fuel Pump & one I was able to clean the other was rust, dirt & Solid & replaces it, Deere price ? $ 16.??
I have a similar issue with my 455, but mine is not overheating. It would run for a bit then start bogging down. Shut down the PTO and play with the throttle and it would start running good. Then rinse and repeat. I changed the fuel filter and it has a new fuel pump which I can hear running. Unfortunately the last time it bogged down and died. Now it won't start.
Yes it has. Granted it doesn't bother me to any great extent. I bounce from machine to machine and they are all so different that it is almost second nature to reach for different controls. On the 455 the PTO is on the left on the X748 the PTO is on the right.... no foot control on a 31! Haha!
Mine works great all summer, but when Snow Blowing in Cold it is a Constant , Play Forward / Back & it will come on & Most times in reverse it does NOT stop the blower, Been messing for some years with this, Only acts up when I really Need the Tractor
THANK YOU! This solved the same problem on my son's tractor - and without the "think time" you had to put into it. Appreciate you sir!

Hey great video. Had deck off and was using bucket a must have knocked off connecter. But was able to fix mine from your video
I would just zip tie it to bypass it. One less distraction to remember when backing up while mowing/snowblowing.

I have a differential stuck, won't come back up. Got any ideas what it could be?
Is there a part number for the little spring on the L shaped bracket

Found out today after taking my deck off that this 455 doesn't have said switch.

Interesting, RIO has been a sore spot for JD Owners for many many years.
