The bittersweet melancholy that is his music.
bittersweet symphony
nah “bittersweet melancholy” does not make me think “hopeful”. ur simplifying it way too much for the sake of simplifying it
@@makcferonIt might not make you think that, but it's nearly exactly what melancholy means by definition
Exactly the words I thought of. Melancholy/bittersweet is my favorite emotion
This is the most eloquent I've ever heard xqc speak
He really looks like x
Crying because I thought it was him at first 😂
Porter actually has talent though
@@waxcavern his aim nowhere near as good as my winston main
Don't you fuckin dare disrespect Porter like that.
I think the Japanese are masters of that. Most Japanese music is the feeling of "we're in a cruel world, but I have hope that it would be better" kind of thing.
Any recommendations for japanese music?
@@rayanm288 dang, some japanese music snobs would hate me for this since most of them like japanese jazz fusion (T-Square / Casiopeia) or city pop. I mainly listen to jpop idol music (ex. Sakura Gakuin), japanese electronic music (ex. Snail's House), J-metal (ex. Babymetal). One good song to start with is Racing into the Night by YOASOBI ua-cam.com/video/x8VYWazR5mE/v-deo.htmlsi=9UtD8smPy-kTwFK5
That's one prime example of happy-sad music for me. Enjoy!
@@rayanm288Try I want to love this world too, by Kano, sad and a bit happy

Porter is honestly the goat of EDM in my opinion
Really
Fact
He’s definitely one of the greatest producers of all time.

Facts
Sad Machine really embodies this perfectly as well. Such a legendary song.
He made it so well in Get Your Wish too. I love this song because it feels like super hopeful for me at the same time that shows this quiet sad feeling too
am i the only one who hates this feeling that the song gives? like, i love this song, but it puts me in a TERRIBLY dark place mentally. I tend to avoid AMAZING songs with this emotions because of this issue.. anyone relate?
@DREARBEATS I kind of like more sadder/scary music, I love Deep Breath (Persona 3), Wisdom Cries (AURORA), and Unreasonable Behavior (OFF game) because of how uncomfortable and strange they feel. It's hard to make those feelings on purpose when talking about music and media, so when it hits right, even if I'm scared, I can't help but like it
@@ateliebiabonne thats a different feeling, youre talking about fear. it doesnt make us sad or happy. Im talking about music that sounds so happy that it hurts.
thats why i personally prefer songs that are less emotional (sad or happy) but rather scary, edgy, or dark.
@DREARBEATS ohh now I get it, sorry for getting it wrong! And... idk? I kind of like to feel happy/positive/hopeful, like with Voids (Patterns) or Maya's Theme and Memories of School (also Persona 3), I'm pretty negative and apathetic myself (in the meaning of not experiencing many emotions) so it's good to have a song to remind me/help me feel something else, even if it hurts
@@ateliebiabonne i understand your point of view. Music is complex.
Your music actually touched me so deeply. There is a passage where it says "And when I'm better, we'll do everything
I gotta stop making promises I can't keep". That instantly reminded me of my grandmother that passed away, I was 12 she was suffering from Alzheimer and her dream was to see me graduating from collage, she said when the moment came she would be there in the crowd cheering, slowly the disease consumed her but she never forgot her love for me, even if she thought I was her son from time to time. She died when I finished my first year of collage, I was 17. Hearing this music brings all the memories I have of her, it's sad but at the same time comforting, thank you so much for making this kind of music, I hope it brings comfort and hope to everyone that listened to it like it did to me. Sorry for my English, it's my second language.
I once cried and laughed at the same time when I was drunk, and it literally tickled my brain... XD

The final chorus had a slight change (from 4-5-3?-6 to 4-4m-3-6) and I caught that melancholy feeling. Nicely done.
i hate that feeling
Yea I was trying to figure out the chord progression he's talking about...
I was pertaining to the chord progression on the "So let's pretend a little longer" line in the chorus. Hope that helps.
He really good at recreating this feeling fr
He somehow takes all those feelings and brings them together so well, and what i feel from his music is hope and ambition
He described his music PERFECTLY.
Particularly “Language”. It gives you ALL of those feelings - and it hits you like a freight truck.
…and with so few words. It says a lot without saying much at all.
My favorite Tom waits quote "I love beautiful melodies telling me terrible things"
all of The Smiths songs basically
I always think of that type of sound as "nostalgic". Like it's happy, but also a little sad at the same time when you think back on good times because they're in the past.
Porter can we 185 bpm jersey club battle
This explains why I immediately liked him from just hearing one song! I really love Owl City for making sad but hopeful music and Porter's music gives me a similar feeling
That is 10000% how I feel with music. I could never really put it into words either, but that sounds pretty darn close. That’s it.
Sea of voices is still one of the most profound things I have listened to.
melancholic music has always been my favorite, where it's happy but also sad at the same time
Considering what Goodbye to a World means to me, what he said makes perfect sense and really resonates.
I call it “in search of sunshine” music. It’s knowing that there is something better just over the horizon
I needed this song last year more than anything. It came out just in time because I lost my best friend and my grandmother to cancer. This song hit me especially hard, but it helped me cope so much.
I think what he is talking about is the soul getting uplifted to heights it never reaches in day-to-day life.
Happy sad is seriously my absolute favorite Aswell
Dude is such a beast and the feeling he’s talking about is one he was able to capture in a way unique to himself imo
"I've tried so many times and failed to convey this complex feeling"
*_THE ENTIRE 'WORLDS' ALBUM_* : 👁️👄👁️
No wonder his musics resonates with me quite a lot.
What he's trying to do for his art is what I'm trying to find in art, bittersweet.
Introduce a problem, but also introduce some form of comfort at the same time.
Fragments of time does this so well for me personally. The melody just puts a smile on your face but there’s something in there that makes you feel a little sad.
Porter and The Killers are masters of that feeling. Fall Out Boy too some extent too.
Literally the goal of my favorite playlist. It’s like nostalgia. It hurts so good.
This is exactly what I love. Novo Amor nails this feeling as well.
This bittersweet feeling you get especially in video games and anime absolutely destroys me like getting hit by a train. That emotions that makes you get a pit in your stomach I can't explain it but I am a total sucker for it haha.
"ill cherish even the pain of seeing you this way" is how i tend to explain the feeling
Ah yes that's exactly why I really like this song! For my recap this actually happened to be one of my most played songs which was unexpected for me, but I think whenever I wanted to listen to music at the time I was drawn to the feelings in this song.
I personally think porter is a musical genius. I also feel like many people don’t understand that feeling of music that he’s trying to describing.
thought this was xqc at first
YES this song!!! The best capture of this
Thank you for everything you do. Everything you are. ^-^
& all you ‘ve held us through. Its been a hell of a ride so far.
The intro to fall of civilizations podcast captures that exact feeling and I’ve never been able to explain it properly but it is amazing
Xqc on his alt.
Thats why his song always be on top of my list
That is how I would describe and feel about a come of his songs!!
Yes. This. The closest word I found is "nostalgia", but it's not quite right.
Porters portrayal of melancholy is one of my favorites in all of the music I’ve listened to
Look at the Sky made me feel this feeling
he perfectly described the feeling I'm going for 👌
This is why porter is a legend
He isnt. Only 12 year olds have ever even heard of him.
I remember listening to night/day/work/home by CFCF and crying, and then laughing at how good it felt to cry at this music, and then crying again because the music was So good, and then repeating that for the rest of the album
Bro, that part is literally my favorite part in the song, nice to know why :)
Why porter is one of the best to ever do it. You can have an entire group of people experiencing different feelings while listening to the exact same thing.
SaidTheSky’s Never Gone fulfills that for me.
No wonder I've loved his music so much and for so long, I feel the EXACT same way about music and practically all media.
This happy sad feeling is something that feels disproportionately present in Japanese media, and music specifically. There are chord progressions that evoke this feeling that are far more common in anime and video game music than anywhere else. I had attachments to a lot of the same media as Porter growing up, and have a similar intense affinity for that sound in music
It’s not just “happy melody, sad lyrics.” There’s a wistful, hopeful melancholy that Porter has always aimed for, and I think everything goes on is a perfect encapsulation of
Think he was describing bittersweet. Truly his songs hit that for me.
I was OBSESSED with Tiesto in the early 2000's. Saw tiesto live(also my first concert) and porter opened. Happy-sad is exactly how I felt first listening to porter for the first time, life too. The first minute or so, was so sad, but then it makes you feel like you can turn your life around in seconds, and you feel it. I remember going home and listening/watching Porter Robinsons - Language on repeat. That song/music video alone is exactly what he says in this video.
he's one of the greatest of all time 100%. cause his music makes me cry without me realizing why every single time man
Fog by Radiohead is my favourite happy-sad song for me, its so lyrically miserable but the music feels like a hug from a friend while your having a panic attack, it's such an underrated song and it's it's beautiful. (The studio version btw not the live one)
Studio version is goated, I think the chimes really make it so bittersweet
I really like married life from up its a happy then sad than happy than sad again😢
Non piano version with the bass is my favorite.
It's perfect
I stumbled upon a vtuber song recently (matches what another comment said lol), I think it's supposed to be a sad song, it mostly is, but in some sections it confused me on what emotion should I have felt with the way she sing. It gave me a familiar feeling and started remembering media that gave me a similar feeling, the main thing that popped into mind was a robot voice singing in a melancholic way, so I just started typing things like "sad robot" for a while until I stumbled upon "Sad Machine", which I don't know if it was what I was remembering, but still was spot on. I realized that this type of robot voices are great at alternating between emotion instantly, that vtuber singing managed to do the same thing, ironically for a bit I was questioning if her singing was an AI voice (not in a negative way, and she wasn't AI).
Then I clicked on this short, lol.
Melancolic melodies written in a major key
Also the lyrics
In Portugal they have a word for this : Saudad
Thats basically my favorite too.
where does porter robinson post these breakdowns? twitch?
This is from a Twitch stream he did back in July. The VOD is still on his Twitch
That chord always gives me goosebumps
Owl city has this kind of feelings/vibe and the reason why i love his songs
when I'm feeling happy I'm listening to your music. When I'm feeling sad I'm listening to your music. It is masterpiece
Juxtaposition is my favorite thing to experience in music. More often than not, these tend to be my favorite songs
Ambivalence is when so many interconnected emotions are simultaneously existing inside that you want to cry/laugh, dance/freeze, and revere/blaspheme at the same time!
You’ve succeeded on many levels to achieve this feeling in your music!
This song has been on repeat since it came out for this same reason. Sometimes i smile, sometimes I worry of the future and a LOT of times I just downright cry. It’s so good and it really touches my soul every time I hear it.
Can you tell me how is this song called? I'll like to take a listen
@@fernandomf969 It’s called “Everything Goes On” by Porter Robinson
This man gets it.
porter you are the premiere alchemist of happy-sad
well porter i gotta say you're doing a fantastic job of conveying that feeling
GOAT
Porters musics is beyond explaining its just gorgeous😭
it's tragedy. tragedy in the greek sense, that's what he's describing. like euripides plays. they're devestating and yet often jarringly hopeful and beautiful
it's also nietzschean tragedy but that's a whole ass other thing
The moment he described the feeling, I knew he captured it in Everything Goes On. He gets it a bit in every one of his songs, but that one is one of my favorites. Alongside Shelter, which captures a similar feeling.
and that is why he is my goat. tried to copy this for my album im releasing. Critical but hopeful at the same time.
Melancholic but passionate
And ur doing it perfectly my man!
Under the bridge does this so well with the major to minor switch
This!! Porter is one of the best because of the duality of light and dark that he incorporates into his music. But also, can we talk about Spitfire Porter? He may feel indifferent about it now but he has always been a musical genius.
Fully Agree with him here. There is a lot of art that made me feel things but art that does melancholic and positive at the same time stays with me way longer. And if it is related to another medium like a movie or a series it will burn itself into my brain forever (for example the shelter animation does this for me)
You are a genius ❤
He’s talking about being drained
perfect explanation of his music... god
It's really interesting ngl.
It's like...he is like giving this hopeful feel while also not trying to pull you away from reality.
Not like "oh everything is happy and hopeful"
Its more like "Though the world is cruel, we can still survive it and get through the storm" type shit
Idk what i was yapping about there ngl lmao🗣️🔥🔥⁉️‼️⁉️‼️
Happy Sad is a great way to describe it 🎯
I like how Porter just described "Shelter" exactly.
I FRICKIN LOVE THIS SONG
The outro to shepherdess had me staring into the abyss. That shit is wildly good
It's the feeling of being sad while crying happy tears
Yup, that pretty much describes Porter's music.
I completely agree with this statement! 💜🌙
The intentionality wow
i like midwest emo and potter robinson music
this guy could collab to eat the market
Yeah this is how I perceive your music.
i love u porter
It's because it's the IV-V-vi chord progression that gives you the feeling of sadness and hopefulness at the same time
can you give me an example of this in chord names? like c maj g maj idk my music theory is terrible.
I think shoegaze really gets close to that feeling
