One fun little headcanon I've had for a while about the in-universe 'card lore' about all the archetypes that spun out of Yugi's deck is that Yugi's monsters were once all part of a classic D&D/JRPG-style adventurer party who went on all these big quests together, representing the arcs of the show. And when the party finally disbanded after their final adventure (ie; when the anime ended), each of the members would go off on their own solo adventures, representing all the archetype development they got:
Buster Blader became the Destruction Swordsman and adopted Buster Whelp, Gaia formed his order of knights (my theory that many of the Gaia Knights are actually various members of an ORDER of knights founded by the og Gaia), Summoned Skull returned to the Dark World and became a powerful Archfiend, the Poker Knights formed their own order, etc.

So, funny story. You're not too far off.
See, there's a series of monsters called the "Skilled Magicians". There's five of them, and they all share an effect. When they have three spell counters, they summon a different monster. The first two were the White and Black magicians. They summon the Buster Blader and the Dark Magician, respectively. Later on, we got Blue, Red, and Brown. They summon Gaia, Kuriboh, and any Archfiend (despite what TGS says, the Summoned Skull DID become an archetype).

1:05 you ask what those cards have in common: Kazuki Takahashi was into table top like DND, so Yugi's deck is really DND themed, at least in the beginning. Even Duelist Kingdom, if you consider tabletop roleplaying, is basically roleplaying so that's why the Castle Of Dark Illusions scene worked. It's stupid to us but not to a table top player trying to figure his way out of a situation.

    • @Modie
      @Modie 3 місяці тому +7

This has been true for most of the series. Yes, they seemingly follow the rules more closely in Battle City, but most duels still revolve around one big boss monster being summoned and you having to find a way around their effects. In Battle City, those were mostly God Cards, but also Exodia or Bakura's ouija board deck.

  • @evodolka

i personally saw his duelist kingdom deck as a sort of odd D&D party, and then when they broke up after the 1st adventure, they ended up forming their own stories themselves
this is just how i saw his weird hot pot of monsters personally though
it would make sense with him being a king of games, and what not

Dark Magician, Summoned Skull, Gaia the Fierce Knight, and Buster Blader are all relate to the light and dark chaos magic theme according to their lores. Dark Magician is a dark type that has its light type alteration/predecessor Mahad, Summoned Skull has the fiend magic attribute that can summon lightning, Gaia the Fierce Knight is the pre-evolution of chaos soldier (Black Luster Soldier), Buster Blader has dark element and is the fusion comrade of the aforementioned dark magician as well as the Yin Yang counter relationship to the infamous light dragon (Blue Eyes White Dragon).

I actually really wish we had seen more of YUGI in Yugi's deck. When you think about it, Yugi's deck doesn't really match his personality type, which is kind and shy and emotional. The deck they used throughout Battle City, among other arcs, more so reflected the Pharaoh, rather than Yugi. Or rather, their shared soul. It's why it was so flexible and easily changed around. It isn't until Yugi is truly on his own in the Memory World Arc that he has HIS own deck that reflects HIM. I like the use of the term "flavors" for each of his decks you can mold your own to be around, and honestly...ngl a stall/defensive strat isn't a bad one to rely on. The best offense, is a good defense. Plus some of HIS own monsters are just god damn cool asf and deserve more attention.

In a similar vein, I wish that Konami would make an Arkana Dark Magician deck. Maybe make it so that its magic cards only work on its version of DM (Darkening Magician?) and vanilla DM cards to prevent it from just being included in standard DM decks.
Arkana has a line about designing his deck around taking Yugi's DM away from him, so maybe that could be its theme? You get your DM on the field and have to sacrifice it or your other cards to remove cards from your opponent? Maybe give the DM a recursion ability to bring it back from the graveyard if it's sacrificed to use its abilities? Maybe they can special summon themselves at the cost of some lifepoints like a built in Dark Magic Curtain?

@@blunk778 they were archfiends day 1 they just weren't translated properly. Plenty of early cards weren't dubbed properly into their archetypes because archetype synergy and support wasn't really a thing in the earliest days of the game. That doesn't make them any less part of the archetype. If you were to use that logic you could say any card that wasn't made with day 1 archetype support wasn't always a part of their own archetype but that doesn't make sense especially since a lot of them spawn around supporting one or two initial cards and building around them as is the case with the archfiends but the same is true for basically every card showcased in this video. You're argument hinges entirely on a solely Western and uninformed perspective it's entirely moot.

I think it would have been cool if BLS got other monsters for each extra deck type. It’s really random how there’s a link monster and nothing else. They could be centered around using the level 4 beginning and evening twilight knights. The gimmick could be they each need 1 light and 1 dark to be summoned. The synchro could have the ability to make one of the knights a tuner, similar to the summoning condition of cyber slash harpie. The XYZ would be rank 4 instead of 8, but could be a search or banish from the graveyard to activate the effects of the level 4 knights

This would be based prominently on Breaker the Magical Warrior along with the Silent Magicians, but would also have Mystical Elf, Magician's Valkyria, Odd Vindictive Magician, and possibly Magician of Faith.

Giant Soldier of Stone + Feral Imp + Winged Dragon of the Fortress + Beaver Warrior + Big Shield Gardna = A deck that resembles sort of a fortress defense wherein Giant Soldier of Stone is like the defensive fortress/wall, Feral Imp is the gargoyle perched on top, Beaver Warrior/Big Shield Gardna is the generic footsoldier and Winged Dragon of the Fortress is the offensive defender which shoots fireballs at approaching forces.
Gandora kinda exists as a deck already, i'd probably make Koumouri Dragon a support (Maybe a searcher for Gandora?) since its actually a Dark-Dragon type which fits with Gandora.

Honestly, I just want to see retrains for a lot of Yugi's Duelist Kingdom monsters that haven't yet gotten it. Yes, it was from a time when Kabuki Takahashi was just writing card game duels because it was what they wanted but had free reign to design the rules and monsters as he wished, which is why there's virtually no monster overlap, unlike even just by Battle City when monsters usually came in duos or trios (Gazelle and Berfomet, the Magnet Warriors, the Poker Face Knights). Only the most significant single monsters from that early got retrains over the years (Summoned Skull, Gaia/Curse of Dragon, Giant Soldier of Stone, Celtic Guardian). Give me a cool redo of Beaver Warrior, Winged Dragon Guardians of the Fortress, Mammoth Graveyard, Feral Imp and the rest.

I hope that we get a deck based on Season 0 mechanics if that makes any sense. Say, a deck revolving around a field spell that could equip special tokens to monsters revolving around different field spots, or make each column count as a unique field. The monsters would gain very powerful effects if equiped with the proper token/in the right column. The monsters would be based on Yugi's Season 0 cards. Now THAT would be an awesome Yugi deck. What I kinda love, is that a good few of these archetypes have grown so large that you can make like 2 or 3 decks out of them.
Also the Summoned Skull, does sort of have its own deck. With the various Archfiend cards of different types that all count themselves as Summoned Skull when on the field, but that series needs more support to be able to play on its own.

One series of cards that is directly related to Yugi's amalgam are the Super Magical fusion monsters. They're are directly support for Dark Magician, but they are meant to represent the entirety of Yugi's monster lineup. It's very sad to me that that connection gets lost in translation since the "Super Magical" part of the cards are cut entirely.
I still want a Super Magical card for Osiris. Would be a cool "ultimate boss" for Yugi's deck. Though the symbolism of that might make it unlikely to happen.

mystical elf could make for a cool archtype, play into her defensive style and make monsters loose attack to do damage back at them. It could be a whole elf kingdom with different elves as the monsters or even doing something like the danger!! cards and base all the monsters on celtic or old medieval "mystical" creatures.

I'm legitimately surprised that they didn't try to mix them all into one deck, like with Joey. "Dark Magician's Knight/Dragon Knight - Gaia", "Dark Magician's Dragon" that counts as any dragon used for a Dark Magician fusion, stuff like that. Even "Dark Magician's Familiar - Kuriboh" would've been a nice card name, at least.

of all the cards that are left the Celtic Guardian or Summoned Skull would be the most reasonable and predictable ones. They already have some random supports or new forms so why not make them into a proper deck.

Personally, I would like to see a Mystical Elf Archetype. They could probably make other mystical elves with special effects while in defense mode. Like negating Attacks or reversing them or preventing cards affects that attack you directly or allow your monster to attack directly. This could work well with swords of revealing light and mirror force. making a nearly impenetrable defence.

Big Sheild Gardna has its own archetype actually. Similar to Kuriboh were it has variations of itself of archetype for different series. Like there is Red Garfna for Red Dragon Archfiend/Resonator, Ghost Gardna and Junk Gardna for Yusei's Junk Archetype, and some others. Celtic Guardian could be attributed to Noble Arms loosely since there is that variation of him along with obnoxious but doesn't connect that well. Marshmallon has some other similar cards like Marschmacaron and maybe some others that i dont know of but its very little like the Silent Swordsman/Magician archetype. And random note: I'm surprised Konami never made a fusion between Big Sheild Gardna and Millennium Sheild. I always thought those to went together when I had them in my deck when I used to play Eternal Duelist Soul on my Gameboy Advance SP

Hey idea for a what if video. I been thinking about Yu-Gi-Oh GX and rewatching it and two things occurred to me during it. 1: in the duel with Aster and Jaiden before Jaden gets neo spaced And Aster summoned Pheonix enforcer, Sebastian explained that all the hero fusions have an alternative form like pheonix enforcer. So what are those fusion's. 2: What are the rest of the hero fusions we are missing. Like what if Necroshade could fuse Burstintrix or Clayman Fuse with Avian. So on and so forth with the rest. I think both of these ideas are worth a ponder 🤔

Celtic Guardian is just Link from The Legend of Zelda so it would be pretty cool to see a deck in reference to it like Celtic Beast, Princess, and so on but it feels very overdue to have a Magician of Black Chaos deck considering how little support it has while also being part of the Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl cards.

As someone who has cataloged and organized every printed card from the manga and anime used by almost every character, Yugi has at least 300 cards attributed either to him directly, a branch of support, an effect related to a card, or through shared use in a Tag Duel. (85 to Yugi and 245 to Atem) From the top down, Yugi/Atem alone have access to these archetypes and decks:
    •Dark Magician
    •Dark Magician Girls
    •Summoned Skull
    •Gaia the Fierce Knight
    •Kuriboh
    •Palladium
    •Face Knights
    •Magnet Warriors

Kaiba has 205, minimum, attributed to him, with the affiliated archetypes being:
      •Blue Eyes
      •Union Machine
      •Virus Traps
      •Chaos Dragons
      •Vampire
      •Thunder Dragon
      •Obelisk the Tormentor
Joey has roughly 148 cards to his name, with affiliated archetypes being:
      •Red-Eyes
      •Gearfried
      •Summoned Skull
      •Flame Swordsman
      •Goblins
      •Jinzo
      •Legendary Fisherman(Umi)
      •Fortress Whale(Umi)
      •Penguins
      •Battleguard
      •Fire Warrior
Mai Valentine has 64 cards so far, split between Harpies and Amazons along with the other offshoots she played.
Marik Ishtar has 55 cards to his name currently, but very little in terms of archetypal support outside of Ra.
Bakura has roughly 59 cards to his name, including the most recent support.
Surprisingly Bonz has at least 59 cards to his name, but this is more so due to the Wight deck and his focus on a more generic Zombie deck.
Mako has 40 cards, again generic Umi and Water support along with offshoots.
Weevil has roughly 55 cards to his name, he really loved his insect cards.
Rex has barely 30 to his name directly, but it’s generic Dino so it’s definitely more.
Tea has roughly 33 cards to her name, mostly Magician Girls. Though, through a major technicality with Seiyaryu, she can also have the Starry Knight deck.

Summoned Skull does have an archetype of it's own. They're just called the Archfiend Skull archetype because Summoned Skull was a translation that didn't quite reflect the name of the monster. To be fair, at the time they translated it, the Archfiend archetype wasn't a thing yet, so the TCG didn't know they should've done a more faithful translation.

Technically Summoned Skull and Celtic Guardian have archetypes that desperately need support, as in they can't really operate alone, but they exist. For some reason Mystical Elf is a Blue-Eyes support card. Magic Cylinder and Mirror Force has support with Kaiba having a monster for Mirror Force and Yugi's Dark Magician basically taking the Magic Cylinder and folding it into it.
And notice that nearly every deck that's come from Yugi also has a Dark Magician fusion to pay homage to it.
Also the Millennium Deck is Solomon's deck. That's why it has a Blue-eyes in it. It's Solomon's Blue-Eyes.

  • @BusterBlader02

In fact, the deck of the same Jonouchi (Joey) is very fruitful for creating entire archetypes.
I recently noticed that Jonouchi used such a monster as Battle Warrior until the very end, although it was useless, both in terms of defense and attack, it was useful only once in Duelist Kingdom, and then at most as material for tribute , but Jonouchi continued to use it, and since he was so attached to him and the audience, I think, remembered him well because of this, then why not turn him into a separate archetype or tie him to some other archetype, as for example was with Red-Eyes+Gearfried, but it never happened.
A similar problem also applies to Alligator's Sword, Baby Dragon, Time Wizard, Swordsman of Landstar. And the first two can be turned into an archetype like Gaia + Curse of Dragon Yuga, you can also somehow tie Time Wizard and Thousand Dragon to them, but no. It’s generally a shame for Time Wizard, they tried to give something, but they abandoned it. And Swordsman of Landstar is generally an interesting situation, unlike Battle Warrior, it at least received a remastered version of the card, like Yugi’s Celtic Guardian, but unlike Celtic Guardian, Swordsman of Landstar had the same effect and most importantly, it had an archetype, in the anime, and all that remained was to transfer it and adapt it for reality, create more support, but no. And it's sad, I'm sure I named a smaller share of potential, maybe not effective, but at least interesting Jonouchi decks.
(Sorry if English is bad, I used Google translator)

Technically the 4 Gandora monsters do count as an archetype but I agree it needs its own archetype like you can revamp Beaver Warrior, Celtic Guardian, Winged Dragon Guardian of the Fortress, Silver Fang, Feral Imp; all those Normal Monsters into Gandora monsters and it would be OP when Giga Rays becomes banned or limited to 1.
