WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HOTEL BEDS? ⚠️

I had too many bad experiences while moving cross country. I got bedbugs in one hotel and my dog was WAY too interested in one spot on the comforter in another. The third night's place had a strong fragrance when we checked in, and then the next morning it faded to reveal that the place REEKED a weird smell that I couldn't place. I found rusty razor blades with the sugar packets in a coffee station once. Weird, nasty stuff goes on in hotels.

      @VAwitch 11 місяців тому +10

Eh - not great, but in *most* hotels, I suspect the sheets & pillowcases & probably the duvets/blankets are washed more often than 95% of homes.
Comforters = nasty & those get folded out of the way. Same for any covers that aren't 'linens'

Hotels gross me out, that’s why we rarely travel at all. We would usually drive straight through. In our seventies now, just to hard to do that anymore. When our kids come home I know they travel, so I get stress that they are going to bring unwanted guests with them😬

I learned from my Norwegian upbringing to always air out my wool/cotton duvet every morning. I hang it over the door while eating breakfast and make the bed after getting ready. Then I air it, and pillows, outside every time I wash the covers.

I usually wash sheets every two weeks but I change my pillowcase about twice a week. I do wash them in hot water even though I know it's not necessary. I wash my mattress cover about every month or so. We had to have my son's apartment treated for bed bugs a few years ago. It was process of heating up the whole apartment with a huge furnace and keeping it hot for a certain amount of hours. No chemicals but they had to take some stuff out of the apartment like candles etc. It was very expensive but did the trick the first time.

I’m obsessed with clean bedding but I don’t expect anyone to do it for me. I’m sheet washer 2-3 times a week, clean pjs every night, clean shower washcloths every use. Mattress protection and pillow protection a MUST. Those get washed maybe one every 6 weeks. I own and manage vacation rentals as well and my beds are always pristine!

It only takes a few minutes to change the beds if you have two sets or more for each bed you are under no pressure to get the laundry done immediately, here in Ireland we don’t use dryers all the time line drying whenever possible, I cannot understand people not line drying when they live in hot places where the laundry is dry in an hour.

My throw blankets are used as a barrier for my dog from my comforter, so it gets washed quite often! The sanitize setting on my washer plus the Clorox laundry sanitizer in the fabric softener tray does a very good job of getting out dog smells. For my comforter, I usually take it to my local laundromat about every 6 months and use one of their large washers. It typically only takes about an hour from wash to dry. Download a show or movie on my iPad and keep myself entertained while I wait. As for the duvet cover, look up the burrito method for putting the cover back on the comforter. It’s super fast and easy!

Hanging out my pillows and down comforter in the hot sun in the summer, AND hanging them outside as well on a frigid, sunny winter day is one of the best ways to freshen them in between washings. UV rays from the sun kill bacteria and viruses, and freezing temps kill off dust mites. And sheets dried outside are one of life’s little pleasures-- and I do it any time the weather cooperates.😊

For anyone who does not think they need to hoover their mattress: using a clean stick hoover on maximum power run it all over the mattress. You will be shocked at how much white dust is in the container. Years ago I had a demo in my house for a Kirby vacuum cleaner. The sales man hoovered my mattress, emptied the dust into an ashtray and set fire to it. The burning skin smell was utterly disgusting. I bought the hoover!

As for hotels, you get way you pay for. If you’re going for cheap, then things may not be as clean. If you fork out the money then those hotel linens best be ironed and crisp. There better be a towel rolled into the shape of a swan, and a chocolate on the pillow. Hahaha

There was a Reddit video the other day where the husband worked an office job and showered every morning but his wife wanted him to shower again at night before bed otherwise she wasn't going to let him sleep in his own bed. There were a LOT of comments; most of them from people saying you have to "wash off the day" at the end of every day (even if you showered in the morning). A lot of those people claim to have AC all night so they're fine all night but apparently in Florida people sweat all day long and need to shower every night? Haven't they heard of AC for offices and buildings in Florida? And why are you okay in the morning "because you have AC all night" but an office worker who has been working in AC all day is not? Anyway, I pointed out that _everybody sweats at night._ Everybody. This is why you need to launder your sheets. I recommend no less than once per week.

I worked in a field that required travel and was therefore sleeping in hotels 5 or more days a week. For context, let me first say that as a child my family was poor, so we NEVER had the opportunity to stay in a hotel. As I got older and began making my own way in life I did begin to travel and for a time thought that there was no better experience than to go on vacation and stay in a hotel.
Once my work required me to essentially live in a hotel during the week I began to "feel" just how filthy they were. Now I cannot or will not stay in a hotel. I just don't travel anymore. One of the last vacations I had I stayed in a mountain cabin. The cabin had a faux (synthetic) animal fur duvet on the bed which seemed relatively harmless. After night fall, we went to our (my spouse and myself) bedroom and turned on the light. As soon as we did it was as if a dawning occurred! Suddenly the deep purple duvet began to change color as an orange/red color rose up from beneath the pile of the fabric and much to my horror began to swarm around the light. The fake fur was a hiding place for thousands of ladybugs and when the light in the bedroom came on they immediately flew to the light source.
That experience was the last straw for my days of travel. I have never gone back to that vacation hot spot, and I seriously hardly ever travel anymore - at all. This is just one of the horrors I have encountered during my travels, one of which involved coming to my room to find a snake lounging by the fireplace on the first night of my visit. SO....NO...! I do not want to venture outside a place I have cleaned, and I do not want to sleep in beds when I don't know who/what else might have been in the bed before I arrived (and may still be lingering).
Fortunately, I can happily report that during my travels, I have not had any hitch hikers (bed bugs) return home with me and for that I am thankful.
Edit: I have 2 indoor cats that like to sleep with me so at a minimum, I wash my bed clothes (all things on the bed) weekly...including my pillow. I've also noticed that my cats tend to stay out of my room and more specifically my bed when it is clean. Several days after freshly washing one of my cats will refuse to come into my room and neither of the 2 will get on the bed. When they start venturing back into my room and my bed, I know it's time to wash them again, even if it hasn't been a full week. 😄

I didn't always do this, but now I take a set of sheets to the hotel. I take the duvet off the bed. I cover the hotel sheets up to the pillows with the sheets I brought to the hotel. At the end of my stay, I throw those sheets away. Put the comforter onto the end of the bed and leave a generous tip. Twice, I forgot to bring sheets and just took the comforter off.

One thing I don't understand is not using a top sheet if there's a duvet. That means you're right next to the duvet instead of a sheet....I sure wouldn't want to wash a duvet every week!
It's easier to toss sheets in the washer than a duvet cover.
Seems to me how often a person washes theirs sheets is highly personal. For some people, once a week is often enough .For others, this isn't often enough. For others, every other week is fine.
Some medical conditions might call for frequent changing of sheets.

I have trust issues when it comes to hotel beds. One trip that I was on had stains on the sheets of my bed at every hotel we stayed at. We even requested to have the sheets changed at one hotel because we were staying there multiple days and the second set had stains too. Sometimes I think it has to do with them being small and the bleach not getting them. However, I had one pillow cover that looked like it was run-over by a truck.

Growing up, we washed our sheets monthly, eek, I know. Now I wash them weekly. I always wanted to be able to hang them out to dry in the sun for natural germ killing, but not able to. Duvets, I wash every other week. A lot of people forget about the pillows. I wash them fairly regularly and fluff them/ kill germs in the dryer on high for 20 min weekly. Comforters can be taken outside and beat to get rid of dust and mites, also for some sum in between washing.

Weekly sheet change. Duvet cover alternating weeks. I have two sets of sheets so I can wash sheets alternating weeks with the cover.
I live in Denver, where non introduced dust mites are rare, according to an abstract on Pub Med, so oils and sweat and the staleness of sheets is the reason to wash.
Street clothes are fine if the bed is made. We are a barefoot house so outside grime is somewhat limited, and clothing doesn’t pick up what soles do.
Street clothes in the sheets are a hard NO.

Growing up my mom wouldn't allow us to sit on the bed comforter, and still won't to this day. I change into my house lounging clothes when I get home and typically don't get onto my bed unless it's time for bed (sleep). I lounge on a sofa or chair. I tend to wash my sheets weekly but if I'm traveling, it might be closer to two weeks. I always bring a disinfectant with me when staying in a hotel and spritz the whole room, especially the bed, down.

Growing up in jr high and high school I only washed bedding if it got a noticeable spill or food(I use to eat in bed) or every 3 months. Now as an adult and with kids I wash bedding weekly. I look back and realized I didn’t know how to clean properly so I thank you tube for showing me how to. I don’t recall my bedding smelling back then but learning about dust mites and skin cells coming off made me feel yucky so I clean way more and way more often now and teach my kids so that it is habit and normal for them to want to be clean.

I wash sheets and towels once a week. Pillowcases get washed twice a week in warmer weather. Piillow protectors always washed at the same time. Mattress protectors / pads and quilts are washed every 2 weeks. I also throw back bedding to air when I first get up. I make the bed after I'm dressed and ready to go for the day. That way it's neat and attractive when I get home.
I worked for a global hotel company for over 20 years and when I traveled for business I put my suitcases, briefcases, shoes and handbags and other belongings in the bathtub when I arrived and inspected the mattress, etc. for potential bedbugs.
I don't use laundry detergent for washing pillows. Mine are all feather pillows. I use a mild dishwashing detergent because it doesn't have the brightening additives that laundry detergents do and that could leave a coating on the feathers.

It really depends on the bed at hotels. They are all different to me. I have scoliosis, and my back is so sensitive to mattresses and to pillows, too. I hate if the pillows are too thick and firm, but I also hate when pillows are too thin and floppy...I guess I like the goldilocks zone. As for the mattress, same thing. I hate if they are too firm, but I also hate if they are too soft and provide no support....I've never found my ideal bed yet, and I'm 35.

I don't have any back sensitivity and im the exact same. Im the same age as you an I by chance got lucky when i was around 16/17 and got a KingsDown brand double pillow top mattress that was so plush but not like hurt your back soft and you could flip sides to keep it soft so as to prevent it from collapsing where you sleep after having it for some time and it held up super well for as long as i had it. and from what i understand they laterally don't make mattresses like this anymore unless they are custom made and cost some serious coin. I kept it for as long as i could but felt gross about it after 10 years and have been sleeping uncomfortably ever since lol
