I grew up in Minnesota and my mom always mixed the ground beef with green beans and cream of celery all together after browning the meat then laid Tators tot on in a row. The layers you placed it on doesn’t incorporate the cream of celery into the beef and possibly makes tator tots soggy on the bottom!?

I grew up in the great state of Minnesota, but my Mom was the only mom on our block who did NOT make tater tot hotdish! She DID however make hamburger hotdish using stewed tomatoes and elbow macaroni every week during those long winters. Never got sick of them. My Mom was a pretty good cook who fed our whole family well and made sure there was enough for everyone She took great care of our whole family! ❤

@@cookingfordads well sir! I had not heard of it either, until I saw Joe of NorthernSeclusion demonstrate it on his channel. It is one of his favorites, altho I think he calls if TACO HOT DISH as he puts taco seasoning in the hamburger meat. It has macaroni in it. The thing I have that is the closest to his dish is chili/mac! Which I do like, and it has beans in it too. I don't buy tator tots any more, but I used to when my girls were growing up and then, only on occasion.

I'm interested in the roots of the word "casserole", because there have always been so many variations throughout history. The term "hot dish" definitely sounds like some Arctic pole explorers from Canada, made it home and were in such a rush to eat a hot meal! Thank you for the cooking ideas. I watch Gordon Ramsay on his UA-cam channel alot but never subscribed to it. I found your channel and i subscribed right away. 😋 THANK YOU!

in minnesota, any form of casserole is called a hotdish, not just the ones made with tater tots. tuna noodle casserole would be called a hotdish in minnesota.

Pretty drab..... I'd add some onion powder, garlic powder, dash of cayenne and some cajun seasoning to the meat mixture....and some sour cream (maybe 1/2 cup) to the soup mix. Mix the cheese in with everything and plenty on top. If you can handle a little heat ( I know...most Minnesotans can't)...add a chopped jalapeno to the onions and meat while sauteing.

I do believe it's time as Minnesotans we do not let this sort of thing fly. We need to making our own rouge for our beloved dish, we need to add the right cheeses and the right beef. I implore minnesotans to take this dish as seriously as it tastes. God sent us this hot dish and let us not disappoint.

I make this a lot and I use one can of cream of mushroom and 1 can of cream of celery.. but I don't do it in a letter like that I mix the soup and the hamburger and vegetables all together in a bowl first and then spread it out in the pan and put the tater tots on top of it. and you also need to season the meat. it really adds to it if you season the meat with taco seasoning

I like making tater tot hotdish for my kids. It's nice to see them really like something I make. It's kind of interesting to see how other people make a simple recipe like this. I do it a little different. Brown the burger and onion in a soup pot. I then spoon off the fat and add everything but the tots to the pot and mix it together. I add a little milk to thin it and make it a little saucy. Heat it up before you put it in the baking pan and put the tots on top. That way it doesn't have to bake very long.

@@cookingfordads however, if you want to avoid overly-processed foods, you could top it with home-made mashed potatoes. Skip the frozen MIXED-vegies and add something fresh instead. I know, I know, then it would cease to be "Minnesota hot-dish", but such are the vicissitudes of life. Things cease to be, such as the autonomy of the people of the Ukraine, due to selfish, evil, mankind. Feeling heartbreak for a people who just want to be left the eff alone.
