This was the first I heard of the sonata and coming back after hearing many versions, Yura's is great in that it's not overdone, balanced and just right.
This Schubert has been recorded by both cello and viola. The viola is clearer and more expressive. Often cello is richer musically, however for the arpeggione viola has a better match to the musical intent.
Playing this piece for my viola ATCL (diploma) this Autumn - it's such a technically demanding piece, and this is a beautiful rendition of it in my opinion.

It has been transcribed for a variety of modern instrument, especially the Clarinet and Cello. Frankly, I think the Viola is the perfect instrument for this sonata, as this performance shows.
My favourite performance of this fantastic work . The violist is superb and the pianist so talented. I loved it all and will now perform it again after a 50 year gap....!! Thank you both!

I used to play the viola but gave it up (I focussed on flute, then left music altogether), but I still have a love for it, and hearing such a great ambassador for this underrated instrument makes me proud. Bravo, Yura Lee!
