  • Daniel Barenboim - piano
    Pinchas Zukerman - violin
    Jacqueline du Pré - cello
    Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70 No. 1 "Ghost" / Klaviertrio D-Dur op. 70,1 „Geistertrio“
    1:18 Allegro vivace e con brio
    9:05 Largo assai ed espressivo
    21:53 Presto
    In 1808 the composer and violinist Louis Spohr was invited to a rehearsal in Beethoven's house of the D Major Piano Trio Opus 70 No. 1 known as "The Ghost" and wrote of the occasion: "It was not an enjoyable experience. First of all the piano was dreadfully out of tune, which did not trouble Beethoven in the least, since he could not hear it. Little or nothing remained of the brilliant technique which had been so much admired. In loud passages, the poor deaf man hammered away at the notes crashing through whole groups of them so that without the score one lost all sense of the melody. I was deeply moved by the tragedy of it all. Beethoven's almost continual melancholy was no longer a mystery to me."

    As I watch this (for the umpteenth time) my eyes are welling up as usual even more so that I recently saw a photograph of Barenboim and Zukerman amongst others carrying Jacqueline's coffin to her graveside. I have never seen such or felt such raw grief and I have lived for 63 years and buried both my parents, To see how they worked almost subconciously together as one here you begin to understand why

    Recorded in London's St John's Smith Square on May 12, 1970, when Barenboim was 27 years old, DuPré was 25, and Zukerman was 21.

    The glory of Beethoven who wrote this lovely piece even though he was stone deaf! The ultimate tribute to the genius of Beethoven was brilliantly performed by Barenboim, Zukerman and the genius in the way of Jacqueline du Pre who very sadly is not with us. Jacqueline du Pré had to stop playing the cello at 28, due to her MS. But how lucky we are, still beeing able to watch her playing, for example in this Op 70. I saw a documentary about her and was overwhelmed by her charm, her smile, her beauty, and her music. And her total ignorance of how she might look on the screen. No make up, no false feelings, just the natural joy in music and her facial expressions about this joy. No doubt about why Daniel Barenboim fell so in love with her.

      The first movement, although has its nice moments, is a perfect example of Beethoven not having the creativity or the time to give a better ending. He started a new slow variation then it just ends. Kinda a weird ending.

  • @michaelrosa2015
    @michaelrosa2015 4 роки тому +39

    The development section in the first movement is textbook Beethoven at it's very finest. One can quibble with some of the camera angles but this performance is unique among live performances b/c it captures 3 young artists whose mastery of their instruments and understanding of the work is itself captivating.

    • @CLASSICALFAN100
      @CLASSICALFAN100 4 роки тому

      "Quibble" is a favorite word for lots of folks. For some, it's the only "comfort zone" that they have, with every quibble as a striving for priority. One must really "Add a Dash of Pity" for people like that, as Peter Ustinov did in his book of short stories:

    As far as I know there is a manuscript page of second movement, whereon Beethoven (himself) wrote that this was a sketch or echo of his planned McBeth opera. English Wikipedia does not mention this. German Wikipedia has it:
    Zweiter Satz: Largo assai ed espressivo
    Der in d-Moll stehende Mittelsatz beginnt in Cello und Violine, dann tritt mit pulsierenden Akkorden das Klavier hinzu. Die gespenstische Atmosphäre des Satzes, die von Musikwissenschaftler Paul Bekker als »einer der wunderbarsten Offenbarungen beethovenscher Schwermut« bezeichnet wurde, entsteht u. a. durch seine Klaviertremoli und chromatische Skalen.
    Die Bezeichnung des Trios als \u201eGeistertrio\u201c geht auf Beethovens Schüler Carl Czerny zurück, der, wie er 1842 schrieb, sich durch diesen Satz an den ersten Auftritt des Geistes in William Shakespeares Tragödie Hamlet erinnert fühlte: »Der Charakter dieses, sehr langsam vorzutragenden Largo ist geisterhaft schauerlich, gleich einer Erscheinung aus der Unterwelt«.
    Laut Musikwissenschaftler Martin Gustav Nottebohm entwarf Beethoven parallel zur Komposition des Trios einen Hexenchor für eine geplante Opernkomposition mit Shakespeares Tragödie Macbeth als Vorlage.

    2 days ago I played the 2nd movement in my piano recital, because I liked the idea of the ghost in this movement, and this was the first performance I heard. Sounds pretty slow to me, but on the other hand I've played it a lot faster.

    Spohr was a brilliant composer and violinist, condemned to obscurity today because he outlived his style period and is deemed to have said some unfashionable things. His own piano trios were acclaimed as the first to render the cello fully independant of the pianist's left hand line. Spohr was the only contemporary of Beethoven who dared to write a corpus of symphonies while Beethoven was alive, and the only violinist in front of whom Paganini was afraid to play. This performance of the trio, like du Pre's rendering of the Elgar concerto, is pretty well definitive and hard to better

    Poor Louis Spohr having this dreadful experince of a totally deaf Beethoven hammering on a piano totally out of tune! "I was deeply moved by the tragedy of it" he says. So lucky then that this music has survived untuned pianos, deafness and hammering away. And so lucky we are to see these legendary musicians not hammering away this music. Music history in a nearer perspective.

    I play classical music and deeply appreciate musicians but have zero respect for such disgraceful and racist ones. Zukerman must stop making culturally insensitive and ignorant remarks to young musicians who are Asian or Asian descendants.
