Hey Tito, pretty cool mod, never thought Bluetooth to the SP would look that easy. I thought about this and even tracked down the parts but then gave up since as you mentioned, it’s best to use your expansion cover. Well done and thanks for taking the time for this video (Kudos on Kyle as well)
You’re most welcome Jesus! Couldn’t have done it with out Kyle! If you want, there should be enough room inside the LCD housing for the Bluetooth module. Cheers buddy and thank you for your support! Cheers!!
Good Tutorial very clear! I've done this without doing the expansion mod by fitting the parts in the back of the screen. I've also replaced the momentary switch with a touch switch and a transistor. Did both of these to preserve the stock look of my SP
I’d also like to try this Bluetooth mod but would like to preserve the stock look of the sp. How did you do this? What touch switch and transistor did you use? I’m guessing you connected this to the “con” pin on the Bluetooth board. How did you wire everything?
@@gregoryfakelmann612 The con pin listens to a ground signal, but the touch switch sends a power signal. The transistor is used to replace the momentary switch, with the touch sensor's power signal switching the transistor "open" or "closed", controlling the circuit from con to ground. I used a TTP223 Capacitive Touch Switch and a BC868 transistor. There should be numerous tutorials on how to use a transistor as a switch on youtube as well as wiring the touch switch.
Great video! It would be pretty cool to do a follow up video where you add a normal 3.5mm jack for those that prefer wired headphones. Great content as always!

Pretty nice mod. However, rather than gluing in a button for pairing, I think I would have used the brightness button. I am noticing some delay as well. Would like to see a follow-up yo this since I am following along as well. I managed to replace the momentary switch with a capacitive sensor and a transistor
It's really niche but if you have a virtual boy, you could do a video on fixing the ribbon cables. If you ever get into consoles, NESRGB was difficult for me. The first one resulted in garbled video, and I must have shorted something trying to fix it. The second one worked for a few months, then suddenly no video output. Must have done it in even worse trying to fix it. The third attempt is still working good. I must be $500 deep into one RBG modded NES. Anyway, amazing content! I look forward to your videos.
Oh man sorry to hear that Matt! I’ve really been wanting to do an NES rgb mod ever since I got a PVM. I may have to do a video on that. Thank you for kind words dude! Happy you are enjoying the channel! Cheers buddy!
Hey Tito!!! Is this the same GBA SP you first did the reshell and ips screen on? The video where you said you never owned a SP before. If it is that SP has gone from junk to the fanciest SP. good all around job on this mod.
Hey Tito, Fantastic content, as always. I’ve done this same mod and am experiencing a tiny bit of delay with the audio, have you experienced this as well?
@@andrewgoss1682 I have since went back and revised this mod and fixed the delay, not sure exactly what was causing it, but any delay is unnoticeable now.
Thank you Markus! Great question! One person commented that he was not able to get it to work with AirPods. I can’t independently confirm, but it may not. Hope that helps. Cheers Markus!
Seems interesting. I would like to do this mod on my spare GBC, GBP and GBA. I couldn't try this on my SP. I have some clear shells on those so that would definitely make those ones stand out.
Just a thought but rather than an internal mod of the console itself, could you modify the shell of a GBA wireless adapter? You could theoretically remove the board from the wireless adapter's shell and install a bluetooth transmitter in its place, then wire that transmitter up to a connector for the power socket, drill a hole in the shell for the connector and you'd have a bluetooth transmitter you could just clip into the console and go. You could alternatively design and 3D print a housing for a bluetooth adapter that used the same clip on system as the wireless adapter.
Hey dude. I really like the idea of the mod! But, I noticed something and I am honestly surprised it hit me this late: On the BT chip, you have RX and TX. If memory serves correctly, the pinout of the accessoire (headphone, charging) port has quite a few more pins. And, it didn't disappoint: pinoutguide.com/Game/gameboy_speakers_pinout.shtml IF you were not going to use the audio pins anymore since you have a BT mod now, you could: - Wire RX and TX to pin 2 and 4 - Use homebrew to talk to the chip. Most modders are likely to have a flashcart - at least, you do. - depending on how the BT chip works, this software could act as a setup piece, allowing the GBA to talk to the BT chip for better pairing. It was hard to read all the pin labels on the BT chip but there might be something more that could be done. Personally, if I had an SP, I'd settle for a BT dongle. This thing is small enough that it and an accessoire port plug together would make just a tiny tongle you could attach to the back for when you actually want to use it. Downside: The Wireless adapter wouldn't fit anymore, but how often do you use that these days anyway ^^. I haven't yet learned how to draw a UI on the GBA and my DevPro install is dead AND I lack the solder skills. But I am pretty positive there is something you could do there. If I remember correctly, Intendo initially wanted to use this secondary port for other accessoires too. Something that also just came to my mind: Does the BT chip have a way to tell, per impulse or something?, that it has a connection? If so, you could indeed do what the guide suggests above and instead of wiring to the test pads, wire to the audio pins instead and actually use the volume slider! One way or another, there are some neat things that could be done =)
Wow thank you for this very detailed comment Ingwie! That is super interesting, I agree there is probably much more that can be done with the Bluetooth chip. I will have to defer to my friend Kyle as he is more technically inclined when it comes to the details of these mods. It would be really cool if we could make the link port wireless. The sky is definitely the limit when it comes to these types of mods! Again, thank you for the detailed and thoughtful comment! Cheers buddy!
Dude! I love the idea, so the chip itself has serial (uart) for AT config commands. From what I've seen on GitHub it looks like there is implementation for device list management, my only problem I can think of really boils down to how the gba sp handles serial data. Looking through GBDK it appears to wrap all serial comms into a sort of session manager, without direct serial access. But I suspect it would be relatively easy to expose this functionality in GBDK, only real hurtle left is you would have to have a chip sit in between the gba sp and the radio chip due to baud rate constraints . Which is why I opted for push button pairing instead. But yes this would be cool!
@@MachoNachoProductions I'm currently working on this. I have a clear shell and don't want the led flashing all the time. I'm not always using headphones. I'm thinking about adding a second switch to turn the BT module on and off or just removing the led altogether. Would love to see how you would tackle this.
You can also have the led facing inward toward the lcd, that way it won’t shine through the shell (or be much less visible). I wouldn’t desoldered the led, it’s good to have so you know when it’s on and in pairing mode. A switch to cut off power could also be good!
@@MachoNachoProductions i mean the copper wires you used, arent they blank or are they isolated..im not so into electronic and electric but i allways hear "use only isolted wires" :D so i dont know... Thank you for your answer!
Ah gotcha! Great question! Yes, they are enamel coated so there is no worry of shorting anything out. They are completely isolated. That is what the sand paper is for, to remove the enamel coating and expose the copper wire below to allow for soldering. Cheers!
That’s a great question Kevin. A user indicated in the comments that they are actually unable to pair AirPods. I’m curious if Apple is using a different protocol than other Bluetooth devices. So if you’re planning to use this mod with AirPods I would perhaps reconsider unless you have another pair of headphones or speakers you could use. Hopefully this answers your question. Cheers dude!
Awesome mod. Do you find any issue with random noise from the SP mobo? I did a similar mod even with a dehum/dehiss kit and I wasn’t a huge fan of the random noise the SP puts out. It could also just be my specific mobo.
Awesome! Been wanting to add bluetooth to my N3DS but have been put off because the one example I found, they said the latency was too much and only good for recording purposes. Is the latency acceptable with this different module? If so, I'll definitely be giving it a shot.
There is some latency. According to Kyle it appears to be about 15ms. When I compared the the sound coming from the SP to what I heard in my headphones I could tell there was a small delay. Not sure if that helps. Perhaps I should record a video to show the difference.
@@MachoNachoProductions 15ms is pretty good compared to the 100-300ms I get on my phone, for the $4 the module costs I think I'll just order a pair and give it a shot with my dslite first, and if I'm happy with it, in my hyrule edition n3ds. To avoid modifying the shell, I think I'm going to use a hall effect sensor and a magnet instead of a microswitch for pairing. Thanks for the video, even though it's for the SP it'll be very helpful in modding my DSs, and thanks for showing me the new module!
@@MachoNachoProductions Well, I've got some bad news- I received two modules, and long story short- It worked, but there is a ton of noise and buzzing in the background of the audio. I'm not sure where its coming from, but I tried both modules and they both have identical buzzing. This was in my New 3DS XL, taking audio from the pads from the headphone jack. This was also powering the module off the 3.7v battery, which maybe caused it? I'm going to try my switch next when I've got time. Anyways, the latency seemed really low and pairing was really easy, so if there's less noise in the Switch it'll definitely be staying there.
Hmm that’s interesting that your getting a noisy audio signal. Definitely would be interested to hear how it works for the switch! Best of luck buddy! Cheers!
Hey Tito, I've been looking into this type of mod as a general way to modify any 3.5mm jack to become a bluetooth capable device, but one thing I've been concerned about is audio latency. A lot of bluetooth audio transmitters (and receivers, for that matter) tend to not care as much about latency, and for games this can be a problem. How's the latency with this board?
I would love to! The only issues is I’m having a hard time trying to track one down. The only ones for sale are the old rechargeable ones. Was hoping to get the one with that fits the 6 AA batteries. That would be easier to mod. I’ll keep on looking. Cheers!
Too bad there aren't any bluetooth mods that I can find for the 2DS. Maybe you can do one (preferably with an expansion kit so the mod can be reversible).
You should make and ebay some SPs with improved speaker, screen, wireless charge and bluetooth. How much would they be 😁 Some of us are way too inept to do all this lmao
Amazing work just like all of your mods! I was thinking about doing this on a gameboy macro and putting the module where the ds cartridge slot was. Do you know the dimensions of the Bluetooth module?

I am noticing some delay as well. Would like to see a follow-up yo this since I am following along as well. I managed to replace the momentary switch with a capacitive sensor and a transistor
sman these videos are amazing wow
Thank you Yesh! Happy you are enjoying them!! Cheers!
Awesome video as always. Quick question, is there any sort of delay in the audio with this mod?
There is a slight amount of latency that I was able to notice. According to Kyle it is a kit 15ms. Hope that helps! Cheers Nommin!
You could attach the pairing button to TP2 instead of a momentary switch then simply hold down select to pair.
🎶🔥
rlly awesome mod, this is actually the first mod ive ever done on a console and i gotta say its super usefull >w
I want this whole setup! I wonder if a modding site would do this for me lol.
I’m sure you can find a modder who will do this mod for you. There are some folks in Instagram who specialize in these sorts of mods. Cheers BeatFish!
Did you find someone? 🙏
Hey Tito!!! Is this the same GBA SP you first did the reshell and ips screen on? The video where you said you never owned a SP before. If it is that SP has gone from junk to the fanciest SP. good all around job on this mod.
Without you I wouldn't even know these things existed
I’m glad I’m able to provide a platform for folks to find out about these mods! I’m thrilled to be helping out in some way! Cheers Matt!
Hey Tito, Fantastic content, as always. I’ve done this same mod and am experiencing a tiny bit of delay with the audio, have you experienced this as well?
It's normal unfortunately. Just a quirk with bluetooth.
@@andrewgoss1682 I have since went back and revised this mod and fixed the delay, not sure exactly what was causing it, but any delay is unnoticeable now.
Awsome tutorial! Does it also work with air pods?
Thank you Markus! Great question! One person commented that he was not able to get it to work with AirPods. I can’t independently confirm, but it may not. Hope that helps. Cheers Markus!
@@MachoNachoProductions Thanks👍
You’re welcome Markus!
my face when a gbsp has bluetooth audio but the switch doesnt
Haha, I know! What a major oversight on Nintendo’s part. Would have been such a great feature to have.
Nice video! What multi meter do you use?
Hey! I use a Fluke 27! It’s great. You can get em used pretty cheap but they’re kinda expensive for their age. Cheers bud!
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks!
You bet!
Seems interesting. I would like to do this mod on my spare GBC, GBP and GBA. I couldn't try this on my SP. I have some clear shells on those so that would definitely make those ones stand out.
I think this could very well be done on those consoles! Stay tuned to the channel! Cheers!
Is it possible to do this with a Game boy advance and also is there any latency? Fantastic video I was so excited when I saw this
I looked into this, and yes! S01 and S02 pads are available on the GBA main board, so same wiring should apply!
Great question! What Kyle said, haha!
@@KyleBrinkerhoff awesome! (:
U are amazing 👏
Thank you! So are you!! Cheers Archy88!
And, it didn't disappoint: pinoutguide.com/Game/gameboy_speakers_pinout.shtml
IF you were not going to use the audio pins anymore since you have a BT mod now, you could:
- Wire RX and TX to pin 2 and 4
- Use homebrew to talk to the chip.
Nice mod, how about printing a replacement shell bottom that's the size you want so that you get a custom one piece bottom again ?
Stay tuned. I think you may like a future episode I’ll be releasing soon. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions ahah can't wait :)
AirPods with my game boy sp will get me weird looks but it’ll be worth it
Really wanted to see the sound quality on the Anker Speaker.
Now you need to do this on a original gba that would be amazing to see
It should be a very similar mod. If there is enough interest I may do a follow up video for the original GBA. Thank you for the comment! Cheers!
I wonder if it's possible to make to it recognize a controller, soldering on the right places...
Useless, but curious...
yes, you can do this, take a look at the CONSOLIZER! it might be right up your ally!
Im looking for the same... well, im looking for use a controller on GBA... haved luck about it?
Awsome! ...arent there any problems with blank wires?
I’d love to answer your question, however I’m not sure what you mean by “blank wires”? Can you elaborate?
@@MachoNachoProductions i mean the copper wires you used, arent they blank or are they isolated..im not so into electronic and electric but i allways hear "use only isolted wires" :D so i dont know...
Thank you for your answer!
Ah gotcha! Great question! Yes, they are enamel coated so there is no worry of shorting anything out. They are completely isolated. That is what the sand paper is for, to remove the enamel coating and expose the copper wire below to allow for soldering. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Ahhhh! Okay, thank you very much!
You’re welcome!
Very nice bluetooth tutorial. If you use Apple airpods can you also do the Volume up/down? because the airpods only use the volume of the device.
Sounds awesome dude! I’d definitely want to stay up to date with your progress for the switch. Sounds like an awesome mod! Cheers buddy!
Great question! There is a small amount of latency. About 15ms. Hope that helps! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions That's way lower than I expected. 40ms is about what's considered 'playable'.
I'll have to give this board a shot.
Congratulations on 10k subs! That's some "advanced" modding lol
Thanks man! Much appreciated! Haha, Advanced for sure! Cheers buddy!!
Insane!
Please tito make a video making a mod with the sega nomad rechargeable battery.
I definitely plan on lookin into ways to make a battery! It may be a while but it’s on the list!! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks for answer me tito. I hope you use the original rechargeable battery pack for more retro looking 😃
I would love to! The only issues is I’m having a hard time trying to track one down. The only ones for sale are the old rechargeable ones. Was hoping to get the one with that fits the 6 AA batteries. That would be easier to mod. I’ll keep on looking. Cheers!
I want to do this mod, I would love to do this mod, but I can't I am physically unable to hold those tiny ass wires. DAMN YOU CARPAL TUNNEL!!!
Just an idea to make it just alittle cleaner. Why not use a touch sensor for the pairing like some gba ips screens use for dimming options
Too bad there aren't any bluetooth mods that I can find for the 2DS. Maybe you can do one (preferably with an expansion kit so the mod can be reversible).
maybe, principles are the same, and im sure theirs a way to tap into a non line leveled segment of the audio circuit
YOU DID WHAT!?!?!
GBA consolizer sp when? 🤯
I know there’s definitely one for the AGB. Not sure if the AGS is in the works. That would be awesome though! Would be a smaller footprint.
You should make and ebay some SPs with improved speaker, screen, wireless charge and bluetooth. How much would they be 😁 Some of us are way too inept to do all this lmao
Such a great video though
Try Kynar wire and use different colors, no sanding or labeling required
Thank you, I just ordered some kynar about a month ago. Hopefully it gets here soon. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Perfect also make sure you have a pair of decent wire strippers
Amazing work just like all of your mods! I was thinking about doing this on a gameboy macro and putting the module where the ds cartridge slot was. Do you know the dimensions of the Bluetooth module?
Sounds like an awesome project!
15mm x 23.7mm x 2.7mm are the measurements.
Cheers Brian!

I really want to do this, tho i dont really like to mess around with soldering on my ags 101s. is there anything, or could i make anything that i could plug into the back of the handheld for bluetooth audio?
That’s a great question Strasky! Unfortunately I don’t know of any method that would not require soldering. Sorry buddy. It may be something I look into in the future. Cheers buddy and thank you for the comment and watching the channel!
Hi Awesome! I may add this to m GBC and GG instead.
Any delay to the audio?
