It's so weird how lenient Nintendo was with stuff like this back in the day compared to now. I remember seeing all kinds of knocks offs of Nintendo consoles and handhelds. To see that this was even licensed is wild.

Back when I lived in Japan, the DS was a big deal. That keyring hole? I actually had students who would attach one to their belt or backpack. It was almost a status symbol. Something like this would have allowed that status symbol for (1) students without much money, and (2) students who wanted to display their DS without risking damage. The fact that it's a voice recorder is secondary to the fact that it's a DS. The voice recorder is probably only their so that Banpresto could make it a licensed product.
Elliot: "Unless you're Japanese and can read what it says on the packaging"
The DS on the packaging: *"NINTENDO DS VOICE RECORDER"*
What I've learned in this video:
1. This isn't a DS
2. This is a DS

Yeah it was
So, I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't so much a retail product as it was an arcade prize of some sort. There are a number of Banpresto products that rather than being sold are instead used as arcade prizes and such in UFO Catchers or for Ichiban Kuji (in-store seasonal lotteries, each of them being themed to a certain property). A lot of these products have incredibly small production runs, and finding any given product outside of Japan prior to the past few years has been a bit of a challenge without a middleman service. This is definitely an awesome find, was definitely unaware of this particular one which raises the possibility that there's a whole little line of stuff similar to this that has gone unseen.
"What is this rubbish?"
Not a DS, didn't you hear?
If my hypothesis is correct, the final conclusion is that this isn’t a DS.

"Everything looks normal, right?" *Rattles when placed on table*
These were never meant to be sold but could be won in UFO crane type games in Japan. That’s why the box has a little handle on top. I have several mini Famicoms that were in a similar box that turned out to be clocks.
Is Elliot giving hearts to those who arrive early?
Yes! Always!
@@TheRetroFuture how about me?
Aww guess i cant :(
Imagine, sleeping at night and the voice recorder plays for no reason with a very strange voice
They missed the chance to use the actual battery door for the batteries!
i'm amazed they went through the effort to put the mic where its supposed to be
Same!
when you can read katakana and are able to tell what the thing is early
Can you fit an actual DS board in there and turn it into a fully working DS? Just cut down the board a little bit and use different buttons and triggers?
No seeing as how there are no L and R buttons, touchscreen and the thing itself has nowhere big enough for the battery
I thought he could do a GBA out of it, since the screen and everything else is a bit smaller than the actual DS
Interesting idea for a video
He can pull it off! :)

its supposed to be a disguised voice recorder. you would usually think its just a DS so you can secretly record people

This isn’t a Nintendo DS
The mold might have been a universal mold for other planned products, which would explain the amount of detail put into the buttons (Especially the Shoulder buttons) but only some work.
Well then, WHAT IS IT? 😅

this thing is actually illegal in some countries, because it literally looks like a spy device
Imagine in the early 2000s; waking up on Christmas day, and finding this under the tree instead of an actual DS. The agony...
The speaker is not only the same as the DMG speaker but also Brick Game speakers! Also in Tiny Arcades, loads of different toys, etc. Just a standard 1-inch open back speaker.
If it’s licensed by banpresto, I believe the origin of this device was probably a prize from a Game Center from Japan. Usually when Nintendo releases a new game or console, they use banpresto to create prizes for the UFO catcher machines. Sort of a sneaky way fun way to advertise their products😆
Theory: Some prankster in China is on a campaign of making weirder and weirder Nintendo-themed products, just to see if this silly dude in Jersey keeps buying them.
0:06 - Man, these Marks & Spencer's food adverts have gotten really weird lately.
every time he says “there’s no other video of this on youtube” you know it’s gonna be good
Imagine he asks his friend to dig out the "ol' Nintendo DS" one day, and mass confusion ensues.
We all know why Elliott really bought this. Because he needed a new mic
I wonder if one could trim a DS lite to fit inside that and make it a real DS.
Or a DSi
@@alessandra0506 I just took a glance over at my DSi and DS Lite, and the DS Lite is juuuuuuust a bit smaller, so it might work better.
Edit: it's smaller in top-down width, which I feel is the most important axis for such a project. the DSi may indeed be more compact, but its PCB may be wider.
Someone might have already said this but stuff like this was often made for putting in arcade prize machines like claw grabbers, penny pushers etc to make people think they were playing for a more expensive prize. Replica versions of handheld consoles, ipods and expensive phones that do very basic functions like voice recording or alarm clocks etc were very common in the early 2000s. Either way this is a really cool find!
In case you wondering, this is suppose to be a crane machine prize. Branpresto usually produce this type of novelty item.
So that bird came out of an egg and not my ds? What a relief.
I wonder if it would be able to fit an actual gameboy mobo inside. Clearly it would need quite a lot of work but...
I found so much weird stuff when I collected anime back in the 80s. This doesn't surprise me at all. Interesting video, Sir!
Thank you!!
Time to transform that into a fully functioning DS! Come on boy, get on with it!
If you get the packaging for the first "not a DS", you'd have yourself an Xbox.
I thought it was a alarm clock.
i thought it would be a calculator lol
I love your sense of humor, I came for the gameboy knowledge and stayed for your wittiness, greetings from Mexico
"This is NOT a Nintendo DS" It is a picture on a display device.
I wonder if you can fit the innards of a ds lite inside it. That'd be a pretty awesome mod.
"Some company called Banpresto"
I cant even tell if that was serious.
Banpresto was a toy and game division for Bandai Namco. They made lots of high quality anime figures near the end of the company life.
While it didn't have official recording, the original DS did have a microphone.
I have a similar toy. It's for a Kamen Rider W gadget. It records like 4 seconds of sound and you can use it for the Transformation Belt and little frog looking gadget.
Banpresto is a anime publisher (at least I think it is). Nintendo licenses a bunch of toy versions of their systems. The gba and GameCube had cases which came with 3D gummies, Nintendo also made game holders with candy inside as well. One thing I had as a kid was this candy inside a wiimote shell. If you can send this to Stuart for a review if he is interested that would be awesome Elliot.
Banpresto is a former game developer and publisher, actually a toy company division of bandai.
Banpresto is a Bandai’s subsidiary company. Mostly making arcade crane game toys. But Bandai has created different subsidiary company Bandai Spirit, And that made Banpresto’s company scale much smaller than back in 2000’s.
Plot Twist: It is a DS
4:13 that was quite funny
loved ur intro as well
great video mate
"Mom, I want a TalkBoy"
"We have a TalkBoy at home"
Imagine if people used these as shells for dedicated handheld emulators the dual screens are ideal for ds, 3ds and wii u emulation
You and your tendency to find collectibles are why I come to this channel. Keep up the good work.
News to me.
I have a Nintendo 64 key chain voice recorder however that mom got me when I was still a young kid.
It stopped working years ago but its still nice to have.
banpresto make a lot of items that are used for prizes in crane games in the arcades that voice recorder in the video is a crane game prize which is why it has that hang tab style flap on the top of the box its so you can use the claws to snag it. A lot of prizes have that same box type with a huge hang tab or holes in each side for the same reason. This kind of stuff is not normally sold in stores it's kind of exclusive to the arcades but it eventually makes its way on amazon japans marketplace and other reseller channels.
Banpresto now makes Pokémon and Kirby toys, so they do have a Nintendo license
6:50 "Oh" *there isn't enough room for DSi internals :(*
3:05 I think its a Modell for Shops for Deko I have seen something like this once.
I'm gonna be honest, at first I thought this was the single most brazen knock-off I had ever seen.
Then you mentioned Banpresto... An official toy and game dev responsible for a fair few titles!
I saw a DS shaped metal mint package once. I think it was from the same company who does the NES controller mints.
Honestly in any tech or anything I’d much rather have hot glue to hold in some small electronics than it just being tightly fitted in their. But also luckily most hot glue is easy to pry off
Banpresto is actually a very well-known company in Japan. They produced a lot of licensed games and toys. They are now a subsidiary of Bandai Namco.
Guys, i don't wanna scare you, but that maybe isn't a ds
3:38 Dont talk to me or my son ever again
Could someone cut a motherboard down a bit, get smaller touch screens and fit real DS tech into that? Make a (dare I say) DS Mini?
I was so sure this would be an alarm clock or something. Tbh I feel like that would've been a bit more useful, lol
Elliot that looks like a perfect donar case...fit somthing inside so it can be used as a mini DS
Horror movies be like *person walks up to a fake ds* Elliot's voice recording: *hello* the person: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Elliot: Hello everybody Elliot here.
DS: Hello.
You just unearthed a memory of my original pokedex having two battery slots. I think one was for the actual power and one was a battery backup?
5:20 soon we'll just have the dsvc do a whole video for us
Some kid in Japan got this for his birthday and it did not end well...
Guarantee you there's at least one kid out there whos grandma bought them this for christmas instead of a real one
I see the potential for a mod here: hook up a real button board to the D-Pad (or other buttons) and use it to operate a flashlight.
It looks like a DS Toy rather than DS Electronic Game (Hand-Held/Non-Not Hand-Held) Consoles.
Who on Planet Earth had an Nintendo DS and was thinking "Hey, one thing is really missing here - a voice recorder would be cool". Maybe it was somebody that wanted to fool the boss and have the chance to play games even at work..... If your brain is like that you already have a serious problem, mate.
Me: Looks at thumbnail.
Also Me: Uh, pretty sure it is.
gotta love those skits at the beginning of ur vids! keep it up
The hinge on that thing is so disgustingly cheap-looking that I can already feel it breaking
Imagine getting this for Christmas back in the day!
Dad: Here you go son, Merry Christmas!
Son: Thanks dad, I love you!!!!
Opens package...
Son: WT....F...... IS THIS!?!?!?!
Hysterical laughter heard from the next room.
Banpresto is primarily a Japanese toy company. They're known mostly for Gundam games/toys. In the mid 2000s they merged with Bandai Namco and the game division became B.B. Studio. I'm a big fan of their Super Robot Wars series!!
And now the challenge! Build a DS "Lite" inside that "thing" 🤩
I now know that banpresto makes a lot of figures for anime and video game characters as well as NOT a DS
What if we are in the matrix and we are being forced to think that isn't a DS, when it actually is one? Conspiracy intensifies!
Imagine if the DS Lite ended up being the original model shrunk down to the size of this thing.
I laughed harder than I should have at the intro. I enjoy weird stuff like this but that intro was just hilarious.
Imagine receiving this as a gift instead of a real DS, I'm sure that probably happened
