  • Myanmar School Attacks Surge Amid Civil War 14.08.2024
Fighting in Myanmar’s civil war has intensified, leading to a sharp rise in attacks on schools and deepening the country’s education crisis, according to Myanmar Witness, a group monitoring the conflict.
Their report reveals that 174 attacks on schools and universities have occurred since the military overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s government three years ago. Millions of children are now displaced, missing vaccinations, and suffering from malnutrition. The Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack recorded over 245 assaults on schools in 2022-23.
Myanmar’s 2021 military coup has driven the country into armed conflict, with the military relying on airstrikes as they lose control of territory. Student enrollment has dropped 80% since 2020, with Save the Children estimating 7.8 million children were not in school by mid-2022.
Myanmar Witness blames the military for the majority of attacks, though resistance forces have also carried out smaller strikes. The conflict has disrupted education as teachers quit to join the civil disobedience movement, and shifting battle lines make it harder to hold lessons.
The humanitarian crisis continues to worsen, with over 3 million displaced and 35% of children living in food poverty. More than half of Myanmar’s children now live in poverty, as the country’s middle class has all but disappeared.
