- This video highlights the top 10 tank mates for the Apistogramma cichlid. This list is based on own experience keeping the Apisto, along with research and discussions with other hobbyists.
The Apistogramma is one of our favorite cichlids. It can be tricky finding ideal tank mates for them, since some can be too large or aggressive, but hopefully this list will point you in the right direction

This is the video I've been looking for. I'm soon going to start a 75 gal tank, and I wanted to base it on dwarf cichlids. I want a busy community tank, but also the personality of cichlids. This is the only one of many videos that give clear options. Thanks for a great starting point.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome list. I was wondering if they could kept with neon tetras. Thanks for answering that question.
Cheers! Bro As always with a good video of Cichlids 🐟 🐡 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks for watching!
Personally, I keep my apistogramma in a large community aquarium, they are very beautiful and interesting fish
Thanks cichlids bro's thanks for the great help ideas I'm thinking to set up a 55 gallons tank with those gorgeous beautiful fish 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤❤
Great video Bro! 👍
Thank you!
@@CichlidBros keep up the work bro!
That's CichlidBro to you 😉
I keep Apistogramma macmasteri with Ember tetra, Corydotas panda and Hatchet fish and they do so good
Very nice!
Hey, I've kind of fallen in love with the Apistogramma viejita gold and would like to breed them. But I also love orange Oryzias latipes. Would they be okay as tankmates?
Great vid as always, as someone that has always kept bigger tanks and bigger fish like Oscar’s and Jack Dempsey s , I’m really wanting to get a medium to large tank with many smaller fish than one or two big ones and I’m just starting to do my due diligence and research the smaller fish and the apistos , I don’t know a ton about them and never kept them before but I’m thinking about a planted 75 with a pair or two would that work?
You and I are thinking the same thing lol
Been thinking South American for sure and I’m deciding between 4-6 apistos and 4-6 Bolivian rams no idea which way I’ll lean
Love your videos lots of info and great tank creations. I have a question? I have a 75 gallon bichirs tank love it. I just got a 30 gallon breeder and both dwarf chiclids love it! I am waiting on a 55 gallon tank and want a non common fish want something exotic something you don't see all the usual pet store. Want so.e suggestions. I want to make it look like a wow I haven't seen these fish before. I was thinking lung fish or wolf fish but not sure tank mates just an idea. No oscars to common and too big.
🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for this video. I just bought an 80 gallon and let my twins pick their favorite shoaling fish - cardinals and black phantom tetras- but I get to plan the rest. Can you tell me the scientific name of the apistogrammas that are mostly blue and green? Any opinion on how apistos do with neo cherry shrimp? Thanks
Nice set up , great information , cute host. Good job 😂
Haha thank you!
@@CichlidBros your very welcome lol 😊
I’ve been planning a planted community tank in my 40gal breeder and have been on forums for some advice and this is what I’ve been recommended: 1 female apisto, 3 honey gourami, 1 female pearl, opaline or powder blue gourami (whichever I can find but I’ve been told pearl gouramis are more peaceful), 10 neon tetras, 5-6 emperor tetras and 6 panda corydoras. Is this over stocked or are they not compatible?
Also these are my tank info and parameters;
Ph- 7.0-7.6 (more like 7.2)
Ammonia- 0-0.25ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 5-10ppm
I also have rock hides for an apisto if they are compatible and over 10 species of live plants, drift wood, stratum substrate, black sand and rocks (not hides).
I don’t plan on buying fish for another month or so to get my plants to grow into the tank since they’re new and haven’t anchored or rooted around the rocks and wood or into the substrate. Any and all criticism, help and advice is welcome ❤
Setting up a 20 gallon high in my home office as I watch this. Current stocking idea is a pair of Agassizii, 7 neons and a trio of fancy guppies. Fortunately the only fish I have to buy for this tank are the neons.
Very inspiring video bros❤❤❤⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🤟🤟💥💥👊👊💪💪🔥🔥🏆👑
Thanks for watching! 👊🏻👊🏻
I wish my local fish stores had them , same with Geophagis
I have 2 females and 1 male in a sand tank with live plants and bog wood they see happy should i add ottos ? Or corries ? Tia.
Would a pair work with a severum, 2 eba, and 2 sveni in a 75?
Kribensis would they eat cardinal tetras or Chilli rasboras or galaxy rasboras ?
I got apistogramma cacatuoides yesterday with mom on Saturday
Very nice 👍🏻
i have 3 plecos about 3 inches each in a 20g high (60x40x40cm)
im about to pick up a pair of Apisto Cacatuoides T Red.
Was not sure if the plecos would be ok. but glad i saw this video and feel better
How do your pair of apisto doing in that tank? I want to buy a tank like yours and wondering if apisto would be happy with those measurements
@@kimyungill2149 so far so good... all 5 of them doing well with medium heavy planted tank with lots of rocks wood and of course plants
How about a 65g tank with 6 corries and 6 rummies ? Im thinking of 1 make wuth 3 females . Thoughts please , tia. 🙏 ❤
With big tetras, treat em like Tiger barbs. They are no where near as aggressive obviously but they do like being in large groups I would say 15+
I enjoyed the video and learned exactly what I wanted to know… however being in the market for a pair of Apistogrammas is not easy… gonna have to be mail order, please recommend a site that has a good selection, if you can…my 29 gallon is planted with rocks and sand and my marble veiled angelfish along with the speckled Cory’s and they are screaming for tank mates… thanks yall…
They look like little sharks playing in the sand. So cute!
The only issue with the list is the Denison barbs and rainbowfish only because they are so active and at feeding time, they might not allow enough food for the apisto imo great list overall 🙂👍🏻
I have my apistos in a 75 with some electric blue acara and rainbow fish. They seem to do really well together.
Very nice
if housing dwarf flag cichlid with a pair of apistos how many and what sex of flag cichlids would you add in a 55gal?
How do you feel about rummy nose tetras schooling with the Apistogramma
Would probably work well
Beautiful fish! Would acara do well with them in a 55 gal?
Sir can I keep a pair of apistos, neon tetras and a wild betta in a densely decorated Black water 20 gallon ecosystem?
I am thinking about getting me a 15g tank I don't have Room in my apartment for a 20g I got a Batt and in a 5g I just wanted to keep my Batt and like to put Apistogamma with my Batt in tougher can you help me with this
Would they be happy in a 30gal corner tank? Are these one of the community cichlids that you can have a planted tank with?
Yep!
@@CichlidBros sweet!!! I have one I've been trying to figure out what to do with.
Perfect timing…… i just set up a fluval flex. 32 gallon. With some apistos….. wanted to see. What other fish 🐠 i could put in ✅👋
Awesome. Glad it’s helpful!
How did they live in that tank? I want a nano tank and thinking of apistoa
What about Bolivian rams and apistos? I’ve heard Bolivians don’t have to have as high of temps as German blue rams
I’ve heard of issues with Corydora and Apisto. I have some albino Cory’s I’m moving to a heavily planted 36 gallon. I really want apistos but they fear they will clash.
Shouldn’t be an issue
@@CichlidBros even if I had a breeding pair of apisto?
@@SpencerJ289can be a problem. Otos are better
Could there be problems with apistos and bolivian rams?
Usually they’re fine together
Do apistos need schooling fish above them ? Tia
They don’t need it, but it does seem to make them more comfortable/come out of hiding
Is it possible to put a dwarf gourami? Or a honey gourami?
Should be fine
I have a 75 gal with neon tetras, harlequins, chili rasboras, green rasboras, Cory's, pygmy Cory's, a pea puffer and a betta. You guys think an apisto will be ok?
Probably not because the apistos can be quite aggressive and it will be overstocked.
How many of the smaller fish? Also with a pea puffer no. Also maybe get the pea puffer or betta out of there. That usually doesn't work long term. Either remove the pea puffer or the Betta. If you want an apistogramma remove both. The odds that the pea puffer nips an appistos fins are high in my experience.
If it were my tank I'd remove the betta asap because that setup isnt ideal for it with all the busy fish and the pea puffer.
Also chili rasboras are very tiny so maybe don't keep those with a larger apisto as well.
@Za Fish Guy ok cool I was mainly worried bout my small fish getting eaten. The pea puffer and betta get along great been together for a long time
What type do you have?
How about rummy nose tetras?
Yep would likely work well
Can you keep Apistogramma with Blue Ram
Depends on how big the tank is because they all need their own space and territory
I have 2 blue rams and a cockatoo apisto in a 29g... they get along but only because they have different sections, heavy planted, they're territorial but they're not aggresive.
Can i put like 30 dwarf cichlid species together?
Yep, in a decent sized tank it would work
@@CichlidBros awesome !!
Hi
👋🏼
Maybe you should include the latin names too?
Why? We can identify them by the common name. Plus, it’s more memorable. If you want the Latin name, Google is your friend
@@IrishJam93 Common names are different from country to country, sometimes from the east coast to the west, from shop to shop.
The latin names are the same all over the world.
@@kasperkjrsgaard1447 fair enough, that makes sense
Be great if you answered questions here. 😢
From my opinion, aquarium mates should be from from same native area. 😃
Y does he say harlequin so wrong 😂
Actually the correct pronunciation 🤷🏻♂️
I don’t think it is correct to just say apistogramma’s can be generalized like you are saying. Maybe I don’t know what I am talking about but some Apistos can be hell on wheels, but most are generally peaceful. Maybe if you made it more clear which Apistos you where talking about it would not seem so troubling. I am not trying to be negative, I am just unclear on your parameters within the subject.
If it wasn’t generalized, the video would be an hour long. There also aren’t that many nuances between types. The list applies to all apistos
@@CichlidBros what about Hongsloi or Cockatoo. They are a bit more aggressive and have actually lost fish to both before. Also, don’t put your Rams with them, they lose every time. That is just my experience. I would not want anyone newer to these fish to come across these same bad experiences that I have had.
@@slaggs4633yeah I would say the list would still apply to those. With all cichlids, there’s always a chance to have an aggressive one, but generally speaking all apistos will be relatively peaceful. Some tips to reduce aggression can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/YNOasFFzogw/v-deo.html
@@CichlidBros Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate you guys and the accessibility for dialogue. I am by no means a veteran fish keeper, but I love the culture of this hobby to always be learning. There is never just one way for anything, I love that.
