Ehhh it feels out-of-place and unnecessary, like the alien seedbed level of Duke Nukem Forever. 40k is violent and horrible as a rule in its setting, but the daemonculaba feels like the kind of arguably mysoginistic "horror" that shows up for edgy shock value, trying to show off how icky and bad it is by how it specifically involves women. Like there are dozens of different ways I'm certain the concept and purpose of a daemonculaba could be executed that both better fit the setting AND is more horrifying.

I think Dragon Age's broodmothers pulling this years before I even found WH40k made me just neutral to the existence of daemonculaba. DA is nowhere as dark as WH40k, so it serves as a much harsher contrast - based on the grimdark 40th millenium I expected something much darker, there are so much body horror in WH40k already

Like a bunch of stuff in WH40k, the daemonculaba is taken from the Dune books by Frank Herbert. TBH before hearing about the Daemonculaba/Dead Sky, Black Sun story I thought the Iron Warriors weren't that bad when compared to the likes of the Nightlords and the Emperor's Children. The theme of factory farming; the uncaring cruelty rewarded by efficient mass production really does suit the Iron Warriors brutal and emotionless nature and this gives them a quite effective extra layer of horror different from any of the other Chaos legions.

    • @Aphelion67
      @Aphelion67 11 місяців тому +1

Honsou was different from other Iron Warriors warlords because he was a "half-breed", with geneseed taken from the Iron Fists and not just Soulaka. You see this much more pronounced in the book he's introduced in, Storm of Iron about the Siege of Hydra Cordatus. He was broadly hated by his peers and even the men he commanded for that fact, which made him more willing to engage in supremely dark deeds to prove himself, one, and to also gain an edge on his rivals. Hence the Daemonculaba.

Other books that gives insight into the POV of survivors of Chaos occupation are the Dan Abnett Books 'Traitor General' and 'His last command'. They feature a hole ecosystem of campy concepts of corruptions, but the best feature of all these books (including Dead Sky, Black Sun) is that they explore the fringes of unreasonable faith in face of unfathomable horrors and frankly a critical deconstuction of the 'good angelic human' like 'Bladerunner' did.

A bio-engineered artificial womb made from a woman wouldn't even be a main goal. That's like a side project when the Homunculus wants to take a break from making giant flesh spiders with laser eyes, or pipe organs made of people who scream out clouds of drugs.
And what? Only a single subject per tank? How wasteful! A true artisan would create a room sized vessel out of many subjects that can crank out entire companies at a time.

I really enjoyed this format! Especially the personal touch stood out from all of your other videos I've watched.
I think the whole concept of the Daemonculaba just highlights how hard it is for chaos space marines to get new members to their ranks. It's quite a desperate situation when you look at it objectively. It's the outcome of an experiment that does the job, but still is highly inefficient. They didn't have a better solution, so that's why they took that approach and industrialized it.
It's kinda weird that this rarely gets mentioned, even though it is pretty much in your face as there are a lot of casualties in the grim dark future.

Kinda reminds me of the people-farms from the Beast-Rising-series. In short, Iron Warriors and Black Templars agree to a temporary truce in the face of overwhelming odds, which in an on itself is already crazy. They infiltrate a world held and actually civilized by the Beast Orks, used as a orky version of an agri world. And basically they farm humans. Take the worst versions of industrial farming and replace the chickens with human beings which have been so degraded and abused by this point that they literally are cattle. Their only response to the Marines infiltrating their farm is to open their mouths because by now they associate light with food. They don't beg for help or mercy, don't try to escape, they're literally reduced to the level of simple farm animals for the Orks to consume.
If you get an Iron Warrior to administer a mercy killing, you know you're one sick puppy.

It's a great book. Easily one of the best 40K novels. I adore the humanity and the care Ventris shows to the Unfleshed... The skinless. Also how he and Pasanius are able to turn the renegades back to honour. Then the next book is amazing with how Ventris cares for the unfleshed after saving them. In Swords of Calth we see Ventris' fall from grace and so his change to the Primaris is a bad thing.
There are a few sequels to the Dead Sky, Black Sun. On Ventris' side there's The Killing Ground that continues right after the DSBS, for Honsou there's The Iron Warrior. Then this story continues in The Chapter's Due and there's also a couple of guest stars from Horus Heresy.

@@finalgirl640 To me Ventris' "hero speeches" are exactly what he THINKS he needs to do.
First of all, he made captain while believing that another one was more deserving. He always leads from the front and until the Chapter's Due he did't even have a command squad (the new Primaris command squad is the defacto Swords of Calth). He took on too much and messed up fighting the Tyranids, as he believed that that as the captain running the defense was his duty. It was against the book.
He's always been very vary of his position and rank since he was "grandfathered" straight into the program, no need to prove his worth. His ancestor died defending Macragge in the first Tyrannic War. So others didn't really see him as someone that had to earn his position.
He's unorthodox but an Ultra through and through, humanity is important to him like it is for the Ultras or the Salamanders. That's why it's so tragic how he acts after all of this in Swords.
Anyways, he has this need to believe in the good of people and second chances. This is why he saved the Unfleshed, even if he should have killed them and... Well, then there was the tragedy in Tarsis (I think it was) after the return from the Warp.
DSBS is a great pivot in Ventris' life and where he grows into adulthood.

"Say what you will about the Iron Warriors being relentlessly evil. But at the end of the day, at least they care about recycling" Well put, Wes! 😂👏
Also, I don't know why. But the visceral part of 40k doesn't bother me that much. The things that bother me are the abhorrent cases of manipulation, betrayal, injustice and abuse of power. Like the simple case of an inquisitor who fucks up, but abuses his position to cover it up. Often in gruesome ways worse than what he initially tries to cover up! With chaos. Sure, it's bad. But also expected. With the Imperium, and specifically the Inquisition, the lines are more grey and blurry! And in true Grim Dark fashion. Morals and ethics are just cliff notes!

I haven't read this but thanks to Adeptus Ridiculous I learned about this gem from this novel.
“Uriel turned back to Obax Zakayo and raised his bolter, saying, ‘I will kill you now.’ ‘No!’ said Leonid grimly. ‘Let me do it. I owe this bastard a death.” Uriel saw the thirst for vengeance in Leonid’s eyes and nodded.
    (Skip forward a little bit)
‘Now, slave,’ hissed Obax Zakayo. ‘Ventris told you to kill me.’ Leonid raised his lasgun and shot Obax Zakayo in the gut. He smelled burned flesh and nodded to himself, satisfied that the Iron Warrior was in pain but still alive. Obex Zakayo raised his head and roared, ‘Shoot me again, I’m not dead yet!’
Leonid stepped close and spat in Obax Zakayo’s face. ‘No,’ he said calmly. ‘An oath was given!’ screamed the Iron Warrior. ‘Ventris swore he would see me dead!’ ‘Uriel gave his word, but I didn’t,’ snarled Leonid. ‘I want you to live in agony then die in pain when this place is brought down!’
Obax Zakayo wept in pain and cursed him, but Leonid ignored his pleading as he removed the grenade attached to the crushing machine that was nearest the Iron Warrior and slipped it into his uniform jacket’s breast pocket. ‘Don’t want you dying by accident, now do we?’ he said. Without another word, Leonid turned and walked away.

They literally hanged people on ropes, stabbed hooks into the skin, and pulled, while the people were still alive, so it would streach, and killed them only after taking sheet long patches of skin. That is something Dark Eldar could take notes from.
