Poor Dib. He's part in it for the ego, but he also tries to save people from Zim's antics. And while Zim never really managed to be a planet-wide threat, he does do quite a bit of damage to his classmates and neighbors. (Stealing their organs, swapping their eyes out for robotic eyes, experiments, etc). His idea of himself as an unsung hero isn't wrong, it's just out of scale. But saving your classmates from having their organs stolen would've been nothing to sniff at, had he managed to do it.
Ironically though, I'm really not rooting for Dib most of the time. He's constantly stuck in his own world, only ever cares about he wants to do then does it, he's selfish and egocentric (he legit once got captured by Zim because he called Gaz to gloat. To GLOAT! Then Gaz had to go rescue him so they could spend time AS A FAMILY with their constantly busy father on one of the rare occasions he's free, and while all that happened Dib -who was strapped to a chair- , kept pestering her to go back and fight Zim together, only to at the end have the nerve to blame HER for everything going wrong that and not finishing Zim off. Mind you, they had planned the day in advance, Gaz just wanted to spend time with her dad, Zim wasn't actually up to anything that day, it was Dib who decided to pester Zim by infiltrating his base), obnoxious in his approach and petty in his attitude
He's a good kid! He's been shown to exhibit traits like altruism, sympathy, and loyalty. He's pretty much the nicest person in his dystopian world, egocentricism aside.
Every time someone, other than Zim, makes fun of Dib, I tend to have a mighty hatred towards them. Good thing that one kid who gave Dib a wedgie was sent to the underground classroom in Tak: The Hideous New Girl. Who's heart shattered when you saw Dib cry in The Frycook? I know mine did.
And somehow, the show's only sane characters have been facing many problems. Gaz is smart with a mood; Dib's always right, but like what you said, he's eccentric; their father's a genius(a mad genius), but still cares for his children; Miss Bitters seems to be the most mature adult, although even she has standards; there's also The Host of Mysterious Mysteries of Strange Mysteries, boy how did he break; and if I can think of a few aliens, there's Sgt. Hobo 678(voiced by the late legendary R. Lee Ermey), who's not happy about Zim's horrible leadership; Almighty Tallest Red, despite being lazy, is the better leader; and probably Invader Skoodge(Poor Little Skoodge).
The kids obsession with proving himself right (which he is) has driven him to do crazier and crazier things. Granted the world of invader din is a dystopia but still
Actually, it's not the same voice actor. Jhohen Vazquez was friends with George Clooney and let him have a cameo on his show. That's actually his voice.
