As a Nigerian tourist visiting America (NYC) for a few months in 2015 I was surprised that 99% of the hostility I received were from the back Americans 😮. They were mostly unfriendly and unresponsive when I ask for help with directions, I even encountered one who mocked my African name. It was a terrible experience. On the other hand, the whites I encountered were mostly polite. This runs very contrary to what is being portrayed in the American movies and the constant claim of racism by the native black Americans. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I'm "biracial" and my mom raised me as "black" because the nurse at the time told her I was "black" if my father was. I was just always me and my mom exposed me to "black" culture my whole life but I was never afraid of my "whiteness" either. I fully embraced heavy metal, rock, as well as rap, soul, r&b, pop. Everything except country music. I was always too "black " for white people and too "white" for black people.
Also i grew up with other "bi-racial" cousins who denounce their "black" side so its false that we "ignore" our "white" side cos theyre whiter than white people.
Truth is we're alienated by both. And typically don't know what to claim cos there's always an issue claiming either one.
I was relieved to learn that I'm actually Cherokee and German on both sides so since then I claim my nationality and not my "race"

I was about to say the same thing! As someone who’s mixed with 3 different “races” I never felt I belonged to any of the three mainly because of how people in those groups treated me. But I understand how mixed folks who are more accepted by one of the races or who phenotypically look more like one of the races would identify as that. Many bi-racial folks identified as white and tried to “pass” for the same reasons Candace is saying that some only identify as black. A generalization such as this doesn’t produce veracity because everyone’s circumstances are different.
Now the only thing I identify as is a child of God and a Christian 🙌🏽

She’s not pure African..nor is her name..could SHE be ‘mixed race’ back there too? If so..why is she speaking on behalf of ‘black peoples’ and their day to day? It works both ways!
She is clearly not ‘underprivileged’ either (think about what that starting point means).
Today..more and more ‘white people’ are underprivileged too - but they will still have a 60-70% advantage applying for many ‘middle class’ jobs..even if they were homeless and drug addicted on the street 12 months back.
Once cleaned up, just being ‘white’ is still an advantage for higher paid work - likely to get a person a job more, than most clean-living, single income ‘black-identifying’, sub-culturally ‘African-Americans’.
Those are the present stats. So..whatever Ms Owens..you’re a bloody know all, with plenty of family and personal support. You are not ‘the ‘average black American’.
It’s a total myth of (undemocratic) capitalism, to assume ‘anyone can make it anywhere if they try’ when you just have to look at black vs white wider representation in society everywhere.
Don’t even start on ‘Hispanic’ or Native American people’s chances of fair chances and representation.
A system to support those who lack support, is at least a leveller.

I was just about to make a comment about this, thank you!!
My mother is white and my father is black - without those two realities, I wouldn’t be here. I could care less about how people identify me, I can’t help their ignorance. But when people are emboldened to ignorantly ask me “what are you?” I simply say I am both races - BECAUSE I AM! I don’t call myself African American either because I think that is silly. They don’t call themselves Irish American or German American or Dutch American, Finish American, British American…you get the point. But for some reason I’m supposed to be “African American” because I’m half black, that’s stupid!!! I’m American. Plain and simple. When I have to fill out race questions on my doctors forms, I say “human”. I’m over it! This racial division crap is the silliest thing ever!! People need to stop falling for it.
There are plenty of “mixed” or biracial people that feel the same way I do. I completely embrace my black heritage - on my black side, we’ve been here longer than a lot of so called white Americans that do have the privilege of calling themselves “American” . There is an obvious expectancy for people with black (or African heritage if you want to get specific) heritage to call themselves black. But it’s not always because it’s a benefit. Candace is wrong on that.
I find it interesting that people who haven’t had the experiences as a bi-racial human being think they are an expert on what all of us think. We all have different view points and ideas about how we racially self identify - and not always is it with a sinister mindset.

I knew in my head we were the same race, but our language, accent, vocabulary, clothing, attitudes, life experiences were so different it was like meeting an alien from another planet. My mom worked hard to teach me I was the same as everyone around me, skin colour be damned. I shall forever be grateful that she didn't see colour, oppression, advantage, etc. She just saw people. The one-drop rule was a legal principle of racial classification that was prominent in the 20th-century United States. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry ("one drop" of "black blood")[1][2] is considered black (Negro or colored in historical terms). It is an example of hypodescent, the automatic assignment of children of a mixed union between different socioeconomic or ethnic groups to the group with the lower status, regardless of proportion of ancestry in different groups.

Maybe even B4 then with the Crusade? One need only read history. Racism is wrong no matter which group practices it. I have grands of mixed race and they don't have a problem identifying with both their heritage b it black, white or east Indian. Yes my family is a United Nations! My family welcomes all nations I am proud to say.but I am familiar with what Candace is saying. I have eyes. Racism has truly screwed up our way of thinking and should be erased. The Creator made variety.. mankind took a decided down turn. Certain advantages wouldn't exist if not for racism Candace. Although I wouldn't call them advantages really. @@LadybeetleMaddox I suggest that you take another look at the definition of racism, because it is very clearly predicated upon racial or ethnic prejudice. Racism is just a term used to describe a form of prejudice. There is no such thing as a form of racism that is exclusive to blacks, or any other ethnic group. Racism is evil, regardless of the reasons, intent, or shade of melanin behind it. There is only one human race with different ethnicities, anyway, thus, the term "racism," is, technically, a misnomer.

What is racism exactly? The uneducated and uninformed will equate racism simply in terms of racial hatred but will ignore the more insidious nature of what it exactly is. What is racial bigotry? They are clearly not the same thing though the common denominator is hate.
Racism is about a socio-economic system of power and advantage solely based on the premise of racial superiority. Those that support said system are called racists. Hate is not a prerequisite for racism but simply an evil byproduct of it. Thus, calling Black people racist because they hate the system of racism and those that support it is simple diluting the word. Black people, on the other hand, can be equally irrational and can become racial bigots. Since Black people other than Owens do not support, defend and promote racism, calling Black racial bigots racists is just a clever way of diminishing racism and the word racist.

My mom light skin ans multi generational mixed from her but its ppl everywhere in Louisiana area with just 1 yt grandparent ir great grandparent and come out 25-50% European. Its no actual percentage and normally when both parents light skin or darker, our parents put African American box. And that's why when ppl say they half and half blk for example, i can't automatically assume It's someone a lil admixed because of slavery (10-20% European if they honestly don't know a recent ancestor), but instead I'm thinking its ppl just as mixed as a hodgetwin fir example. Even they know the recent ancestor and say they African American. Ppl saying blk howni explained as a basic social construct is common sense imo but i do wish ppl would keep Mixed on census so we can get an American only option one day.

My mom is white, dad black. I am black. The only reason “white” and “black” exist as “racial” category is because white people needed to be able to distinguish the difference between black and white “slavery” as separate institutions. White slavery was (effectually) indentured servitude. Whites slaves lived under the common definition of slavery. For example, slavery was not perpetuated to their children. By contrast, MIXED children of slaves and slave master, were originally freed upon the master’s death and inherited all or a potion of their father’s wealth. However, the one drop rule was created so non white males COULD NOT inherit wealth. Black was black, no matter the amount. So…. If we intend to change the original definition created under the law, let’s simply do away with color as race instead of creating just another divisive category…

I for one will speak up no matter what, black, white, purple, green. I have always had the courage of my convictions and unfortunately we have empowered the black community to a feeling of entitlement because of the color of their skin. So wrong in so many levels.

💯 correct!! I know growing up and all the way til what 4-6 years ago, Race was never an issue. Everyone got along with everyone, people didn’t base everything on racial issues, didn’t make everything about race which happens now even when the original topic had nothing to do with race. And Racism was called out quick my entire life growing up until like I said 4-6 yrs ago when everything became hugely political and democrats brought race into everything to specifically cause a divide in the American People(not people that are in America Illegally, but American Citizens. That work and pay taxes, give back to our society in one way or another, the ones that have been here if not their entire lives the majority of their lives, have worked for everything they have, obey laws, don’t get helped in any way by our own government, etc) and for the most part POS Biden and his POS Administration have succeeded in dividing our community. Biden, the Democratic party, the media, celebrities etc have pushed their made believe narrative of “everything that’s wrong in people’s lives are specifically due to white people, trying to make slavery an issue and an “excuse” why some people don’t have the lives they think they should have, EVEN THO SLAVERY WAS ABOLISHED IN THE USA ON DECEMBER 6, 1865!! Which was 158 Years ago, so Slavery had no impact(physically, emotionally, financially, etc) on anyone alive today. Democrats knew who they could manipulate and use like puppets to cause a divide, cause the downfall in our country, blame whites and cops for everything and to claim that blacks are being targeted for anything that happens because of their race. The crime could happen right in front of 30-40 people and best believe all 30-40 people will swear on a stack of bibles that the criminal didn’t do it damn well knowing they did, no accountability for the crimes that are committed. Not because the criminals that get arrested committed the crimes they are being arrested for but because everyone claims they didn’t do anything wrong, they were with their (whoever their fake alibi would be at the time) the entire day/night and the cops are only being arrested because they are black(no accountability for the crimes they commit it’s always the cops fault and/or white peoples fault) So trying to use Slavery and Racism as an excuse why “blacks don’t have the life they think they deserve” is just a weak, pathetic way to not take responsibility for not doing what they needed to in order to have the life they think they deserve. FIX YOUR HOMES AND FAMILIES INSTEAD OF BLAMING EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING ON YOUR FAILURE TO HAVE THE LIFE YOU THINK YOU DESERVE. CAUSE I WAS RAISED WATCHING MY DAD WORK 50,60,70 sometimes more than that many hours a week/ multiple jobs/ below minimum wage(one job he had was only $4 and hour) he rode a bike a half hour to work everyday til he was old enough to get his license, to provide for his family, himself and to buy what he/my mom/ and me and my siblings wanted and needed. I WAS RAISED TO NOT STEAL, NOT DESTROY OTHER PEOPLES PROPERTY, TELL THE TRUTH NO MATTER WHAT IT IS, TO ALWAYS TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHATEVER I DID THAT I GOT IN TROUBLE FOR AND DEAL WITH WHATEVER PUNISHMENT I RECEIVED FOR MY FUCK UP. ALSO TAUGHT WE WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN DECISIONS, ACHIEVEMENTS, FAILURES ETC AND IF WE WANTED A DIFFERENT OUTCOME THAN WE NEEDED TO WORK, STUDY ETC TO ACHIEVE THE OUTCOME WE WANTED IT TO BE.

ANW714 - As a Mother & Grandmother, & am of an older generation I can't help but feel sorry for what the parents & grands feel when they are of the rejected ethnicity.
Don't those of mixed race comprehend they can accept & enjoy the best parts & cultures of both or more of their ancestral races.
I'm white, but from three different European ethnicities. I enjoy all the histories, including the Irish Famine, knowing my ancestors likely were indentured servants. None of the three were rich & that's usually why it's hard to trace our birth records. But accepting that one fact, I take pride in knowing they were tough hard working people.
It's the same for my other two bloodlines. Regardless of not having specific records & names, I enjoy reading about their countries' history, customs, & cultures - especially the foods & clothing styles.
Candace was right saying the term something like obsessed racism. Someone who rejects part of their own body is to be pitied. That much self-hate about who they are must drive them insane. Hence obsessed racism. There can be no peace within their mind or soul. 😢

1)maybe she feels that her dad will "love her more" if she identifies with him??
2)were you always open with her regarding her heritage? Like her whole life? Sometimes when learning something new, kids want to "try it out" and see how it fits them.
3)not trying to be mean, but just your reaction to the DNA test seems like maybe she has never felt free to celebrate or talk about one side of her heritage and now that she can, she is going to...almost as a form of rebellion.
I don't know your situation and I truly wish the best for your niece, your family, and you! I am just trying to offer a bit of input from the outside looking in....from someone who told my children what they were and as much as I could about "their people" because their father wasn't around-and they decided they didn't want him around when he wanted to come back in their lives more than a decade later(one gave him one chance, he didn't show, she cut him off HARD). So they've always been confident in who/what they are, even without dad there to tell "his side"-because I didn't want confused kids or kids that only knew "my side" of themselves.

I asked him to apply for financial help as much as he could get. In the end, he only got $500 to cover books costs. So I went to talk to his financial advisor. As we sat and waited, a few black kids came and complained that their free laptops were not Apple brand. One black girl and her boyfriend had a free apartment and said they complained about their cash assistance check. I got upset and got into a Karen mode, so the financial advisor took my son and I to her office. She showed me how the establishment works. She showed me millions of dollars funding for black minorities, black African, Haitian, Somalian, etc... but for white and Asians there was barely any funding at all. White students and Asian had to fight for a handful of grants.

I was asked ignorant questions from teachers about whether or not I WAS CONFUSED 🫤 because I was “mixed???!?” My black mother raised me and I obviously developed in a way that I identified most with her . Being female also contributed to that. I also was/am aware that the mostly white world in which I must navigate, generally see me as a “coloured or black person.” Needing to accomplish “tasks,” I don’t have and didn’t have the time nor did/does it matter to me what people think. I accept that I am being treated with a level of discrimination and ignorance that I just don’t have time or inclination to address at those times. I do check the “mixed race” box. I don’t reject any part of myself as that would do me a disservice on my journey of self actualization. The world can refer to me however they wish.
