I am a Tolkien fan and Johanna Basford's books are my favorite books to paint my own little Middle Earth world. In all of the books I always find motifs that I can associate with Lord of the Rings or all of Tolkien's other works, including the Amazon series Rings of Power. Matchstick Mouse is also a coloring book series that I really like. I also do handicrafts and I crocheted some of the characters in the books, for example the worm, because I have Matchstick Mouse as a stuffed animal.
Oh wow that sounds amazing! 😍😍 I need to see some of your crocheted creations! I'd love to make my own matchstick mouse - you could even make one for each season! 😍🥰
Great choices Jess and wonderful to get a look at your fantastic completed pages in them too! We share a lot of the same must buys, although Kerby would definitely be top of my list 😂 and I’d need to add Hanna and Maria on there too ❤
I’ve coloured and done art all my life and when the adult colouring became popular in around 2014 my first book was Johanna Basfords Magical forest . I became tired of all the leaves but still admire her style . My other favourite artists are , Maria Trolle ( have all her books ) , Ida Chiaki ( her town and room colouring books are delightful) Hanna Karlzon ( her work is amazing and I have all books ) I admire Rita Berman ( have all her books ) I also love some Japanese artists but am a bit unsure of names . Your finished pictures are truly lovely ; thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you for your lovely comment 🥰 I feel as though most colourists start off with Johanna basford! I've had ida chiakis books on my wishlist for a while now! They look beautiful 😍
Hi Jess😊, I like your selection. I could not agree more on Johanna Basford. I was wondering if you would be willing to do a flip through of all your finished pages. What I could see all looked really beautiful! If you did one already I missed it. Thank you so much❤. Tamara
Hi Tamara thank you for your lovely comment 🥰 I started a series when I first made my channel going through my collection and showcasing all my completed pages - there's a playlist on my channel! I need to get back to finishing the series - my goal is to have it done by the end of the year 🥰
Thanks for sharing! Nice to hear what other people are drawn to. It’s a good point too, about how must buy and fav artists aren’t necessarily the same thing. I feel the same way!
Hi Jess! Loved seeing Your Must Buy Artists. We have a lot of the same! I Mine are Rita Berman, Melpomeni Chatzipanagiotou,Johanna Basford, Angela Porter. I also really Enjoy some of the Mythographic Books and the Tiny Worlds Books. 👍🏻💜
I really like this video because it's not a long drawn out one with the images like some do, it holds my adhd attention. I Love Matchbook Mouse because they're not complicated and I get a sense of accomplishment when I don't feel like doing more complicated pictures. I also really enjoy the RJ Hampson books, they're so much fun! My favorite artists are Hanna Karlson and Maria Trolle, their artwork is beautiful and I will always buy all of their books.
great video, my top 5 are Johanna Bashford, RJ Hampson, Matchstick Mouse, Rita Berman and Eriy. lovely to see new book flips as we sometimes miss them. xxx
Hi Jess loved this video funny enough I have the same colouring books besides Rj Hampton I have nearly all of his books besides Robots and houses thank u for sharing ❤❤❤😊😊😊xxxx
I am a new subscriber. I love your voice and accent…I could Watch and listen to you all day…lol. My top ten artists are Hanna Karlzon, Johanna Basford, Christina Karron, Camilla d’Errico, Melpomene Chatizipanagiotou, Kerby Rosanes, Denise Klette, Teresa Goodridge, Hannah Lynn and Rita Berman.
Hello, love this kind of favorite content. We have some overlap in must buy artist, Johanna Basford, Rita Berman, Melpomeni Chatzipanagiotou and RJ Hampson is also in my “honourable mentions”. My other must buys are Maria Trolle, Hanna Karlzon, Emelie Lidehall Oberg, Stratten Peterson. 3 other artists I keep my eye on are Ursula Schwab, Jen Racine and Gabi Wolf. Happy colouring!
I LOVE the works of Johanna Basford as her drawings are full of intricate designs and takes a while to color! from Judy (age 79) in Nova Scotia, Canada.
I’d say I’m a bit like you and Shelly, I mostly don’t buy the entire back catalogue or the most recent releases until I’ve seen a flip through, and try and be a bit selective when I do buy (budget constraints) but I do get excited to see new books from Lulu Mayo, Johanna Basford, Maria Trolle, Hanna Karlzon, RJ Hampson, Joseph Catimbang, Rita Berman and Melpomeni Chatzipanagiotou. I really need to colour pages in my untouched books, sometimes I realise I’m missing out through avoiding the ‘difficult’ pages.
I love Hanna Karlzon and she would definitely feature in my list of favourite artists! 💞 I don't consider her a mustbuy as although I love her art, some of the themes of her books don't appeal to me as much so I wait to see flip throughs before deciding whether to buy hers or not 🥰
I agree so so much! I ADORE the artwork, what a disappointment though, in the quality of the paper. Unfortunately that will keep me from buying any more!
love your collection :) i have some of the books you showed :) still haven't gotten my hands on a morgan o'brien or maria trolle book. Regarding morgan o'brien...can you tell me what kind of animal année day is ? Can't figure it out...
I’m fairly new to coloring but I am curious to see if I’m the only one who isn’t drawn to Johanna Basford books? I admire them and I love seeing people’s completed pages, but they are not my cup of tea. I prefer books with more cute animals or people, or books that tell a story
You're definitely not the only one! Everyone has their own specific taste of colouring books and what one person loves another may not! There are definitely several popular artists in the colouring book community that I can appreciate and admire but just don't appeal to me personally and my colouring style and that's okay! 💞
I started coloring with Bennett klein Colour my sketchbooks. Those are amazing only the paper is really thin. Which is a major disadvantage but the pages are absolutely worth it! There are not many colorists that seem to know this artist. I think he is actually one of the first artists for adult coloringbooks, tatoo artist publishing his art as coloring pages. As he was even before Johanna basford. Dont even know if he still sells the books or that it is only pdf. If youve never heard him, you might check him out
My must buys are Millie Marrotta and Kerby Rosanes and increasinly the mythographic series. I do like lulu mayo as well, but mostly for the kawaii tarot book. I want to like Rita Berman more but I wish the books were a little bit bigger. I got her World under the magnifying glass pair but will maybe give her journey through x ones a try. You've definitely tempted me with the Circle of Life book, its very pretty!
Some great choices there! That's interesting about Rita Berman because one of the things I love about her books is the smaller size! 💞 Circle of life is such a beautiful book 😍😍
I struggle with color palettes also. Have you seen Sarah Renae Clark's color catalog? It's a game changer. (No affiliation, just a fan and owner of both the digital and box set.)
These color palettes are good.. but it would have been even better had she just made the images of useful things.. like specific plants, flowers, fruits, vegetables, animals... things you actually color in a book. Picking colors from a photo can be done simply in any online editor that has an eyedrop tool... but knowing the 5 prismacolor pencils to use to make a good carrot... that is WAY more useful!
#1 My all time favourite is Kerby Rosanes, because his pictures are different from most other books and the images are simply stunning. #2 Johanna Basford, because the first colouring book I have ever bought was Secret Garden, she started it all and I love her artwork. #3 Hanna Karlzon: Her images are so lovely and the books are so beautifully made. #4 Same goes for the books by Maria Trolle. Beautiful books, great paper and lovely images. #5 Rita Bermann: I love the quirky drawing style and the fact that the images are smaller, so that you can finish a page in a reasonable time and don‘t have to work on a big double spread for weeks. I also like Leyla Duly, Lizzie Marie Cullen, Melpomeni (can’t spell out the surname) ,and Good wives and warriors, and I have yet to try out Millie Marotta, but I am interested. I am not into Debra Muller or Lulu Mayo, but I was really interested in the R.J. Hampson books, particularly in Lost and Found. It‘s just that I read in some reviews that the paper is really bad, so I have stayed away from them so far.
That's a great list of artists there! And I loved hearing your reasonings for each 🥰 I personally don't mind Amazon paper as I tend to use alcohol markers as a base and shade over the top with pencils - it's definitely harder to work with though if you like to layer pencils
Alcohol markers will always bleed through to the opposite side of the page unfortunately 😭 I only ever use them in single sided books for that reason! To prevent them bleeding onto the next page behind it I put a sheet of scrap paper behind the page I'm colouring 🥰
Thank you! That is a great idea indeed! I just found your account, will spend my evenings watching your vids. Thank you for uploading! @@colouringbumblebee
So many artists. So little time lol. My top five would be 1. Johanna Basford 2.Hanna Karlzon. 3. Maria Trolle 4.Rita Berman. 5.Millie Marotta but more based on what I have and can get. I love Eiry but not available in NZ and I am getting curious about Morgan O Brien.
I almost always base with alcohol markers and then shade over the top with pencils 🥰 I like to use a different pencil set for each book so I've used prismas, black widows and arteza experts 🥰🥰
It depends on which markers you're looking for! For alcohol markers that bleed through the page but have a smoother finish and can blend easier I'll always recommend the ohuhu honolulus! For water based markers that don't tend to bleed through and are cheaper than alcohol markers I love Crayola super tips! They are amazing quality for the price!!!
I dont want to be rude, but i really dont get why these books are so popular...to me they are fiddly and dont really expand your knowledge of art work or skills. I bought one recently, which is of two women artists from the Victorian era. It's their botanical drawings. I quite like it and its been useful as ive had a very stressful month and couldn't concentrate on an actual painting. Its very plain really, not a lot of tiny parts. However I'll be back to my own drawings very soon. So if someone would like to explain, I'd be grateful.
I can't speak for everyone but for me colouring always me to express my creativity by exploring colour and I find the whole colouring process very mentally therapeutic! I'm not someone who can draw so this allows me to be creative 🥰
Some people love finely detailed pursuits and some people dislike them. For me, the more intricate something is, the more I am fascinated with it and enjoy it! So my hobbies include hand embroidery, hand painting tiny dolls and making their outfits, heirloom sewing, drawing, coloring and painting. I’m also a professional violinist which ties into my interest in creative, complicated things that need a lot of work to make any progress. Coloring books can definitely expand your artistic skills in many ways! Such as creating attractive color palettes, shading and mastering different media such as pencils, watercolours, inking and others. If a picture doesn’t have an interesting background I will often sketch it in myself so there are lots of ways to make each page your unique artistic product
I draw, illustrate, paint and... color depending on the moment. Coloring may seem easy but you have to look for a color palette, harmonize... that is not easy, there you also learn a lot about color theory and application. but ...before all that I think we seek to enjoy, relax, eliminate stress. Sometimes I color consciously looking for a result and learning and other times I simply color and relax. Sometimes it's just about enjoying
