I still haven't gotten far with the base game and this looks like a whole new game in itself, can i start a zoo with the aquarium animals only? Then build a regular zoo on a separate island with the base game animals and mechanics later on? (Sorry for the bad english😅)

Your English is fine! Yes, you can start on a new island and it doesn't affect your old game which will still be there. All 3 of my Zoo's are at various stages and on different islands. Hope that helps!
