Bummer about the barking dogs- would ask what kind of beeper that is (so I can use it on our hikes) but it’d probably bother Echo as well as any other dogs that might run up on us). I love the Hyperlite Unbound 40. It feels real good on my back. I have only seen two people on the whole trail. It is a very solitary trail for sure. Did you get to watch the A Game? What did you think? I watched a few highlights. Both quarterbacks look really good.

Hey Karen. Yeah, that turtle wasn’t bothering anybody. He was just doing what I was doing…putting 1 foot in front of the other. The bark suppressor does not hurt the dogs. It just gets their attention when they start barking. Too many hikers feed them to get them to stop barking. But that only encourages their aggressive behavior.😁👍❤️
Awesome stuff! Got a gear list for this hike? I picked up some of the Columbia Silver Ridge shirts based on seeing your vids / list from the PCT hike. I like how they are long sleeve but can be pulled up and buttoned into short sleeves - dual purpose!
Great videography as always you really capture the beauty of the trail. I think either pronunciation of Appalachian is correct. I have heard it both ways growing up near the foothills and spending time in the Appalachian mountains.
Very peaceful and the absence of a lot of other hikers like the AT is notable. I'm curious how many other thru hikers you will come across and whether you end up with a Pinhoti Tramily.

Lovely vid Rev, you have some amazingly beautiful trails over there. I've only ever heard it pronounced Apple-Ay-Shuns but yeah you don't want to be walking around woodland when it's very windy as old branches could fall on you and trees are more likely to topple if there's been rain because as the soil is soft and the roots don't anchor the tree so well.

@@TheHikingRev you’re not kidding. I started a three day hike Friday from the terminus to mount laguna but unfortunately we’re having a huge heat wave. I’m not in shape and I did the whole 20 miles to lake morena and was doing ok until I went up Hauser canyon in the heat of the day. I went downhill (not literally) very fast and got in trouble. I ended up getting heat exhaustion and dehydration. I felt horrible so camped at lake morena Friday night and paid a trail angel to take me up to my car in mount laguna early yesterday and drove home. I was exceptionally fatigued and out of sorts yesterday and slept a ton. This morning I’m much better but not close to %100. The heat and the amount of exertion to go up that hill ended up being very dangerous. It was very hot all day and I had already done 15 miles totally exposed with no shade before the hill so it was the total 20 miles of exposure that got me

There are some phone apps that may work as well. I used to use a "tone generator" app when the neighbors dogs barked too much (all day long). They got used to it though and ignored it.

“Blue blazes”…. Charles Dickens made similar reference to “blazes,” in his book, “Great Expectations,” back a bit before your birthday, in 1861. “Blue”, was added to give the term a little more heat. Rev, I live in Atlanta and planning to hike the Pinhoti a weekend at a time, getting off the trail in the evening to stay in a cabin or bed and breakfast. I've heard there are many wet crossings or creek fords on the Pinhoti. Did you walk through in your trail shoes or did you change every time to water shoes of some type?
Ok. What is buddies beep beep. Did it ultimately work to keep the dogs away? I will be going to a trail in Spain where hikers have been attacked by Ferrell dogs. If this works well. I may need to check it out. I googled it and found nothing. Any info?

According to Donnie Laws, it's pronounced with the a's having the same sound, all sounding like the a in apple. His UA-cam channel is devoted to Appalachia and he's lived there all his life so I guess he could be considered an expert 🤷🏼♀️. Are you going to hike the extended Pinhoti, taking the Benton McKaye Trail to the southern terminus of the AT? It's nice seeing a new trail. Not too much out there about the Pinhoti Trail. Maybe the Ouachita Trail is next? Hope the warmer weather, no-see-ums and mosquitoes don't make it too miserable. Happy trekking! 🥾

I have used trail runners for years. I did the entire PCT in Altra lone Peak trail runners. I am wearing the version six now. They usually last about 500 miles.😁👍❤️
You do not need a permit to hike the Pinhoti Trail. You can go into the town of Sylacauga and get a registered tag but it’s not necessary. Also, if you go into the town of Heflin and let them know that you are hiking the Pinhoti, they will send you a certificate when you complete the trail.

Hey buddy! They just opened the Flagg Mountain Tower a few months ago. It sure is more cooler and shaded than on the exposed PCT. 😂

Rev, I live in Atlanta and planning to hike the Pinhoti a weekend at a time, getting off the trail in the evening to stay in a cabin or bed and breakfast. I've heard there are many wet crossings or creek fords on the Pinhoti. Did you walk through in your trail shoes or did you change every time to water shoes of some type?
I just walked through the streams/creeks in my trail runners. Except if it was at the end of a hiking day, I usually tried to keep them dry. 😁
Ok. What is buddies beep beep. Did it ultimately work to keep the dogs away? I will be going to a trail in Spain where hikers have been attacked by Ferrell dogs. If this works well. I may need to check it out. I googled it and found nothing. Any info?

According to Donnie Laws, it's pronounced with the a's having the same sound, all sounding like the a in apple. His UA-cam channel is devoted to Appalachia and he's lived there all his life so I guess he could be considered an expert 🤷🏼♀️. Are you going to hike the extended Pinhoti, taking the Benton McKaye Trail to the southern terminus of the AT? It's nice seeing a new trail. Not too much out there about the Pinhoti Trail. Maybe the Ouachita Trail is next? Hope the warmer weather, no-see-ums and mosquitoes don't make it too miserable. Happy trekking! 🥾

Looks like you’re not wearing hiking boots. What are you wearing and how do they hold up over a long hike?
I have used trail runners for years. I did the entire PCT in Altra lone Peak trail runners. I am wearing the version six now. They usually last about 500 miles.😁👍❤️

I'm not sure if you mention it, but do you need a permit to hike the trail?
You do not need a permit to hike the Pinhoti Trail. You can go into the town of Sylacauga and get a registered tag but it’s not necessary. Also, if you go into the town of Heflin and let them know that you are hiking the Pinhoti, they will send you a certificate when you complete the trail.
I contacted Appalachian conservancy and they said where in the blue blazes stands for hell. 😂

I've heard both pronunciations. Around here (SE Pennsylvania, we say a long A after the L).
I am a native of West Virginia, the only state that is entirely in the Appalachians. Short "A" in the pronunciation.
