    Glad you’re back out on trail. You’re inspiring and I, for one, love when you share the spiritual things. The Lord spoke earth into existence and when I’m hiking I see HIS fingerprint everywhere. And being from the south (WV)….yes it is south!!!! We say App-uh-LATCH-un 😉🥾🥾✝️🙏🏼

    Fun to see you back on the trail!! It looks like the trail is well marked (Blue Blaze 🟦 is indeed hard to say). Bummer about the barking dogs- would ask what kind of beeper that is (so I can use it on our hikes) but it’d probably bother Echo as well as any other dogs that might run up on us). Glad your hike is going well. Great filming!

      Hey Karen. Yeah, that turtle wasn’t bothering anybody. He was just doing what I was doing…putting 1 foot in front of the other.
      The bark suppressor does not hurt the dogs. It just gets their attention when they start barking. Too many hikers feed them to get them to stop barking. But that only encourages their aggressive behavior.😁👍❤️

    Lovely vid Rev, you have some amazingly beautiful trails over there. I've only ever heard it pronounced Apple-Ay-Shuns but yeah you don't want to be walking around woodland when it's very windy as old branches could fall on you and trees are more likely to topple if there's been rain because as the soil is soft and the roots don't anchor the tree so well.

      @@TheHikingRev you’re not kidding. I started a three day hike Friday from the terminus to mount laguna but unfortunately we’re having a huge heat wave. I’m not in shape and I did the whole 20 miles to lake morena and was doing ok until I went up Hauser canyon in the heat of the day. I went downhill (not literally) very fast and got in trouble. I ended up getting heat exhaustion and dehydration. I felt horrible so camped at lake morena Friday night and paid a trail angel to take me up to my car in mount laguna early yesterday and drove home. I was exceptionally fatigued and out of sorts yesterday and slept a ton. This morning I’m much better but not close to %100. The heat and the amount of exertion to go up that hill ended up being very dangerous. It was very hot all day and I had already done 15 miles totally exposed with no shade before the hill so it was the total 20 miles of exposure that got me

Charles Dickens made similar reference to “blazes,” in his book, “Great Expectations,” back a bit before your birthday, in 1861. “Blue”, was added to give the term a little more heat. According to Donnie Laws, it's pronounced with the a's having the same sound, all sounding like the a in apple. His UA-cam channel is devoted to Appalachia and he's lived there all his life so I guess he could be considered an expert 🤷🏼‍♀️. Are you going to hike the extended Pinhoti, taking the Benton McKaye Trail to the southern terminus of the AT? It's nice seeing a new trail. Not too much out there about the Pinhoti Trail. Maybe the Ouachita Trail is next? Hope the warmer weather, no-see-ums and mosquitoes don't make it too miserable. Happy trekking! 🥾

      Thank you Cat for the pronunciation lesson. The Pinhoti trail is a hidden gem. A great practice hike for the AT. I’d love to do the Ouachita trail one day.😁👍❤️

    Looks like you’re not wearing hiking boots. What are you wearing and how do they hold up over a long hike?

      I have used trail runners for years. I did the entire PCT in Altra lone Peak trail runners. I am wearing the version six now. They usually last about 500 miles.😁👍❤️

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  Рік тому

      You do not need a permit to hike the Pinhoti Trail. You can go into the town of Sylacauga and get a registered tag but it’s not necessary. Also, if you go into the town of Heflin and let them know that you are hiking the Pinhoti, they will send you a certificate when you complete the trail.
