Here is a combo I had. Getting toward the end of the hiking day, and I had a goal that I needed to reach. I had the downhill so I stepped off the (narrow) trail, to let the uphill guys keep their momentum. But they stopped. In the middle of the trail so I could not pass unless I pushed them out of the way. So one man began to talk to me about an older hiker that needed someone to look out for him. I told him that I would. He droned on and I found an opening (both in the trail and in the conversation). I bid them happy trails and headed down the trail. After I got more than 30 yards downhill, trying to make up the time, and the guy yelled at me. "HEY! Lookout for that old hiker."
Later I saw who was much older than we were. I greeted him and he was fine. He was relaxed and hiking his own hike. He looked in better shape than either me or the guy who yelled at me.
I think the first guy just liked messing with me. There are people like that. Narcissists, I think they call it.
Rev, we'd get on fine on trail.

The worst types are the ones that leave toilet paper all over the trail, give you the wrong directions on purpose, the ones that destroy or misplace trail signs, or the ones who camp in the middle of the trail. Attended parochial schools from elementary to high school and one of the prevailing tenets regardless of who it came from, being a priest while was an altar boy to a parish catechist was: "If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all". I fail to see how someone not replying to me is rude. I defer to Paul in Romans 12:15-16. Walk a mile in their shoes. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. I'm no expert, but it sounds like those verses are about supporting others through emotions and perhaps not necessarily about what our friend is talking about here. It sounds like he was excited to have connection with a fellow human and was disappointed they couldn't respond kindly :)

@@peterteeter To be alone by oneself is a choice which deserves as much respect as any other possible scenario. Steeped in introspective thought, even when on the move, can most assuredly trump any acknowledgement a passerby on the trail might be....... expecting. I see a disconnect between what one construes as rude and expectation. I think our society is all about judgment, which in and of itself is rude and disrespectful particularly when not privy to any mitigating circumstances. Perhaps a hiker is on a section hike lamenting the loss of a loved one, or griefstricken for any number of plausible reasons. It happens to the nicest, kindest of people among us. We are tested on a daily basis and life is difficult sometimes, which renders us detached, or perhaps aloof? - Okay... but rude? I can be of another opinion while remaining respectful.

I do a lot of canyon hikes and above tree-line hikes. It is best practice to poop in a wag-bag and pack it out. There is NOTHING that irks me more than to see a trail lined with little blue and green bags of human poop tucked into rocks and cracks. In my opinion, that is worse than just pooping on the trail as it is never going to go away until someone packs out the poop bag.
At the camp site - having to listen to someone's phone constantly alert them about the arrival of every email, message, and facebook post is maddening. It's like trying to sleep in a Chucky Cheese or video arcade. beep, beep, ding, thwap, chaching,...... And on top of that, is when they have the sound turned on for every letter they press when responding to all those messages.
Well, Rev - I think my blood pressure is rising after thinking about all this.😁 I need to go take a hike to chill out. 🥾

I agree with all of these, except for the mandatory greeting. There are many reasons I may not greet on the trail. 1) The trail is so busy with hundreds passing, so my voice gets sore. As an introvert, it's actually exhausting to greet so many times hour after hour.
    2) I go hiking to get away from people, and to mindfully observe nature. I prefer to listen to the birds and the wind, than human chatter.
    3) Especially while ascending, I'm working on rhythmic nasal breathing. Using my voice isn't always possible if I'm out of breath. If I'm exhausted, I'm trying to conserve as much energy as possible. As an introvert, too much social interaction really does exhaust me. 🙏

There is one no no that you and many, many others speak of that I do, but hear me out. I will, if solo backpacking in a remote area, no one around, listen to an audiobook or podcast without headphones. This gives me peace of mind and I feel the noise, not loud, helps alert wildlife that I am around. There have been a couple of occasions where I surprisingly met folks on trail and would quickly pause, and once got a very rude comment even after I profusely apologized, but I am not going to quit doing that in remote areas where it makes me feel safer in case I may disturb a random hiker for a second before I turn it off.

    This is great!!😃👍🏼.
After the pandemic started and during the pandemic, my standards for trail behavior lowered dramatically!! I don’t mind mountain bikers or horseback folk or ATV people (4 wheelers and snow machines) as long as they don’t leave a plastic bag on the side of the trail that takes 3000 years to break down, full of fresh hot dog s&@$!!!

My grandpa said, "good morning how are you today?" He was met with absolute silence! When we were out of ear shot he said to me, "East Coast". Lol This was back in the early 1990's when people were really starting to move in!! Lol NOT that east coast people are always rude. I never forgot that! Lol

Many assumptions made about expecting a greeting or acknowledgement in return. Some may not notice because they are absorbed in what they are doing and didn't notice you. Some may be trying to get away from people and may consider it rude that you interrupt their peace and quiet. Some may not be able to even hear your greeting for one reason or another, whether it be from headphones or a physical impairment. When I go out I go out to be alone and don't care that you're impression of me is rude if I happen to not return your greeting or salutation.

I disagree with the uphill rule. Downhill you have momentum and uphill you probably need to stop and catch your breath. I always let downhill hikers pass me. One exception is on a steep trail with loose rocks that might be dislodged and strike the uphill hiker. The rudest hikers (on the AT) are those who set up a tent in the middle of the shelter on a rainy day and take up all the space.

Dear sir, Not everyone feels compelled to participate in small talk. Some people are operating in a world of their own and won’t so much as look at their fellow man. Don’t whine bc they don’t wave. (See yellowledbetter by Pearl Jam)
Overjoyed, loud, drunks and those who habitually lie and steal are the rudest of all.
It’s kind of silly and rude of you to expect everyone on trail to meet your presumptuous greeting standards. A person who smiles to your face as he robs you blind or assassinates your character behind your back is as dangerous as the devil himself.
I don’t smile much, never have, without being stimulated by intoxicants, but I’m happy for you if you are a genuinely happy human being.
(Metaphorically) Pat your parents on the back for raising you right and keeping you safe then pat yourself on the back.
Okay, we’re good to go Rev!
    Be well,
-a person with no tolerance for bs.

Hmmm. I am five minutes into the video. I stopped. I read maybe 10 comments.
The rude are usually rued And they don't realize either.
Then there are those who mount their soapbox and espouse rudimentary suggestions coupled with their judgment of others.
If I'm hiking, do I have to be verbal when I greet someone? Can I wave?
If someone's hiking slower than me and I want to pass them and they don't notice, do I seethe? Or do I say the same thing when I am walking anywhere and someone is in my path, " excuse me please". If they apologize as people are want to do in the supermarket aisles, I point Out they don't need to apologize for walking, then thank them, and keep moving.
Dog poop. I say to everyone with a dog,, "What a nice dog that is with you. I like seeing dogs on the trail. I just don't believe some people when they don't clean their feces out of the path." If they are defensive, tell them you weren't Saying that they did not clean up after the dog with them. This one's a tad passive aggressive but it does get the word out to many dog people. Eventually it will reach the inconsiderate ones. The poop in the video doesn't look like dog poop though.
Loud music. " hey that's Barry Manilow isn't it? My mom likes to crank him up too. My dad doesn't like it. Especially when he is outside. ".
Belching/farting. Sometimes they just can't be stifled. As a contest is usually done by males under the age Of 20. Many Kids are really stupid. I did not participate in body noise contests, except for the hand under the opposite armpit. I did a host of other things that were really stupid.
Say something to them if you like! Why not? You expect others to speak to you. Cuts both ways

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  Місяць тому

Thanks for your comments. The reason most people watch UA-cam videos is to get a different perspective on the way to do things. It’s like eating at a cafeteria. Nobody forced you to go in. If you don’t like the food that’s in front of you just move on. Don’t spit in it. Don’t criticize it. Don’t disagree with it. Just move on. Perhaps you may find out that you really do like cream spinach. But you’ll never know until you try it.
I hate you only watched five minutes. The best was yet to come. By the way, I did not say to verbally respond. I just said you need to respond. (I’ll get off my soapbox now.) 😁

    • @milkywayan2232
      @milkywayan2232 Місяць тому

I watched the rest later. It was consistent with the first five minutes, And your response now.
I look on life as a trail. Everything everyone is doing, every moment of the day is part of the trail leading to the next plane of existence.
Every word, billboard, T-shirt, bumper sticker, UA-cam video is just like a person saying it to you. Hence If something is unclear I ask. If something smells like dung on The trail, I point it out, oft times Removing it.
Now I have never seen the data that tells me what "most people" are doing on UA-cam. I do know on my trail I do my best to help others. When I see some loud talking, dung slinging, Holier than thou, problem Complainer with no solutions offered. I point that out. We are never too old to learn. There was a time I was too stubborn and too full of myself to learn. But we are all born knowing That the solution is treating others kindly. It certainly is not mocking their Socially inept behavior without trying to help them
