  • In this video I finish most of the build, start testing it and find mistakes!
PCBWay kindly sponsored the PCB www.pcbway.com/ great quality PCBs from just $5!
This is part two of a series. I simply filmed to many details to make it into one video.
    Part 1: • BUILDING a Commodore 1...
The motherboard I used is a COREi64 1581 Enhanced V2 board I got from PCBWay.

Thanks again for the 1581 PCB ++, Tommy, and for introducing this project to me!
It was great fun building it and at the same time as you did.

Great video Tommy! I ended up buying one of the Thomas' 3D printed cases for my 1581 build and the quality was superb!

Great pair of videos so far. I'm looking forward to part 3.
Thanks for making the mistakes for me! 😀 I've been accumulating parts to do this build myself.

Man... nothing like a board that's not clearly labeled. It looks like you have a little way to go. (I'm glad that no chips were damaged in the making of this video... 😄 )
That thin plastic that gets in the vents and on the support material is called "flash", strangely enough. It usually cleans up easily enough with careful use of a razor knife or X-acto blade. (I'm an old military modeler. Built many a tank, airplane and ship model when I was younger.)

Thanks! Yes, no problem with the plastics :)

One reason I like to use a Plus/4 or C128 as a test bed for these drives is that the ?DS$ command lets you check the error channel without all that tedious OPEN15,8,15:INPUT#15.... stuff (which is potentially destructive since you have to have it in a program). That and F3 (or DIRECTORY) gives you a non-destructive directory listing. Gives you a much better perspective of what's happening on the drive (in my opinion anyhow!) Good luck with part 3.

@@Arcticretro I finally came around to watch this. A really great project, useful for lots of people to be discovered. Instead of switching for a different computer you could also use your Kung Fu Flash or Easyflash 3 Cartridge to start up any of the famous carts that have a DOS wedge. I often use the Final Cartridge and then have diectory and error channel on the function keys. So handy.

I have just built the 1581 replica Enhanced using a Samsung SF-Drive for the Amiga and it just works fine ! I use the 6502A CPU and power everything with a 1541-II PSU. I left the "alternate power input" alone and did not mess around with the components at all. I even burnt a switchable "Dual ROM", JiffyDos works fine :) Disk format, disk change, no issues at all. Just good luck ? Unfortunately, the Gotek firmware does (to this place in time) not support the C64 Disk images at all. ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Amiga, AtariST and a lot more - but no C64 support at all . 😫 Things that bothered me most were clearly the floppy cable connectors. They are the "wrong" way round on the board so you have to twist the ribbon cable to hook the drive up correctly. same with the power input - it sits just on the opposite side of where it sits on my drive ! So you need a looong cable to connect everything up... annoying, really...

Thanks for the story. My drive seems to work fine now.

Always nice to teoubleshoot the Trouble you have Made yourself😒. I would check the build with an Amiga ,odeed gotek sonce I can rule out the Drive Not working correctly. As far as I Unterstand IT, the alternative Power Input only produces 5V, so youncan only use Drives which do Not need the 12V for the Drive Motor...
