    Another great video! I appreciate your work. Obviously lava has been moving under the existing lava pushing everything up. I think you're right to be concerned. What would happen if lava begins to flow like it did just a few weeks ago.

    The spillover is merely a tiny tentacle from the rest of the lava flowing to the sea. It is being fed by lava tubes underneath that flow towards the ocean.

    Oddity of that original 2022 eruption point on the
    lower side of that hill as seen beginning at 16:00 minutes
    and never addressed by the way. It dried up and major eruption
    occurred in the valley as seen producing the strong
    lava flows here. This is fantastic video of the 2022
    event. Can’t recall seeing anything better on it. Thanks Roman!

    • @Tugela60
      @Tugela60 Місяць тому

      What was odd about it? It was just part of the original venting line of the eruption. Being at a higher elevation than the rest of the vents is irrelevant, lava is not water.

    A smart person would use the fire dept or any other means like water trucks to cool the over running lava to create a new wall that's higher to divert it. Then do the same on any other runs to divert anything to the sea without town damage.

    Wonder if they were to put water on minor breaches like this if it would be enough to redirect it? Use the slowly rising lava to reinforce or build the wall. Maybe for L12 and L13 install a line from the ocean, with pumps, to keep that edge wet.

    That tiny overtopping is not a threat, the volume is too small and the lava is too viscous to go far. The bigger concern will be if there is another eruption.

    • @IcelandExplorer
      @IcelandExplorer  Місяць тому

      What about if volcano intensidies 100 times...can happen anytime now.

    • @Tugela60
      @Tugela60 Місяць тому

      @IcelandExplorer It won't. There will just be an opening of another fault line. This has happened a few times in Hawaii. The Icelandic geologists seem to think this is a unique situation, but that is because they only think in terms of Iceland and forget about the extensive record of what has happened in similar scenarios in Hawaii in the past.
      Like I said, the concern would be the impending eruption, not what the current lava is doing.

  • @gw8278
    @gw8278 Місяць тому

    Maybe a silly question but what would happen of sea water was dumped from the air, could that possibly cool and solidify a area to create cold lava wall. effectively changing lava flow direction?

  • @artistjoh
    @artistjoh Місяць тому +3

    It is starting to look like Grindavik may be running out of luck.With an increasingly full magma chamber, if another large fissure opens, as has been the case up until now, it will not take long for the walls to be breached. The higher the walls get, it becomes more difficult to raise them as the volume required to raise just a meter more grows exponentially. It is also possible that molten lava against the base of the wall might melt the wall base leading to a collapse. It might be wise to start a new inner wall in case of a breach, but if these eruptions continue for months more, there will come a time when the town and harbor will succumb to lava flows.
    Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

      The thing it was starting really big 200 m3 per sec with 4 k erupting fissure and expanding chaotically...So it was simply dangerous at the beginning but for the past weeks the level of danger isnt different than back in 2021 or 2023. Though the likelihood of powerful eruption anyday day now does poses a threat to being there for now
