    Jimmy “here’s a montage of all of Arraez’s throws”
    Me: Well he’s not going to show ALL of his throws😅
    *2 minutes straight of Arraez throwing the ball 40 feet*
    😐😐😐

    Vinny P was just commenting on 1Bs getting shafted by WAR, thank you Jimmy for drawing attention to the fact that this really is an aspect of the game that should be given some more consideration. Sometimes the perception of infielders can be totally changed by how often they are supported by their 1B. Needs to be factored in a little more to how many Outs are added by scoops, but also how many extra bases are limited by blocking bad throws and knowing when to come off the bag. There’s an art to this that is being ignored to screw guys who aren’t OPSing >.850

      All you need to know about 1B and WAR is that Keith Hernandez (arguably the best defensive first baseman of all time) barely cleared 1 career dWAR. Considering that (barring big strike out games) 1B has the majority of put-outs every game, it seems like dWAR is skewed too much against them.

      I played 1B in when I was in HS (because I'm left-handed and too slow to be an outfielder) and scooping is so fucking difficult! You have so little time to react. And these guys are catching throws way harder than I ever faced

      The -12.5drs war penalty assigned to 1B has always seemed dramatically harsh. If anyone ever thinks first baseman can’t add value defensively I encourage them to watch the video of Ji-Man Choi full splits highlights from the playoffs!

      @tennispromf Yeah also catch/stretch radius how many bang bang plays that are decided within a few inches over the course of a season. Factoring in the point of catching vs leavue avg.

    also love this video. I watched a lot of Mets game last year and Pete looked solid to me so I was surprised to hear everyone say he's below average defensively

      Yeah seriously Pete made some great plays last year. Mets defense wouldn’t have been as good as it was without him. You had Lindor and Vientos throwing gas at him and most of them on the ground and he was able to have what I thought was his best defensive season. If he hadn’t been awful at the plate most of the year I could see him getting a big bag. Really hope he can just come to his senses and sign back with the Mets on a prove it deal

      @@DasFlippityFlop I dont think it matters what some guy on YT can or cant do. Thats absurd. Pete is the free agent and he below average defensively. All the data shows this. Watching every Mets game shows this.

    People don’t understand how good of a first baseman Pete is sometimes. I get the first baseman market is bad, but a good first baseman is really important to winning. Guy on first can make a huge difference in a game. Lindor is great as well but it takes two.

    First base gets too much hate. Idk maybe it’s cause I played the position in highschool but it isn’t easy and has a lot of nuances. Scooping the ball is really challenging at least it was for me lmao

    • @samael4550
      @samael4550 6 днів тому +1

      Don’t forget about how important a good stretch is as well. A good first baseman is the difference between an out and an infield single on bang-bang plays.

    • @DasFlippityFlop
      @DasFlippityFlop 6 днів тому +2

      That’s what I’ve been saying lately. Just the attitude around Pete’s contact. You need a good first baseman to win a series. Freddie Freeman was so important to the dodgers victory. Matt Olson was very important when the Braves won. Maybe Yankees could’ve won if they had a real first baseman.

  • @caseyfenscke5895

    Vladdy on the slow throws he has to scoop he stabs at the ball and it bounces out of the glove. He needs more feel and have more of a smooth control towards the ball. His stab works on the hard throw because it’s coming in hard.

    One thing to note on the Rockies high bounce passes, they've said on broadcasts that I've watched that players at Coors Field will intentionally bounce throws to first because the sun is often in the first basemen's eyes at Coors. Interesting how there can be outside factors like that

    I was ranting about this exact topic to my buddy and on some YT comment the other week. People always view 1st baseman in the OAA lens when that isn't the entire story of how a player plays that specific position. Yeah OAA is a great stat, but it doesn't represent solidifying the outs when other position players makes the throws to them. I was trying to explain that there needs to be a scoop stat that could be broken down to ez scoops and difficult scoops with the % of success in converting the out. I'm probably missing a half a chromosome, so my explanation of this stat was real wordy and confusing.
    Thanks for the awesome work you do, Jimmy.

    Love the analysis. Some thoughts on the source data:
    The difficulty rating of some of these scoops seems arbitrary, especially after seeing Vlady’s.
    Also, the stats don’t seem to differentiate if it would have been an out of not. Some of the missed scoops would not have resulted in an out which seems like a moot point.

      I think it makes sense to includes those ones just to improve sample size. They still either made the scoop or they didn’t, I’d still want to see those ones if I was a GM signing a first baseman.

  • @racg174
    @racg174 4 дні тому

    i think this mostly proves how the first base player doesnt have much control of their outcomes and its mostly Shortstop > 3B and 2B in that order which effect their putouts at first

    Cool story here. based on this I'd be interested in if using the bounce pass helps reduced extra bases on balls past the 1st baseman. Is that a follow-up that could be done to see if using the bounce pass ( effectively ) helps save runs through preventing errors? I imagine there are players who use the bounce pass and still throw balls past 1b as well as players who don't and sail the ball around or above the base. What players make a lot of throwing errors by % plays using bounce vs just wide or over?

    Of the 4 impossible ones at the end, maybe the Olson one and the last one are rated impossible because the throws are into the runner? Jus a thought.
