Roambuilt Side Steps Install | 4x4 Sprinter Van Build

- The Roambuilt side steps are a great addition to our van exterior and were a quick weekend install. For those wondering, we opt for the "Ladder Compatible" set which stops 16" short of rear wheel arch.
We are super happy with the quality of the side steps and are looking forward to more off-roading adventures.
If you have any questions on the install, please don't hesitate to comment below or reach out. We would love to help in anyway we can! :)
PS: Stay tuned for more exterior upgrades coming soon!!

Good teamwork. They look pretty solid.
Sweet! Nice install
SOOO Sick!!! Good job!
very nice, thanks for sharing. If my (soon-to-be here) van didn't already come with side steps, i would do the same thing
great video & installation!
Thanks, we enjoy yours as well!
nice side step. But in Euro special Belgium you will not get an inspection on something where you have to drill into the chassis that is unsafe. however there are plenty of holes in the chassis that can be used.
Yah, we were not too happy about having to drill in the "no drill zone" of the van. But so far the side steps have held up great and were a GREAT addition to our van!
Good video. Also like your wheels, are they 16 in. What size tires..thanks
Nope they’re 17”, BFG KO2 LT265/70 R17’s to be exact
Unfortunately the 2019+ models don’t have enough clearance for larger than 16” stock, we had to install Agile Off-road’s aftermarket fenders in order to fit these. Super easy install, check out our other video for more details ua-cam.com/video/7aWPdvDQy_Y/v-deo.html
Let’s talk about these rails in a year or two after installation. Those rivnuts on the edge of the sprinter metal are sure to fail with time.
Agreed, we were hoping for better mounting points and alignment; even the steps themselves were slightly curved and didn’t fit well. Overall a minor bummer, but with the loctite on the rivnuts we’re optimistic they’ll hold up for the life of the van
@@vanagonia5196 I have install these steps on a 2019 Sprinter 170 and it was a total challenge to the point that we decided to fabricate and weld plates to the attachments so that the steps could be securely fasten to the van. Fabricated additional supports (braces) just because two braces are not going to hold those rails with time. We felt Roambuilt is taking advantage of consumers with a poorly rails design with regards to the attachment part; lack or non existing customer support for $1600 plus shipping is unacceptable. The van sold but we could not take the chance (liability) with these steps so we spent an additional $400 plus dollars (labor) to make sure these steps were securely install on the Sprinter Van. Oh ...by the way... I am not alone on my complain. Is all over the Sprinter Forum. All I can say is good luck and make sure you’re looking underneath your van to make sure everything is there (bolts)
What did you apply to the outside of the rivnut at 2:27 in the video?
Hey Richard, its Loctite Go2 Gel. We found that rivnuts sometimes slipped/spun if you didn’t tighten them just right (not too much, not too little). The extra bit of adhesive helps hold them in place as well as gives it a bit more of a waterproofing/seal around the exposed metals (even though we sprayed them with some paint too).
Roambuilt sent me the wrong length (needed the ladder compatible) side step, still waiting for their response what to do with it.
We had a similar startle as well; ordered the ladder compatible but the 144” sidestep showed up instead… or so we thought. Turns out the ladder compatible is ~2 feet short of the rear tire which is what makes it compatible with the ladder.
Best case for you, you get two driver side steps for the price of one! Good luck with the install!
