Top theories:
1. The seal was already full, and was mostly just toying with the penguin.
2. The seal was less comfortable on land, and the penguin's threats to peck it got it irrationally spooked. I mean, its eyes were right there within reach.
3. The seal spared the penguin on a genuine merciful whim. It's possible! Animal brains are strange.
4. The seal was tired, and didn't want to keep chasing the penguin if the penguin was going to keep escaping it.
5. They somehow communicated at the end, and the seal decided to spare it. Honestly, its crazy how the seal got closer each time and the penguin didn’t even try to move away.

Rush down predators hate prey that stand on it's ground because it can be dangerous to them to engage, so they prefer the ones that run, since the penguim wasn't running i think the leopard seal though it wasn't worth the risk

I fully expected this video to make me sad. Instead, it was inspiring at first and then really confusing.
Leopard seals are probably the most (and if not _the_ most, then certainly in the top 10!) aggro seals/pinnipeds. But even they are still seals, and share two psychological traits in common with their gentler cousins: curiosity and a love of play. All large-brained creatures love to play; it's mental exercise, and the smarter the critter, the more creative their playtime gets. Had this seal been hungry or even just feeling a little peckish, that birb would have been toast. Instead, as traumatizing for the penguin as it was, the seal decided to just play with it, and hone his/her own skills and have a bit of fun.
It's a lot like how cats will play with small animals; sometimes they'll kill them, and sometimes they won't.

My god as a bird lover and having worked in this field for the past 30yrs. With "hands on" experience dealing with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey. I was REALLY routing for this little guy too escape. And thank god he did.

Technology, gone are the days where they have to have a camera crew operating a single camera trying to chase down some action. Now they just scout with aerial and underwater drones and find interesting things. Animals are always hunting so it’s not that rare to find with a lot of wild life.

Seals hunt for sport all the time. They commonly kill prey without eating much of it, if at all.
Even here, the seal was bored and playing, as seen when it was touching the penguin as it was chasing it.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I remember reading an article saying that leopard seals will toy with penguins even when they're full. Sometimes the seal will kill the penguin even if it doesn't eat it, but I'd guess most of the time its not worth the energy to do so.

@Jakjak I think it's a combo of some CGI and real footage. Occasionally they mix in green screen real animal footage composites or some CGI to help tell the story. We as humans engage more when theres a story rather than just earing animal facts. The sound is always fake due to it being impossible to put a mic on an animal without disturbing it. There's a few documentaries out there on how the footage is captured, it can often take months for 50 seconds of footage in really harsh conditions.
